Every shoe company now has many different ways to say they have different technology, levels of support, cushioning, heel drop and stack heights throughout the shoe. I can't help including some of this terminology in my shoe guide because I find it rather complex, or confusing, and a little humorous. They often have different in house terminology for the same things. Heel drop Heel drop in millimeters is the difference between heel (RF) thickness to toe (FF) thickness. Can be between 0mm and 12mm. Heel drop synonyms – heel-toe-drop, heel-toe-differential, heel-toe-lift, heel-toeoffset, ramp angle. The more “drop” means your heel is more raised. Thus, a 15mm heel and an 11mm forefoot sole measurement is a 4mm drop. However, a 9-mm heel and a 5mm forefoot is also a 4mm drop. And of course a 4, 11 or even 15mm reading in BOTH heel and forefoot would then be “zero drop.” The thing to remember is that zero drop does not mean zero cushioning or flat on the ground and thus “barefoot,” since you can have some cushioning layer running the full length of the shoe while maintaining a 0mm difference. Possible heel drop values Normal / traditional 8 / 10 - 12mm Middle ground 6 - 8mm Minimalist 0 – 4mm Stack heights Stack height is the thickness measurement under the RF and FF of the shoe. This can be expressed as how much material (midsole material) is between the bottom of your foot and the ground. Often, two different stack heights are described: heel (RF) and forefoot (FF) stack height. As the product arena in the barefoot/minimal segment has expanded, one can find everything from zero drop to pretty significant drop with all kinds of stack. You can easily find 15-22mm stacks underfoot that are still zero drop (what has been traditional shoes are often 20-25mm underfoot, while of course racing flats and cross-country spikes were the minimal shoes of yesteryear). New unusual stack heights / design - New on the market are a few models from Skechers that actually are said to promote the midfoot strike due to a slightly higher stack in the midfoot (for example, 15mm in the heel, with 18mm in the midfoot and 11mm in the forefoot). 8 THE TECHNICAL RUNNING SHOE GUIDE By Dennis Rehbock, Sports Podiatrist NEW RUNNING SHOE TERMINOLOGY Possible stack height values Maximalist running shoes RF 25-30-35mm FF 18-24-35-38mm Roger 32 up Traditional / normal running shoes RF 20-24mm FF 10-12mm Minimalist running shoes RF 8-12mm FF 4-6mm Maximalist running shoes The latest evolution of the running shoe industry is what is called maximalism or maximalist. These shoes are typically highly cushioned. But other than that one similarity, it’s hard to lump all highly cushioned shoes into this category. This category of high cushion or “maximalist” running shoes appears ready to explode with almost some brands offering at least one model with oversized cushioning. Hoka One One, started as a niche brand within the trail ultra running community, and has expanded its line to include road shoes as well. They seems to be the market leader in the USA. Other companies producing maximalist running shoes are Brooks, Skechers, Puma, Pearl Izumi, Vasque, New Balance, ASICS and Altra. Some of these brands are not known in SA. In South Africa we await to see what maximalist brands and models we will get. Example - The Hoka Conquest - RF34-FF28-HD6mm The Hoka are typically considered a maximalist shoe, but they have a low drop, but a high stack. 9 THE TECHNICAL RUNNING SHOE GUIDE By Dennis Rehbock, Sports Podiatrist NEW RUNNING SHOE TERMINOLOGY Are maximalist shoes the opposite of minimalist shoes? Yes and no. Certainly the high-off-the-ground concept is the antithesis of what the low-to-the-ground sensation of what barely-there minimalist shoes are all about. However, maximalist shoes weren’t designed with a “more-is-more” design motif. Actually, many maximalist shoes have taken a lot from modern minimalist designs—using materials that are as light as possible, avoiding excess materials and incorporating low to moderate heel-toe offsets (anywhere from 0 to 8mm). Reference - http://running.competitor.com/2014/05/shoes-and-gear/sole-man-12-thingsabout-maximalist-shoes_94938#CJxC4mJ1id3QKQLD.99 Barefoot Without shoes. Running without any form of shoes. Barefoot seems to have come to mean little or nothing under foot (up to about 4mm) while maintaining zero drop, and “minimal” seems to be interpreted as adding a bit more overall drop – perhaps up to 4-6 mm difference from heel to toe – while the stack is still widely debated. Minimalist The characteristics features of a typical minimalist running shoe is lightweight, low or 0mm heel drop, minimal or no cushioning, flexible, wide toe box. Many minimalist running shoes are still available in the SA market. NOTE In this shoe guide the shoe geometry values are expressed as: Rearfoot stack – Forefoot stack – Heel drop in mm. RF mm- FF mm – HD mm. OR Heel – Toe – Heel drop H-T-HDmm Outersole stack – Rearfoot stack (mm) - Forefoot stack (mm). OS-RFmm-FFmm.
