T he international construction industry is one of the top amongst those industries that get affected by global economic crises; the fact that the uncertainty in regards to the future keeps rising and that no balance point can be found has started to show its effects. The market share of the largest 250 International Contracting Companies’ has dropped in 2014 by 4.1 compared to the previous year and reversed down to 521.6 billion USD. Turkish Contracting Companies’ performance abroad has significantly risen. The total of the 2014 income of the 43 Turkish companies on the ENR list has risen by 43.4 % in comparison to the previous year and was realized as 29.3 billion USD. With these numbers, Turkish Companies’ total income which had a share of 3.8% in 2013 was realized as 5.6% in 2014. Turkish Contractor’s share in regional profit has shown increase in the whole world. AHMET ÇALIK Çalık Holding’s Chairman of the Board P articularly Gap İnşaat and Orta Asya which operate under Çalık Holding, have undersigned very significant projects in African and Middle-Eastern countries. Çalık Holding who realized over a hundred projects, which consist of infrastructure, suprastructure and industrial plants in the Fatherland Turkmenistan, has undertaken the construction of multiple significant facilities on three continents. The Group has undersigned contracts worth over 15 billion USD up to date. The Group’s latest opening was last month in Ashgabat the capital town of Turkmenistan, the health facilities which started to be constructed in 2013 have been completed and the facilities are open for service. The International Medical Education and Research Center, which was built by the Gap 146 EKOVİTRİN SEPTEMBER 2015 İnşaat (construction) company, has been equipped with medical systems supported by simulation which is a rapidly developing area in the field of medicine. The company is the first company to bring this new development to Turkmenistan. The foundation of the International Medical Education and Research Center was laid in 2013 and it has been built on an area which is about 21 thousand square meters. The center which provided an opportunity for scientific institutions such as TUBITAK, the Fraunhofer Institute, and the Max-Planck Institute to create joint projects will drive Turkmen Doctors and Turkmenistan’s work in the medical field up to world standards. Aside from these projects the Cardiology Hospital which has been opened for service by Gap İnşaat is built on an area of approximately 27 thousand square meters and the construction had started in 2013. The hospital has a capacity of 120 beds and responds to the medical service needs’ of Turkmenistan with the latest technology. Meanwhile another health facility construction project has been handed over to the Gap İnşaat company. ÇALIK COMES FORWARD WITH THEIR PROJECTS IN TURKMENISTAN Çalık Holding which has undersigned over a hundred projects mainly in Central Asian and African and Middle-Eastern countries comes especially forward with the projects that they realized in Turkmenistan. The total cost amount of the Holding’s projects up to date is more than 15 billion USD. The foundation of the Surgery and Endocrinology Center was laid by the President Berdimuhamedov and it will be constructed by Gap İnşaat. Constructing the largest fertilizer factory of Turkmenistan The largest fertilizer factory of Turkmenistan is being built by Çalık. The foundation of the 1,3 billion USD worth Garabogaz fertilizer factory has been laid with a ceremony last year and it will be constructed through a consortium between Gap İnşaat and the Japanese Mitsubishi Corporation. Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedov the president of Turkmenistan has laid the initial foundation of the construction of the largest fertilizer factory of the country together with; Çalık Holding’s Chairman of the Board of Directors Ahmet Çalık, Mitsubishi Corporation’s Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO Ken Kobayashi and Senior Vice President of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Terumasa Onaka. In accordance with the agreement; in the Garabogaz region close to the Caspian Sea, the fertilizer factory with a daily production capacity of 3.500 MT urea and 2.000 MT ammonia will be constructed with a budget of 1.3 billion USD. Logistics shipment of the product and the establishment of related infrastructure facilities are also included within the scope of the project. Turkmenbashi International Sea Port project Gap İnşaat has undertaken the EPC construction of the “Turkmenbashi International Sea Port” which has been designed as a logistics center on the pathway from Asia to Europe and which consists of 6 ports, 1 shipyard and has a projects cost of 1,5 billion USD. They just completed a 5.7 billion USD worth project in Africa. Öztürk Holding’s Chairman of the Board, Yusuf Öztürk expresses that in the upcoming years they will be realizing new projects which will be worth 53 billion USD. T he International Construction Industry Magazine, ENR’s (Engineering News Record) list of “250 largest international contracting firms of the world” which is prepared by taking the contractors’ profits made, from operations abroad in the previous year as a base, has been published. Last year there were 42 Turkish firms in the list whereas this year 43 firms made it into the list. Öztürk İnşaat who made it for the first time into the list this year, draw attention by ranking number one among the Turkish companies and ranking number 18 among the world. They Realized Giant projects in Africa Öztürk Holding’s Chairman of the Board, Yusuf Öztürk expresses that they made an entry into the African market ten years ago and that they have investments in Guinea, Ghana, Cameroon, Angola, Tanzania, Zambia and Sudan. He states that Öztürk İnşaat’s ongoing constructions in Africa and Saudi Arabia are worth 3.6 billion USD and that the construction of the 740 million USD worth double highway tender which they won in Cameroon last year is still ongoing. TURKEY’S PRIDE Yusuf Öztürk, managed to make it among the giants of the world in the contracting field. Öztürk Construction which he owns, took its place ranking as the 18th in the “250 largest international contracting firms of the world” list of the most famous construction field magazine of the world “Engineering News Record”, thus he became the pride of Turkey. Öztürk Construction who made it into the list for the first time, ranked as number one among the 43 Turkish firms that made it into the list. “A great pride on behalf of our country” Öztürk explains that they are the market leader in Africa and that there are undersigned agreements for the construction of future projects worth 53 billion USD and that they are working on the financing models of these projects. He further explains that they are working with government guarantees in Africa and that they are working on financing through international financial institutions and funds. Öztürk expresses that they were surprised to be on the list of the “250 largest international contracting firms of the world”; he details as follows, “We were active abroad with our 16 companies. Once we gathered these companies under one roof we made it into the list. This success is a great pride on behalf of our country. Last year Limak was ranking as the 163th. NİHAT ÖZDEMİR: HAPPY AND PROUD Limak Construction bid of 4 billion 340 million USD for the construction of a new Terminal Building at the Kuwait International Airport has been approved. The tender which Limak Construction won is the largest tender in one package, won by Turkish Constructors operating abroad. THE 4.3 BILLION USD TENDER IS LİMAK’S T he Kuwait Central Tender Committee (CTC) has announced that they approved Limak’s bid of 4 billion 340 million USD (1.312 billion dinar) for the construction of a new Terminal Building at the Kuwait International Airport. The tender which Limak Construction won is the largest tender in one package, won by Turkish Constructors operating abroad. Limak Holding’s Chairman of the Board Nihat Özdemir explains that the new terminal building construction in Kuwait is a project that they have been chasing for a long time, he continues with the following statement, ““We are happy and proud to have undertaken a project abroad with this scope, as a Turkish company. Once the tender approval notification arrives and the necessary procedures are completed, we will rapidly complete the construction of this terminal with utmost quality and open it for service.” Özdemir expresses that Limak is taking swift and determined steps towards becoming a global Turkish brand and continues with the following words, “We have undersigned significant projects in the area of Airport construction and operation within the last years. We constructed and operated the new terminal building of the Sabiha Gökçen airport. We constructed the Pristina airport terminal in Kosovo and are operating it. We are continuing the construction of the second terminal at the Cairo Airport in Egypt. Lastly, we won the construction project of the new terminal building at the Rostov Airport in Russia. We are part of the consortium for the construction and operation of the third airport in Turkey which will be the largest airport in the world. Since 2006 Rönesans has been successfully representing Turkey in the ENR list which is among the most prestigious and reliable studies on this subject. The company’s first entrance into the list was at the 86th place, this year it rose by approximately 50 rows. Kuzu Group Board Member Özen Kuzu, expressed that they undersigned a project of 57 thousand housing units in İran and this is the largest housing project which is being built with one contract in the world. T he ending of the economic sanctions applied for 12 years to Iran has lead Iran to open its doors to the world and turned the eyes of construction companies which operate in the region, especially Turkey’s eyes to Iran. The said development has also secured one of Turkey’s largest construction companies Kuzu Group’s leader position in the international markets, when they discovered the Iranian market in 2011 and undersigned a giant project of 57 thousand housing units. New opportunities and potential investments are present in Sub-Saharan Africa and South American countries. After the economic sanctions have been lifted in Iran, the positive course which will take place in the investment environment of the country may provide opportunities for Turkish Contractors. Chairman of the Turkey Contractors Union Mithat Yenigün expressed that Turkey has 43 Construction Companies in the ranking list of the world’s largest 250 construction companies, which places Turkey into the second place in the world. He adds that the success of the Turkish Contractors industry is no coincidence, given that they received 8.2 billion USD worth business worldwide in the first 6 months, despite of the negative circumstances. T he construction industry is among the first of the leading industries of the economy. The construction industry constitutes 6 % of the GDP on average and provides jobs for approximately 2 million people thus plays an important role in Turkey’s economic development. When considering 156 EKOVİTRİN SEPTEMBER 2015 the direct and indirect effects, the construction industry’s share within the Turkish economy rises up to 30% and its share of non-agricultural employment rises up to 10%. In 2014 the growth rate in the Turkish Economy dropped down to 2.9 % in the GDP, the dropping took place as 2.2% within in the industry. The industry’s shrinking trend continued in the first quarter of 2015 and it decreased by 3.51 %. The total number of projects undertaken by Turkish Constructors who first stepped food into abroad markets in 1972, is 8 thousand 606 and the total value of these projects has reached up to 312 billion USD. The last period has been one of the toughest of the 43 years, for the ‘Contracting Abroad Industry’. In 2014, 324 new projects have been taken over abroad which amount to the total value of 27 billion USD. Within the first 6 months of 2015, 69 new projects have been taken over abroad, which amount to the total value of 8.2 billion USD. The Chairman of the Turkey Contractors Union Mithat Yenigün expresses that alongside the economic and political developments in the world, the environment of uncertainty within Turkey effects the industry negatively, he continues with the following words, ”Once the political uncertainty is clarified the industry will continue its growth trend. It is vitally important that a brand new story is created for the Turkish Economy and that a motion plan is shaped. Our expectations are that new structural reforms in the economy are brought up in the last quarter of 2015 and that they are swiftly put into motion by the new government by the beginning of 2016.” Chairman of the Turkey Contractors Union Mithat Yenigün made statements exclusive to Ekovitrin, in regards to the industry’s 2015 performance and future goals. Chairman of the Turkey Contractors Union Yenigün: “Turkish Contractors take over yearly new projects abroad which are on average 25-30 billion USD worth. In 43 years, the total project number has reached 8 thousand 606, and the total value of these projects has reached 312 billion USD.” EKOVİTRİN SEPTEMBER 2015 157 INTERVIEW / UFUK UYAN NEWS / DİDİM BEACH RESORT HOTEL Kuwait Turk’s European expansion Europe’s first participation bank KT bank AG has been opened for service in Frankfurt by Kuwait Turk, it aims to reach 4 million European Turkish clients. Kuwait Turk’s General Manager Ufuk Uyan made the following statement, “We aim for the KT bank AG to reach 154 million Euros of active growth by the end of the year.” I n July you opened a new branch in Germany. What is the significance of Germany, in Kuwait Turk’s long run and short run goals? The detailed research done in the last year’s shows us that participation banking is on an upward trend in the world and in Europe. We had the opening of KT Bank AG as a first step towards introducing Europe with participation banking and its premier goal is; to provide full banking services to the European. As Kuwait Turk we received our license from the German Federal Banking Regulatory Authority BaF. With this license we became the first participation bank in Germany that received a license to realize deposit and loan operations. We perceive KT Bank AG as a door opening from Germany to all Europe, as a base. For us this location is the Europe Central base of participation banking. Through this location we plan to introduce all Europe with interest free banking and swiftly expand, in order to become a preferred spot. We will bring participation banking services to 4 million potential clients in Germany of which two thirds are Turks. We will constantly improve and develop our product and service portfolio which are in line with participation banking principles, in accordance with the expectations of clients here. We hope that KT Bank will be the preferred number one finance entity in Germany. With our branches in Germany we aim to provide banking services based on solid banking principles and ethical values. We aim to meet our local and foreign clients’ needs of investment and borrowing, with a premium service standard, advantaged prices and a wide range of products. We estimate that by the end of 2015 KT bank AG will be managing more than 10 thousand accounts. With these calculations the bank will have a total of 121 million Euros of deposits. The first half of 2015 was very successful. We opened our private banking services under a different directorship, through which we undersigned a first in participation banking. In Germany we started our operations with KT Bank AG. We diversified our financial resolutions for the pensioner and the married couples, though special campaigns. We improved our digital banking services and opened our ‘Your Bank digital banking platform’ to the service of our clients. We realized sukuk issuance for the public. Until the end of 2015 we will keep developing our private banking services and KT Bank AG’s portfolio. Also until the year end we will have a significant amount of sukuk issuance. In SME banking we are going through a new structural change, we are improving our banking services in this area. The successful work that we have done in 2015 has also reflected on the financial results of our first 6 months. Compared to last year’s same period we increased our net profit by 17,5% and made 206 million TL net profits. In the first half of 2015 we increased our total assets by 16.6% compared to the year end of 2014 and brought it up to 39 billion 661 million TL. We also raised our equity capital by 5.6 % and reached 3 billion 192 million TL. In the collected funds, again in comparison with the same period our bank achieved a 17% increase and reached 25 billion 913 TL and by realizing a 20.3% increase in fund usage our bank has provided 25 billion 609 million TL fund usage. We plan to increase our current 333 branches up to 360 by the end of the year. Our road map for 2016 is to concentrate on areas such as SME / artisan banking, portfolio management, digital banking.
