The Story of Romeo and Juliet
At the beginning of the play Romeo is in love with Rosaline. Lord Capulet is
planning a masked ball (a party where all the guests wear masks) and invites
everyone except the Montagues. The Capulet servant who is delivering the
invitations cannot read. As Romeo helps him, he can see that Rosaline is going
to the party. He decides to go to the ball with his friend, Mercutio.
At the ball, Romeo quickly forgets Rosaline when he sees Juliet. He falls in love
with her. Tybalt, Lord Capulet’s nephew, sees Romeo and wants to kill him.
Lord Capulet stops him.
Romeo speaks to Juliet and finds out she is a Capulet. Juliet falls in love with
Romeo. After the ball, Romeo jumps over the wall into Juliet’s garden. Juliet
comes on to the balcony and says Romeo’s name several times. They talk
about their love for each other and plan their wedding.
Romeo goes to see Friar Laurence who agrees to marry them.
Romeo’s friends, Benvolio and Mercutio are walking in the town. A group of
Capulets, including Tybalt, are about to fight Mercutio when Romeo arrives.
Tybalt and Mercutio start fighting and Mercutio is killed. Romeo then kills
Tybalt.
Before Romeo can run away, the Prince of Verona arrives and says Romeo must
leave Verona and go to live in another town, Mantua.
Juliet finds out about her cousin Tybalt’s death and Romeo’s punishment. The
Nurse arranges for them to see each other for the last time.
Juliet’s mother comes into her room and finds Juliet crying. She thinks she’s
upset about Tybalt’s death. Lady Capulet is bringing what she thinks is some
good news: Juliet is to marry Count Paris.
Juliet goes to see Friar Laurence. He has a plan. Before her wedding to Count
Paris, Juliet will drink a special potion. This will make her look as if she is dead.
Then Friar Laurence will call Romeo to come and meet her. They can then run
away together.
On the day of her wedding, Juliet is found ‘dead.’ She is taken to the family
tomb.
Romeo hears about Juliet’s death. Friar’s Laurence’s letter which explains the
plan, arrives too late.
Romeo buys some poison and decides to go and see Juliet for the last time.
When Romeo gets to the tomb, Paris is there. Paris tries to stop Romeo from
seeing Juliet. They fight and Romeo kills Paris. Romeo then drinks the poison
and dies next to Juliet.
