History, heritage and traditions
In the footsteps of Roman Emperor Augustus...
A
round 15 B.C., Roman emperor Augustus decided to create
a Roman town on the lands of the Aedui, friends of the
Romans for over a century. The town, located approximately
30 km east of Mont Beuvray in a strategic communications
crossroads, was to be Rome's little sister. Dominating the alluvial
plain of the Arroux river, the "new town" of Augustodunum was
designed as a monumental setting. From the start, it was one of
Gaul's great towns, offering all the advantages of a Roman
town: theatre, amphitheatre, forum, etc.
Autun still retains the marks of that glorious era and is one of the
towns with the most Gallo-Roman monuments still standing in
France: The so-called Temple of Janus, the Porte d'Arroux, Porte
de Saint-André, the Theatre, ramparts and towers, the Couhard
Théâtre romain
Rue de la Maladière - AUTUN
Built around 70 AD and located east of the ancient city,
it was used for dramatic performances. With 148m in
diameter, it seems to be the largest in the Roman world,
and can accommodate 20,000 spectators. An imposing
wall closes the theatre behind the scene, from an
unproven height of 30 m.

Du XIe siècle, clocher du XIIe. C’est un édifice roman à 3
nefs terminées par des chapelles. L’intérieur conserve
une magnifique fresque représentant un Christ en
majesté (1120). Classée aux Monuments Historiques en
1897 grâce à J.G. Bulliot, l’église est bien conservée.

History goes on...
utun remained an important town throughout the Middle
Ages. The diocese was created as early as the 4th century
around a cathedral centre. Only a few elements of the
cathedral centre have survived to this day: the Saint-Aubin chapel,
etc.
In 1120 the construction of a pilgrimage church began, under the
influence of the bishop Etienne de Bagé. The church was placed
under the protection of Saint Lazare, whose relics it possessed. The
current Saint Lazare Cathedral holds a masterpiece of
Romanesque art: the set sculptures (capitals, the "Last Judgement"
tympanum) attributed to the workshop of Gislebertus, whose
name is engraved on the tympanum, under Christ's feet.
In the 15th century, in the Burgundy of the Valois family, Autun
became a leading city for artistic creation. The patronage of the
dukes of Burgundy lead to private patronage. In Autun, it was
represented by the Rolin family. Nicolas, the father, was chancellor
to Philip the Good. He didn't forget his home town and endowed
it with major works of art. Flemish artists such as the image-maker
Klaus de Werve and the painter Van Eyck have left their mark.
Jean, the son, was cardinal of Saint Lazare Cathedral. He offered
the cathedral a jube and a new spire made without timber, a rare
example of the skill of stone craftsmen in the Middle Ages.

Contemporary History is written every day...
n the 17th century, Autun gained a college. The Jesuits built it
and added a chapel that is now the church of Notre-Dame.
The building is still dedicated to education: it became the
Lycée Bonaparte, in honour of Joseph Bonaparte who studied
there. Napoleon only spent a few weeks in Autun but returned
several times, staying in the Hotel Saint-Louis with Josephine.

In the same century Gabriel de Roquette had a seminary built,
a beautiful building with a glazed-tile roof. Nowadays, it houses
the Lycée Militaire (Military High School), a school that has been
the origin of outstanding careers: Virgine Guyot, the first woman
pilot in the Patrouille de France, is a fine example.

Rich industrial heritage
ocated to the east of Autun, the former mining town of
Epinac was the centre of great industrial development in the
middle of the 18th century thanks to its mines. It was marked
by buildings for its many shafts, in particular the powerhouse for
the Hottinger shafts. Today the city's theme-based tours - "Circuit
des Gueules Noires", "Circuit de la Garenne" - offer an
introduction to the rich heritage of this industrial past.
On the other side, to the west, some say that this is the centre of
the world, others that the world is all around them! Either way,
the village of Anost, at the heart of the Morvan Regional Natural
Park, will introduce you to Morvan's traditions and folklore. Here,
the Maison des Galvachers ecomuseum presents the life of
Morvan's inhabitants in the19th century when, because of
poverty, the men had to leave their families to go and find an
extra source of income, especially carting and hauling timber.

Founded in 1974 by a Tibetan lama. It offers visitors a
group of Himalayan style monuments and buildings in a
pleasant park, decorated with colourful banners. Built
on three levels with gigantic Buddha statues, many

AND sURRoUNDINGs!
n addition to being a major centre of Christianity with the
Cathedral of Saint-Lazare, Autun and its region are home to
other beliefs. Long steeped in Roman, Celtic and Christian
influences and blessed with landscapes that encourage
meditation and contemplation, Autunois Morvan is a region that
welcomes spirituality.
La Boulaye is the setting for a Buddhist temple whose
Himalayan-style architecture and daily rituals make it a veritable
centre of Buddhist belief.
Nearby at Uchon there is an Orthodox monastery, perched on
top of a granite outcrop, which is filled with a series of Byzantinestyle icons and frescoes.
Mesvrin valley contains the remains of the former Mesvres Priory,
letting you discover the layout of a monastic complex that was
attached to Cluny Abbey since the end of the 10th century.
Near Epinac, in the centre of Les Battées forest, lies the Val SaintBenoît monastery. Built in the 13th century, it was occupied for two
hundred years before being abandoned. Since 1982 it has
been the home of the Sisters of Bethlehem and the site of their
pottery workshop.

Dominated by a high stone spire of the fifteenth century, it remains one of
the major Clunisian works of art, built between 1120 and 1130. The Tympanum
of the “Last Judgment", biblical scenes on capitals, the famous "Temptation
of Eve" (exhibited at the Rolin museum), were carved by Gislebertus.
This gate opens to the East; at the end of the Decumanus (The road
crosses the city from the East to the West). Its architecture is close to that
of the Porte d'Arroux, but has undergone numerous restorations and in
particular to the Viollet-le-Duc.

Only ruin that is still intact, located in a cultural area on the outside of the
town. It's a Fanum (a temple of Gallic origin); the God that was honoured
in this temple is unknown. The name Janus comes from the deformation
of the name of the area "La Genetoye", the place where brooms grew.

Located at the top of a Gallo-Roman necropolis, the Pierre de Couhard,
built in the 1st century AD, is a funerary monument.
Only remaining element of the medieval fortress of Riveau. It was built on Gallo-Roman
foundations and integrated into the rampart. This site became the property of the
Ursuline nuns in 1647, expelled during the Revolution. In the 19th century, the Visitandines
put up the statue of the Virgin. The tower is now owned by a Japanese artist.

This gate dates back to the early 1st century AD; it opened to the north at
the end of the Cardo Maximus (the road crosses from North to South). It
has two large archways, one for vehicles and two small ones for
pedestrians.

When Augustodunum (Autun) was founded in the 1st century BC, the city has
an impressive rampart (6 km) with 4 gates, two of which remain today. The
part that is best preserved is situated on boulevard Mac-Mahon.

Church. ating back to the 13th century, they represent Jehan de Roussillon
and his wife Isabeau. It's been classified as a Historical Monument since
1903.
Constructed in 1236 by Gauthier de Sully in fulfillment of a promise to the
Virgin Mary, the priory was blessed with two centuries of monastic fervor
before being abandoned. In 1982, the restoration of the church and the
chapel of the Loges was completed.

Chapel of the 11th century. In the interior different decors have been
preserved and listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments and the wall
murals were designed and produced using the Byzantine technique "a
fresco" by the monk Dom Angelico Surchamps in 1966-1967.

This 4.80m-tall granite megalith, weighing about 18 tonnes, is decorated
on one side by carvings showing a polished axe blade and a small
stylised person. It was erected by people living in Broye during the
Neolithic era. Classified as a Historical Monuments.
Dating from before the 9th century, it was built to house the remains of the Holy
Bishop, Saint Emilien. The Romanesque façade and choirs are from the
original building, while the Gothic chapels are later additions. Three bells still
remain of its original five; they are in the inventory of Historical Monuments.

Famous for its bell-tower, covered in lava slabs, this recently restored small
church is listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments. Inside there is a
beautiful 14th century wooden Virgin and Child (keys available at the
town hall).
Included in the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments, this
superb, highly original building was at one time the cemetery chapel.

magnificent fresco representing Christ in his all majesty (1120). Classified

This "little cathedral", dating from the 13th century, weaves together

At the foot of the Pierre de Couhard, the association "Par Nature" has,
since 2012, worked on the implementation and development of a
1600m² educational garden. The Rosarium is a garden devoted to
Roman and ancient roses.
This 5500m² garden implements perm culture techniques, using mulch
and ecological techniques. This well thought out garden consists of
aromatic and medicinal plants, red berries, ancient vegetables, edible
flowers, ancient fruit and wild plants.

The orchard is a place of "memory" and the conservation of biological
and genetic diversity of old fruit varieties. It ensures the lasting quality of
local varieties and the know how associated with this.

This park is a 6000m² garden comprising of a thousand rosebushes and
400 perennial plants offered by the villagers and French communes.
The top of the mountain of Certenue peaks at 611m above the sea level. Nearby, a
terrace reveals a miraculous fountain and a chapel dedicated to the Virgin, which are
remains of a cult of fertility. The pilgrimage took place at Pentecost. You can find a
viewpoint indicator and a stunning view on the Mount Jeu and the Mount Beuvray.

strongholds in the region. The gothic chapel and the residential pavilion

Built on a Gallo-Roman camp, it is a model of military construction: a high

hile walking down the Rue aux Cordiers in Autun, past the "Pause Café" store, your taste buds will be stimulated by the
smell of various coffees from all over the world. The not-to-be-missed speciality is the Talleyrand blend. Many cake shops
in the town offer "Noisettes du Morvan": grilled hazelnuts covered in almond paste and then baked in the oven. Other
specialities can be found such as "Croquets du Morvan", which are biscuits based on hazelnuts.
In the Morvan, you must taste the famous ham, corned subtly suitable similarly served with vegetables cooked, shredded simply
by an aperitif, or with rosette country omelet with bacon and cheese white farmer for « Quatr’heures morvandelles ».
