KGA has changed the format of the seasonal newsletter to make it more accessible to you! Inspire others to be active by sharing the newsletter. Kingston Gets Active Month KGA Month KGA Month is back for September! Throughout the month, try a new activity for FREE! Activities such as cheerleading, fencing, horseback riding, curling, speed skating, martial arts, fitness, gymnastics, yoga, dance, swimming, pickle ball will be offered so don't miss out on great FREE opportunities. Also, don't miss "Try the Y" Fridays, the City of Kingston's "Fitness Frenzy Week", and Queen's Athletic and Recreation Centre "Fitness Free for All" Week! There is something for every age and ability, all absolutely free. Check out Kingston Gets Active's website and Facebook page for all the details, as well as for updates and newly added activities. Kingston Gets Active Month Calendar Grade 5 and 9 ActivPass Grade 5 and 9 ActivPass A new school year means another year of the ActivPass for students in grade 5 or 9. Take advantage of all the free activities, resources and transportation Kingston has to offer throughout the entire year. New this year: the Queen's Athletics and Recreation Centre is free for those with an ActivPass. Check out the KGA website for more information and to find out what is free with your pass! Passes will be distributed at schools starting Sept. 26. For more information visit our website. Seeking Volunteers Are you passionate about leading an active lifestyle? Want to motivate and inform others about becoming more active? Sign up to be a Kingston Gets Active Volunteer Ambassador! Ambassadors attend community events, give presentations, lead fit breaks, and help out in so many other ways. A free training will be offered in October to offer you all the skills you need. Check our website for more information, for an application form, or to get in touch. New Funding for Kingston Gets Active! $14,400 in support of Kingston Gets Active’s initiatives to Get Kingston More Active, with the YMCA of Kingston and other community partners Kingston, ON – Kingston Gets Active is thrilled to announce new funding which supports increased opportunities for residents to get physically active. The project was funded by the Government of Ontario’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport through the Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund (OSRCF). The OSRCF grant will help to increase the reach of Kingston Gets Active initiatives such as Kingston Gets Active Month, which offers free activities during September and April for the entire community; the Grade 5 and 9 ActivPass, which gives students free access to recreation facilities to swim, skate and use the gym; Play Kits, which are used by organizations and available for check out, to increase physical literacy for all ages; and the training of volunteer physical activity ambassadors to spread the word. Kingston Gets Active is a partnership which works together to raise awareness of the benefits of physical activity and helps to create and enhance opportunities that will enable our residents to be physically active on a regular basis. Kingston Gets Active is made up of many contributing community partners: the YMCA of Kingston, the City of Kingston, KFL&A Public Health, the Limestone District School Board, the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, Kingston Community Health Centres, Queen’s University, Queen’s Athletic and Recreation Centre, Metis Nation of Ontario, Canadian Forces Kingston, the Boys and Girls Club, the Seniors Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, the Government of Ontario, and Community Response to Neighborhood Concerns. The OSRCF provides funding to eligible recipients for projects that increase opportunities “for participation in physical activity, building physical literacy as the foundation for lifelong activity and strengthening the capacity of the sport and recreation sector in Ontario communities. Walking Tours of Kingston App Walking Tours of Kingston App The City of Kingston has developed it's first Walking Tour App! This new FREE Walking Tour of Kingston GPS based app allows users to go on walking tours of Kingston. Wander through our lively downtown streets and get to know the people in the shops and on the streets as you discover Kingston through our walking tours. Offered in 14 different languages, the Walking Tours of Kingston app provides many different walking tours. Each tour varies on length but allows the user to learn the rich history and culture Kingston has to offer all while being active! Visit the City of Kingston website for more information. EVENTS Free Drop-in Sports League for 13-18 year olds Thursdays 6:00 - 8:00, All school year beginning September 8th Police Athletic League at the Boys and Girls Club, 1300 Bath Road The Police Athletic League offers a free co-ed, drop-in sports league supported by Kingston Police and a number of community agencies. Sports will rotate throughout the school year. Transportation is provided from the North End of Kingston. No experience is required. This is a welcoming and friendly opportunity for teens ages 13-18 to engage in physical activity. Recreation and Leisure Showcase The Boys and Girls Club of Kingston (1300 Bath Rd.) will be hosting a Recreation and Leisure Showcase Saturday September 10, 2016 from 10 am2pm. The showcase will feature activities for seniors, families, teens, adults and kids. Shop and compare programs, watch the ongoing demonstrations, and register for programs on-site! Admission is free. Free Try It Week in Amherstview Free Try it Week running September 6-10 at The Leisure and Activity Centre, 108 Amherst Dr., Amherstview. Contact information is 613-6345355, smcneill@loyalist.ca. Check out their website for a schedule. Note: there are more try-it weeks from Queen's ARC & City of Kingston, as well as many try-it activities in the Kingston Gets Active Month calendar! Cutting Edge Fencing & RMC Fencing Sunday Sept 11. Children up to age 9 can try mini-musketeer fencing from 111 at the KMCSC as part of CFB Kingston’s Garrison Funfest. People of all ages can try fencing at an open house from 1-3 at RMC’s newly renovated fencing salle (17 Point Frederick Dr on the RMC campus). www.cuttingedgefencing.ca 613-329-0221 Note: there are more opportunities to try free fencing in the Kingston Gets Active Month calendar! Come Try Ringette Free Event Free Come Try Ringette event on Saturday, September 17th at 1pm at the Invista Centre (Rona Pad). There will be a parent session immediately following with information on registration and the sport as well as snacks and activities for the kids. 186th Kingston Fall Fair The annual Kingston Fall Fair will be held September 15-18, 2016 at the Kingston Memorial Centre (303 York St). This 4 day fair will include livestock shows, indoor horse shows, country singing competitions, competitions and much more. Come walk around and explore the expo! http://www.kingstonfair.com Kingston Dragon Boat Festival Register a team or spectate the dragon boat racing at the annual Kingston Dragon Boat Festival this September 17, 2016. This 400m race is held at Emma Martin Park (1 Cataraqui Street) and is a fun team building event and BBQ to celebrate! http://www.kingstondbfestival.com Scarecrow Festival The Scarecrow Festival will be held on Saturday September 24 from 12-3pm at the Kingston Community Health Centre (263 Weller Ave). The Festival will be the kick-off for the KCHC Community Health and Wellbeing Week (September 26-October 1, 2016). Aquatic and Lifesaving Courses The Kingston Military Community Sports Centre is offering several Advanced Aquatic and Lifesaving courses this Fall. Classes include: Bronze Star with Standard First Aid CPR & AED, Bronze Cross with Standard First Aid, Bronze Medallion with Emergency First Aid and Bronze Cross/Medallion with Standard Frist Aid Level C and AED. Open Thursday-Sunday from September 29-October 16 and nightly from October 20-October 30, Fort Fright is sure way to get scared (while getting your steps in!) Fort Fright is both an indoor and outdoor attraction so dress for the weather! Katarokwi Indigenous Day of Wellness Friday October 14, 2016 from 1:00-7:00pm, Kingston Community Health Centre, located at 263 Weller Ave., will be having a Katarokwi Indigenous Day of Wellness. Events include SOADI foot care clinics, smoking cessation, reflexology treatment, cancer screening and many other wellness booths. Thank you, Kingston Gets Active Summer Students!
