Pub l i sher s’ U p d a t e exC EP tional C onnections Dear Partners, “There is nothing on earth comparable to it.” Author Harriet Beecher Stowe once commented these words about Silver Springs. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings called it “a secret and lovely place.” Across the centuries, countless people have marveled over this wondrous natural gem. George Rainsford Fairbanks once said of the waters bubbling up from our beloved Springs, “It is not strange that they should be deemed to possess a renovating elixir, and to promise, to those who would dwell by their banks and disport in their waters, a restoration of youthful vigor and energy.” If you had the pleasure of visiting the Silver Springs of years ago, you can surely relate. In recent years, however, the Springs have not been nearly as inviting. But now, “Nature’s Theme Park” is being restored to its former glory. We couldn’t be more thrilled about this news, and we invite you to read all about the details in our cover story this month. We believe it’s perfect timing, too, as we are seeing our entire community itself not only have “a restoration of youthful vigor Inside This Issue and energy,” but increasingly improve on a daily basis when it comes to our economy, job growth, education, international trade, and more. As you peruse this issue, which includes a variety of stories about a few of the many wonders of our area, including information about beautiful event venues for your next special event, details of a grant the CEP was awarded to assist with the Ireland trade mission, and news of recent ribbon cuttings, be sure to consider how you can further involve yourself in our community’s growth. Perhaps you will apply for participation in the CEP’s Leadership Ocala Marion program, or simply attend upcoming networking events. Just remember, the CEP’s mission is to be THE catalyst for a prosperous community. Be sure to be a part of it. Through the U.S. Commercial Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Gold Key Matching Service assists businesses with exporting initiatives through several areas including: customized market and industry briefings, market research, pre-set appointments with prospective trade partners, post- meeting debriefings with trade specialists to develop follow-up strategies, and assistance with interpreter or clerical services. The CEP is working with Ocala’s twin city partners in Newbridge, Ireland, the U.S. Embassy in Dublin, the U.S. Export Assistance Center of the U.S. Department of Commerce, and Enterprise Florida, Inc. to promote a trade mission to Newbridge, and encourage businesses to consider options for a global footprint. Florida is home to one in five of the nation’s exporters of which 95% are small to medium-sized businesses and account for more than $66 billion in sales to over 200 interna- tional trading partners. Newbridge, Ireland shares many similarities with its Ocala twin, such as a strong industrial base and a prolific equine community, making this an ideal destination for businesses looking to partner with other businesses in the European Union. The mission will focus on both of these industry sectors and will include at least one Gold Key Matching Service per participant. To learn more about the trade mission and how your business can take advantage of this exceptional opportunity, please plan to attend the next information session in June or call the CEP at 352.629.8051. ■ Travel with Us to the Emerald Isle! Eight, three-person teams, each having at least one representative of each school competed against each other in a troubleshooting competition. Each team was presented with a troubleshooting scenario for a standard Windows-based computer system. As a part of this scenario, there were twelve issues of varying complexity inserted into each system which had to be resolved. Each team was given a 30 minute time limit to resolve the issues, access the Internet, and browse to a 20 Partner Connections • specified webpage. Additionally, there were several operating system tasks that each team needed to complete. The winning team was determined by the number of issues resolved within the time allotted. Mr. William Kratzer, CTAE’s applied cybersecurity instructor stated, “The goals of today’s event were to present real-world scenarios the students will face once they complete their programs, and provide an opportunity for our students to demonstrate the skills they have learned thus far. I was very pleased with their performances.” June 2015 The three members of the winning team were Whitney Metzger (CTAE), Erik Johnson (MTI), and Sean McAtee (MTI). One of the winning team members, Whitney Metzger commented, “I really enjoyed this event. It was a great experience in troubleshooting, and working as part of a team. Teamwork was a crucial part of the competition.” Each member of the winning team received an Amazon Fire tablet donated by The Ocala IT Professionals and the Ocala/Marion County Chamber & Economic Partnership (CEP). ■ June 2015 • Partner Connections 21 2 15 ENTERTAINMENT SERIES GREATEST HITS: “I’m Henry Vlll, I Am”, “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter”, “There’s a Kind of a Hush” Tickets: $35-39 JUNE 6 JUNE 13 JUNE 20 JULY 4 JULY 18 Presents their 3rd Annual Red, White and A Salu15te July 4th, 20 OS O Blue: Troops to our ors open at 7:00 PM (Do 6:00 PM) ral Admission • $19 Gene e Commons FL 34481 r at Circle Squar SW 80th, Ocala d at 8395 e Cultural Cente Circle Squar e Cultural Center is locate & Conductor our great Live Bait: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett Tickets: $14-16 Dance Party with Dunning Shaw AND The 45’s Tickets: $10 Motown Magic: A Tribute to Motown Tickets: $19-21 (RESERVED TABLE SEATING) ce of ctor independen to shining , Music Dire sea celebrate the purpose: to , singing from thew Wardell The Circle Squar Ocala Symphony Orchestra Presents the 3rd Annual Red, White and OSO Blue: A Salute to Our Troops Tickets: $19 (352) 351-1606 ocalasymphony.com and Mat for one of Sousa country past l concert is marching to the beat protect our food, This specia will have you men and women who ons will be filled with nation.
