Free Pattern Instructions
Split and Spin Pinwheels Quilt
The Split and Spin Template is specifically sized to use precut
fabric squares or squares cut from fabric yardage. This particular
template works with four different sizes of squares that are split
into rectangles.
Create split patchwork rectangles using 10" x 10", 8" x 8", 6" x
6", or 5" x 5" squares and the Split and Spin Template. Then stitch
the split patchwork rectangles together for quilt blocks that pack
a visual punch.
Be sure to read “Split and Spin Template Basic Instructions”
before starting your project. They explain the process used to
prepare and cut the squares and assemble the blocks. After familiarizing yourself with the process, proceed with instructions for
three delightful pinwheel blocks and the eye-catching quilt to
incorporate them into.
The quilt starts with 10" squares, commonly known as
“Layer Cakes.”

Split and Spin Template Basic Instructions:
Note: All seams are ¼" unless otherwise noted.
Note: The following instructions refer to using Layer Cakes or 10" x
10" squares, but 8" x 8", 6" x 6", or 5" x 5" squares can be used in
the same manner to create the same block designs, just smaller sizes.
1. Select and prepare fabrics. The most dramatic results are
achieved by selecting one light and one dark colored fabric.
Choose one of these options:
• Option 1: Use two Layer Cake squares (10" fabric squares):
- Select one Layer Cake square in each of two different
color ways (e.g., one light and one dark fabric).

- Stabilize all fabrics well using spray
starch or a starch alternative such
as Best Press.™
- Double check measurements
of precut squares, and trim if
needed.
• Option 2: Use two 10" wide strips
(one dark and one light) cut from
fabric yardage:
- Stabilize all fabrics well
using spray starch or a
starch alternative such as
Best Press.™

- Cut one 10" wide crosswise strip from each of
two fabrics, using one
dark and one light fabric.

Templates sometimes have a mind of their own.
They can shift during cutting, making the cut
shapes less than accurate. To keep the template
under control and perfectly aligned, our template has nonslip
gripper lines added to the underside of the template. You may
consider adding TrueGrips nonslip gripper dots to the top of
the template when you are cutting mirror images with the
template. Then you can concentrate more on cutting, and worry
less about keeping the template aligned.

Split and Spin Pinwheels Blocks and Quilt Instructions
The following instructions give fabric squares and cutting directions for each of three quilt block designs. Select the required
number of background and contrast fabric squares as noted in the cutting instructions.
Learn how to create each block, and then follow instructions for using that block design in a dramatic quilt.
