Out-Of-Market Marketing
and Advertising
Out-of-Market is not only ‘Out of the Box,’ it raises
the bar for your competitors by increasing your advertising and branding impact in multiples of 5, 10, even 20
times -- and that’s a conservative estimate.
Out-of-Market Advertising
Tourist areas can benefit tremendously from out-ofmarket advertising. Here’s an example. Do you often
hear a hotel, golf course or local vacation rental companies advertise in a local market? Of course not. Visitors
make hotel reservations and tee times before they arrive.
These types of businesses advertise in “out-of-market”
arenas.
The new Carolina Beach Music Encyclopedia is for
We’ve followed this strategy since we first established
a Beachhead with WRDX-FM out of Salisbury broad-
those who’ve been looking for the charts for 2007 to 2011,
and for those who never got the *big,* 1,000 page, two-
casting live from the Beach in the late 80s. It boosted
S.O.S. membership 400-500%, extended S.O.S. from 4
volume encyclopedia, but who enjoy looking at the Top
40 Beach songs of each year, reading about some of the
to 10 days, and had an astounding effect on the overall
economics of the Beach twice a year. That’s effective
unusual events of the year below the charts, and perhaps
pencilling in your OWN favorites missing from those
out-of-market marketing.
The Endless Summer Network has an established 25
charts.
For DJS, this is the perfect accessory on the air or in
radio station group in the Carolinas for out-of-market
advertising. Now you might ask is advertising in
the club....all the charts for each year, back to back. It’s
only 100 pages, thin, you can slip it in the side pocket of
Burlington or Greenville or Charleston or Gaffney of value
to me? (If that’s a burning question for you, call the
your computer bag.
It’s priced at $9.95.

Loafers’ Vinyl Party: May 19, 2012
Back in the day, a “Pre-Vinyl” Party -- It was tough then. There
weren’t any records. DJs had to bring their own instruments to play Beach
Music (you know it was Beach Music, there’s two girls dancing together
because there weren’t enough guys).
The Loafers Vinyl Party is from
7 pm to 2 am May 19th following
the Loafers S.P.A. Shag Contest held
during the day at North Hills Mall.
You get double the fun on May
19th - a Shag contest during the day
and a vinyl party at night!
Spectators are in free at the
S.P.A. Shag contest. The dancing
runs from 2 - 6 pm with Amateur,
Novice and Pro divisions represented. Money and plaques will be
provided for all the winners. The
competition will be in the Commons
area in North Hills Mall.
DJ's: Butch Metcalf, Randy Sting, Steve Baker and Jackie Pusser
playing nothing but 45s, albums, and 78s -- no CDs.

Mark Roberts Band
Mark Roberts was born into a musical family in
Georgetown, SC . He was inspired musically by both
his mother and father and grew up with a strong passion
for Rock & Roll, Blues, and Motown music, making
him the singer and songwriter he is today. Renowned
musicians Mark Farner, Joe Cocker, Stevie Wonder,
Jimmy Hall, Michael McDonald, Bobby Kimball, Daryl
Hall, James Taylor, Elton John and Steve Perry influenced
Mark’s desire for focus, range, and style.
Mark has been lead vocalist in several bands including
Spanky's Gang, Matrix, Alter Ego, The Next, and Heart
and Soul. Mark joined Wilmington, NC band, Heart
and Soul, in 1991, which
was subsequently winner
of The Carolina Beach
Music Award for Best New
Artist in 2000.
Mark was nominated
for Male Vocalist in 2003
just before his break from
Heart and Soul. He found
Mark Roberts
a window of opportunity
with
a
well-known
musician already established
in Beach Music going on to claim Carolina Beach Music
Awards for Group of the Year, Song of the Year, Male
Vocalist, and Entertainer of the Year. Mark also won
Smoothie of the Year for 2005 and 2006.
Compilation albums Mark has recorded on include
All Aboard 4 in 2004 with “Dixie Moon,” Totally Beach
for Kids, a benefit CD for "Victory Junction Gang" in
2005, Soul Street Cafe with “Doesn't Get Any Better,”
and Now and Then from Judy's House of Oldies with
“Head Over Heels In Love” in 2007.
In June of 2007, Mark joined songwriter and
entertainer, Jim Quick and the Coastline Band then
recorded his first solo album in August of 2007 which
included two original songs he wrote.

Dancing On the Edge News***
Clay McClinton (Delbert’s son) appears for the
first time as part of a Beach Music compilation. Clay
appears in part through Cassie Fox, Promotional
Director for Shanty’s Records, who had been talking
to Clay’s agent.
Mark Roberts brings a new song, already charting, outside his recent CDs. “Don’t Let the Sun
Catch You Crying” was a breath-stopper at the recent Carolina Beach Music Awards in North Myrtle
Beach and the Alabama Theatre.
Clifford Curry has supplied “I Love Women” from
the 80s and “Set Me Free” from the 90s. CEO David
Wade includes them because, in his words, “they’re
both forgotten songs.”
Lakeside Drive Band doesn’t have a CD - yet. But
both of their songs are already Beach charted, “Candy
Girl” went to #1, and “I’m Still In Love with You,” a
collaboration with Gene Pharr of the Continentals is
riding up the charts now.
Gary Lowder, who fronts for the Carolina Breakers, appears solo here on an original composition,
“Been There Before.”
