Dave “Doc” Medich Established in 1989, IVHOG is celebrating it’s 22nd year as a Harley Owners Group chapter. IV Hoggers, In business for over 65 years, Dean’s Harley Davidson of Souderton, PA is our sponsoring Dealer. Our Monthly Chapter Meetings are held on the first Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall 75 N. Main St. Sellersville, PA. For information regarding membership or chapter events, contact any officer listed herein. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Director’s Ramblings 1 Chapter Meeting Minutes 3 Calendar/ Events 6 Feature s & Stories 7 Business and Classified Section 10 Officer Directory 13 As the riding season draws to a close I want to provide my perspective as to what this club is about and why you should all be proud to be members. So, I want to summarize here what we do, how we interact with the community at large and how we raise and spend money. First, I think it’s important to talk about what we do as a club because we on the Board believe that IVHOG has something for everyone. Riding. First and foremost, we are a riding club. We have two planned club rides following chapter meetings each month during riding season. On other Sundays there are the informal “rides to nowhere”. At least once each season, club members also informally meet to go on an overnight ride of some distance. There have been rides to West Virginia and Vermont, for example. And, of course, riding is involved in practically every other event we do. Support for our members. I am very proud of the way our members step up when other members are in need. Sometimes we pass the hat in meetings. This year some 30 members assembled to lead Sal Albano’s son home upon his return from Iraq. Sometimes, it’s just a card we all sign for an ailing member. Whether it’s little things or much more that we do, it all adds up. Membership activities. Throughout the year, but especially in winter months, we hold several parties for members. Our LOH and Activities Officers plan and work hard to bring the membership together for dances, dinners, movie nights and the annual Holiday Party. Club funds help underwrite these events which all members (and often families) are invited to participate in. Community Outreach. IVHOG believes in helping out in the community and Deans and The Motor Company very much encourage this involvement. And IVHOG is involved in a big way; for example: o Annual BCC&Y Toy Run – coordinating a ride of several hundred bikes o MDA – this year our Golf Outing raised over $700 for this charity o Manna on Main Street o Homeless Veterans Coat Drive o Warriors Watch Support o Annual Hogs and Dogs – over 35 members participated at Spring Meadow Nursing Home o Ride for the Heroes – We were the Number 1 participating club again! Interaction with other MCs. What I have learned over time is how important it is that we have good relations with other clubs in the Delaware Valley. So developing the HOG chapters’ relationships has become a priority for me. OC TOBER 2012 Director’s Ramblings …. Continued PAGE 2 We seem to have lost touch over the years with some Annually our books are audited by a volunteer team of the local HOG clubs and it is important we move of members who are not on the Board. We always pass these back in the right direction. Supporting their events with flying colors. So, do the math and you’ll see that is a start and from there, the opportunities and comradeour income and outgo are pretty balanced. Our main ship that can evolve is endless. Events such as the Tri priority is to insure IVHOG is on a solid foundation State HOG chili cook-off and the softball game this year both from a membership and financial perspective. We against Lehigh Valley HOG are two examples of on the board take our jobs seriously as we balance the strengthening our ties. I will have more to say about IC in a future “Ramblings”. have grown so fast. We will continue to evolve as a club but I believe we have a solid foundation on which function without sufficient funds to conduct its business to grow and to always be a club members can be proud of. As always, I encourage you to participate in any of and ours is no exception. Our main sources of revenue are: the wide range of activities we offer to our members, o annual dues - $15/member including standing for an officer position. Remember, o Monthly meeting fee - $2/member you will only get out of the club what you put into it. Raising and spending money. The German-Hungarian Club which Later…..DOC we use for smaller meetings costs about half that. Provide donuts, juice and coffee for each chapter meeting...at least $60/meeting. Pay for ongoing expenses such as printing the newsletter (available at Deans), membership material (ID cards, new member packets, annual waivers). Provide charitable donations Underwrite some costs for the various functions we hold Underwrite costs for apparel with IVHOG and HOG logos. This activity is barely a breakeven one for the club. Well, the better question is: Why do WE ride? Let’s go back to 1973: I had just graduated high school and Denny had finished his 4 1/2 years with the Navy. Living less than 2 miles apart, Den would hop on his 650 Yamaha and coast down the road to pick me up for a ride! He had to park across the street; my parents rented and the landlord would not allow Den to park that bad motorcycle on his property!!!! We would ride the roads through Wycombe, Pineville, Rushland and Forest Grove so much that we knew the corners and never slowed down. Sometimes Denny would lean back and say hold on, pop a wheelie, and we would ride that as far as we could! I loved it!!!! As I got more comfortable, we would take rides to Seaside and Lancaster with his cousin Ben and friend Gene. Once on the way to Lancaster our friend Gene on a chopper pulled up to the light and revved his bike to Den, needless to say off they went; Denny sometimes forgot I was on the back!! I would just hold on tighter, laughing the whole time. After getting married in 1975 we decided it was time to get responsible and save for a house. There went the Yamaha and a “55 Chevy” that we owned. But Denny always thought that someday we would have a “Harley” parked in that garage! March 5th of 1986 was “our proudest day”: our son Mike was born. And, of course, along came the toys: the usual battery operated bike, and numerous bicycles and snowmobiles. Denny and Mike raced go-karts for a couple years in a friend’s back yard they would go 40 to 45 mph! It was great FatherSon time. PAGE 7 As they started to tire from that back came the thoughts of a Harley. We found the nearest Harley Dealership, “DEANS”, and thought let’s just go look?! After the 10th visit of just looking I told the salesman Dave: “we are not leaving here tonight without that Blue Wide Glide; start the paperwork!!” Denny just smiled and that was the best decision I (we) ever made. Once we got comfortable riding we started taking longer trips and, of course, back to those roads in Wycombe and Pineville. And, yes, we did the corners the same but we did keep both wheels on the ground. It was just like back in the day!!! We trailered the bikes to Daytona with friends Patty and Rick. From there we rode to the “Keys” going across the 7 mile bridge; that is when “D.O.T.” and I became good friends. We had many conversations on the back of that bike on our various rides. Twice we went to Sturgis- trailering both times. Making plans to ride out next year! To be out there riding on those roads with not a care in the world- nothing gets better! We loved the Wide Glide and I thought I could ride that back seat forever! That was before we took a trip to Virginia and down to the “Tale of the Dragon” with our fearless leader John Quigley. Great ride, great friends but that back seat was starting to get on my nerves!!! We rode through the hills of Virginia in a bad storm, with thunder and lightning all over and I could not wait to get off! OCTOBER 2012 Why I Ride By Patty Eastburn When we stopped I got off the bike gave my husband that loving wife look (you know the look) fell to the ground yelling “my ass hurts and I am not getting back on that damn seat!!” So, we now also own an Electric Glide with a very big padded seat! What a loving husband!!! Now back to Mike. Denny came home from work all excited, somebody had traded in a 2007 yellow Sportster and Mike had to have it. So now we have 3 Harley’s parked in our garage. As Mike got more comfortable riding, he joined Indian Valley Hog with us and of course wanted to go on group rides. His first was Barb Sudell’s Woodstock ride and he got broken in fast. And, yes, after that ride he bought a new padded seat. One of my favorite pictures is of Denny and Mike sitting on their Harleys in the driveway, talking before leaving on their first ride to New York. On the trip Mike and Denny were riding side by side, Mike motioned to his father with his arm stretched out and they fist pumped together! PAGE 8 Why do I ride? It’s because of memories like that which I will never forget! On another group ride we were on River Road with Mike in front and we right behind, and I watched as Mike was leaning in and taking those corners just like his father did years ago! Memories! The horizons are never ending for this family! How lucky I (we) are to be able to ride as a family, to have such good longtime friends to ride with and new Indian Valley friends to take trips with!!! That is why I (we) ride!!! Love Patty Eastburn OCTOBER 2012 PAGE 9 Hogs and Dogs Hey Guys: Which has become the norm and not the exception, IVHOG has again outdone itself. I can not begin say how thrilled I am to be a member of our club after seeing so many attending this year’s HOGS and DOGS event. I was blown completely away twice yesterday. The first time was when I and the “Breakfast Club Riders” approached WAWA and I saw how many of you were waiting to go to Spring Meadows. A definite lump in the throat moment. The second time was seeing my mother in attendance as I looked across the parking lot from where I parked and saw her sitting at a table. Definitely was a little more then a lump in the throat for that one. Mom was in the hospital for a few days and as of 8 AM Saturday, was not expected to be discharged that day. Shame we couldn’t get her on a bike. She did say perhaps next year. Congratulations to all of you for a job well done in bringing so much sunshine to so many on such a cloudy day. And a very sincere heart filled thank you to all from Mom and me. Love you guys…….Tom Giles OCTOBER 2012 PAGE 10 OCTOBER 2012 BUSINESS DIRECTORY PAGE 11 State of Business – Bike Illuminators As a member of IV HOG for 7 years now, we wanted to share this information with the club first. As of January 2012, Bike Illuminators is currently on hiatus. I have been dealing with numerous medical limitations that have kept me from actively supporting the business for the last 5 + months now. We are in search of a possible buyer for the business and would like to keep it in the local area if possible. We do have some inventory in stock so if anyone has been on the fence about adding lights now is a good time to reach out to us. We have kits in many different colors and they will be sold below retail pricing. We also have some other items such as Brake Lights, Flex Arrays and Turn Signal Clusters. Over the coming weeks/months we will be looking to sell the Business which will include the current inventory along with the domains and Name. We have enjoyed every bike we have lit up to make it a bit safer and want to thank IV HOG for all the support over the years. If anyone is interested in any items please feel free to contact us at Sales@HotLeds.com or you can call 215-510-5245 and leave a message. I still plan to be a part of IV HOG and to attend the local events now as a spectator not as a vendor.
