Kalzip forms a welcoming wave at Oklahoma University
Children’s Hospital
T
he 65,000-square-foot atrium at The
Children’s Hospital at Oklahoma
University Medical Center, Oklahoma
City is designed to serve as a hub for
the University’s sprawling Health Center
campus.

The six-storey atrium’s main feature
is a roof inspired by floating kite ribbons.
The roof uses approximately 20,000 square
feet of Kalzip 65/400 with an AluPlus Patina
finish. The centre bay of the three rolling
waves extends 70 feet beyond the front
facade to form a sheltered front entrance.
These awe-inspiring convex/concave waves
of metal and blue-green glass were also the
project’s most complex challenge.
Miles Associates, Oklahoma City is
architect of record, handling architectural
master planning, facility programming,
interior design, and construction
administration. Hellmuth, Obata+
Kassabaum, St Louis, is associate architect
responsible for developing the exterior
concept design. Opened in April 2011, the
project is the third of four phases of a master
plan that include a multi-level parking
garage, a 14-storey medical office building,
and an education centre, which opened in
2012.
Jorge Charneco, senior vice president
for health, science and technology at Miles
Associates noted that the design of the
atrium needed to consider multiple projects
while working in an active, busy hospital.
Charneco also was familiar with Kalzip’s
material and engineering capability. “Kalzip was one of the few products that
could handle the geometry of the project.
We worked closely with them through the
design process to find solutions to challenges
we encountered from the beginning. The
roof is sloped and is a combination of
metal and glazing elements, so expansion
and contraction with the roof system was a
concern. Also the atrium is in the middle of
three different buildings so we had different
lateral movements to consider and the
challenges of multiple design phases before
and after the atrium was built. Coordinating
all of that was a bit of a challenge.”
Tim Moone, senior project manager
at Miles Associates agreed that working
with the right materials and suppliers was a
big factor in the project’s ultimate success.
“Kalzip was selected because of its unique
clip system. From my perspective, the most
challenging issues we had were coordinating
the metal panel, the skylight and the roof
to work as a single unit. This required
significant coordination between Kalzip and
Supersky, the skylight manufacturer. All this
coordination effort from the design team,
the engineers at Kalzip and Supersky and the
contractors resulted in a great looking iconic
roofline.”
Ronnie Peace, vice president,
management operations for Flintco, LLC,
Oklahoma City was construction manager for
the atrium, the education centre and parking
garage. “The architect chose Kalzip because
it was the best way to make sure the slope
and roof tied together with the skylights
without worrying about leaks. The result
is that everyone loves this new entrance –
the doctors, nurses, staff and especially the
women and children and their families.”
The atrium’s circular open design
provides space for patients and visitors to
connect and relax. Its active, welcoming
interior includes 30 translucent butterflies
floating beneath the roofline and an
interactive upright water feature that
changes colours and patterns. All of the
features add to the welcoming atmosphere.
“How well the building has been received
by clients, user groups and patients is most
rewarding. We’d been working on it for so
long and were so engulfed in it we didn’t
appreciate what we were doing until it was
finished,” added Charneco.
The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical
Center also cares about the environment. The
new atrium is designed to be energy efficient.
It faces west to harvest sunlight through
the glass curtain wall and reduce electrical
daytime lighting needs. The treated exterior
glass also reduces ultra-violet radiation
to decrease cooling costs. Additional
air circulating devices draw in cooler
outside as needed to fur ther reduce

SCHOOL CENTRE REHAU - CERAMIC COVERINGS FOR
OUTSIDE AND INSIDE FROM ONE SUPPLIER
Apart from the spatial enlargement, the focus of the design concept of this new building in the School
Centre Rehau was above all on a consistent appearance as well as on aesthetic, natural and hardwearing materials at the same time. Facade ceramics and ceramic wall and floor coverings of AGROB
BUCHTAL essentially contributed to achieving this goal and besides provided scope for individual

he School Centre Rehau erected
in the 1950s to 1 9 7 0 s i s to b e
gradually transformed into a modern
educational institution of the 21st century
until 2020. The first constructional result
of the initiative “School project 20_20“ is
a new building which serves as prototype
for all further construction stages.
One of the most important objectives
of the concept of the architect Hermann
Beyer from Döhlau was the use of “natural
building mater ials which are equally
suitable for aesthetic design details and
for the elevated requirements of everyday
life at school.” In the case of the facade,
he therefore decided in favour of unglazed

facade ceramics of the system KeraTwin in
the elegant oblong format. In the interior,
he used the series EMOTION for the catering
kitchen and the series PASADO e.g. for
stairs, corridors, the assembly hall, the
refectory and the sanitary facilities.
Compared to other floor coverings,
ceramic tiles offer clear functional and
aesthetic advantages in these areas
of application. On the one hand, they
are durable, ecologically harmless,
economical, colour- and light-fast as well
as non-combustible - a safety factor which
is decisive in case of emergency, not only
with regard to the avoidance of fire loads,
but also because no vapours or dangerous
flue gases are developing even in case of
extreme heat. On the other hand, large
formats with edge lengths of up to 90
cm permit the realisation of generous,
elegant and representative architectural
concepts, which are completely different
from the purely functional school buildings
of earlier times with their typical smell of
floor wax.
For window sills and stair front edges,
AGROB BUCHTAL produced one -piece
angle tiles especially for this project.
They look very massive and at the same
time create a pleasant contrast to the rest
of grey-brown ceramic tiles. The result
is an attractive design solution which,
in addition, makes walking on the stairs
safer and more comfortable for persons
with or without visual impairment. At the
choice of the floor covering, one of the
decisive criteria for Hermann Beyer was
“that the irregular texture of tiles of the
series PASADO arouses associations with
natural, earthy materials, however without
imitating the look of natural stones.”
The intentionally neutral, unobtrusive
colouring of the ceramic tiles conveys a
discreet noblesse, which the architect
regards as background for the variety of
colours and diversity brought into the
building by the pupils. He sets well-dosed
accents with non-ceramic wall surfaces,
for example in striking intense red, fresh
pistachio-green or warm shades resembling
terracotta.
Not only special spatial experiences
but also a better ambient air are ensured
by the wall tiles of the series PASADO in
the sanitary rooms: the HT coating durably
baked onto the glaze decomposes air
pollutants such as e.g. formaldehyde or
disagreeable odours typical of these areas
and thus effectively improves the indoor
climate without using chemical products,
equipment or energy. In addition, HT has
an antibacterial effect and is extremely
easy to clean: thanks to the hydrophilic
surface, the cleaning water forms a thin
film. In this way, dirt is infiltrated and
can be removed without great effort, so
that the regular maintenance cleaning is
correspondingly simple. In the outdoor

area, the HT coating of the facade ceramics
ensures a “self-washing“ effect in addition,
which makes every rain shower become
a free and environment-friendly cleaning
process.
The aspects of durability and constant
quality are of particular importance in the
case of the School Centre Rehau - especially
as the modernisation of the entire complex
will not be completely finished before 2020.

A Wooden House with an exotic HI-MACS® Exterior
Architect and builder Volker Wiese has realised his personal home design dream with a Bauhaus
style residence with exterior HI-MACS® cladding that secures privacy from the outside but encloses
a delightful garden with-in a multi-façade, two wing design. For the keen nature lover that Wiese is,
using acrylic stone for the exterior wall cladding was an obvious choice as all the materials used in this
energy efficient structure are sustainable. In selecting HI-MACS® for the facades, Wiese has become a
pioneer in the use of this modern building material for the construction of exterior walls.
I
t is often said that out of adversity comes original
inspiration and success. So it is with the new Wiese
residence in Berlin-Grunewald. Previously Volker Wiese
lived the ideal of many architects with a spacious Bauhaus
home with a 3,000 square metre garden. However the local
building authority issued permission for the construction
of a 90 metre long, five storey tall row of buildings across
the road and Wiese’s carefully nurtured paradise created by
the gardening enthusiast over many years was destroyed
by the shadow of the buildings and row of balconies facing
his garden.
Wiese settled on the site for his new project in the
fashionable but urban area of Berlin-Grunewald where he
demolished a run-down post war building in a quiet cul-desac and went about designing his new two wing home that
secured his privacy from the outside with symmetrically
arranged HI-MACS® panels, while forming an intimate

and sheltered courtyard on the inside, with
exciting planes and offset facades mixed with
large windows. From the green terraces and
Japanese gardens of the first floor the view
over the courtyard with a large pond at the
centre and only a glass panel separating the
swimming area from the koi carp pond.
As the connection between nature
and living was also an important aspect
in the architect’s choice of material for
structural components, he chose exclusively
ecologically sustainable high- qualit y
products such as HI-MACS®. The architectural
company Kaden Klingbeil implemented
Volker Wiese’s design as a wood-frame
construction with solid wood ceilings.
However, they did not want the benefits of
the timber construction to be too obvious, so
they opted for a ventilated rainscreen facade.
The façade panels were mounted by the
façade construction company Kiebitzberg
using aluminium structures made by BMW
Montagetechnik. The HI-MACS® FR elements
(in Alpine White), which is specifically
designed for external use, were fixed onto
the structures with KEIL inserts invisible
from the outside. The mineral material
is composed of 70 percent natural stone
powder, 25 percent high quality acrylic resin,
5 percent natural pigments, and is extremely
wear-resistant and durable.
Tom Klingbeil is fascinated with HIMACS®. “The supporting, space-enclosing,
insulating and moisture-regulating external
wa l l d e m o n s t rate s exce l l ent thermal
properties. For example, in combination with
external cellulose insulation, this timberframe construction reduces the use of energy
to just 70 percent of the energy used in a
reference object as per EnEV 2009.” The windproof and breathable external shell makes
damp proofing completely unnecessary. The
interior formaldehyde-free glued laminated
OSB-4 panel, also serving as a cross-brace,
is just a vapour barrier. The external timber
panel is finished by a cement-bound fibrereinforced plasterboard.
Its versatility has led to the HI-MACS®
solid surface material becoming established
as an ecologically sound high-quality product
in the world of architecture and design. It can
also be used in the construction of façades
and opens up new options to architects and

façade construction companies in terms
of design, functionality and aesthetics. Its
natural property of adapting to temperature
fluctuations makes HI-MACS® the perfect
material for 3-dimensionally shaped façade
elements such as the embrasures of the
Wiese residence. In regard to fire resistance,
HI-MACS®-S728 in Alpine White received a
fire rating of B-s1-d0 (as per EN-13501-1) in
the SBI test (Single-Burning-Item), beating
all other mineral-based materials. Four other
colours in the HI-MACS® façade range also
achieved great results in regard to fire rating.
In addition, twelve more colours included
in the HI-MACS® programme can be used
in nearly any relevant areas due to their B1
rating according to DIN 4102-1.
In his choice of material, Volker Wiese
was mostly impressed with the high quality
of the acrylic stone: “The delicate surface feel
of HI-MACS® was exactly what I was looking
for in terms of quality. HI-MACS® allowed
me to implement my idea of building in a
sustainable way.” Wiese also values the nonporous smooth finish of the mineral material.
“I expect that it will be easy to clean, durable
and weather-proof.” These expectations are
backed up by certified tests carried out on the
HI-MACS® FR series designed for external use.
The products beat all other mineral materials
as well as solid surfaces in the ETA certification
test in terms of UV resistance. Therefore, LG

show.

nce again, the HKTDC Hong
Kong International Building and
Decoration Materials & Hardware
Fair, has proven itself successful! Now in its
eighth edition, the building fair achieved a
record breaking 10,942 visitors to the fair.
The fair featured approximately 153
exhibitors from six countries and regions
such as China mainland, Hong Kong,
Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia and Taiwan
in 2013. The Malaysia Ex ternal Trade
Development Corporation took part in the
fair for the first time.
The fair provided the building industry
an excellent platform of opportunities
to launch new products, contact ready
and potential buyers, take on agents and
distributors, garner brand awareness as well
as educate the market and launch business

Yong An Limited showcased the ISOCOR expanded cork agglomerate at the Hong
Kong International Building and Decoration Materials & Hardware Fair 2013. Yong
An Limited is a distributor of the Portugal-based expanded cork agglomerate
producer ISOCOR, for the Hong Kong and Asian markets since July 2013.
The ISOCOR grouping is made up of expanded cork agglomerate producers
who are strategically located near major cork oak areas and who, since 1966,
have been producing whilst ensuring the ongoing improvement of the product
characteristics and reducing any minor production impacts on the environment.
According to Thomas Chan, Director of Yong An Limited, the expanded cork
agglomerate is one of the most environmentally friendly natural materials as
the product is made from natural carbon oak bark. “The product is 100 percent
natural as it is derived from the cork taken from the bark of the cork oak. It

Xiamen Stone Fair 2013 Facts and
Figures
2013 was a milestone year for Xiamen Stone
Fair. A newly built exhibition centre was put
into use as an overseas hall. The number
of exhibitors and visitors hit a new peak
in the history of the fair. It attracted 2,000
leading suppliers and manufacturers from 54
countries and 130,168 visitors comprising of
25,678 overseas industry professionals from
148 countries.
China Market - Tremendous Potential
Under the challenging economic
environment, China’s total transaction
volume of stone imports and exports in
2012 still managed to grow at a stable
pace. It reached USD 8.06 billion, with an
increase of 5.5 percent over last year. The
importing volume from 101 countries in 2012
reached USD 2.69 billion, 7.2 percent more.
Meanwhile, the exporting volume increased
by 4.7 percent compared to 2011.

world’s largest stone trading centre, with its
transaction volume representing over 60
percent in China, and 15 percent in the world.

Xiamen is bounded by the largest stone
processing base, with over 1,200 trading
companies and 10,000 stone processing
factories in its neighbouring area.

Moldex Products Inc.
Moldex Products Inc. (MPI) started as a proprietorship business
in 1967. The company’s initial operations involved processing of
materials into pellets, sold to downstream plastic manufacturers.
After a few years, the business expanded to the production of plastic
seals and PVC bottle compounds. Moldex PVC compounds was used
as raw material to produce clear and transparent plastic bottles for
hair care products and toiletries.
On 17 March 1972, the proprietorship business was incorporated
and registered with SEC. PVC film was introduced as a new product
line. A large pharmaceutical company made use of the PVC film as
material for blister packing of its various products. Subsequently,
other local pharmaceutial companies followed suit, making Moldex
the principal supplier of PVC film to the industry.
In early 1979, MPI diversified into the manufacture of high
density polyethylene (HDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) pipes &
fittings and polybutylene (PB) pipes. Much later, other product lines
were introduced. These included corrugated electrical and telecom
conduits as well as branded sanitary sewer pipes and fittings, with
patented design and features such as gasket seal on traps and built-
in slope on bends. These Moldex products were used in various
industrial, commercial, and residential applications.
MPI’s principal offices are located in 9-storey building along West
Avenue, Quezon City. The MPI manufacturing facilities are located
in 20 hectare compound in Marilao, Bulacan. The tranfer from its
previous 3.3 hectare plant in Valenzuela City was completed in 1996
following the implementation of MPI’s expansion and modernization
program for its HDPE and PVC-U pipes and PVC film businesses.
The Moldex plant provides world class production and
warehouse facilities. The structures were designed together with
U.S. Based engineers to withstand typhoons, minimize entry of
dust, reduce temperature in the work areas, and safely raw materials
and finished goods. In keeping with its tradition of leadership and
commitment to excellence, Moldex is the first PVC Pipes Company
to be awarded and certified with ISO 9002:2004 and the first
company in the pipes industry to be granted the ISO 9001:2008

The variable light transmission
tinting requires only that the glass be
heated by direct sunlight; there are no
wires, electrodes, power supplies, or
control apparatus required. VariShield
is a completely sunlight activated system.
This means that VariShield is so purposely designed so that we can rely less on continuous artificial lighting for indoor illumination
and load less on our air-conditioning system to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
In addition, VariShield incorporates the same PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) base material used in laminated safety glass. The PVB interlayer
holds the glass in place when the glass breaks, providing enhanced safety and security for the end-user.
VariShield which allows approximately 50 percent transmission of visible light on cloudy days, at night or even early in the morning,
will continuously change the transmission in full sunlight to potentially 10 percent or less, depending on the sunlight angle and intensity.
This reduced transmission also reduces the sunlight glare, heat and ultraviolet ray. It offers people a better environment to live, work &
study in throughout the day.

created in collaboration with internationally renowned
designer, Marc Newson. A world first in architectural

I ncorporating Newson’s signature tessellated
hexagonal pattern, the new Stormtech 65MND Series
grates are beautifully constructed from 2mm marine
grade stainless steel, available in satin stainless steel,
satin black, white, pearl brass and blue finishes. The
colours create a subtle accent, which can blend or
contrast with surrounding materials and fittings, such
as tiles and tapware, while also adding texture with the
grate pattern.
Linear drain design was invented by Stormtech to
allow for a wider range of floor surfaces and flooring
configurations than is possible with traditional centre
wastes. The product creates a sleek partition between
the dry and wet areas of a bathroom, to suit contemporary interior design. The 316 marine grade stainless steel grate provides the
durability to extend application to both indoor and outdoor areas.
In May 2013, the Marc Newson designed grate was acknowledged at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New

Hycrete’s hydrophobic concrete admixtures start life as water-soluble, environmentally friendly,
Cradle-To-Cradle Gold™ certified materials. Hycrete meets the criteria for both PRAH (permeabilityreducing admixtures – hydrostatic conditions) and PRAN (permeability-reducing admixtures – nonhydrostatic conditions).
Easily dosed into concrete, Hycrete combines with metallic ions supplied by the cement to
form water-insoluble polymers, thus increasing concrete durability. Those polymers act in two ways:
1. Hydrophobic Pore Blocking. The polymers in Hycrete admixtures block pores in the concrete.
The absorption of water in the concrete is dramatically reduced. Water and absorbed salts stay out
of the concrete.
2. Corrosion Inhibition. Ionic in nature, the molecules in Hycrete admixtures also bind to the surface
of any steel reinforcement in the concrete, forming passivating layers and minimising rebar corrosion.
Hycrete admixtures also prevent diffusion of ions through water that does absorb into the concrete,
providing an extra layer of defense against corrosive agents, thus giving superior rebar protection.

has formulated an impervious, highly elastic and durable waterproofing membrane
which cures within few seconds of installation.
The advantage of rapid curing means it can be applied onto any prepared
substrates having irregular profiles and angles, ensuring consistent thickness
which is a constraint faced by any conventional liquid applied membranes.
The Mapei PURTOP line comprises of three distinct products. Two are hybrids
and one pure polyurea called PURTOP 1000.
PURTOP 1000 is a two component solvent-free polyurea to be applied by a
reactive plural spray machine to form a waterproofing layer as well as protection
lining for hydraulic works, roofs and bridge decks for both new and old structures.

Sound Control and STC
For walls and partitions, sound can be measured through sound transmission loss (STL)
and sound absorption. STL is how effective a barrier can prevent sound from travelling

EQ Dekor is much more than a simple wallpaper. Paired with the creativity of Inkiostro Bianco’s designers and artists – who turn each
wall covering into a little work of art – are structural characteristics that minimise the risk of parts of the walls detaching during earthquakes,
consequently lengthening the evacuation time of buildings. EQ Dekor is based on the innovative patented MapeWrap EQ System, a highperformance product by Mapei with all the requisites for outstanding efficacy in the event of seismic activity.
A bidirectional glass fibre fabric cladding - called MapeWrap EQ Net - applied using a strong holding single component water-based
adhesive – the so-called MapeWrap EQ Adhesive – guarantees excellent performance in the event of an earthquake. Greater stability,
extreme efficacy, extreme lightness and structural flexibility are just some of the benefits that this new Mapei system offers. The simple
use and basic application procedure allowed by the MapeWrap EQ System make EQ Dekor a highly functional product. After spreading an
initial layer of EQ Dekor Adhesive onto the pre-existing plaster, the EQ Dekor fibre cladding can then be applied to prevent the collapse of
the secondary partitions.
Creatively interpreted by Inkiostro Bianco, and decorated with a range of 60 charming graphics and flourishes conceived by eminent
designers and artists who continuously collaborate with the company, the Mapei system has been transformed into the EQ Dekor collection,
an intriguing and eclectic “seismic wallpaper”.
