O’Malley attended Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. He participated in the renowned Eagle program, serving in tutoring programs and other efforts to provide assistance for the residents in the impoverished neighborhood surrounding the school. O’Malley received his bachelor’s degree from Catholic University and a law degree from the University of Maryland. In 1986, while in law school, he was named by then-Congresswoman Barbara Mikulski as state field director for her successful primary and general election campaigns for the U.S. Senate. From 1987 to 1988 he served as a legislative fellow for Senator Mikulski, where he focused on obtaining federal funding for projects in the State of Maryland. In 1988, O’Malley was appointed assistant state’s attorney for the city of Baltimore. He served on the Baltimore City Council from 1991 to 1999, during which time he was chairman of the Legislative Investigations and Taxation and Finance Committees. In 1999, O’Malley was elected mayor of Baltimore. In 2004, O’Malley was elected to a second term as Mayor of Baltimore receiving 88% of the vote. During his seven years as mayor of Baltimore City, Mayor O’Malley worked with the city’s citizens and public servants to make it a more beautiful, cleaner city where people want to live and businesses want to invest. In 2007, O’Malley was elected Governor of the State of Maryland and in 2009, Governing Magazine named him “Public Official of the Year”. In 2010, he won reelection with 56% of the vote. Governor O’Malley’s policies have helped build America’s #1 ranked public school system, drive violent crime down to a 35 year low, and create jobs for Maryland families. Now in his second term, Governor O’Malley continues to rely on the tenants of transparency, accountability and progress-driven results to make State government work again for the people. Governor O’Malley and his wife Katie, a District Court Judge, have two daughters, Grace and Tara, and two sons William and Jack. They are members of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. 4 CLASS OF 2011 • The Universities at Shady Grove Student Speaker Muhammad Ahmad University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Construction Management Technology Muhammad Ahmad is a senior with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Construction Management Technology program at USG. His family has been very supportive of his academic goals. Through the Kendall Mentoring Program, Muhammad has been inspired by people who care about the community and have shown him the importance of giving back. He continues to volunteer his time and service to Rebuild Baltimore, which helps low income homeowners by providing assistance with home renovation and repair. Currently, Muhammad is interning 40 hours per week with Coakley Williams Construction where he manages schedules, budgets and contracts in the field office. After graduation, Muhammad will transition to full time employment with Coakley Williams in the role of Project Engineer. Muhammad also plans to pursue graduate school next year to complete an MBA.
