What is Moonshine? — A common name for illegally distilled liquor. The term originated in Europe to describe "occupational pursuits that
necessitate night work," and was applied in America to Appalachian home distillers who engaged in illegal distillation and sale of whiskey "by the
light of the moon."
The moonshine was not illegal — not paying the taxes on it was the problem. Nat'l Prohibition Act (1920-1933) banned sale, manufacture, and
transportation of alcohol for consumption nationwide, in accordance with the 18 th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. As a result, drinking may
have actually increased, respect for the law was greatly lessened, and crime increased dramatically. Prohibition became increasingly unpopular during
the Great Depression and was repealed in 1933 by the 21 st Amendment.
What is Bootlegging? — The transport and sale of illegal liquor. The term originated in Colonial America in reference to selling alcohol to Native
Americans. Some colonists tried to prevent the practice, but determined traders concealed bottles of liquor in the tops of their boots and covered them
with their pants legs — hence, the term "bootlegger."
Moonshine Runners — During Prohibition, the law relentlessly pursued "bootleggers" who transported moonshine to eager customers in other
towns and cities. In response, bootleggers in the South began to create their own souped-up "stock-looking" cars with powerful engines and strong
suspensions to improve their chances of outrunning government agents. Thus, the term "Moonshine Runners" was born.
NASCAR — Moonshine Runners' stock cars later became popular recreational racing, as well. The sport made it to Daytona in the late 1930's,
where the cars were driven by admitted moonshiners. Since the first national coverage of Daytona 500 in 1979, NASCAR has become one of the
fastest growing professional sports in the United States.

Liquor by the drink has been available since November 2012. The Pigeon Forge Planning Commission set new rules in place, not allowing
distilleries to open in areas zoned as C-2 tourism commercial districts, which includes all of the Pigeon Forge Parkway.
Appalachian Face Jugs were made to protect mountain folks' moonshine from the kids. Parents would tell the young’uns a story of an ugly
boogeyman hiding in the closet and to never go in there for fearing their safety. If any were ever brave enough to peek, this scary-lookin' jug
would be waiting for them, thus assuring that the white lightn' would always be kept safe.
