APRIL 2008 Building Update FROM THE HELM In the spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours. – Mark Twain Spring is here and there. It teases us like Alice’s smiling Cheshire cat, appearing and disappearing from one day to the next. On many days it is too wet from dew or heavy mist to put paint on the new ferry, but I am painting myself with sun block while working in the boat yard, and yet ice requires removal from the car the next morning. Wading in the bay is uncomfortable without a wetsuit and then it is so hot at mid day I am wearing shorts. Welcome spring, please stay a little longer. The vote on March 2 was decisively in favor of going ahead with the expansion. We are close to starting. However, there have been a few last minute details that will delay the permit availability. In short, the delays are obtaining final approval for the sprinkler plan, and deleting a note on the building plan. The bank and escrow are ready to start paperwork as soon as we have the permit available. The foundation construction will start within a month of the permit being obtained. I have included a layout of the new building and we need to have a décor in mind (see next page). The building committee will help to coordinate this activity, so please give your input to Ofer Amir, Margie Gater, Terry Ramseyer, Mimi Wisnom, or Kelly Pike. We can start to sail from the dock which is being reassembled for the summer season. A new ferry is ready to go. The sea birds, seals, and otters will be back for our entertainment. We have a membership open house on March 30 and Opening Day on our Bay is coming up April 5. It is time to find an excuse to come down and relax. See you at the club. – Kelly On Board Port captain Suzy provided an overview of the wine tasting event to gather input so that we can update our offerings. Membership informed the board that the website upgrade is moving along slower than anticipated but we are making progress. The board considered requests for overnight stays on the club premise and decided that the club was not ready to make overnight stays an option. The sailing committee and C15 fleet presented a 2008 plan making C15s availability for the summer youth sailing program. The board asked for some modifications to the proposal. The board reviewed limitations to onsite activities that make a public solicitation and include possible financial transactions. The Finance committee updated the board on the bank discussions for the expansion and project timing. With increasing activities around the club we are experiencing a short fall of hospitality/watch officer volunteers for the first time in quite a while. Hospitality is fun to do when there are many hands on board. If you have an interest in helping out with hospitality please contact Martha Tingle or Suzy Pinkerton. Boat Yard Denizens: Do you have a boat or trailer in the yard now? This includes small vessels and kayaks too. Have you moved a boat into or out of the yard this year? Please contact Boatyard manager Dave Weeks at weekssailing@aol.com or (650) 560-0104 to be sure he has any changes recorded in the inventory. We are running up against a severe space shortage and many people have worked hard to free up space for the anticipated construction of our new building. We need your cooperation to be sure that we correctly identify each item in the boatyard. Fire sale to follow. – Larry Miller, Facilities Director Half Moon Bay Yacht Club Newsletter – 2008 HMBYC Building Expansion CCK Kayak Rental and Lessons 3 Bathrooms 3 Showers HMBYC Club House 390 sq’ Deck Multi Purpose Hall 1600 sq ft Deck 920 sq’ Old Deck The expanded area will start as an open room with the showers and bathrooms in the back. Construction will start this spring and finish by year end. Future steps are: deciding on a décor, where to relocate the club house bar service, and, adding improvements to create a comfortable, attractive, multi-purpose space with weekday rental potential. AHOY! APRIL 2008 CLEAN UP DAY—March 29 There was a terrific turn-out for the Club Clean-up on Saturday. The weather was fine and the mood enthusiastic as scores of people pitched in to help spruce up the Yacht Club, finished building the ferry, and moved boats and lumber around the yard. Big thanks to everyone including: Eileen Bowden, Dale and Diane Ross, Mike Shimeld and kids (Aiden, Steven, Caroline and Fiona), Bjorn Kirby, Carol Smith, Dave Weeks, Andy Geiser, Terry Ramseyer, Kelly Pike, Bob Cantillo, Bjorn Conrad, Peggy Ruse, Wes Brykailo, Dave Morris, Leon Smith, Paul Minoletti, Mimi Wisnom, Nan Leatherwood, Mike Lawler, Claire Borkert, Steve Habelow, Neal Wehtje, John Dicker, and any others we forgot to mention. Thanks for being there and doing a great job. – Larry Miller, Facilities Director IRISH LASSES SERVE UP ST. Ireland’s gift to HMBYC (pictured above and below) once again made an Irish Dinner Night memorable for alarge crowd with a superb lamb stew, generous salad, and Enda Crowe’s fabulous Irish Brown Bread. When asked for his recipe, Enda wrote: “Greetings Cynthia, and many thanks for your kind words regarding the bread. I have been asked to share this recipe by so many people however the problem is that it belongs to a commercial baker who shared it with me on the condition that I can use it but am not allowed to share it. If it is of any consolation even Bernie does not know what the recipe is! The agree-ment I have is that I can bake as many loaves as I want but the recipe itself must remain out of the public domain for as long as his company remains in the baking business. I really do feel bad that I cannot pass this recipe around but I gave my word to this gentleman many years ago and it would be remiss of me not to keep it. Best Regards, Enda” Let’s hope that Enda feels inspired to bake bread again when the Irish Lasses are in the kitchen. CAUGHT IN THE ACT… Every so often we catch people in the act…of doing something really useful. This month AHOY! recognizes LEON SMITH, who resurrected the popcorn machine, not once but three times. In the process he tracked down the $47 part to affect the repair instead of spending $1200 for a new machine. Nevertheless, CLARKE & JEAN SIMM donated a new popcorn popper, so now we have backup. (No, no, don’t back up!) And thanks to KAY BURNS, who more than once made popcorn the old-fashioned way on the stove top to keep popcorn cravings fed. Dierdre and Arline cut to the pot of gold in the cake Half Moon Bay Yacht Club Newsletter IT’S BAAAACK!! The great storm of January 4, 2008 reduced the Club’s ferry to smithereens and beach kindling. Now, less than three months after the disaster, intrepid Commodore Kelly Pike and his hearty helpers have put a new and improved ferry in the water so our members and sailors can get to the floating docks and enjoy the Club’s boats this coming spring and summer. Kudos to the Ferry Guys Bob Cantillo, Bjorn Conrad, Larry Miller and Kelly Pike. Well done, gentlemen!! PARTY! Saturday MAY 17th Getting ready to put the ferry back where it belongs – out in the harbor. Mark your calendars and plan to be at HMBYC on Saturday, May 17th to help celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Best Little Yacht Club ever. Whether you are a charter member or just joined on March 30th, come help celebrate the fact that Half Moon Bay Yacht Club’s Community of Friends is still here, growing, thriving, and getting ready to add more space for all the events that happen at everyone’s beach-front property. Plans are still being made for this celebration: with luck we will be able to dance to live music on the newly poured foundation for the expansion building the membership voted to fund on March 2. Phyllis Smith and Barb Walt will be creating a succulent menu to delight everyone’s palate. And who knows, there may be a ground-breaking ceremony and other special presentations. Larry Miller, Kelly Pike and Harry Ysselstein see that the new and refined ferry gets into the water. If you would like to be a part of this very special day at HMBYC, please contact event Chair Cynthia Ramseyer at (650) 726-4860 or 2blackcats@comcast.net and say, “Count me in!” As always, volunteers are needed to help set up, cook, serve, clean up, make flower arrangements, decorate the Clubhouse, and make a party happen. Bottom line: be there! $25 per person. Reservations in advance requested. Commodore Kelly Pike pushes yet another successful venture forward into HMBYC’s future. Photos courtesy of Neal Wehtje AHOY!
