As I write the weather has finally turned to something that resembles a proper Spring, and so our thoughts are turning, as they always do at this time of year, to keeping our four-legged friends safe in the sun. At our centres we have plenty of ideas to help the animals cope with the changing temperatures – paddling pools for our dogs is just one! – please call us or visit us at www.woodgreen.org.uk/pet-advice for advice on keeping your pet safe and happy in warmer weather. It’s also that time when you might be planning a summer getaway – Helen Currie wouldn’t dream of going away without her dog Misty, and offers advice on page 10 for anyone who’s hoping to do the same this year. We always enjoy receiving your photos and news of what your pets have been up to, and now we’re offering one lucky reader the chance to see their pet appear on the cover of our next issue – please turn to page 15 for details of how to enter our photography competition! You will also notice as you look through the magazine that our Christmas cards are now available – yes, it may seem a long way off but we’re already half way through the year! – all profits from the sale of cards will go towards the animals in our care. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your generous support, without it we simply wouldn’t be able to keep our doors open. Please do come and visit us if you can, so you can see first-hand the difference your contribution makes. Wood Green | The Animals Charity 17 Why rescue It is so easy to acquire a new pet nowadays and we are often asked why people would want to go through the process of adoption – Wood Green’s Head of Training and Behaviour Sue Ketland explains why rescue dogs are best and talks about the Charity’s rehoming process. Why breed or buy whilst rescue dogs die? This is the mantra at the other end of the scale we deal with people who have that is held close to the hearts of all those working in rehoming hearts of gold whose support we couldn’t do without, and charities. We choose to work in this industry owing to our everything in-between. We never know from one day to the next love of man’s best friend. Rescue work does not pay well; we whether our hearts are going to be broken or if we are going to work long hours, including weekends and Bank holidays. We burst with joy, but we do our job and we do it with pride. are always full and the staff are constantly working flat out to ensure all our animals receive the best care possible. The In the past the media have printed stories about how difficult working environment is extremely emotional, at one end of the some people find the ‘adoption’ process. Not all charities scale we deal with the worst cases of abuse imaginable and operate in the same way. Some will only ‘rehome’ dogs within a certain radius of their shelter, others put a mandatory child If we wait until the ‘perfect’ home comes along our four legged friends could be waiting a very long time. 18 www.woodgreen.org.uk | Donation Hotline 0844 875 0150 age restriction on all their dogs, some won’t place a dog with at the appropriate age they are all neutered, we microchip owners who are out at work during the day and so the list goes all our dogs and every owner is provided with a month’s free on. These varying rules and procedures are made with the very health insurance. We aim to support new owners in their best of intentions; after all, shelter kennels would not be full if choice of dog or puppy by pointing out the pros and cons of every dog owner was as dedicated to their four legged friends those on their shortlist. We also offer support and advice for as our hearts would like them to be. the entire life of every animal that we place into society. Where else That brings us to ‘heart would someone get this level of versus head’. If our hearts care and value for money? ruled the world it would be a lovely place, but would much Yes we provide ‘hoops’ for people get done? We all dream of to jump through but they are there a perfect world, but perfect it for a reason; we need to be sure isn’t. Perfection is subjective, that our dogs are going into homes what one person cherishes, that fully understand what they another hates, life would be are taking on. We, on the other boring otherwise. What we hand, also understand that every can aim for is moderation home is different, every person’s or adequacy. This should be experience is different, and every remembered when working person cares in a different way. In order to do our job to the in animal welfare. If we wait until the ‘perfect’ home comes best of our ability we at Wood Green treat everyone who comes along our four legged friends could be waiting a very long time. to us in search of a new friend as an individual. We have our If, however, we look for homes that will provide food, water, guidelines, but that’s just what they are, guidelines, they can be shelter, medical care, exercise and love, in other words an bent and tweaked as we see fit. Our goal is to find good caring ‘adequate’ home, our canine friends would find a homely couch homes for our animals, we live in the real world and home our in no time at all. animals to REAL people. At Wood Green, The Animals Charity our staff are trained to find homes for dogs that meet their basic needs plus a little more. We realised a long time ago that there aren’t enough homes out there with acres of land, live in trainers, owners that are home all day, owners that don’t have any young children or owners that are really looking forward to rehabilitating a troubled rescue dog. We have a real duty of care to the previous owners of the dogs that are entrusted to us. Many of them have handed their treasured pets to us so that we can ensure their safety for the rest of their lives. We take this responsibility very seriously and in no way would we consider placing the dogs in our care into homes that cannot provide for their basic needs both financially and emotionally. There are many different options available to people who are looking to get a new dog or puppy: there are breeders, newspapers, shop windows and now the internet. There is an ever growing number of websites that encourage the sale and purchase of pets online. If you are a genuine responsible owner ask yourself why you might prefer these options. A reputable animal charity such as Wood Green wants to protect potential new owners as much as the animals in their care when it comes to finding good homes. With this in mind we (along with other charities) ensure that all our animals undergo a thorough medical examination, they are all vaccinated and provided with treatment for worms and fleas, Wood Green | The Animals Charity 19 day life... in the A ...some (dogs) blatantly pose for it, with an occasional one being camera shy. It’s like being paparazzi for the animal world! Martin Hill Volunteer Photographer I first started working as a volunteer photographer and videographer at Wood Green’s Godmanchester Centre in September 2012. The drive to Wood Green always involves the regular stop for coffee, like our lab I have a routine... 20 www.woodgreen.org.uk | Donation Hotline 0844 875 0150 ers are rm te g n lo r o ty ri o ri p h Hig g them filmed first as promotin lp in e h lly a re n a c y a w is th in s. finding them new home 10:30 Arriving at Wood Green, I always see how many cars are in the car park. This gives me an idea of how busy the site will be. Then it’s off to the dog section to sign in and locate the list for today’s film and photos. Next stop is to locate the dogs along with a volunteer to walk them; in the beginning this was a great way to clear a room! Today and over the months of working here, the staff have really got to grips with starring in the clips. Regular walkers (referred to as “The Legs” since that’s all that’s usually seen!) have helped to make the work easier by getting used to the format and what’s required when taking pictures. 14:00 11:00 The filming takes place around the Godmanchester site in It’s great to see the reaction of the dogs as they get excited for a walk; most are oblivious to the camera, some inquisitive, some blatantly pose for it, with an occasional one being camera shy. It’s like being paparazzi for the animal world! We try to keep to a similar format with all the film clips; going on walks, doing tricks and playing in the garden, although some dogs don’t want to play, standing with a “You threw it, you get it!” look in their eyes. various areas, but we can usually be found around the lake area as this make a great background for the photos, along with the more peaceful garden of remembrance when the site is busy, which helps the timid dogs to relax for the photos. I usually aim to film around 8-10 minutes of film, which allows for a good selection when editing, along with 4-5 various photos. Schmackos are the key here, along with a squeaker from an old dog chew! (Thank you Buddy) 15:30 Upon arrival at home, our trusty Buddy performs his search and stop routine, consisting of “Where have you been, who with and where are the Schmackos” nudge to the pockets! High priority or long termers are filmed first as promoting them in this way can really help in finding them new homes. 20:00 Downloading the afternoon’s photos and film clips are a job for the evening, with a quick sort out of the photos for clarity and composition. Small tweaks are made to ensure the picture looks its best. Depending on home life and how busy I am with my 13:30 main job, I aim to produce and upload on YouTube a film and relevant photos each night. Lunch time!
