Come Discover Today’s Living on
the Ridge - And, Our Rich History
The Bear’s Den Rural Historic District has long
attracted vacationers with its dramatic mountain
top views that overlook the Shenandoah River Valley
to the west and the Virginia Piedmont to the east.
These remarkable views combined with the cooler
microclimate of the mountain drew many within high-level government and diplomatic circles in the
nation’s capital over the past century. For those
fleeing the hot and humid summers of Washington
this area has offered privacy and solitude in a
breathtaking natural setting.
The Blue Ridge Mountain Home Tour encompasses
a remarkable collection of sophisticated vacation
homes, many of which are constructed of stone, in a
region noted for its early American history. Many of
the area homes were built from the unique Catoctin
Greenstone available on the Blue Ridge. Beautiful
custom iron gates mark the boundaries of these
secluded properties never before open to the public.
