Dedicated to Our VCS Family
Valdosta City School Nurses –
The Best in Town!
Former Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders said,
“You cannot educate a child who is not healthy, and
you cannot keep a child healthy who is not educated."
Interdependence has helped to bridge the gap between
educators and nurses, and Elders’ statement is a prime
example of the relationship between the Valdosta City
School Nurses and the staff with whom they work.
All Valdosta City School System schools have
been fortunate to have full-time nurses this year for
the first time since the program started seven years
ago. Originally, each nurse traveled between two
schools and worked a half day at each school. This
was not a perfect situation, as it was not a certainty
when a child would become ill or injured. As funding
became available, more nurses were hired;
consequently, all of our students and staff have access
to healthcare in each school – all day every day.
Over the years, the faculty and staff have become
more dependent on the School Nurses and often times
rely on the nurse’s expertise for personal and family
issues. School Nurses are available to check blood
pressures, run weight-loss competitions, schedule
speakers, check blood sugars, and field questions
about new symptoms or newly-prescribed medicine
for the faculty and staff of their respective schools.
On one occasion, a nurse even helped diagnose a
blood clot in the leg of one of the VCS maintenance
staff employees.
The list of tasks and responsibilities the School
Nurses perform for the children is endless. The
nurses care for many children with chronic illnesses,
as well as take care of emergency situations. Societal
changes have impacted schools tremendously, and
children today come to school needier and sicker than
they did in the past.
School Nurses have become more confident in
their role and function independently without the
benefit of a medical team for support. Not unlike a
teacher, the nurses also have to make daily decisions
based solely on their knowledge and experience. It is
a great benefit and a huge opportunity to have a
healthcare professional on each VCS campus – the
presence of the School Nurse has helped solve many
medical issues, both for the students and faculty.
No School Nurse goes out in public without being
on unofficial duty, for their "patients" are everywhere.
Little ones shout out to the world in Wal-Mart, "Look,
Mommy – there’s my nurse!" or better yet,
“Remember me? I came to see you when I threw up
in Mrs. Corbett’s class that day!” As any School
Nurse will say, school nursing is different from all of
the other specialties – but, even on a bad day, it is the
best job in town.

Karen Mathena (SM)
Karen S. Mathena (better
known to us as Karen Campbell)
has 21 years in education – all of
those years were at Sallas-Mahone
Elementary School.
Karen has earned three
degrees from Valdosta State
University – Bachelor of Science
in Early Childhood Education
(1985), Master of Education in
Early Childhood Education
(1988), and Education Specialist in Early Childhood
Education (1990). She was named a National Board
Certified Teacher (Generalist/Early Childhood) in 2005.
She is currently taking a second semester of American
Sign Language and plans to complete her ESOL
certification in July.
Karen has collaborated with VSU by serving as a
mentor, practicum and student teacher supervisor for
undergraduate early childhood and foreign language
programs, piloting the first student/teacher program for
the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, and
serving as a guest lecturer for undergraduate foreign
language education and speech/language programs. At
SM, Karen has developed and presented workshops for
parents, participated in various committees (Reading &
Science Textbook Adoption, School Accreditation, InTech,
Accelerated Reading, Leadership Team, Yearbook, IEP,
and SST). She also implemented a buddy reading
program with first and third graders.
Karen’s family includes her father Ken Mathena
(Tifton), her mother and stepfather Jane & Al Blevins
(Marion, VA), brother & sister-in law Steven and Tammy
Mathena, a nephew Matthew Mathena, and a niece Sarah
Mathena.
Karen’s hobbies and interests include calligraphy,
tennis, horseback riding, bridge, matting/framing artwork,
reading, domestic and international travel, and dancing
(ballet, tap, jazz).
After leaving Valdosta City Schools, Karen will move
to Switzerland to teach at the International School of Zug.
This school is comprised of students in grades PreK-8,
and it has 500 students (40 different nationalities).
Karen’s new home and school are located between Zurich
and Luzern.
Karen will miss her SM and VCS families, but she is
moving ahead to a lifelong dream – and she will be
greatly missed by all who know her. In Karen’s
Curriculum Vitae, she states the following: “I consider
myself more than simply an imparter of knowledge, for I

audience. My goal is to actively engage my students in

the learning process, to nurture and guide them in
becoming effective learners, and to empower them as
confident individuals who possess the necessary skills
which will serve them well in their present and future
endeavors.” Those who know Karen can certainly attest
to this statement.
Karen submitted two of her favorite quotes that she
developed and uses with her students:
“Don’t learn these skills just for today or a test on Friday.
Learn them for the rest of your life.”
&
“Stay afloat in the positive boat – don’t dive into the sea
of negativity!”

• The students of Cisco Diaz’s (VMS – 7th science)
classes are participating in the making of compost
through decomposition. Cisco received a grant from the
Valdosta Junior Service League that provided his four
science classes with two compost bins. Since
decomposers serve as an important factor in our
ecosystem and are a major theme in his “Interactions
between Organisms” unit, Cisco felt a hands-on approach
would help his students understand and master the entire
breakdown process of material through decomposition.
Students collected food scraps (banana peels, orange
peels, lettuce, apple cores, etc.) from lunch, along with
grass clippings and dead leaves to contribute to the
compost bin. Students observed that factors such as
temperature, humidity, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon all
play important roles in the decomposition process.
Students were also reminded on a daily basis this process
could not be possible without the help of actual
decomposing organisms such as fungi and bacteria. The
speed with which decomposition occurs varies greatly,
and Cisco is hoping his students will see the final result
by the end of this school year. His students are very
excited to be part of this experiment and are anxious
about the results. Cisco’s goal is to purchase two more
compost bins next year so that each class can participate
in their own making of compost. The students from
Ashley Cody’s (VMS – 7th science), another recipient of
the Valdosta Junior Service League grant, and Chris
Washington’s (VMS – 7th science) classes are also
participating in a similar decomposition experiment using
two-liter bottles. The students from these classes
created their own mini compost bins.

VMS Superior Bands
Gary Bradley and Travis Downs, directors of the
Valdosta Middle School Bands, report that the VMS 8th
Grade Symphonic Band participated in several Concert
Band Camps throughout this Spring Semester. These
students participated in Master Classes, conducted by
students in VSU Music Organizations Kappa Kappa Psi,
Tau Beta Sigma, and the Collegiate Music Educators
National Conference (CMENC). They also had several
2-hour rehearsals directed by Eric Bradshaw (VSU –
Assistant Director of Bands), Dr. Joe Brashier (VSU –
Director of Bands), and Craig Bean (Worth Co. Middle
School Band Director). Each of these clinicians
demonstrated different interpretations of the musical
selections. These rehearsals helped the Band make as
many improvements as possible prior to the GMEA’s
Large Group Performance Evaluation in Waycross on
March 9. The hard work and dedication of the students,
directors, and clinicians paid off when the band was
awarded Superior Ratings.
Gary and Travis announced both theVMS 7th and 8th
Grade Bands received Superior ratings during the 70th
Annual Performance Evaluation Festival. Gary and
Travis said the Band’s performance and ratings continue
an outstanding tradition of participation and success at the
Georgia Music Educators Association Festival. A
Superior rating denotes an outstanding performance being
recognized as among the very best. The GMEA Large
Group Performance Evaluation program is an evaluation
procedure of performing groups, teachers, as well as each
school’s total music program. Gary and Travis have built
the VMS Band into a force of hundreds of students who
consistently earn Superior ratings in various performances
and competitions.
The Valdosta Middle School Band Program competed
in the All Star Music Festival in Orlando, FL on
March 23-25. There were many top notch middle school
bands from around the southeast in attendance. The 7th
Grade Band took first place in the AA Classification class;
and the 8th Grade Band made Straight Superior ratings,
taking 2nd place in the AAA Classification. The VMS
Jazz Band also took first place in the Jazz Ensemble
Category. All of the band members, staff, and chaperones
enjoyed two days at Universal Studios and Islands of
Adventure Theme Parks and also had a chance to visit
“Old Town,”
an entertainment attraction with shopping, dining, games
and rides.

The Valdosta Middle School girl's and boy's tennis teams traveled to
Tifton on March 24 to participate in the Middle School Regional
Tournament that included teams from: Valdosta, Lowndes, Hahira,
Colquitt, Coffee – a round robin format. Because of a scheduling
conflict and an illness, VMS lost two of their female players prior to
the tournament. The girl’s team was still able to remain undefeated
and take home the 1st place trophy. Singles players Leslie Brandon,
Carly Cangelosi, and Leigh Ellis, as well as doubles partners Caitlyn
Rowe and Katie Beth Veal, defeated every opponent during each of
their 5 matches. The girl’s team was also undefeated throughout their
regular season. The VMS boy's team finished 3rd in the tournament.
A big thanks goes to Coach Cisco Diaz (VMS – 7th science) and
Coach Jenne Brandon (WGN – School Nurse) for doing such a
wonderful job with the VMS tennis teams!

water comes from and how it is prepared and cleaned.
For the 4th consecutive year, the Valdosta City Schools' Middle School
wrestling program manhandled the field! Under the direction of
Coach Keith McConnehead (VMS – PE), the VMS and NMS wrestling
team members enjoyed an undefeated season and earned the title of
