The Mason Gross Performing Arts Center at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, hosts theater, dance

Over 200 years worth of New Brunswick Fire Department history is now housed in the New Brunswick
Firefighter’s Museum located at 81 Remsen Avenue. The museum, located in a firehouse that was once fully
operational, contains antique fire fighting paraphernalia, old box alarms, photographs, films and uniforms.

Rutgers University Geology Museum

The Rutgers University Geology Museum, which is open to the public and pre-scheduled group tours,
features exhibits on geology and anthropology, with an emphasis on the natural history of New Jersey. Call

The Village is a collection of original, replica and reconstructed 18th and 19th century structures. While
most of the buildings have been relocated to the site, others were constructed here. They represent the
vernacular architecture typical of farm and merchant communities, once found in central New Jersey.
Hours of operation are 8:30AM to 4:15PM on Tuesday through Friday and 1:00PM to 4:00PM on Sundays.
Guided Public Tours are available on Tuesdays through Fridays, and at 1:30PM on Sundays. No tours are
available on days when events are scheduled.
Metlar-Bodine House Museum

Severely damaged by fire in 2003, this national and state registered historic site and Piscataway Township’s
Historical and Cultural Museum circa 1728, is still undergoing restoration. Tours are available by

The original campus of Rutgers, the State University of NJ is located throughout New Brunswick and
surrounding area. Serving as the largest of the college’s campuses, visitors to the campus can see historical
landmarks and buildings including the university’s first building, Old Queens, Kirkpatrick Chapel and
Voorhees Chapel. The general public can take advantage of the Serin Astronomical Observatory, Rutgers
Gardens, the Rutgers University Geology Museum, Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum and many other
sites of interest.

You could spend hours taking in all the beautiful blooms at Rutgers Gardens. The 50-acre lush site includes
gardens such as the Donald B. Lacey display, the Roy H. De Boer Evergreen, the Ella Quimby Water
Conservation Terrace, the Garden for Sun & Shade, rhododendron, azalea, and tribute gardens. Highlights
include a bamboo forest, an ornamental tree collection, a shade tree collection and the largest collection of
American hollies in the world. Open between 8:30AM to Dusk, all year round.
Monument Square Park
Intersection of George Street & Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ
The Monument was dedicated on November 15, 1893. Erected to honor soldiers and sailors who
participated in the U.S. Civil War. Monument and surrounding park area was refurbished in 2007 and
re-dedicated to all veterans.
Daniel S. Schanck Observatory

As part of Rutgers, the State University of NJ, the observatory was built in 1865 to originally accommodate
the study of astronomy at the Rutgers Scientific School and was modeled after the Tower of the Winds in
Athens, Greece. The two-story structure has a revolving roof and a rear wing connected by a passageway.

Joyce Kilmer House

Alfred Joyce Kilmer, best known for his poem, “Trees”, was born in New Brunswick in 1886. The home was
originally a Dutch farmhouse built in 1780 with additions dating from the 1830’s, is considered one of the
oldest remaining structures in New Brunswick. Hours are available by appointment only.
Elmwood Cemetery Self-Walking Tour

Established in 1868, it was first called Cedar Lawn Cemetery and changed to Elmwood Cemetery in
1873. Many prominent New Brunswick residents chose this cemetery as their final resting place, such as
