May 2015 Newsletter - Utah`s Perfect Pointers
UTAH’S PERFECT POINTERS May 2015 Welcome to our third newsletter for 2015! We love hearing from you via email and on facebook. We especially appreciate receiving pictures of your dogs and their friends. Check out some recent pictures from adopters on page 4. If you missed our previous newsletters they’re posted on www.utahsperfectpointers.org. The complete story of Tate starts with the September 2014 newsletter. Our Featured Adoptable Boy - Little Man Tate Little Man Tate came to us July 1, 2014 as a perfectly healthy, playful GSP pup. During his neuter surgery he threw a blood clot to his lower lumbar and became totally paralysed. He was also losing blood and could barely lift his head. He was hospitalized for four days and I scheduled an autopsy for Day 5 when, lo and behold, the little dude decided to live. It must have been the good care at Healing Hearts or the satin balls I hand fed him. He still couldn’t stand without being propped up but within a day he was able to pull himself across the grass and my husband and I cheered when his back legs started working independently. We tried a number of therapies to help get those back feet to stop knuckling under 7/14 booties (very expensive which he thought were delicious), physical therapy for 4 months, T-touch therapy, and exercises. By November we realized that he wasn’t going to recover 4/15 completely. He couldn’t care less. We’ve scrapped the booties except for rain and snow and 7/14 learned to wrap his feet to protect them and keep his toes “up”. He can spend all day at daycare and go running after birds in the yard with the rest of the herd. Nothing keeps this little man down. He has no survival instinct with other dogs - just figures they all want to be his buddy and he flops across them to sleep. He doesn’t know how special he is. His feet need to be wrapped every morning and unwrapped at night. He’s a perfect little pointer ready for his own home. 2/15 8/14 9/14 10/14 Donations Updates Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to our pack in March and April. Phoebe (”Phoebs”) Update Phoebe’s story with us began in February and was featured in the March newsletter. After being shot and in pain for at least two years she’s living the good life. Her leg surgery went so well thanks to Erin McGillic at Healing Hearts and her foster family who takes such good care of her. It was wonderful - even getting the herd up at 4:00 am to be downtown for the kick-off. Phoebs stayed in bed and let Tate represent her at She still has a piece of shrapnel as a vestige of her past but o’dark hundred. We made a whopping $1094 to cover Poebs’ it’s only a reminder for us and not a hindrance to her. leg surgery thanks to: Claire - Nia’s mom Sherry - GSP lover Jill - Cowboy’s mom Magali - Phoebs’ vet Lindsay - Dog Lodge Kara - Gatsby’s mom Kelly - Kaylee’s mom Christina - Griff’s mom Connie - rescue friend Tammy - Addie’s mom Marissa- Kaisar’s mom Jeannie - rescue friend Staci - Dylan’s & Truffle’s mom Phoebe loves everyone Laura - Indy’s & Murphy’s mom she meets. Strut Your Mutt 2015 Utah’s Perfect Pointers is participating in this year’s Strut Your Mutt at Liberty Park on October 24th! Yes, we know it will probably be snowing but pointers and friends love snow! Watch for our announcement and sign-up information on our facebook page and website in a couple of weeks. We’ll be providing more information in the July newsletter. Our Featured Daycare/Boarding Facility Old Farm Pet Resort We are so fortunate to have the support of daycare/boarding facilities that help us when we don’t have enough foster homes for our dogs (always) and allow our dogs who are being fostered to attend daycare at no cost so their parents can go to work. From north to south these wonderful businesses are: Utah Dog Park, Diggity Dog Pet Resort, Camp Bow Wow, Old Farm Pet Resort, Dog Lodge, and Dog Town. Animal Park (S. Ogden) and Laundermutts (W. Jordan) also provide daycare and occasional boarding when we’re stuck - often at the last minute. This newsletter pays tribute to Old Farm Pet Resort. Watch for information about Dog Lodge in our July newsletter. If you’re looking for daycare/boarding for your best friend, please support these good samaritans who support our rescue. In Memory Aggie was Ken’s best girl for over 14 years. Everyone in the Salt Lake dog community knew her and loved her. They attended every Strut Your Mutt event, competed in the Doggy Olympics (and have the medals to prove it!), and were inseparable. Sweet dreams little girl. OLD FARM PET RESORT is our longest supporter. They’ve been caring for our homeless hunters since 2009. We couldn’t survive without them. Owner Leslie Papas and the staff know their clients (human and 4-legged) and care for them as their own. Someone’s injured and needs a space of their own? They have it! Someone needs meds? Taken care of! Someone needs to run and run and run (probably a pointer type)? There’s tons of space to do that! Don’t feel particularly sociable today? No problem - there’s a separate area for you. And if you happen to be a cat, there’s even a place for you to hang out while your folks are out of town that’s far away from those dogs. Everyone goes through training so the whole gang is safe whether they’re inside or outside in one of the three large play areas. If you ask for a tour you’ll see at least 5-6 pointer types clamoring for attention amidst a basset brigade. Some are ours. Some were ours and are happily adopted. The staff has a strong commitment to the Utah rescue community and assist many groups with their socialization and boarding needs. Old Farm has climate-controlled indoor areas with cozy beds in the spacious indoor kennels and soothing music for a peaceful sleep. And when they’re ready to go home your furbies can be bathed and waiting or you can “do-it-yourself” right there. You’re always welcome to visit and drop your dog off for a first complimentary socialization day at 3968 South 200 East, Salt Lake City or call 801-266-9016 for more information. http://www.oldfarmpetresort.com/ Holidays!
