Term 1 Week 10 “In All Things May God Be Glorified” Our Lady of the Nativity School Monday 1st April 2013 OLN Parish Administrator Fr Paul Slyney In the Parish of Our Lady of the Nativity The Core Value for this term is Respect. Dear Parents of OLN, John 20: 1 - 9 The Empty Tomb. 1 On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” 3 So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. 4 They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; 5 he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. 6 When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, 7 and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. 8 Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. 9 For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples returned home. Easter is the holiest and most solemn season in the church’s calendar and marks the most significant events of Holy Week. It marks the end of Lent, the period in which we prepare ourselves through prayer, self-denial, fasting and service, to celebrate the resurrection. Through His death and resurrection, Christ freed us all from sin and gave us the promise of new life, both in this world and the next. Our Holy Week celebrations were a most beautiful and prayerful experience last week. I would like to thank all those parents who were able to join us. My thanks to our RE Co-ordinator, Liz Le Breton for her work in planning and preparing each of the liturgies and to the teachers who prepared the children so well. I congratulate the children for the manner in which they participated. At each liturgy, their reverence was truly inspirational. The children who presented the reflections were so reverent and beautiful, and retold the events of Jesus life throughout Holy Week. All the children from Kindergarten to Stage 3 are to also be praised for the manner in which they listened and responded to the liturgies. It was a meaningful and prayerful time at OLN. Our Easter liturgy will be this Thursday at 11.15am, you are most welcome to join us. Project Compassion Boxes: thank you to those who have returned their project compassion boxes. We would be grateful if all boxes could be returned this week. The money raised will be forwarded to Caritas who are committed to; education, sustainable livelihoods, affordable healthcare and supportive, safe environments to people around the world. Thanks to all those who have offered to help with a stall or sponsor the Spring Fair. It is great to feel the support of the school community. There are still places to be filled – so don’t be shy! Soft Drink Drive We start our Spring Fair collections with a Soft Drink Drive on Wed 10th April. Simply donate a brand name soft drink can/s to school. These will be collected and sold at the Spring Fair BBQ;- all profits going to the school to update technology. All donations are greatly appreciated. Working Bee A working bee to complete work on the Caring Group room will be on Sat April 6th commencing at 9am. The major job will be painting. The Survey is now CLOSED. The QCS has provided data from students, staff and parents about our school’s cultural behaviour, relationships and learning community and will be used assist us to focus our efforts for improvement by building on our successes to date. Cameron Lievore NAPLAN 2013 All students in Years 3 and 5 will complete the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) on the dates shown below. This program will assess the literacy and numeracy learning of students in all Australian schools. Girls Sky Blue Blouse - Peter Pan collar Boys (Number, Algebra, function and pattern; Measurement, chance and data; and Space) ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL It is a legislative requirement that children be at school, on time, every school day unless your child is sick. When your child is absent from school parents/carers are required to provide a note to the class teacher explaining the absence. Children who arrive late or leave school early also need to have the reason covered by a note from a parent/carer. If a note is not received, the absence or partial absence is entered in the class roll as unexplained. Long or Short Sleeved logo Embroidered Blue Shirt All Students Application for Exemption From Attendance at School When taking children out of school during term time, it is necessary for parents/carers to Navy Jacket (with school emblem) -will be phased out complete an Application for Exemption From Navy Trousers or Navy Track Pants Attendance at School form. Once completed, the Navy Socks & Black Shoes form is to be sent to the Principal so that a Certificate of Exemption from Attendance at School can be issued to parents. As the School Hat or School Beanie (available from School Uniform Certificate is a legal document, parents are Shop) advised to have this with them during the period of exemption that has been granted. Paralympic Talent Search day - New South Wales, Sunday 21st April The Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) is conducting the first Talent Search day for 2013 in New South Wales on Sunday 21st April in Sydney. Date: Sunday 21st April Time: 10:00am – 2:00pm Venue: Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope Gardens, Blacktown The APC is searching for students with a physical impairment, vision impairment or intellectual impairment who display the athletic potential to one day make it to Paralympic level competition. A secondary goal is to help introduce students with disabilities into regular sport and physical activity, whether that be in the school sport or club environment and the day is great way to meet representatives from a variety of sports for students to begin on their sporting pathway. Since its inception in 2005, the program has enjoyed great success testing nearly 2000 Paralympic hopefuls in every state and territory across Australia. 43 Talent Search participants represented Australia at the London Paralympic Games in 2012 winning 28 medals, including 10 gold. The APC will assist in advising which Paralympic sports are most suited to the impairment type and advise how students can best get involved in the sport. Impairment types eligible for Paralympic Sport include but are not limited to: • • • • • • Cerebral palsy or acquired brain injury Vision Impairment Amputee or limb deficiency Spinal cord Injuries (including paraplegia and quadriplegia) Short stature Intellectual impairment Pre registration is required. Classification in Paralympic sport exists to support as fair competition as possible, amongst athletes with different impairments. It forms the structure for all Paralympic competition, by grouping athletes with similar levels of functional ability into classes for equivalent competition. The outcomes of Paralympic competition then become based on athletic performance rather than on differences that exist in athletes disabilities. The APC is able to assist in facilitating classification opportunities for students across a range of Paralympic sports. Sunburn and skin cancer What is sunburn? Unfortunately too many Australians are familiar with the pain and discomfort of sunburn. Most of us have been sunburnt at least once in our lives, and many people get sunburnt regularly every summer. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources such as a solarium (tanning bed) can cause sunburn. Sunburn occurs when the amount of UV radiation your skin is exposed to is more than its ability to protect itself with melanin - the pigment that gives our skin its colour and acts to absorb UV radiation before it can damage skin cells. Skin that has been sunburnt turns red within hours - and the sunburn will continue to develop for the next one to three days. Most people who have been sunburnt also peel - which is the body's way of shedding dead and damaged skin cells and making way for the new skin underneath. You can't see or feel UV radiation. It is present every day, can be high even if the temperature feels cool and can pass through light cloud cover. The amount of time it takes to be sunburnt will depend on your skin type (fair skin will burn faster than dark skin), time of day and time of year (UV levels at the time the exposure occurs) and your environment (cement, sand, water and snow are highly reflective). For example, if you are by the pool you are exposed to direct sunlight from the sky as well as the reflected sunlight from the water. Unfortunately even though sunburn eventually fades, long term damage to skin cells remains. Even mild sunburn can increase your risk of developing melanoma and the more often you are burnt and the more severe the sunburn is, the higher your risk will be. OLN Award System The OLN Award system recognises students’ achievements at school. We encourage students to regularly trade in their Awards, instead of holding on to them for long periods.
