Why YDS?
YDS produces high quality footwear for the Military, Police,
Fire, Ambulance, Specialist Industrial and Postal markets
where there is a requirement for high specification footwear
to protect and provide a safe, warm and comfortable
encasement for wearers feet. The business stands for
QUALITY and invests in continuous improvement and the
world’s leading technology brands to make the highest
performing footwear.
When it comes to manufacturing footwear, YDS has forged an
industry edge due to its extensive history in military footwear
and the continuous development of innovative processes
that test for strength, durability and comfort. To keep a
step ahead from its competitors, YDS continues to invest in
world leading technologies such as GORE-TEX®, Coolmax and
VIBRAM. As YDS manufacturing capabilities and facilities
exceed such a high standard, YDS has the license to produce
footwear with GORE-TEX® membranes.YDS Boots use an
injection process that bonds the sole to the uppers, ultimately
giving the wearer a stronger, more durable boot when its
needed most on tough terrain and all weather conditions.
YDS have been successfully supplying military and security
forces with quality made boots and footwear since
1927. Today, YDS is now recognised as one of the largest
manufacturers and suppliers of military footwear worldwide,
producing over 10,000 pairs of boots and shoes every day.
YDS and WL GORE continue to work hard to develop footwear
so that all the components work together, giving the wearer
a quality system that offers 100% waterproofing and
breathability.
To ensure the YDS military boot with a GORE-TEX®
membrane is up to the task, it has to pass a 500,000 flex test
underwater implemented by WL GORE. This is the equivalent
of walking 50km; the membrane needs to pass this intensive
flex test to confirm its quality. There is no other waterproof
system that can offer this level of testing and assurance.

OrthoLite’s advanced proprietary polyurethane formula with
recycled rubber content delivers a combination of benefits
unmatched by any other insole manufacturer.
Long-Term Cushioning
Unlike traditional insoles, the compression set of OrthoLite insoles
is less than 5% over time so the cushioning and fit never change
inside the shoe, providing maximum comfort every time you put
your shoes on.

Choosing a Dual Density Injected Sole construction means you have a special application, for a job role that demands
long lasting high abrasion resistance performance, flexibility and comfort. The injection method that squeezes the
rubber material at high pressure into the sole mould at two different densities produces a permanent high strength bond
between the upper and sole as the two parts are combined.

Specialised Rubber Compounds
YDS produces many different rubber compounds mixed with chemicals to produce the best performance for the
application. The material has a heat resistance of 300C and benefits from having a long shelf life. There are different
formulas for improved slip resistance, weight, flexibility and use at different global temperatures. The rubber is formed
into long strands and injected into the sole mould using the latest DESMA technology robots.

The midsole is a lower density rubber compound that has been injected with air bubbles. This material provides flexibility
and shock absorption not found in direct vulcanized rubber soles. These properties increase ground contact for better
slip resistance, stability and also provides cold and heat insulation improving the overall performance of the footwear for
high risk applications.

The outer part of the sole unit is high density compact rubber material with high abrasion resistance, protecting from
nicks and cuts and durable properties lasting longer than PU alternatives.

THE LIGHT CHOICE:

Hydrolysis of midsoles are
not tested in accordance
with EN, we do this as an
additional check. The only
way to test this is from
plate material and not the
finished product.
This direct injected sole choice allows for
even greater flexibility and comfort from the
instant they are used. Designed for lower risk
lighter work roles PUR soles give the wearer superb
comfort and lightness with a high grip outsole. This sole
choice is suitable for those patrolling or inspecting over long
distances and who need a heat resistant and high grip outsole.
Materials
This sole construction uses a high grade Hydrolysis+ PU compound
designed to withstand the effects of hydrolysis breakdown which can occur
in PU soles. The rubber compound used for the outsole is mixed in house and
is formed into an outer skin ready to be combined with the midsole layer.
Midsole
The midsole is a soft PU compound. This material provides flexibility and shock absorption
and is lighter in weight. These properties increase ground contact for better slip resistance
and stability.

GORE-TEX® Footwear has to withstand up to 300,000 flexes (300 km/80 h) in ankle high water – no water
entry allowed into the footwear from the outside.This is much stricter than EN ISO 20345/347, which requires:
1) 1,000 Flexes / 15 Minutes (Trough Test) and
2) 4,800 Flexes / 80 Minutes (DynamicTest) while 3cm2 water entry is allowed.
GORE-TEX® Footwear has to withstand 240 turns/min in the centrifuge without showing any leakage.
Boots are filled with water and then spun at high speed. The huge centrifugal pressure will force the water out
of the shoe or boot if there is any weakness or faults in the waterproof construction. Continual production: 2%
of the daily production or three pairs of shoes per hour must be tested for 30 minutes. Prototype testing is for
60 minutes.

The Whole Boot Comfort Test measures the breathablity of the whole boot. The effect of an ‘sweating’ artificial
foot in the boot is simulated in a temperature controlled microclimate. The final climate comfort value of the
tested GORE-TEX® footwear is determined based on the degree of water vapour diffusion and water vapour
absorption of the boot.
