Michelle Moore It is with loving remembrance that the Regina Optimist Dolphins named our May meet in honour of dedicated swim parent, club volunteer and board member, Michelle Moore. All three of Michelle and Tom’s children swam with the RODS throughout grade school and high school and continued swimming varsity after graduation; Max with the University of Calgary, Taylor with the University of Ottawa, and Quinn with the University of Regina. Michelle’s love for the swimmers and the sport of speed swimming was evident at any competition as she loved to watch the kids race and was certainly not the quietest fan in the crowd. The Moore’s house was a favorite to billet at during ROD meets and was always full to capacity. After working tirelessly to help organize the meet, working throughout the meet, and helping out in hospitality by supplying her famous casserole, Michelle and Tom would go home and happily look after all their billeted guests. Our club was blessed to have such a capable and energetic volunteer, as Michelle worked tirelessly supporting the club wherever and however she could. Her enthusiasm and congeniality won her the respect of many friends, both within the speed swimming community in Regina and abroad. Another passion of Michelle’s was her job as Senior Vice President of operations at Greystone Capital Management. She was one of the originals at the company and cherished her time spent there. Thank you to Greystone Managed Investments Inc., for helping the RODS keep Michelle’s memory and passions alive by generously supporting the club and all speed swimmers attending this meet in her namesake. President’s Message I would like to welcome all the swimmers, coaches, families, and volunteers to our 4th Annual Michelle Moore Meet. This year the meet will be extra exciting as swimmers will be racing from morning till night, as we are running a developmental meet for the younger swimmers between prelims and finals. I would like to thank all the volunteers who have selflessly given up their time to officiate and help out at our meet. With your help, we continue the RODS tradition of hosting amazing meets! We greatly appreciate your time and effort. As well I want to extend a huge thank-you to our Meet managers Lee Dean and Andrea Axelson as well as our officials’ coordinator, Laura Ambrose. I know you have spent countless hours gathering officials and organizing this meet which is often a thankless job. Your time, effort, and hard work are very much appreciated. Thank you also to all our sponsors who generously support our club! Good luck to all the swimmers and enjoy the meet! Betty Lou Dean High Performance Program Road to Excellence Initiative 2015-2020 The Regina Optimist Dolphin Swim Club is pleased to announce the Betty Lou Dean High Performance Program. Seed funding for the program has been provided by the Dean family as a continuing legacy to Betty Lou Dean and her desire and commitment to the development of swimming in Saskatchewan. Betty Lou Dean was involved with aquatics for over 60 years, as an athlete, coach, official, builder and administrator. Betty was the mother of 4 sons who also swam. Betty was extremely successful as an athlete, both as a diver and a swimmer. As a swimmer she achieved 253 first place finishes and established numerous provincial records. In 1948 she won a Bronze Medal at Olympic Trials. In 1949 she held the Canadian Record for the Senior Women’s 100 Back and was a Silver Medalist at the 1950 Commonwealth Games Trials. She was both coach and athlete during her senior high school years and a role model for the younger swimmers. She coached the Regina Y Splashers from 1947 to 1950 and at the same time was also the Head Coach of the Balfour High School Swim Team. Betty then went on to serve as Head Coach for two Regina swim teams: the YMCA Synchronettes from 1953 to 1959 and the Regina YMCA/YWCA Amateur Swim Club from 1960 to 1967. She was instrumental in the development of a competitive swim team through the YM/YWCA, which later became the Regina Optimist Dolphin Swim Club and in 1965 was named the Lions Club Sportswoman of the Year for being instrumental in the development of the club. Betty Lou then went on to be the Head Coach of the swim team in Corner Brook Newfoundland from 1968 to 1973 and then as an Assistant Coach with the Regina Optimist Dolphins in 1973 and 1974. During this time Betty Lou also became a Swimming Official and in 1975 became a Master Official and officiated at many National Competitions including the 1975 Western Canada Games, 1976 Canada Cup, 1977 Division II Nationals and 1978 Commonwealth Games Trials. In 1957 she was the Founding President of the Saskatchewan Amateur Synchronized Swimming Association, and in 1975 become the first Executive Director of Swim Sask; a position she held until her retirement 23 years later in 1998. Betty Lou was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 1991 as a th Builder. In 1992 she received a Commemorative Medal for the 125 Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, in 2002 she was awarded the Regina YWCA’s Woman of Distinction Award and in 2003 received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal; all for her contributions to the sport of swimming. Betty Lou was an amazing and vibrant woman, who was very, very passionate about swimming and her 4 sons. She was strong willed but had a zest for life and loved to laugh. The Betty Lou Dean High Performance Program will provide high-level competition and training opportunities for Regina’s elite swimmers. The inception and guiding strategy of this program further enhances the commitment to help talented, hard working Saskatchewan based swimmers reach the podium both nationally and internationally. Thank you to the Dean family for their generous support and ongoing commitment to the development of Saskatchewan swimmers.
