PAF 5 SOURCES Mesa AZ FamilySearch Library Why Source? Documents the place you found a record. Future Generations will be able to find the record. Your Research will be taken seriously! What is a Source? A Large Group of Records For Example: A Census, County Vital Records, State Naturalization Records, Land Grant Records, Published Family Histories, Military Records, etc. A Citation is the specific marker for the record you used. Think of a Ribbon in a Bible that marks the place you need. Where do we enter Sources? 1. 2. 1. Click on Edit 2. Highlight and click on Source List 3. Select New on Pop-up Screen 3. One Time Only 1. 1. Type in Title, Author, Publication Information 2. Click on Repository and fill in Name & Address 3. Click OK 4. Click OK on Source screen Now you can use this Source OVER and OVER again! 2. Title should start with a Broad Description of Record 3. 4. Add Another Source Repeat Steps of “Click on New, Type in Title, etc.” then click OK Notice Highlighted Record appears in top box of Source List When Editing 3. 2. 1. 1. Click on Edit To bring up Screen, change information 2. Click OK 3. Records can be Organized by Type of Record – i.e. “Birth Certificates” OR… Keep Adding and Editing 4. Organize Records By Place – i.e. “New Jersey” 4. Use whatever method works for you – Keep Sources Broad to be used Over and Over! (Same Source List as on Previous Page) How to Connect a Source 2. 1. Bring up Edit Screen by either: 1. Double click on Highlighted Individual or: 2. Click on Edit and choose Individual How to Connect a Source Know Your Screen 1. Individual Sources button ties to Person 2. Small “s” ties to specific event in Person’s life 3. Yellow Book button shows Source List connected to Person 3. 2. 1. Click on Individual Source button 1. Highlight Source needed 2. Click on Select 3. Citation 1 pops up (the Ribbon in the Bible) 1. 3. 2. 4. Fill in appropriate Detail (look on record for date) 4. Describe Record 5. Click OK 4. 5. 6. Double Click on Small “s” 1. Highlight Source Needed 2. Click on Select Button 3. Citation 1 pops up (Ribbon in the Bible) 1. 3. 2. 4. Fill in Detail – Film # and Date Record was made (look on document) 5. Describe Record 6. Click OK 4. 5. 6. How to View a Connected Source An * asterisk tells us there is a Source to view 1. Double Click on Small “s” 2. Click on Individual Sources 3. Click on Yellow Book Repeat for Next Person Highlight Next Person and Double Click for Edit Screen Click on Individual Sources or Double Click on “s” Select Source and Fill in Citation – Click OK Don’t Forget to SAVE! Additional Citations for Individual or Specific Events stack behind the first Citation. Click on Citation 2 to view Click OK to exit screen When Sources are entered Click on the Yellow Book button to view all Sources for this Person Connect a Source to Marriage Highlight Marriage and Double Click for Edit Screen Family Sources – for Sources relating to the entire family Small “s” ties to Marriage Event Follow same steps to Connect a Source to an Individual Don’t forget to SAVE! Specific Event Source Corresponds to Source List at end of Report View Sources on Family Group Sheet Source List is Printed at end of Report Source Numbers Correspond with Numbers on Previous pages How to Fix Problems in Source List 1. 2. 1. Click on Tools 2. Highlight and Click on Merge Duplicate Sources and Citations This will automatically Merge EXACT Duplicates Other Problems in Source List 1. 3. 2. 5. 4. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Click on File Click on Print Reports, screen pops up Click on Lists Click on Citations referencing a source Click on Preview Other Problems in Source List 8. 6. Highlight Source with 6. 7.
