SCG XIII Legion Field 12:02 pm CT SERIES: Grambling leads 16-5 Earier this season... Alabama A&M got its first-ever win at Grambling 20-14 in Week #4 of the 2011 season. No Two Teams Know the SCG Better... Grambling and Alabama A&M have played in more SWAC Football Championship Games than any other two conference schools. The teams have faced each other three other times with the Tigers earning victories each time. Kaderius Lacey scored on a 2-yard run with 49 seconds left and Alabama A&M held off a fourthquarter rally by Grambling. Grambling is making its record seventh appearance in the title game. Its only loss came in 2007 vs. Jackson State, 42-31. GSU avenged that loss in 2008 defeating JSU 41-9. The Bulldogs took a 14-0 lead in the third quarter after Lacey’s 5-yard touchdown run and Vandric Jackson’s 53-yard fumble recovery that went for a score. Alabama A&M won its only title game in 2006, 22-13 over UAPB. A&M lost in 2009 to Prairie View in its last championship game appearance. Grambling didn’t go away easily. In the fourth, the Tigers used a 4-yard rushing score by Dawrence Roberts and Mario Louis’ 77-yard touchdown catch to tie the game at 14-14 with 8:08 to play. SCG Team Records Grambling (2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008) 5-1 Alabama A&M (2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009) 1-4 Alabama State (2001, 2003, 2004, 2010) 1-3 Southern (1999, 2003, 2004) 2-1 Jackson State (1999, 2007, 2008) 1-2 Texas Southern (2010) 1-0 Prairie View A&M (2009) 1-0 Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2006) 0-1 But Alabama A&M went a nine play, 54-yard drive that was capped by Lacey’s go-ahead score. Lacey finished with 178 yards rushing on 30 carries. Roberts rushed for 198 yards on 27 attempts for Grambling. 2011 Standings EASTERN DIVISION Conference Overall Team Alabama A&M Jackson State Alabama State Alcorn State Mississippi Valley State W 7 7 7 1 1 L 2 2 2 8 8 Pct. .778 .778 .778 .111 .111 PF 186 317 257 152 147 PA 179 137 157 256 259 W 8 9 8 2 1 L 3 2 3 8 10 Pct. .700 .800 .700 .222 .091 WESTERN DIVISION Conference Overall Team Grambling State Arkansas-Pine Bluff Prairie View A&M Southern Texas Southern W 6 5 5 4 2 L 3 4 4 5 7 Pct. .667 .556 .556 .444 .222 PF 223 211 239 197 180 PA 200 210 242 202 267 w w w. s w a c . o r g • W 7 6 5 4 4 L 4 5 6 7 7 1 Pct. .636 .545 .455 .364 .364 PF 227 394 294 210 150 PA 206 168 192 272 333 Streak Won 1 Won 2 Won 1 Lost 4 Lost 2 PF 274 232 279 237 271 PA 235 236 339 273 284 Streak Won 6 Won 2 Lost 1 Lost 1 Lost 2 2 0 1 1 S WA C F O O T B A L L • G A M E N O T E S • G r a m b l i n g v s . A l a b a m a A & M Farmers Insurance SWAC Championship Game Presented by Toyota • December 10 Honor the Heritage • Founded 1920 12 Pro Football Hall of Famers 15 College Football Hall of Famers Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Game Notes Alabama A&M is in the championship game via a three-way tie-breaker in the Eastern Division with Alabama State and Jackson State at 7-2 (JSU was ineligible to participate in the championship game even if it had won the tie-breaker). Since each of the three tied teams had a 1-1 record against each other and a 3-1 record against the Eastern Division, no divisional tie-breaker gave one team an advantage. Actually, in the tiebreaker scenarios, the Western Division standings ended up breaking the Eastern Division tie. Since Grambling finished atop the West, and Alabama A&M and Alabama State both defeated Grambling, Jackson State was eliminated from the tie-breaker, leaving A&M and Alabama State. The Bulldogs defeated the Hornets head-to-head, and therefore, earned a berth into the championship game. With Grambling qualifying at 6-3 in the SWAC this season, this is the third straight year, and the fourth time overall, that a divisional representative has had three conference losses. Alabama State (6-3) in 2010, Alabama A&M in 2009 (4-3), and Alabama A&M in 2006 (6-3) are the three other times it has happened. Only the 2006 Alabama A&M team went on to win the SWAC Championship Game. Only two teams in the SWAC have never qualified for the championship game, Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State. Arkansas-Pine Bluff is the only other team never to have won a title in the 12 previous championship games. Every team from the Western Division has represented the division at least once in the title game. The SWAC Championship Game has gone five straight years with a different champion in each of those seasons. This year’s matchup assures a repeat champion within at least the last four title games (Grambling in 2008 or Alabama A&M in 2006). The Western Division holds a 9-3 overall advantage over the Eastern Division in the previous 12 championship games. The West has won three straight in the series as well. Grambling has outscored Alabama A&M 90-31 in its three previous SWAC Championship Game wins over the Bulldogs. The Western Division has outscored the Eastern Division 340-244 in the previous 12 championship games. The “Tigers” (GSU, JSU, TSU) have won seven previous SWAC Championship Games. SHERIDAN (SBN) Grambling has won or shared 22 SWAC titles (all since 1960). Alabama A&M, who did not join the SWAC until 1999, has won just one title, in 2006. Alabama A&M won five more conference games in 2011 (7-2) than it did in 2010 (2-7). That marks the second straight year and the third time overall a team has improved by five wins to get to the championship game. Alabama State in 2010 (1-6 in 2009 to 6-3 in 2010) and Grambling in 2007 (3-6 in 2006 to 8-1 in 2007). A five-game turnaround in wins, however, is not the record. Grambling went from 3-4 in 2004 to 9-0 in 2005 en route to a win over A&M in the title game. This year will mark the first time since 2008 that both teams that qualified for the SWAC Championship Game put together at least a six-game winning streak during the season. Grambling enters this year’s title game on a current six-game winning streak, while Alabama A&M won seven straight games during the regular season. In 2008, Jackson State won six consecutive games before losing in the championship game to Grambling, which closed the season with a title and a 10-game winning streak. Ironically, it also happened the last two times Alabama A&M and Grambling met in the championship game (2005 and 2002). In 2005, just the same as in 2008, GSU’s opponent (A&M) entered the championship game on a six-game streak, while the Tigers won their 10th straight in the title game. In 2004, neither team carried a long streak into the title game, but had a six-game (AAMU) and a 10-game (GSU) streak during the season. It also happened in 2001 when Alabama State won eight consecutive games after starting the season 0-2, and Grambling won seven straight games to open the season at 7-0 before losing. No team has ever entered the SWAC Championship Game with an undefeated record for the season. The attendance record for a SWAC Championship Game is 47,621 in the first one ever held in 1999. The highest attended Grambling championship game was in 2007 (43,236), and the highest attended Alabama A&M championship game was in 2000 (34,687). Doug Williams is 3-0 all-time in the SWAC Championship Game leading the Grambling State Tigers, including a head-to-head win over Anthony Jones in 2002. Jones is 1-3 in the SWAC Championship Game leading the Alabama A&M Bulldogs. The two head coaches were teammates with the Washington Redskins and won a Super Bowl together during the 1987 NFL season.
