Registered Charity www.sivananda.org/toronto The International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres Founded in 1959 by Swami Vishnudevananda, we are a non-profit organization whose purpose is to share the teachings of Yoga and Vedanta as a means of achieving physical, mental and spiritual well-being and attaining self-realization. The Centre in Toronto was established in 1962 and is part of The International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres. Swami Sivananda (1887 - 1963) One of the great sages of modern times, Swami Sivananda is the inspiration behind our organization. His aim in life was the dissemination of spiritual knowledge. His motto was: “Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realize.” Swami Vishnudevananda (1927 - 1993) Founder of the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, Swami Vishnudevananda was a world authority on Hatha and Raja Yoga. Swamiji was also known as the “Flying Swami” for the different peace missions he pursued around the world. His motto was: “Health is wealth, peace of mind is happiness, Yoga shows the way.” We are all volunteers: Teachers, staff and helpers. All of our teachers have completed the Sivananda Yoga Teachers’ Training Course, recognized by the Yoga Alliance, and have a minimum certification of RYT-200. All teachers, helpers and full-time staff members in the organization are working on a volunteer basis. Karma Yoga (selfless service) is acknowledged as a means to inner purification, elimination of the ego and spiritual growth. All talents are welcome. Meditating together in a group creates a strong spiritual atmosphere which allows for a deeper experience of meditation. Satsang is the heart of yoga practice. It consists of 30 minutes of silent meditation, 30 minutes of meditative chanting of mantras and kirtan followed by a lecture on yoga philosophy or psychology.
