He realised that plastics, a new material at that time, is the future for manifold production facilities. Vacuum forming machines have been produced since 1955, after initially engaging in prototyping and tool manufacturing. Based on forward-looking ideas, his company enjoyed a steady growth over many decades. Essential ideas that influenced the progress of vacuum forming technology were invented and developed by him. Developments achieved under his direction: - the first vacuum forming machine with ergonomical loading height - the first bottom heater of a vacuum forming machine - the first stepless control of heating elements - the first electronic machine control and - the first clamping frame adjustable in both axes. A motorised plug assist system ensures uniform drawing and precise reproduction of part quality. This option is available in 4 variations which are: - pneumatic (max. 70 kN) - motorised (max. 200 kN) - motorised boost (max. 320 kN) - locked hydraulically (max. 2 MN). Motorised drive Machines with motorised table drive This equipment allows extremely precise movement of the table. Freely programmable speeds, forces and positions can be selected and stored. Machines with motorised plug assist drive The precision of a CNC axis is also achieved here. Therefore, speeds, change over points and forces are programmable and can be stored. Programmable axes All setting positions of a vacuum forming machine can thus be automated. The programmed value is stored together with the program onto a data carrier. After reloading of this program all values of all these programmable axes are automatically executed by the control one after the other. Any material thickness can be handled. All suction units can be selected and stored via program. Special control and design features prevent blanks from sticking. Roll feeder All machine types can be equipped to process roll material. The combination sheet loader – roll feeder is also possible. 11 www. -ttt.com Fast tool clamping system The fast clamping system performs 4 important functions of the tool change: taking off new tool from fork-lift truck, aligning on machine table, clamping in machine, lifting of mould off machine table to hand over to fork-lift truck. This enables one man to do the tool change in the shortest time possible. On request, we can also fit retractable ball rollers. Tool change over wagons are also available. In this case, every tool needs to be equipped with a closed bottom plate. Window plate system This option, invented by GEISS, patented and already successful installed in over 500 machines, replaces the fixed window plate! The window plate system includes 4 separate plates positioned against each other like in an iris diaphragm. Our invention allows the stepless adjustment of both axes independently from one another! Except for our smallest sizes, the strokes are always the same. That machine axis which is directed from left to right (generally the longer axis) allows a reduction by 1000 mm and the short axis over the width of the machine, by 500 mm! This means that our customers no longer need to have concerns about investment, organisation and storage of many different aperture plates. The operator is relieved of the necessity to change plates when changing size. A correctly heated window plate, even of the right size, is always available in the machine! 12 Thermoforming Options for Vacuum forming machines Radiation pyrometer The precise measurement of the material temperature is used at 3 points for control: - in top heater for controlling heating time - in bottom heater for additional information - in machine frame for controlling cooling time Radiation pyrometer in machine frame for controlling cooling time Plastitherm temperature control Fully integrated unit. Measuring of tool temperature with Pt-100 sensor and 3-point controller. Clean room equipment Class A shaped parts are increasingly required to have clean room quality. To that effect the results are very positive. The measurements show that a clean room enclosure, along with a very careful preparation, can reduce the number of particles suspended in the air within the cabin by 99.75 %! This is based on an additional set-up on a standard machine. Alternatively the clean room equipment is available in stainless steel. 13 www. -ttt.com Heating systems with quartz elements All machine types and heater banks are available with quartz elements or optional with “FLASH” type elements. Hundreds of thousands of these elements are in use. Their fast response helped the single-station vacuum forming machine achieve a high share of the market. In idle position at lowest setting, they are among the best energy saving heating elements in vacuum forming machines. Heating systems with halogen elements The “FLASH” heater element system can often cut heating times in half. The productivity of the single-station vacuum forming machine is equal to productivity of multi-station machines – without their drawbacks. The power of each element is individually controlled (our standard!) and allows perfect adaptation to the most demanding applications! The low absorption at a wave length of 1 micrometer allows deep penetration of the radiation and perfect heating through of even very thick materials. Our halogen elements type “FLASH” are unrestricted applicable for all thermoforming materials! The new element considerably reduces the influence of colour and at the same time increases the efficiency of the heating. The power consumption as well as the heating times for typical applications are remarkably reduced! Multi-color printed sheets of various thermoplastics are no longer a problem. 15 www. -ttt.com CNC trimming machines Since their development in 1984, it was our aim to offer a range of CNC trimming machines, which would hold a leading market position in respect of technology, quality and productivity. The advantages of continuous path control, rigid portal design and high flexibility put our trimming machines very soon on the road to success. These machines are also designed in accordance with our parametric concept and are available in any nominal size and countless variations to achieve the optimum for the user. Over 450 machines supplied prove their productivity under harsh industrial conditions. Sinumerik 840D control The widely varying demands that we and our customers make on an NC control can nowadays only be met by the Sinumerik 840D. The integrated PC can meet all requirements with features such as modern data interfaces, easy operation with top performance, extensive 5-axes processing package, comprehensive programming facilities and safety feature “Safety Integrated”. The following options are available in our machines: Any offset, rotation, scaling and mirroring of the FRAME co-ordinate system, round tool-centerpoint TRAORI (RTCP), automatic motion control with Look Ahead function, COMPCURV and COMPCAD data compression, CONTPREC programmable contour precision, Circle in space through three points CIP, 3-D cutter length compensation and CUT3DC 3-D cutter radius compensation. Trimming machine FZ 2000 x 1000 As with all other CNC trimming machines of GEISS the nominal size is equal to the area size trimmed with 5-axes. Values quoted may vary depending on optional equipment. 17 www. -ttt.com CNC trimming machine FZ Direct Drive Trimming centre with 5 directly driven axes For fast 5-axes trimming from foams for model manufacturing up to aluminium, all axes of this plant are equipped with gearless direct drives. Linear motors can boost the speed in the 3 longitudinal axes to up to 180 m/min. The two rotary axes B and C use gearless drives, so-called torque motors, which depending on version can achieve an angular speed of up to 900 angular degrees. The acceleration of these axes is much higher than that of conventional axes with gear drives. The machines for trimming of plastic and aluminium come into a new class! With CNC trimming center FZ Direct Drive the rotating axes are no longer the limitation at quick simultaneous movements and on horizontal surrounding of radii. 18 Trimming CNC trimming machine ECO series Trimming machine for light-duty applications The current range of CNC trimming machines has been extended at the end of 2003 with the machine type "ECO". This new development is designed for light-duty applications and is also priced very attractively. The axes achieve feed speeds up to 75 m/min. The PC based control Sinumerik 840DI by Siemens provides the same 5-axes functions of its "big brothers"; yet: The price is economical – without saving on quality and service! In addition to plastics these trimming machines can also process wooden materials and aluminium. During the first year after introduction of this machine type we succeeded to sell 25 machines worldwide. Yet another proof that this new development places us again "one step ahead". GEISS trimming spindles GEISS milling spindle fitted in a very compact gimbal milling head. GEISS trimming spindles have 2 protruding shaft ends. The direction of rotation of these spindles can be inverted in seconds via program. The spindles are therefore especially suitable for the trimming of mouldings. GEISS spindles are available in 2 sizes. We have built up a very fast and unbureaucratic exchange and repair service for GEISS trimming spindles, which we produce ourselves in every part in highest precision and which are subject to most rigorous quality control. Refurbished spindles and new spindles are permanently available. The refurbished spindles are offered to our customers at an extremely attractive price. All spindles carry a guarantee for operational life. CLASSIC trimming spindles The CLASSIC trimming spindles have a tool clamping device that permits automatic tool change. The particular feature of the CLASSIC trimming spindles is the interchangeable shaft unit. In the event of damage to the bearing, it is not necessary to remove and repair the complete spindle, but only the shaft unit. These linear direct drives accelerate the machine from 15 m/s2 up to a speed of 180 m/min which permits an increase in production of 40 to 100 %. In addition, this drive distinguishes itself through extreme rigidity and contour precision, as the machines are equipped with direct measuring systems and elimination of mechanical force transmission elements such as gears and belts. As there are hardly any mechanical components that might wear, these machines have a considerably longer life span. Free from noise and swarf, this unit can cut materials that cannot be processed with a trimming spindle easily or not at all. This unit can also be fitted with a cold knife or heated knives. An excellent add-on feature for trimming machines! This combination is used particularly for trimming of interior automotive panels. Tool change facility An automatic tool changer is available for machines with tool change trimming spindles, which is arranged at the inner wall of the machine along the X-axis. 25 www. -ttt.com Noise reduction and dust protection Due to their compact portal design, the machines can equiped in a simple way with a canopy. This machine enclosure allows the connection of extraction equipment for air re-circulation. Extraction systems We offer suitable extraction systems, swarf conveyors and filter systems including all conduits ready assembled for the removal of swarf and dust. When a swarf removal system is fitted, a strut frame replaces the solid machine table so that the swarf can fall through. Values quoted may vary depending on optional equipment. 26 Trimming Options for CNC trimming machines Equipment with shuttle table, sliding table and rotary table The shuttle table is recommended for the loading and unloading of big parts. It is designed as an additional CNC axis. Protection is provided by light barriers or a safety laser scanner. The table moves alternately out of the machine at the left-hand and the right-hand side. When the shuttle table is positioned it shuts the machine case like a drawer or the machine case is shut by vertically running roller blinds. Sliding tables move out of the machine to the front to facilitate the change of workpieces. Machines with centre screens can be fitted with 2 such tables. For large formed parts, the sliding tables can also be coupled. The rotary table is designed as NC-axis. Workpieces can be changed while the machine is working. Loading and unloading is at the same position so that the machines can easily be integrated into production lines. Owing to these advantages, machines with rotary tables are frequently used in the automotive industry, for example for the processing of dashboards. The danger area of the rotary table is protected by a light barrier at the front and a safety laser scanner that prevents trespassing the light barrier. 27 www. -ttt.com Measuring sensor and measuring cycles In addition to the measuring sensor on the sledge of the Z-axis for measuring and recording the work piece co-ordinates, a fixed sensor is available for automatic measuring of the machine axes and trimming tools as well as a laser system for tool setting and breakage monitoring. Measuring cycles automatically perform error compensation, tool compensation and zero offsets are calculated and activated. Weakening of slush skins To ensure the function of invisible airbags in motor vehicles, the slush skins of dashboards and door panels must be cut down to a very precise residual wall thickness.
