1 A Message from the President What is Rotary? The Rotary International Theme for this year is “Engage Rotary, Change Lives” and I would have to say this year, and the past 75 years, our Club has done just that! From the Frankenmuth Scout Building to the Harvey E. Kern Community Pavilion we have enhanced the Frankenmuth Community. In addition, we have reached communities beyond our borders through numerous Polio Plus and Clean Water projects. These, along with countless other initiatives, have been achieved through the leadership and “can do spirit” and “must do attitude” of our members. We are 1.2 million neighbors, friends, and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world. Over the past 75 years our members have challenged themselves to do “just a little bit more” and reached beyond what others would consider “good enough” in making our community and our world a better place. This is our past; this is where we have been. The question before us today is how to build upon this solid foundation of service. Joining together as members, business leaders and friends unifying individual strengths into one powerful force for the ideal of service, we will continue impacting communities locally and internationally. Acting in this fashion will not only honor those who have come before us but will also be a model for those who follow. Whether your heritage links you to our Club’s beginning or our membership has stoked the fire of service that burns within, we all “Celebrate 75 years of Rotary – Past, Present and Future”. As my term as Club President in this 75th Anniversary year draws to a close, I thank you for the opportunity to serve. It has truly been my honor and privilege. Brian S. McLeod Frankenmuth Rotary Club President 2013-2014 The Frankenmuth Noon Rotary Club meets at Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth at 12:10pm every Thursday. 2 Table of Contents What is Rotary? ....................................page 3 The Rotary Foundation .......................page 4 District 6310 .........................................page 5 Paul Harris Fellows ..............................page 6 Past Presidents ......................................page 8 Club Sponsored Paul Harris Fellows ..........................page 8 Charter Members .................................page 9 Current Club Members .....................page 10 Honorary Members ...........................page 16 How We Raise Funds.........................page 17 Causes We Support ............................page 18 The Fun We Have ...............................page 23 Anniversary Recognitions ................page 24 Our differing occupations, cultures, and countries give us a unique perspective. Our shared passion for service helps us accomplish the remarkable. We make a difference at home and around the world: Our members can be found in your community and across the globe. HOW DO WE WORK? Our impact starts with our members—people who work tirelessly with their clubs to solve some of our communities’ toughest challenges. Their efforts are supported by Rotary International, our member association, and The Rotary Foundation, which turns generous donations into grants that fund the work of our members and partners around the world. Rotary is led by our members—responsible leaders who help to carry forward our organization’s mission and values in their elected roles. HOW DID WE GET HERE? We’ve been making history and bringing our world closer together for over 100 years. Since forming in 1905, we’ve taken on some of the world’s toughest challenges and helped a wide range of international and service organizations—from the UN to Easter Seals—get started. HOW DO WE USE OUR FUNDS? Responsible leadership means more than just doing good work— it means making the most out of every donation we receive. Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. 3 Avenues of Service The Rotary Foundation The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary, we tap into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money, and expertise into our priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Foundation grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact. Strong financial oversight, a stellar charity rating, and a unique funding model mean that we make the very most of your contribution. Give and become a part of Rotary’s life-changing work! HISTORY OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION At the 1917 convention, outgoing RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed to set up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. GROWTH OF THE FOUNDATION In 1929, the Foundation made its first gift of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. “Daddy” Allen, later grew into Easter Seals. We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity. Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan. Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society. Learn more in An Introduction to Vocational Service and the Code of Conduct. Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest. Learn more in Communities in Action: A Guide to Effective Projects and this Community Service presentation (PPT). International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more. Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange. When Rotary founder Paul Harris died in 1947, contributions began pouring in to Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation. EVOLUTION OF FOUNDATION PROGRAMS 1947: The Foundation established its first program, Fellowships for Advance Study, later known as Ambassadorial Scholarships. 1965-66: Three programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants. 1978: Rotary introduced the Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants. The first 3-H Grant funded a project to immunize 6 million Philippine children against polio. 1985: The PolioPlus program was launched to eradicate polio worldwide. 1987-88: The first peace forums were held, leading to Rotary Peace Fellowships. 2013: New district, global, and packaged grants enable Rotarians around the world to respond to the world’s greatest needs. Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, the Foundation has received contributions totaling more than $1 billion. 4 District 6310 1. Alma-St. Louis 2. Alpena 3. Bad Axe 4. Bay City 5. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings: Of the things we think, say or do Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? 28
