Genius director Patrice Chéreau didn’t live to see his great production of Elektra, previously presented in Aix and Milan, make it to the stage of the Metropolitan Opera. But his overpowering vision lives on with soprano Nina Stemme in the title role of a young woman on a primal quest for vengeance for the murder of her father, Agamemnon. The drama unfolds in a single act of rare vocal and orchestral power. In advance of Elektra’s Met premiere, Met General Manager Peter Gelb will moderate a discussion with Stemme and two of Chéreau’s long-time collaborators, set designer Richard Peduzzi and stage director Vincent Huguet. Concert Argento Chamber Ensemble Spectralism in America: Objets Trouvés Thu, May 19 at 7:30pm New York’s premiere virtuoso chamber ensemble presents a night dedicated to the legacy of French composer Tristan Murail. A pioneer of spectralism—a prominent movement in contemporary classical music that arose in 1970s France—Murail influenced a generation of composers in his mesmerizing style of early electronic music. The group will celebrate Murail’s incredible contributions to the musical landscape, performing works by the composer and his New York protégés.
