July 2014 Newmarket Public Library Newsletter Welcome to the July issue of the Library’s Newsletter Introducing the Library Summer Music Series! In This Issue Library Music Series at the Bandstand Summer Reading Program Themes, Guidelines and Dates for Adults, Teens and Kids Summer Hours Begin Saturdays 10-2 Fridays at 7 PM at the Bandstand Fiddling Thomsons July 11: Lively ethnic music from many backgrounds: cajun, zydeco, bluegrass, Celtic and more. Award winning father and son duo playing twin fiddles, wooden spoons, zydeco rubboard, and others Black Velvet Irish Band July 18: Authentic Irish tunes with energy and style. Four singer/instrumentalists performing mandolin, banjo, accordion, auto harp, drums, guitar, and singing. Sylvan Roots July 25: Acoustic trio playing well-known and more The library wishes you a Happy Independence Day! obscure roots music of the folk and blues tradition. Finger style rhythm guitar, 5-string banjo, percussion and vocals. Beautiful foliage in the pots beside the front doors planted by library trustee Joan DeYoreo. Summer Reading Program 2014 Important Dates and Times: Summer Hours start July 5: Open 10 AM to 2 PM on Saturdays in July and August. July 7 at 6 PM: Kick-Off with The Magic of Science! One hour interactive performance for children ages 5-12 about the science used by magicians to perform their tricks. Be ready for the audience to participate! This program is brought to you by a Kids, Books and the Arts grant.* Tuesday, July 8 at 10:30 AM: First “Fizz Boom Read” storytime for kids ages 3 to 5. Pick up an early literacy activity sheet to complete during the summer! Tuesday, July 8 at 3 PM: First “Fizz Boom Read” storytime for kids ages 5 to 12. Pick up a reading log to keep a list of what you read over the summer! Thursday, July 17 at 3 PM: Simple Machines. Develop superhuman strength through simple machines! Tuesday, July 29 at 10:30 AM: Bats! Friends in the Night Sky. The Center for Wildlife from Cape Neddick, Maine presents a program integrating ecology and natural history about bats, the only flying mammal that uses sonar technology and eats 1000 mosquitoes per hour! Learn more at this interactive presentation. Wednesday, August 6 at 6 PM: Pizza and Prizes Wrap-Up Party! Attend our finale for a chance to win the Grand Prize: a pass for 4 to Water Country! *Funding for the Kids, Books and the Arts event is provided by the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation, CHILIS, Cogswell Benevolent Trust, and is supported in part by a grant from the NH State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts as well as funds administered by the NH State Library and provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Kids ages 3 to 5: Pick up an early literacy activity sheet, bring your sheet to the library for a sticker and stamp for each completed activity! Join us on Tuesdays at 10 AM for storytimes. The Library’s ongoing programs include: Kids ages 5 to 12: Friends’ Book Sale: Second Monday of every month from 6-8 Pick up a reading log to record what you read over the summer. Bring your reading log to the library for a sticker and stamp. Join us Tuesdays at 3 PM for fun events. PM. This month it is on July 14. *Parents of 5 year olds may choose in which program their child participates. For teens ages 12/13 Spark a Reaction! to 17: For each book, graphic novel or audiobook you read, submit a brief book review online OR write your name and a short review on a review slip available at the library. Books & Coffee Adult Discussion Group: Friday from 10:30-noon. This month it is on July 25. We are reading Thinking Fast and Slow by David Kahnenan (non-fiction.) TWO SUMMER-READING-THEMED MOVIES: Thursday, July 10: A young inventor named Lewis travels back in time with a mysterious stranger. Thursday, July 24: A college professor invents an anti-gravity substance and must protect it from a corrupt businessman. This is a black and white Disney film.
