HORIZON CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HANDBOOK Class of 2016 As of August 2015 Seniors and Parents: The Senior Handbook provides dates, deadlines and information needed to successfully manage your senior year at HCHS. Within these pages you will find all the information needed to navigate both the challenges and the excitement of your senior year. Use the calendar to plan and prepare for the year. Page 4 Details of Dates Oct 14-Jostens Meeting: Students will meet with Dan Peters from Jostens to review their packets for ordering their caps/gowns, announcements and other graduation items. These packets will come home for parent review. (See Jostens sections for details.) Oct 28-Jostens Orders: Jostens will return to collect money and orders for graduation items. All orders placed after this date will need to be made directly with Jostens. Dec 2-Late Jostens Deadline: All Jostens orders for caps, gowns, and announcements must be submitted to Jostens by this date in order to be included in the Horizon delivery date of March 1. March 1-Yearbook Deadline: Yearbook pictures and Parent Reflections deadline. All items are due by this date. (See Senior Picture and Yearbook Details) March 9-Graduation Announcements Delivered: Jostens orders will be distributed. All balances must be paid on or before this date to receive orders. You may bring a check for the balance, payable to Jostens, on this day. April 1-Spirit of Horizon Scholarship: A $1,000 college scholarship is being offered to one applicant of the Spirit of Horizon Scholarship. Applications are available in the registrar’s office beginning April 1, with complete details included. Applications are due no later than April 28 for consideration of this scholarship. The winner will be announced at Senior Tribute. Page 5 Details of Dates April 1-Post High School Plans: Senior and/or parents need to submit to the registrar’s office your student’s Post High School Plans. List the specific name of the college, military branch, work force or if they are undecided. This information will be listed in the graduation program and used for statistical purposes. Please submit this form to the registrar by May 2. April 28-Spirit of Horizon Scholarship Applications Due to Registrar May 2-Senior Shadow Grades Pulled: Senior shadow grades are the current grades as of Monday, May 2. These grades are used to determine honor status for graduation. The grades that are earned through the completion of the senior’s last day of school will be reported on the final transcript. May 2-Post High School Plans Scholarships Awarded Form Due May 16-Senior Outing, details to be Announced May 17-Locker Clean Out, Textbooks In: All senior lockers must be cleaned and checked out. All textbooks and library books must be turned in to the teachers. Any outstanding textbooks will be billed for replacement costs. May 17-Caps, Gowns and Reserved Seat Savers Distributed: Caps and gowns will be distributed to seniors on May 18. It is the student’s responsibility to iron their gown and bring it back to wear at the graduation ceremony. Each senior will be given 10 seat savers for graduation. You will have access to the gym to place these from 6:00 to 6:30 pm, prior to the graduation ceremony on Monday, May 23. Page 6 Details of Dates May 19-Seniors Last Day: All school work must be turned in to ensure each student is receiving a passing grade. Students earning an “F” in a required course will be required to recover the “F” grade to a passing grade of “D” or better. Also, any student who is taking an Off-Site Independent Study Course must have all work completed and a transcript grade in to the registrar by May 16. May 23-Memory Tables and Senior Tribute: (See page 14 for details.) May 23-Graduation Rehearsal, Senior Lunch: (See page 14 for details.) Mandatory rehearsal begins following Senior Tribute. Following rehearsal, seniors will be treated to a to lunch out. May 23-Graduation @ 7:00, doors open at 6:30: Seniors are to be upstairs in room 211 by 6:30, dressed in their caps, gowns and honor accessories. Students are not allowed to wear shorts or flip flops for the ceremony. Mid-June-Final transcript mailed to selected college: Final grades and transcripts will be processed in the weeks following the end of the school year on June 3. All semester two grades will be posted to the senior’s final transcript. If a senior wants their final, 8th semester transcript sent to their destination college, it is the responsibility of each senior to make sure that happens. Therefore by the end of the school year, the students must provide the registrar with a stamped, letter sized, addressed envelope to the college that they want this transcript sent. There is no charge for this final transcript. Page 7 COLLEGE PREPARATION and SAT/ ACT TESTS College Application: Verify with each college or university their timeline for submitting an application. Request transcript and Teacher/Administrator recommendations. Early Application Deadline: Between Nov 1— Dec 1. Regular Application Deadline: By Feb 1. Early Action: Notified by college in Dec or Jan. Regular Decision: Notified by college by mid April on. The first 3 transcripts are free, then $5.00 each thereafter. Please complete form and provide required documents and payment for processing. Final grades and transcripts will be processed in the weeks following the end of the school year. College Bound Athletes Registering with NCAA and NAIA: Any student planning to play division level sports should register with the NCAA and the NAIA Eligibility Centers. The following items need to be submitted no later than March 1, 2016. 1. Senior portrait in JPEG file of at least 1-2 MB (300 dpi). 2. Baby picture, youth & a family picture 1-2 MB. Please give pictures via hard copy to Ms. Redwing, or on a disc or thumb drive. If you clearly label your disc, thumb drive, or picture, it will be returned to you by the end of the week. (These formats may be turned into front office or turned into Tiffany Redwing, Yearbook Advisor) 3. Parent Reflection: Parent Reflection is comments from parents, of 50 words or less about your student. This can be praise, memory, encouragement, etc. Please email to tredwing@horizon-christian.org, or drop off hard copy to the front office, Attn:Tiffany. If your senior picture is not submitted by March 1, we will be forced to use your picture from your student ID. Tiffany Redwing, Yearbook Adviser tredwing@horizon-christian.org Photos and Parent Reflections will be used in the yearbook and photos will also be used in a slide show at Senior Tribute and graduation. Page 10 SCHOLARHSIP & END OF YEAR INFO Spirit of Horizon Scholarship Applications are available beginning April 1 for the Spirit of Horizon Scholarship. Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.50. Applications are available from the registrar and must be completed no later than April 28 for consideration. Winner will be announced at Senior Tribute. Shadow Grades: Senior shadow grades will be collected on May 2 These grades are used to determine valedictorian, salutatorian, & honor graduates. Grades earned through the completion of senior’s last day will be reported on final transcript. FUTURE Post High School Plans Form is due May 2 . Pick form up from Registrar’s office. The Post High School Plan published in the Graduation Program and also the information is used to track what our graduates are up to following graduation. Last Day of School: Last day of school for sen- iors is Thurs, May 19. However, lockers will be cleaned and textbooks collected on May 17. Page 11 CAPS, GOWNS, and ANNOUNCEMENTS Horizon partners with Jostens to supply seniors with caps, gowns, announcements and various “senior bling.” Jostens will meet with students three times at Horizon to service the seniors. Please take note of important dates. Oct 14– Jostens hands out order packets Oct 28– Jostens collects order packets March 9– Jostens delivers graduation orders Students who miss the Oct 28 deadline for orders will need to place orders directly to Jostens using the contact information below. Please note, all orders must be submitted by December 2 to be included in the Horizon delivery date of March 9. Caps and gowns are provided by Horizon, therefore do not include this cost in your total bill. Acknowledgment will be made to our valedictorian, salutatorian, scholar graduates, Timothian Award winners, and honor graduates, as well as other areas of recognition. Parents and families: please plan to join us for a special time of memories, worship, and honoring our seniors for all that they have achieved. We will be serving coffee and refreshments. Memory Boards: Students and parents can set up “Memory Board” displays that feature special memories, awards and pictures throughout their life. Each student will be allowed 1/3 of a 5ft round table. Black tablecloths will be provided. Set up time will be from 8:00-9:00 am on May 23. Beginning at 9:00 am, all families, as well as the rest of the HS students and staff, will be invited to view the memory boards. Following the Senior Tribute, all seniors will participate in a mandatory graduation rehearsal. Once rehearsal is complete, seniors will be treated to lunch sponsored by the high school. Page 13 Graduation Monday, May 23 at 7:00 pm in gym Graduation Ceremony: Our graduation ceremony will take place on Monday, May 23 at 7:00 pm in the school gym. Seniors are to be upstairs in room 211 by 6:30 pm, to dress in caps, gowns , and honor accessories, and to line up for the processional. Caps, Gowns and Seat Savers May 17- Caps, Gowns and Seat Savers, will be sent home with students on May 17. Iron gowns on low settings. Reserved Seating: Seat savers will be sent home with students on May 17. Each senior will be given 10 seat saver signs to place on chairs in the gym from 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm on Monday, May 23. Doors open at 6:30 pm for guests and to the public. Photo Opportunities: Family and Friends will be invited to the front of the gym where there will be plenty of room and time to capture your graduate. Page 14 GRADUATION CEREMONY QUALIFICATIONS Any student who has not met the academic requirements (total credits, core requirements) for graduation will not be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony or receive the HCHS diploma unless prior approval has been granted by the principal. A student may be excluded from participation for disciplinary reasons. Determination of disciplinary exclusion shall be made by the principal in consultation with appropriate administrative and instructional personnel. Students who have financial accounts that are not current by the Friday preceding the graduation ceremony, will in most cases still be allowed to participate in the ceremony, but their diploma will be withheld until all accounts have been made current. (As stated in Student Handbook.) Appropriate Dress for Graduation Dress for Boys: Collared shirts, no jeans, no flip flops. Dress for Girls: Modest dresses, no flip flops.
