CFD Assists with Livingston Parish Building Fire
From Central Fire Department
On
Tuesday
morning
at 10:53 am, the Central Fire
Department was dispatched along
with the East Side Fire Department
to assist with a building fire in
Livingston Parish. The fire was
at the Magnolia Respiratory
& Medical Equipment located
at 235 Florida St. in Denham
Springs. On arrival, the Denham
Springs Fire Incident Commander
assigned all East Baton Rouge
Parish apparatus and personnel to
the rear of the structure along with
Livingston Parish Fire District 5
Fire Department.
Firefighters were faced
with a two story building heavily
involved with fire and threatening
a nearby building. While the main
building was destroyed by fire,
firefighters prevented the fire from
spreading to the adjacent building.
Central firefighters remained on
scene for five hours, with Central's
engine pumping over 250,000
gallons of water to the Livingston
Parish Fire District 5 tower ladder.
Central Fire Department Deputy
Chief Charles Mondrick stated
the construction of the building
created numerous void spaces,
which allowed the fire to spread
rapidly throughout the building.
The rear half of the building
also had a double roof which
created additional obstacles for
firefighters. There were no injuries
to firefighters and all Central
apparatus and personnel cleared
the scene shortly after 3:00 pm.

EBRSO Central Crime Update
Two Arrested in $2,000 Alcohol Theft
George Garret of Baton Rouge and
Marquis Banks were arrested on January 30th
for the theft of over $2,000 of alcohol from the
Central Walmart.
An EBR Sheriff’s Detective observed
the two leaving Walmart with liquor they had
not paid for. Banks fled the scene on foot
across Sullivan Road with the detective in
pursuit. When Banks attempted to get into the
car driven by Garret, the detective held them
both at gunpoint, had them exit the vehicle, and
placed them in handcuffs.
Both suspects were booked into the
EBR Parish Prison for Simply Burglary and
three counts of Theft.
Attempted Burglary at Central Drug Store
On January 25th EBRSO responded to a
reported burglary at the Central Drug Store and
found that a beige ceramic tile had been thrown
through the front glass door.
Later in the evening an EBRSO deputy
in an unmarked unit observed Tyler M. Latting
of Baton Rouge walking through the parking
lot near the pharmacy. Latting told the deputy
that he was waiting for a ride.
Upon further investigation Latting’s
Nissan was found on the other end of the
parking lot, and in plain view on the seat was
a box of the same ceramic tiles. Latting was
arrested and charged with attempted burglary.
In Latting’s possession at the time of the
arrest were seven Hydrocodone pills and two
Alprazolam pills, schedule two and schedule
four narcotics.
EBRSO Marijuana Arrest
On January 29th Jassem Hamed of
Central was pulled over for driving without tail
lights on Greenwell Springs Road in Central.
As Hamed stepped out of the vehicle, the
EBRSO officer detected the strong smell of
burnt Marijuana.
The officer immediately advised Hamed
and the two passengers in the vehicle of their
rights. The officer then asked Hamed for
permission to search the vehicle, to which the
accused replied “sure you can search all you
want, all I have is a small bag of weed.”
Three clear plastic bags containing what
appeared to be Marijuana were found, along
with four pipes which the accused admitted he
used to smoke the substance. He added that
he had just purchased the suspected Marijuana
and that it was his to smoke for the week.
Hamed was transported to EBR Parish Prison
and booked.

Sunday night at 10:42 pm Central Fire
Department was dispatched to the 15200 block
of Frenchtown Road for a traffic accident
with wires down. On arrival, firefighters were
greeted by an amazing sight. A pickup left the
roadway and struck a power pole. The impact
broke the pole in half with the top portion of
the pole containing energized electrical wires
and a transformer coming to rest in the bed of
the pickup. The dangling energized electrical
lines covered the cab of the pickup.
Fortunately, the driver of the pickup
remained inside of the vehicle until power was
cut by Demco. The driver suffered only minor
injuries; however many residents in the area
were without power for hours. Central Fire
Chief Bill Porche cautions all drivers to remain
in their vehicle if they are in an accident and
power lines entangle their vehicle.

CHS Marketing
Program Receives
Educational Grant
The Central High School
Marketing Program and teacher,
Ms. Dykes, were awarded an
educational grant from the
Marketing
Education
Retail
Alliance (MERA). For the 20142015 school year, the grant
received is in the amount of
$7120.00. MERA was created in
2000 and is administered by the
Louisiana Retailers Association.
MERA grants are funded through
the Louisiana Department of
Economic Development under the
authority of LA R.S. 47:318.
The educational grant
provided by MERA shall be
used to purchase educational
supplies to enhance Louisiana’s
Marketing Education classrooms.
Such items that may be purchased
are:
computer/technology
equipment; computer software;
classroom supplies; competition
preparation materials; and other
marketing education-related items
that are necessary for students
and the classroom. This year’s
grant will also aid in students
participating in some off-campus
learning opportunities to enrich
their knowledge learned in the
classroom.
The MERA association
has, in the past, provided grant
funds to LA marketing teachers
for materials and equipment to
improve and enhance marketing
programs throughout the state. Due
to more state and local budget cuts,
these funds are helping teachers
provide rigorous and relevant
curriculum in the classroom for
which students can take with them
upon graduation and into their
chosen career field(s).
Programs and associations
such as MERA make it possible to
successfully teach and prepare our
young individuals for tomorrow,
and it is much appreciated within
the city and schools of Central,
LA.
To help feed those in need,
Central Chiropractic Center on
Sullivan Road will be holding a
canned food drive. A new patient
that brings in 8 non-perishable food
items will receive an initial exam,
x-rays, therapy, and adjustment
with no out of pocket fee ($150
value). On March 4th an existing
patient can bring in the same items
and their fee will be waived. You
must call to make an appointment.
When you participate in
the food drive, your name will be
entered to win a 30 minute massage.

It’s that time of year again when we start

families will pay a one-time membership fee
of $500. Students entering as 11th or 12th

Students Learn Local
Government Practices
100th Day Celebration
Seniors in Ms. Alicia Fergerson’s 5th
hour civics class spent two weeks in January
learning about the functions and responsibilities of local government. For a portion
of the discussion, the class welcomed Mayor
Jr. Shelton to the classroom on two different
days.
On his first visit, Mayor Shelton discussed the inner workings of Central’s government. His second visit focused more on
the future of Central as he asked students to
provide him with a list of attractions they
might like to see in Central.
The students’ study of local government
concluded with attendance of the January
27 city council meeting where they were
able to observe government in action.
Thank you to Mayor Shelton for taking
the time out of his schedule to come and
meet with our students
Preschool and kindergarten students celebrated the 100th Day of School on Thursday, January
29. As a part of their special celebration, students held a 100th Day parade down the high school hall
to show off their t-shirts. Each t-shirt was complete with 100 items attached to it. They continued
their day with various classroom activities that helped them learn how to count to 100.

CAPA Corner: King Cake
Recently I found myself in
a conversation with an Australian,
Mexican, and Texan discussing
“King Cakes.” One in the group
had just tasted his first King
Cake and thought the name was
humorous. Being from Louisiana,
I was happy to share the traditions
associated with this delicacy.
After hearing more about
the tradition, one laughed with
surprise and remarked, “Another
thing we got from Christians.”
Unfortunately, our conversation
was interrupted. I wanted to
ask the man to list other things
which he believed the world
received from Christians. Was he
adding King Cakes to a list which
included Christmas trees, cookies,
and parties? Was he thinking of
Easter eggs and the Easter bunny?
His
simple
remark
continues to bother me. What
have Christians given to the
world? I hope it is more than King
Cakes. This question pertaining
to Christians is quite different
than the significant question
about what Christ has given to the
world—a question long debated by
theologians and theme for many a
sermon by preachers.
It is a different question to
consider what Christians give to a
community. Again, hopefully it is
more than King Cakes during the
season of Epiphany.
Perhaps, just perhaps,
this man was considering
Christians who he had met whose
lives had been transformed by
Christ. Perhaps he was thinking
of Christians who live a life
overflowing with love, hope, and
joy—those who bless others by
their gracious spirits, genuine
hospitality, and bountiful acts of
kindness.
As the Epiphany season
comes to a close, let us enjoy our
King Cakes, but let us also pray
that Christians will be remembered
for more than creating a delicacy
such as King Cakes! And may
all Christians be inspired to live
in such a way to be a blessing to
those around them.

Central High Girls’ and Boys’ Bowling Update
CENTRAL GIRLS BOWLING CRUISE AGAINST ST JOSEPH’S ACADEMY
CHS Girls’ Bowling (3-0) cruised to another win on
Wednesday (1-28-15) over St Joseph’s Academy (1-1). SJA
returned all of their starters from last year, a team that handed
Central their only loss in the regular season. But for the third
straight match, the Wildcats showed they will be tough to beat in
any match.
The Wildcats won all three games winning game 1 8-0
(934-710), game 2 7-1 (1002-764) and game 3 6-2 (852-820).
Central also won the 3 bonus points for total pins by almost 500
pins, 2788-2294. The 2788 is the 2nd highest series ever for the
Wildcats, just a little shy of last week's record setting 2842. But
the Wildcats did roll a new school record game with the 1002 in
game 2! Haley Young (Senior/Captain) led the team with a 571
(212, 193), Brittnee Robinson (Sophomore) had a career day with
a 534 series (213 game, both a personal high and 102 pins above
average) and Sam Soule (Sophomore) rolled a nice 426 (75 pins
above average). Kaylee Robinson (Junior) chipped in with a 185
and Sarah LeDuff (Junior) was right behind with a 183. St Joseph’s
Academy was led by Hope Bovard with a 488 (183).
Through three matches Central has the highest team average
in the Baton Rouge area with a 946, which is anchored by Young’s
183 average and LeDuff’s 182. St Scholastica is second highest
with a 912 and Albany is a distant third with an 846.
CENTRAL BOYS BOWLING KNOCKS OFF BROADMOOR
CHS Boys’ Bowling (3-0) kept on winning on Wednesday
(1-28-15), this time over Broadmoor (2-1). Broadmoor showed a
lot of improvement over last season, but Central’s talented lineup
proved to be a little too deep for the Bucs.
The Wildcats won the first two games easily, winning game
1 7-1 (1130-969) and game 2 6-2 (1092-975). Jacob Garretson
(Senior/Captain) and Johnathan Ryder (Junior) led the way in
game 1 with a 212 each and Dylan Ringo (Sophomore) rolled a
210. Game 2 was led by Ringo’s 218, followed by Garretson’s
212 and Parker Aucoin’s (Sophomore) 202. With the match all but
wrapped up for Central, the Bucs showed that they can roll a high
score as well and have the potential to cause teams problems as
they improve throughout the season. Broadmoor won game 3 5-3
with an impressive 1133 to Central’s 1029. Ringo was once again
high with a 235, followed by Garretson’s 217 and Aucoin’s 213.
Overall, the Wildcats won by a final score of 19-8 (3251-3077 total
pins) with Ringo leading the way with a nice 663 series, followed
by Garretson’s 641 and Aucoin’s 607. Broadmoor was led by Ritch
Bolden with a 578 (235).
Through three matches Central has the highest team average
in the Baton Rouge area with an 1100, which is anchored by
Garretson’s 222 average and Aucoin’s 206. Dutchtown is second
highest with a 1060 and St Amant is third with a 997.
