Bienvenue à Paris! We wish you a warm welcome.
The City of Paris, the Paris Convention Bureau, Viparis and the Paris tourism industry are very proud
to host the ESC Congress for the first time. It is an opportunity for us to show how the destination can
combine a fruitful scientific programme with the magic of Paris on such a large scale.
Paris has a long experience of hosting international congresses. Among its many attractions, our city
can boast of an unequalled geographical location in the centre of Europe, an efficient public transport
network, state-of-the-art congress facilities, and one of the largest accommodation capacities in the
world.
Each year, more than 27 million visitors come to enjoy Paris’s unique culture and history and its

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Five suburban lines, “RER” A, B, C, D and E, serve Paris and the surrounding region. These trains link
up with the Paris Metro network, made up of 16 lines, each identifiable by their number, their colour
and their start/end destinations.
FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE CITY CENTRE
There are many ways of getting to and from Paris:
> RER B (suburban train linking to the metro)
Rate: €8.90 one way ticket.
From 5.45am to 1pm: every 8 minutes.
Main stations: Gare du Nord, Châtelet-Les Halles, Saint-Michel, Denfert-Rochereau.
> Taxi
Average fares: between €38 and €50 depending on the hour, the destination and the traffic.
> Roissybus
1-way-ticket to Paris – Will drop you at Opéra, €9.10.
(6am - 11pm, every 15 to 30 minutes).
> Air France Shuttle
1-way-ticket to Paris – Will drop you at Étoile or Porte Maillot, €15 (5.45am - 11pm, every 30 minutes).
1-way-ticket to Paris – Will drop you at Gare Montparnasse or Gare de Lyon, €16.50 (7am - 9.30pm,
every 30 minutes).
You can buy your ticket on the coach.
To find the RER B, Roissybus, Air France Shuttle or a taxi, follow the signs in the airport.
GETTING TO THE CONGRESS VENUE
> By car
From Paris, take the A1 motorway or the A3 motorway in the direction of Lille, then join the A104 motorway in the direction of Soissons and take the exit at “Parc des Expositions Visiteurs”. Car parks for
visitors are at your disposal.
> By public transport from Paris
Take the RER B in the direction of Paris-Charles de Gaulle and get off at the station “Parc des Expositions”.
> From Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport
Take the RER B in the direction of Paris and get off at the station “Parc des Expositions” (first stop
after Paris-Charles de Gaulle).
> By taxi
The Paris Nord Villepinte exhibition centre has a taxi terminus that gives you direct access to the
congress venue via one of the two main entrances: access via the reception gallery and via the
esplanade.

THE PARIS CONVENTION BUREAU (PCB): YOUR KEY PARTNER
Set up in 1971 as a joint initiative by the Paris City Council and the Paris Chamber of Commerce and
Industry as a non-profit association, the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau has three missions:
to welcome and inform visitors and tourism professionals, and to promote the assets of the capital
in France and abroad with regard to business and leisure tourism.
• It welcomes visitors at its six offices, located in the capital’s busiest locations.
• The portal website parisinfo.com is the key reference for tourist information about Paris.

corporate sector.
• It brings together professional and institutional partners to organize joint actions
to enhance the image of Paris as the global tourism capital.
• It organizes press visits for journalists as part of initiatives to promote Paris and its image.

institutions and committees.
At the head of the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau, Paul Roll created the Paris Convention
Bureau in 2004 and assigned a team of 7 people to associations and the corporate sector.

Led by Christine de Gouvion Saint-Cyr, Secretary General, the PCB is the destination’s gateway and
advises and supports associations and the corporate sector. The intense economic activity of Paris –
Île-de-France benefits from the destination’s extensive capacities for hosting meetings and events.
Paris has a vast and varied range of different types of venues to cater for all kinds of events (congresses, evening events, meetings, etc.) and suit the budgets of all categories of participants (researchers,
companies, students, etc.). What sets Paris apart from its rivals is its abundant and eclectic range of
hotel accommodation. It benefits from the know-how of the major hotel chains, from one-star hotels
to the most prestigious establishments. Venues range from specialist sites to more unusual places
(museums, parks, etc.), and there are always new ones to choose from.

THE CONGRESS TEAM
OUR MISSION
We help in the early stages of the preparation of bids for hosting congresses, recommending service
providers, organizing site visits, and lobbying, which may include presenting Paris to the association’s
international committee. In the later stages, we remain available to help promote the congress and
supply the organizers with tourist documentation about the capital. This is an ongoing process that
can last for between two and ten years, which is why we maintain close links with the associations and
professionals involved in each bid. To bring the ESC Congress to Paris we have been working for more
than four years and Paris succeeded in winning the bid after having clearly shown its ability to host
such a large congress.

OUR MISSION
Our role is to advise the organizers of corporate events: companies or the agencies acting on their
behalf.
To this end, the corporate events team responds to requests for assistance, examines requests
and recommends the Parisian service providers that best respond to the organizers’ criteria.
Lastly, we offer event organizers a range of tools to help them in their decision-making and provide
them with all the necessary information on the destination. To fulfil all these missions, we draw on the
resources of our network of members which is constantly developing, always on the lookout for new
products and services. We encourage our members to become involved in joint projects, bring them
together for discussions and exchanges, and keep them up to date with changes in the profession or in
markets thanks to our ongoing business intelligence activities.

Among the 2,200 members of the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau (PCB), more than 450 professional members, representative of all the activities in the meetings industry, joined the exclusive

THE RATP
A unique urban network!
Although the RATP may operate classic buses from the past for timeless trips through Paris ... more
generally, it is concerned with transporting 10 million people per day in safety, punctually and in good
quality conditions that it is constantly seeking to improve.
For the ESC Congress 2011, the RATP is active on the transport committee and from 27 to 31 August
2011 plans to: increase the frequency of metros and RERs; programme with the SNCF transilien at
least 50% of RERs directly serving Paris Nord Villepinte Parc des Expositions; enhance welcome and
security measures in order to make travel as smooth as possible for congress attendees …
Getting around inner Paris couldn’t be easier; all the venues and sights
are easily accessible thanks to the 14 metro lines serving 350 regularly
renovated stations, 5 RER (regional express) lines and 4,500 buses operating on 321 routes and 31 Noctilien (night bus) services, not forgetting
the 3 environmentally-friendly and quiet tram services. There are also
plans for a public transport bypass in 2020 to improve access between the
peripheral areas.

MCI
MCI France has been appointed by the ESC as its official hotel reservation agent for the
ESC Congress 2011 and to manage its official events.
MCI France has organized more than 4,000 events in twenty years, including conferences,
exhibitions, incentives, hospitality programmes, product launches, and press conferences
all over the world. As a PCO, MCI France provides the whole range of services from scientific programme support (secretariat) to operational planning (registrations, housing, production),
from social events to financial management and communications and marketing consultancy.
MCI France through its subsidiary company also proposes its services as Coordinating Ground Agent
for the various needs (transportation, special events, assistance, tours) of companies attending
the congress.

AN EXCEPTIONAL RANGE OF HOTEL ACCOMMODATION
It would be difficult to rival the diversity and competitiveness of Paris’s range of hotel accommodation. Paris – Île-de-France accounts for 140,000 rooms of which 75,000 are situated in the city of
Paris. At the end of 2009, the PCB brought together 15 major hotel groups representing 450 hotels and
60,000 rooms to sign a charter for the hosting of major professional events thus committing to offer
specific and advantageous conditions for this type of event.
For the ESC Congress, over 15,000 rooms have already been allotted by ESC and its agent MCI.
RESTAURANTS
The global capital of gastronomy, Paris has more than 12,000 cafes and restaurants, ranging from the
traditional brasserie to the most exotic cuisine. Many restaurants also have meeting rooms, so business and pleasure (gastronomic pleasure) can be combined. On the menu: Michelin star restaurants
with top-class chefs, the new “fooding” stars who mix flavours from around the world with traditional
cuisine, and small local restaurants offering innovative menus.
Among its members, the PCB has 84 restaurants available for private hire that can welcome all types
of events, that are situated in different parts of the capital, that offer typically French, classic, bistro or
innovative cuisine, in magnificent or unusual venues, and which will be delighted to cook for the ESC
Congress 2011 attendees.

With 14,000 flights a week, Paris’ air transport hub is the largest in mainland
Europe, serving more than 625 cities in 132 countries. In 2008, 87 million passengers arrived at one of Paris’ two international airports, Roissy – Charlesde-Gaulle (CDG) and Orly. In order to maintain its global competitive position
and improve its response to the demands of the market, the airport operator
Aéroports de Paris (ADP) is developing its infrastructures, continuously expanding the airports’ capacity and improving access. In 2008, for example, Aéroports de Paris opened the new terminal 2E, which
will be the terminus of the future Charles-de-Gaulle Express linking Roissy with the Gare de l’Est in a
20-minute service due to be in operation by 2013. We will do everything that we can to ensure that the
ESC Congress returns to take advantage of these new infrastructures from 2014.
ADP is a member of the PCB and plays a large part in the welcome arrangements put in place
and presented by Viparis for the ESC Congress 2011.
PRIVATE TRANSFERS
Around ten PCB member companies offer chauffeur driven, up-market cars,
limousines, saloons, minibuses and coaches with à la carte services. Multilingual drivers, qualified to give guided tours of Paris, transfers, available for a
