REPRO SPECIFICATION FOR DIGITAL ARTWORK FILES
File Formats
• Preferred File Formats (Print Ready Files)
To help ensure a smooth workflow and allow us to react quickly to your requirements, please supply
final artwork files in the following formats:
• Artpro
• Esko Normalized PDF
Suppliers are responsible for the quality control of approved print ready repro files supplied to
Benson Group. It is not the responsibility of Benson Group to conduct additional pre-checking or
any other quality control process prior to printing. Files supplied in this format are regarded as
fully approved and print ready, any errors on delivered items resulting from the file supplied will be
the responsibility of the repro house.
The file should be the final approved version, requiring no further amendments or alterations.
Any extra processes e.g. varnishes, embossing or foiling should be on clearly marked separate
layers within the file. Please see File Preparation for further guidance if required.

If files are supplied in the additional native file formats these can be converted for you once received.
If you require this conversion service please supply all additional components used in the design such
as fonts and image files etc.
All files should be supplied in the preferred file formats except by prior agreement.
Please note that deviating from the preferred file formats and submitting additional file formats
without prior agreement could result in substantial delays, files being rejected and result in
conversion charges.
• File Names
All files sent to Benson Group must be logically named. All files should be clearly named starting with
the customer product code. Please do not use filenames such as carton, tablets, cake, pizza, leaflet,
paracetamol etc. The following characters should be avoided in filenames: /\:*?”<>|
• File Submission
All files must be submitted within the agreed lead time using the agreed contractual method.
All submissions must be clearly identifiable stating what item they are for, the customer and where
appropriate the retailer. All notifications must always be sent to the internal sales contact as well as
any other departments. Failure to submit files in this manner could result in substantial delays and
may result in charges. File submission methods include:
• FTP
• CD / DVD
• USB Memory Stick

File Preparation
• Cutter Guide / Profile
Artwork must always be prepared to and contain an approved cutter profile supplied by Benson
Group. The cutter profile must not be altered in any way (including any apertures, cut outs, emboss /
deboss and universal braille blocks) without first obtaining approval from Benson Group as this could
incur additional tooling costs and possible production delays. The cutter profile should be set in
non-printing ink spot colour, suitably named (i.e. cutter or profile) and set to overprint. The cutter
profile should be on a separate layer clearly marked within the file and the Benson Group drawing
code clearly stated on the artwork / legend.
The approved cutter profile will be supplied in pdf format as standard but can be supplied in
numerous digital file formats on request.
Any amendments to the cutter profile provided (e.g. window aperture) must be requested in writing
through Benson Group’s customer. The amended drawing will then be supplied.
• Number of Colours
The maximum number of separations for printing inks must not exceed 6 colours. Additional
attributes such as varnishes, foiling, embossing and braille are applied using coating units or during the
converting process.
• Varnish & Varnish Free Areas
If your item requires varnish of any kind the artwork should always contain a varnish drawing set in a
non printing separation, suitably named (i.e. Matt or Gloss Varnish) and set to overprint. The varnish
should be on its own separate layer clearly marked within the file. If more than a single varnish is
required such as a Matt & Gloss, each of these should have their own layer and be clearly marked.
Guidelines for creating spot varnish artwork are:
• Minimum Text Point Size - 10 pt (Positive & Negative)
• Minimum Line Weight - 0.5 mm (Positive & Negative)
Light sans fonts will require an increase of the above numbers by 1pt.
Serif fonts should ideally be avoided but if are required increase numbers above by 1pt.
If any reversed out or varnish free areas are required within the varnish artwork please ensure these
are setup as a compound line.
• Images
All continuous tone or greyscale raster images must be high resolution at a minimum of 300 dpi at
actual print size (1:1 / 100%). Images above this resolution will be downsampled. Please make sure all
images are supplied as CMYK and special colours. RGB images are not suitable and will be rejected
or converted if requested. A colour shift may occur during conversion; therefore please avoid
supplying RGB files. Line-art or bitmap images should be at least 2400 dpi at actual print size (1:1 /
100%). All images should be saved as .psd or .tiff files and have no compression applied.
Please inform Benson Group if any Copydot elements are used within files as these can occasionally
RIP incorrectly.

• Fonts & Sizes
If all text is fully approved please convert all the text to outlines. This will prevent almost all font
problems. If however you may require any alterations to text then please supply any fonts used in the
preparation of artwork and also embed into any PDF file.
Due to licensing laws all fonts supplied will be disposed of after use.
Minimum point sizes for printability are:
• Positive: 5 pt (one colour text); 6 pt (multiple colour text).
• Negative: 6 pt (one colour knockout); 7 pt (multiple colour knockout).
Light sans fonts will require an increase of the above numbers by 1pt.
Serif fonts should be ideally avoided but if are required increase numbers above by 1pt.
Black text less than 10 pt should be set to overprint.
Text smaller than these point sizes may start to fill in making it difficult to read.
These specifications are guidelines for printability only and are not to be used in place of any
legislation that may cover the end use of the printed item. It is the responsibility of the repro supplier
to ensure all text meets any size requirements.
• Line Weights
Minimum printing line weights are:
• 0.10 mm - one colour solid.
• 0.20 mm - one screened colour, multiple colours or reversed out.
• Screens & Vignettes
Screens can be between 2% and 90%. Any screen above 90% is likely to become a solid and a screen
of less than 2% is likely to be too small to print. Vignettes can be between a minimum of 0% and a
maximum of 100% (white to solid).
• Transparencies & Masks
Transparencies and Masks (Inc CT Masks) are to be supplied intact and working. They are not to be
flattened.
• Emboss / Deboss
If embossing / debossing is required this should be set with its own separation and on its own layer
with both suitably named (i.e. Emboss). Please be aware if embossing / debossing has already been
used within a profile range on a previous design and is then moved for a new version this may incur
additional die tooling costs and possible production delays.
The minimum distance from a cut / crease line is 10 mm for a single pass though converting. If
embossing is required less than 10 mm it will require a double pass through converting.
If any reversed out areas are required within the emboss / deboss artwork please ensure these are
setup as a compound line.

• Foil Blocking
If foil blocking is required this should be set with its own separation and on its own layer with both
suitably named (i.e. Foil Blocking). Please be aware if foil blocking has already been used within a
range on a previous design and is then moved for a new version this may incur additional foil blocking
tooling costs and possible production delays.
Guidelines for creating foil blocking artwork are:
• Minimum Text Point Size - 8 pt (Positive & Negative)
• Minimum Line Weight - 0.5 mm (Positive & Negative)
Light sans fonts will require an increase of the above numbers by 1pt.
Serif fonts should ideally be avoided but if are required increase numbers above by 1pt.
If foil blocking is required over any metallic inks please reduce any linework (100% Tint) of the
metallic separation underneath the foil blocking to (15% Tint) with a 0.1mm pullback.
If any reversed out areas are required within the foil blocking artwork please ensure these are setup
as a compound line.
Foil blocking cannot be applied to the first 25mm of the printed sheet meaning it is essential to notify
Benson Group if any foiling is going to be required before any tooling is ordered as this will effect the
step & repeat sheet layout.
• Maximum Ink Coverage
To give the best print results it is recommended to keep the maximum ink coverage to no more than
300%. If you have any areas within your design which exceed 300% ink coverage, UCR (Under
Colour Removal) should be applied to reduce the ink coverage to an acceptable level.
• Bleed
Any part of the artwork touching a profile edge should be extended by 3mm outside the edge.
This Is referred to as "bleed". Bleed should also be extended by 3mm on to the glue seam or
aperture. If an image is used within the artwork and requires bleed please supply the full image so
that additional bleed can be added if required and the additional image is available for use.
• Margin / Distance From Cutter Profile
All text and graphic detail should be kept a minimum of 2mm away from any profile line.
• Spot Colours
All spot colours should be referenced with an appropriate Pantone (PMS) colour and should have a
‘C’ suffix for coated surface or ‘U’ for uncoated surface. We will use the appropriate ink reference
during printing, but please be aware that the final result will only represent a good commercial match
due to variation caused by the substrate used for the production of your order and any varnish or
coating applied. Special or "house" colours should be accompanied by an appropriate sample from
which a drawdown from our ink manufacturer will be produced for your approval. Please remove all
unused colours.

• Trapping / Grip
Spreads and chokes required to achieve the best printing results are 0.06mm.
Wherever possible ensure the trapping is on its own separate layer clearly marked within the file and
named something suitable (i.e. trap layer).
• Dot Gain (TVI)
All jobs must be supplied as a linear file with no dot gain compensation. Benson Group will apply the
appropriate correction during dot gain compensation through our RIP to suit the individual press
used in the printing process. Our target dot gains are in-line with ISO 12647-2 Curve A which are
detailed below for CMYK. The same dot gain targets are also aimed for when printing Spot Colours.
Target dot gains are as follows:
25% Tint - 9% TVI
50% Tint - 14% TVI
75% Tint - 12% TVI
• Bar Codes
If supplying a bar code, please make sure the bar code is generated following the guidelines published
by GS1 UK (www.gs1uk.org). These guidelines will provide you with information regarding the
suitability of bar code colours and background colour combinations.
On all bar codes a bar width reduction of -0.033 mm is required. Please ensure that the correct print
free area is incorporated around the barcode. If there is insufficient space for a full height bar code,
the bars can be truncated (i.e. cut off from the top) by up to 10mm or 37.5%.
The bar code should be generated at the required final size. Bar codes should never be reduced or
enlarged after generation and should never be scanned from another source.
If you do not have the facility to produce your own bar codes, our Repro Studio can generate most
types of code in-house and insert them in the final design for you. If you require this service, please
supply the following information with your artwork:
• Type of barcode: i.e EAN-13, UPC-A, Pharma code etc.
• Code number: Full code including check digit.
• Size of code: Range between 120% - 80% scale in 5% increments.
• Position: This should be indicated on a proof or within the digital file.
• LMI: Light margin indicator – Y/N.
• Colour: Please specify bar code colour and background colour required.

• Printing Whites (Metpol / Foil Substrates)
If a Printed White is required on a job please make sure the white is gripped back by 0.1mm in all
instances where it appears underneath another colour, this is so that if we get any spread on the
white on press it will not show on the print.
The printed white should be set with its own printing ink spot colour and on its own layer within the
artwork with both suitably named (i.e. Printed White).
• Printers Marks
For identification purposes we request that our house mark, specification reference and type number
be included on a portion of the profile that is not visible when the carton is made up, preferably a
dust flap.
Additionally to aid colour control through the printing process we may add colour control strips to
the glued hidden areas to enable measurements to be taken. Please inform us if you do not wish us
to apply these when you submit your artwork.
• Print Sequence
All jobs will be produced using the following sequence unless artwork specifically requires an
alternative such as printing on Metpol where a printed white would typically be on the first unit or
when using metallic inks.
Standard:
Black – Cyan – Magenta – Yellow – Spot – Spot
Metpol:
White – Black – Cyan – Magenta – Yellow – Spot
Metallic:
Metallic – Black – Cyan – Magenta – Yellow – Spot
• Screening (Conventional AM)
Unless otherwise requested we will use a screen of 175 lines per inch at a resolution of 2400 dpi and
use a Paragon Euclidean dot with the following screen angles:
Cyan 75º - Magenta 45º - Yellow 0º - Black 15º
Spot colours will be screened at the appropriate angle suitable for the specific job.
• Density
The standard target printing densities are:
Black 1.75 - Cyan 1.45 - Magenta 1.3 - Yellow 1.0

• Proofing
Proofs being supplied to Benson Group must adhere to the following:
Wet Proofs
• Standard print sequence of Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow
• Standard ink density K 1.75 - C 1.45 - M 1.3 - Y 1.0
• Stock and Varnish must be correct spec and exactly match that to be used for production
• Proofing must be certified to ISO 12647-2 Curve A / Fogra 39L
Other Proofs
• GMG certified proofs must conform to ISO 12647-7 tolerances / Fogra 39L target
Any type of proof must be 100% size and must be the final signed off version displaying the supplied
approved cutter profile and drawing code, any varnish, emboss areas or foiling (any extra processes).
Colour correct proofs must be supplied for all new designs accept where a signed off colour
standard is in place for special colours.
Where GMG proofs are supplied for colour they must include the certification sticker or print.
