The SalsaNor congress started in Stavanger in 2002, and over the years it has visited all the cities in Europe and Cuba in this list (to the right). Welcome also to our second official Rueda de Casino WADF World Championship! 5 teams will be competing for the WADF World Championship title in the finals Friday night. Again we have a very strong line-up with excellent artists, top international and national instructors and DJs, lead by the eminent Master of Ceremony Rohan Brown. The workshops offer 4 different Rueda levels, and we have extended our class schedule to two parallel non-rueda classes, including Kizomba, Rumba, Cuban body moves, Bachata, Afro-Beat, and more. The parties will have two dance floors, one mainly with Cuban salsa & rueda, and some son, bachata, reggaeton, etc, and one with kizomba/semba, with some bachata, afro-beat, kuduro, etc. New! Social dance with DJ in the lunch breaks and Saturday afternoon. And as you will see in this folder, we also have other news. We have a few more women than men attending the congress. However, the balance differs for the various Rueda levels. On Rueda E there are more leads than followers signed up, so Rueda E leaders are encouraged to also select some classes on other Rueda levels, to even the balance. We have also planned other arrangements to even the balance, including one class not requiring couples on all time slots, workshops for ladies, rueda workshops for one lead/two followers, invited guest participants in some workhops. We appreciate it if you will help evening out the balance by using the non-rueda workshops. Ábaco, the new dance from 2015, is now completed for the core of the Norwegian Rueda Standard! Learn it in workshops, and join Ábaco at the parties. Women are especially encouraged to try it! Thanks to all the volunteers who are willing to put in time and effort to make the Rueda Congress a great experience for everyone! We hope you will have a fantastic congress in Trondheim! Juan y Juanita contest, your favorite Congress Rueda figure 2016 2 Artists Aniversario 15 – Fiesta los QUINCE! Instructors, DJs, MC Welcome to the 15 years anniversary of the SalsaNor Rueda Congress. Our celebration of this milestone is inspired by the Cubans. When they are 15 years, they dress up in the most extravagant outfit, having a great meal, partying, taking photos and not least dancing the night away. If your dress is too much for the entire night, do as the Cubans .. The Saturday night Gala dinner and Fiesta los 15 will be inspired by this Cuban tradition, Quince. We will have the Cubans learn us a proper Quince dance, and there will be surprises! And a prize for the most Cuban quinceanera! Your favorite Rueda figure may be old, new, homemade, crazy, standard, whatever, BUT it has to be simple enough that we can all learn it fast and use it in a social Rueda. Everyone can nominate a figure during the weekend, and we will all have a quick voting at the Sunday Salsa Matinee, between 18-19, selecting the most popular Rueda figure. We will then all learn the figure and dance it in our social Rueda. To nominate a favorite figure you need: - a suitable Rueda figure with a suitable name - 3 couples to demonstrate the figure at the Sunday matinee (18-19) - to find Bernt and convince him that your Rueda figure is suitable, then sign up with him - before Sunday (picture on page 3) DJ Nelly CU/GE 33 DJ Delahoy UK DJ Piedra PE/NO DJ Flaca NO DJ Mariela NO DJ Casino NO If this works well, next year we will try to find place for the voting at an earlier party, before some has to start leaving for home. Let’s find out if your favorite congress Rueda figure 2016 will be a surprise, to you, to your Rueda friends or to your Rueda instructors! 12 Meals HOTEL BREAKFAST is included in your room, opening hours: Mon-Fri 06:30 - 09:30 | Sat-Sun 07:30 -10:30 STARTER VEGETARIAN STARTER Welcome to Friday daytime social, open to all participants. Rueda instructor’s choice The instructor’s favorite figures, maybe you will be surprised by something different than what you are used to..? Rueda de la calle (Street rueda) Fun rueda figures from the street. Fun stuff, not complicated salsa figures and structures. Rueda con estilo (Rueda with style) Focus on dancing rueda with nice Cuban style. Rueda por fuera (Rueda outward) Rueda danced outwards, not to the center. Very useful if you want to try Rueda llanta, and is commonly used in Rueda combo. Rueda con dos parejas Many small circles with only 2 couples in ecah rueda. Focus on figures for small circles. Very useful to know before trying Rueda llanta. Rueda cruzada Rueda with two different “groups” in the same circle, on different beat. Partner change only within the same group. A fun challenge. Rueda con Afrocubano / Rumba Rueda figures from traditional Cuban dances, rumba and Afrocuban dances. Rueda en linea (Rueda on a line) Rueda on a line, in stead of in a circle. Is that a contradiction – a linear wheel..? Find out. Rueda gemelas (Rueda twin) Two circles dancing the same figures in different order. It looks crazy! Rueda torno (Rueda lathe) This is a new Rueda and quite advanced structure where you enter various formations. All of a sudden you are in a Rueda llanta formation, and before you know it the Rueda forms a star. Recommended to try. Rueda confusion (Rueda confusion) 5 Rueda that involves frequent changes of leadfollow roles and alterations of timing. When “confusion” is called, the lead will change into follow and the follow will change into lead until return to regular Rueda. Rueda themes for experienced dancers: INT in the workshop schedule means intermediate level in the specific theme. If you don’t know the theme well already, please choose a different class, to give the experienced dancers a chance to improve. Rueda contratiempo – 2 levels Rueda in the timing used in Son. Expect some regular rueda figures danced in different timing. And maybe also some figures from Son. Rueda con dos mujeres – 2 levels Rueda where men dance with two women at the same time. You can dance surprisingly many standard figures this way. Fun, and at least as challenging for the women as for the men! Rueda llanta – 2 levels One big rueda consisting of many small twocouples ruedas. This involves dancing rueda por fuera and rueda con dos parejas, which must be known in advance. Changing partner is done both within the small and the big circles. Note the prerequisits. Rueda trébol – only INT level Similar to Rueda llanta, but Rueda trébol (clover) is based on small circles with 3 couples. Note: you need to know Rueda llanta to take this class. Please, respect the rueda levels B - improver C - intermediate D - advanced E - master You are welcome to attend classes on a lower Rueda level than you signed up for! Special RUEDA workshops Rueda de mambo This is mambo (not salsa), danced in Rueda. Mambo steps, figures and music! Rueda de cha cha cha This is cha cha cha (not salsa), danced in Rueda. Cha cha cha steps, figures and music! 10 SalsaNor events More information at salsanor.com NON-RUEDA workshops Rumba - with live percussion Traditional cuban dance, very useful in salsa and rueda. It helps you to improve the general quality of your dance. The Cubans love it! This year with live percussion! Afrocubano - Yemaya Afro-cuban moves from some of the orishas, chosen by the instructor. Very useful as body movement class and a great work-out session! Yemaya is one of the orishas. The characteristic moves is also used in Ábaco (in “patin”). AfroSalsa Elements from Afrocuban dances used in cuban salsa. It gives the salsa dancer a range of possibilities in improvisation to the music. Cuban body moves Focus on controlling and using your body in the dance, not only feet and arms. Cuban style. Salsa triples (Salsa with two women) Salsa where one man is dancing with two women at the same time. Cha cha cha A fun and stylish dance with roots in Cuba, closely related to salsa. The class is suitable for dancers already familiar with the basic salsa steps. Son Several elements in salsa dance and music come from Son. Son is danced contratiempo and is beautiful couples dance, easy to fall in love with. Pachanga Pachanga is a music genre, and the accompanying dance / dance movements originating from the 1950’s. Pachanga is still used frequently as mambo (salsa) music, and often you can see salsa dancers spice up their dance with pachanga steps. First weekend of September 2017 9 Kizomba Traditional Kizomba is an African dance characterized by close partner connection and smooth, grounded movement. There is no “basic step” after the fashion of ballroom dances, to be repeated continuously throughout the dance. Kizomba can be successfully danced with only four or five moves, and yet mastery lies in the subtlety of movement and of the lead-follow connection. The kizomba music springs from the semba tradition in Angola, inspired by other African music forms as well as Caribbean zouk. Semba Semba is a rhythmic form of music and dance from Angola. It is based on a firm stepping motion, rather like pushing into sand. The steps are fairly quick, and can be linear or move around the lead. It was born in the 20th century at the intersection of traditional African dance and colonial European influence. Semba music is one of the main contributors to kizomba music. Afro-Beat An energetic class to teach you some African moves to upbeat music and loosen up your body! Learn the moves, practise them and use them in a short choreography. Dominican Bachata This dance style originated in the Dominican Republic, and has roots in Cuban Son and Bolero. The dance is characterized by a relatively simple footwork, however its typical hip movements makes the dance challenging. Sensual Bachata This sensual version of the Dominican Bachata is characterized by very subtle, elegant and romantic movements. It was created in Spain about 12 years ago, and has since become a very popular dance worldwide. The music is slightly more commercial than salsa and cha cha cha. Ábaco (abacus) Rueda inspired line dance / salsa suelta! Last year we introduced a brand new dance, Ábaco! You dance inside the Rueda to the Rueda commands, similar dance figures, without a partner, on lines like a line dance. Ábaco has been in use in several cities since last year, and in 2016 we are completing the list of Ábaco figures to cover all the CORE figures of the Norwegian Rueda standard. Learn Ábaco in the workshops and join the Ábaco at the parties! 6 Workshop schedule Trondheim NO Please check master schedule at info desk for changes during the congress time Mesanin 2 room Friday Sep 2nd 16:00 - 17:00 B Rueda standard figures Pablo Rueda standard figures 17:15 - 18:15 B Yuleisy Saturday Sep 3rd 10:00 - 10:50 10:30 - 10:50 11:00 - 12:00 B Rueda con estilo Esteban Rueda new figures 12:15 - 13:15 B 13:15 - 14:15 14:15 - 15:15 Rohan Ethan Yohan Sunday Sep 10:30 - 11:20 11:00 - 11:20 11:30 - 12:30 4th B Rueda por fuera Pablo 12:45 - 13:45 B Rueda new figures 13:45 - 14:45 Yuliet Rueda standard figures 14:45 - 15:45 B 16:00 - 17:00 17:00 Tamba C Rueda dos parejas RLB Esteban C Rueda with hand signs Bernt D Rueda contratiempo Yohan D Rueda gemelas Reynaldo C D Rueda en linea N Warm-up - Merete (from 10:30) Rueda con dos mujeres 3 C D Rueda con afrocubano Esteban Cristian C Rueda por fuera RLB Tamba Pablo C Rueda con estilo Yuleisy Tamba D Rueda con musicalidad Yuleisy Yohan C Rueda new figures Esteban C Rueda contratiempo Mario D Rueda con dos mujeres INT 3 Bernt D Rueda de cha cha cha Mario N Warm-up - Merete (from 11:00) D Rueda new figures Yuleisy D Rueda llanta Reynaldo B C Rueda new figures Yohan 7 Mario E Rueda new figures Tamba E Rueda llanta INT Reynaldo E Rueda instructors choice Yohan E Rueda contratiempo INT Reynaldo E Rueda torno Jaro E Rueda con rumba Reynaldo E Rueda de mambo Esteban Lunch break / SOCIAL DANCE in the Lounge (1 hour) C Rueda instructors choice D Rueda confucion Rohan E Rueda con afrocubano Ethan D Rueda new figures Pablo SALSA MATINEE in the Lounge (from 17 to 23) = Only if you are intermediate/experienced in the specific theme = Only if you have danced Rueda llanta before = Useful before attending Rueda llanta = It helps if you enter (/ leave) this class in groups of 1 lead and 2 follows = Partner work E Rueda contrario Bernt E Rueda treból RLA Jaro 2016 Mesanin 1 Rueda E Lunch break / SOCIAL DANCE in the Lounge (1 hour) SOCIAL DANCE in the Lounge (1 hour) B C D Rueda de la calle San Siro 1 Rueda D B C D E Rueda classes. please respect the rueda levels N Non-rueda classes, open level classes or specified levels INT RLA RLB 3 PW San Siro 2 Rueda C B Rueda instructors choice C Rueda cruzada Rueda con tumbao 15:30 - 16:30 B 16:30 San Siro 3 Rueda B by SalsaNor Cuban Non-Rueda N Abaco intro Yuliet N Cuban body moves ladies Yuliet N Abaco new figures Bernt & Yuliet N Afrocubano - Yemaya Yuliet N Afrosalsa Yuliet N Son open level PW Reynaldo & Yuliet N Streching - Merete (20 min) N Salsa triples Rohan N Pachanga Go’foten Kizomba/Bachata N Kizomba open level PW Rohan N Kizomba lead / follow PW Ingrid & Sjur N Bachata Dominican PW Steeve N Kizomba intermediate PW Theo N Bachata sensual PW Ken N Afro-Beat Tamba N Bachata footwork Steeve N Kizomba tricks PW Theo Tamba Rumba N with live percussion Mario & Yuleisy N Streching - Merete (20 min) N Semba open level PW Theo N Kizomba fundamentals PW Cory If balance lead/follow is very uneven, we appreciate it if you also use the N classes (non-rueda).
