Dear PE Co-ordinator
re: School Club Links Programme
The School Club Links programme is a fundamental part of the Government’s National
School Sports Strategy. Its purpose is to strengthen the links between schools and local
sports clubs and, in so doing, increase the number of children and young people who
become members of high quality clubs. Hopefully, by creating effective school club links, it
will lead to young people adopting a healthier lifestyle, enjoying sport and encouraging
life long participation.
A School Club Link is an agreement between a school and a community based sports club
to work together to:
• Meet the needs of young people
• Provide new and varied opportunities for young people
• Help young people to realise their ambitions
• Agree good standards of provision.
The agreement works on a three tiered system which clearly identifies which level your
club link is currently operating and highlights shared responsibility. The agreement will
also assist in the collection, monitoring and reporting of PESSYP targets. Only sports clubs
with Clubmark / Knowsley Clubmark status or working towards this accreditation will form
links with schools, this demonstrates that the sport club is high quality through
accreditation from their relevant National Governing Body of sport.
This will ensure that children and young people will be participating in clubs which are
deemed safe, child friendly and will consist of high quality fully qualified coaches.
Sports clubs which meet the necessary standards which are local to the school will be
prioritised when forming school-club links to ensure that barriers such as transport cost to
children are at a minimal.
The enclosed documents outline the school club link agreement which has been
developed by Knowsley Sports Development in consultation with Governing Bodies of
Sport and School Sport Partnerships. It provides a full explanation of the benefits of
formalised school club links and the minimum operating standards for certification.
Also enclosed is a comprehensive Club Directory featuring all the Sport Clubs in Knowsley
with relevant contact details and if the club is accredited with either Clubmark or Knowsley
Clubmark status, this will support your school in establishing high quality links with local
clubs.
You will be provided with a certificate of recognition upon completion of this school-club
link agreement, and the club will keep a register of new members which will be passed
onto the school to ensure monitoring and evaluation of the link.
For further information please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind Regards

Background
In partnership with National Governing Bodies of Sport, School Sport Partnerships and
Merseyside Sports Partnership, Knowsley Sports Development has developed a
recognition programme for school club links, enabling clubs and schools to formalise the
excellent work they are already doing and supporting them to develop further opportunities.
Benefits
Each school club link will be different; as a result each individual link will provide the
schools and clubs involved with numerous individual benefits. Listed below are some
benefits that clubs and schools can expect to derive from developing a formalised

At each level (1-3) the club and school will be required to adhere to the Minimum
Operating Standards (basic requirements) to be awarded the Knowsley Sports
Development School Club Links certification. Clubs with Clubmark / Knowsley Clubmark
or working toward this standard will only be used to ensure high quality.
At all levels, schools and clubs may wish to add additional elements from the examples of
opportunities listed below (this is not an exhaustive list, be creative):
Festival at club, club use of school facilities, school use of club facilities, develop interschool
competition, offering transport, invitations to club competitions, volunteer opportunities.
Certification
A copy of the Agreement will be sent to the relevant NGB Regional Officer and Merseyside
Sports Partnership.
Both the school and the club will be sent a certificate upon completion of the School-Club
Link Agreement. In addition, the club will keep a register of new members which can be
passed onto the school at the agreed review date to ensure monitoring of the link.
A certificate for each link will be awarded to the school and the club.

What is Clubmark?
Clubmark is the Sport England cross sport quality accreditation for clubs with a junior
section. National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) accredit clubs that comply with
minimum operating standards in four areas:
• The playing and participation programme.
• Duty of care and child protection.
• Sports equity and ethics
• Club management
Clubmark demonstrates to partners, parents and young people that Clubmark accredited
club are:
• Active - Getting the best out of young people.
• Accessible - Giving everyone a sporting chance.
• Accredited - The Sport England mark of high quality.
What Knowsley Clubmark is?
Knowsley Sports Development Service validates clubs that do not have a National
Governing Body of Sport (NGB’s) “Clubmark” accreditation scheme but comply with
the minimum operating standards required. This accreditation recognises the
development and commitment of clubs that are deemed safe, effective and child friendly.
NGB’s that do not accredit clubs with “Clubmark” status include Baseball, Martial Arts and
other minority sports.
