2009-2010 MAKING HISTORY AT MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
Over the last twelve months Mission San Juan Capistrano
continued to provide meaningful learning opportunities,
community and cultural events, one-of-a-kind experiences,
and served as a historic landmark welcoming people from all
over the world.
We welcome all who come in peace to return time and time
again to rediscover California history here, at Orange County’s
birthplace and only mission. Thank you for your support
during this past fiscal year.

The Mission Preservation Foundation
As a center for student education in social studies, over 52,000
students received a special day of hands on learning and left
with a new appreciation of history. As a place of inspiration,
many sought refuge in this place of peace for quiet reflection.
As a place of preservation, more accomplishments in the field
of preservation resulted in the extended livelihood of this
incredible landmark.

LASTING ACHIEVEMENTS AT MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
The Mission continued to make new history in 2009-2010 and the
following are highlights of some of the many things to celebrate.
- In the fall of 2009 this landmark expanded its role as a living history
museum and introduced its first traveling exhibit, “Gold Fever,” in
cooperation with the California Exhibit Resource Alliance (CERA).
Students enjoyed panning for gold, and seeing real life Gold Rush
era artifacts up close. Following the Gold Fever exhibit’s closure,
the Mission team curated a second traveling exhibit with an array
of outstanding items provided on loan by Zorro Productions, Inc.
- Preservation continued to flourish with work on the West
Wing completed in time to host the first ever traveling exhibit,
“Gold Fever,” under acceptable American Museum Association
standards.
- During the past year, founding Mission Preservation Foundation
President Tony Moiso stepped aside after serving on the Board
for over 12 years. While he will remain active on the Foundation
Board, he handed the reigns over to long time Mission supporter,
George O’Connell. The Board was also expanded to include an
additional highly anticipated new board member, Mr. Michael
Puntoriero of San Juan Capistrano.
- The Romance of the Mission 2009 Gala Committee hosted a
memorable evening featuring Benise raising over $450,000 in gross
revenue. Net funds were designated to support the Mission’s
museum and preservation efforts.
- In 2009-2010 record level funds were raised for the Adopt-A-Class
low income student scholarship program due to the generosity of
major supporters and friends who appreciate the value of learning
about history in this one-of-a-kind setting. With that support,
over 3,383 Adopt-A-Class students were able to visit the Mission
who otherwise might not have been able to do so. The cards and
letters sent by the participating “adopted” students generated
great excitement and served as motivation for the staff and the
Foundation to continue to raise funds for the purpose of student
scholarships.

LASTING ACHIEVEMENTS AT MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
- The Landmarks Club was established as the Mission’s official
planned giving program. By year end over 30 households had
joined as founding members, committing estate gifts as part of
their legacy. The original Landmarks Club of the early 1900’s had a
historic role in raising funds for the preservation of the Great Stone
Church, which still stands today as a result of their efforts.
by Father William Krekelberg, was generously underwritten
and made publicly available as a means of raising much needed
preservation funds. To date, the Mission Book continues to be a
top seller and a tool for supporting the Mission’s preservation with
1,112 books sold.
- The Mission’s Education Program was expanded to provide
two new “student and parent friendly” resource books featuring
information on all of the California missions. Resource books sales
were unexpectedly brisk and caused the temporary shutdown of
the Mission’s official website. $8,635 was generated through the
sale of our resource books.
- Membership in the Mission Preservation Society grew by 39% with
funding generated directly supporting much needed preservation
work throughout the grounds.
- The existing five language audio tour “Voices of the Past”
program was expanded to six languages and now includes an
Italian version.
- Free Teacher Admission Day was introduced, along with weekend
panning for gold, and Curiosity Cart “make and take” items free to
visitors.
- A new website was introduced and has increased website traffic
by 275% with over 23 million annual visits. Social media strategies
successfully raised awareness of the Mission and especially
generated more support from teachers and parents taking a tour.
The Mission shared its progress in marketing with the local business
community in two downtown merchant outreach breakfasts. At
these meetings staff reviewed attendance trends and identified
partnership and marketing opportunities.
These are just a few of the exciting accomplishments of the 2009-2010
fiscal year. We look forward to making more history throughout
this coming 2010-2011 year with the keen awareness that Mission
San Juan Capistrano continues to serve as home to many, including
the weary traveler, the faith-filled, the lifelong Californian, the
student, the romantic, and generations of all ages.

Home to Events and Experiences that Create Lifelong Memories
The Mission proudly hosted a busy 2009-2010 calendar of
events providing many opportunities for the public to enjoy
wholesome and meaningful experiences right here in San Juan
Capistrano with friends and family. From the world famous
“Annual Return of the Swallows”, Mariachi Festival, summer
Music Under The Stars concert series, annual Romance of
the Mission benefit gala to Christmas at the Mission, there is
something to do every month at Orange County’s only mission.
People of all backgrounds, generations, and faith traditions
enjoyed the opportunity to experience culture and celebration
in an unparalleled setting.
Mission” activities such as the adult audio tour, student audio
tour, Curiosity Carts, Garden Tours, Native American basket
weaving demonstrations, private guided tours, Welcome Video,
Plein-Air Art Reproductions Exhibition from the collection of
Mrs. Joan Irvine Smith and the Irvine Museum in the Soldiers
Barracks Gallery and more. In 2009-2010 the entire site was best
defined in one word - “experience”.
In 2009-2010, over 330,000 experienced the Mission in one of
these unique ways, and each left with a lifelong memory to
cherish.
In addition to the signature events, Mission San Juan Capistrano
continued to expand its offering of unique “always at the

HOST TO TRAVELING EXHIBITS
In the fall of 2009, the Mission expanded its identity from historic
landmark to historic landmark and museum, marking the
opportunity for visitors to enjoy traveling exhibits in addition
to the historic landmark. Audiences of all ages related well
to the storytelling provided by the exhibits. This new feature
generated greater appreciation and attendance.

background. The Mission’s summer crowds enjoyed learning
about the famed Zorro character and his origins. Over 39,000
visited the exhibit from late May to early September.
These two exhibits together paved the way for continuing the
traveling exhibit program as part of the Mission’s effort to
showcase many points of view on history and American culture
as well as offer renewable experiences “outside” of the Mission
context to generate interest, support, and curiosity as to what is
being hosted next.
The first traveling exhibit, “Gold Fever,” was curated in

impact on statehood as a result. Following the “Gold Fever”
exhibit’s closure, the Mission team curated a second exhibit

a new level of design combining a theatrical setting with the

For every student, the Mission provides an opportunity to instill
respect for history, architecture, old buildings, diversity, and an
appreciation of different faith traditions. This last year, our team
approached its responsibilities knowing that the entire field trip
experience may also provide a lesson in patriotism. Mission educators
and partners worked to cultivate an appreciation of what earlier
generations accomplished.

The hundreds of letters from happy students sent to Mission staff,
docents, and donors were testimony that the field trip was more than
a chance to get out of school. It was an opportunity to engage them.

EDUCATION - INSPIRED LEARNING AT THE MISSION
The Education staff of the Mission and its partners (such as
the Discovery Science Center, Ocean Institute, and Journeys
to the Past) took tremendous pride in motivating and teaching
over 52,000 students to care about history and the past from
which they came. The Mission’s volunteer docents generously
provided 26,143 fourth grade students with guided tours. The
Gardening Angels also provided summer garden experiences
as well as Garden Tours. Members from the Juaneño Band of
Mission Indians also provided basket weaving demonstrations
for students to appreciate the traditions of their people.
In all, visiting teachers and their students rated Mission San Juan
Capistrano with an overall “A” with many reporting that their
field trip experience was one to be remembered for a lifetime.
The careful arrival and artful teaching of so many children from
October, 2009, through June, 2010, remained a top priority for
everyone working at the Mission.

PARTNERS AND PROGRAMS IN EDUCATION
The Adopt-A-Class Scholarship Program
Mission San Juan Capistrano also continued to find ways
to ensure that access for student field trips to low income
students remained available through its Adopt-A-Class
Scholarship Program. In 2009-2010 education programs were
enjoyed by the under served of Southern California through
the support of private donors. This donor supported field trip
program received $31,976.51 to provide 3,308 students with
free admissions, docent guided tours, Passport Explorers,
transportation, and participation in an education program
class during the 2009-2010 school year. It was a year when
children especially needed this kind of support.

programming helps to keep the Mission around for the next
generation of students, so thank you!
Mission San Juan Capistrano offers award winning audio
tours in multiple languages and also provides educational
“passport” booklets, engaging exhibits, and Living History
Day, featuring volunteers dressing in period attire. Students
and parents will also find information about all of the
missions in the California Missions Resource Studio, free
with admission. There are “free with admission“ weekend
and summer time student activities, as well as numerous
free resources on the website, all designed to extend the
class room learning beyond the field trip experience. All of
this educational programming complies with the 4th grade
California Social Science Content Standards, (4.2 #5).

Every year, over 50,000 students visit Orange County’s only
historic mission to learn about California history and all of

In 2009-2010 over 330,000 visitors were greeted by a smiling face,
assisted by a caring person, and guaranteed to have a quality
visit and experience. As part of its recruitment process, the
Mission leadership seeks to attract and retain caring and talented
stewards who will invest generous amounts of time to ensure
that Orange County’s premier landmark remains just that.
From Guest Services specialists, to site work and preservation
specialists, to event planners, there are many different types of
Mission employees. However their differences, they all share
one thing, they recognize their role as stewards.

and support to make these projects possible.
While there are more milestones along the way with the pending
relocation of the Gift Shop space to the street corner and the
much needed preservation on the Mission’s oldest, and most
original buildings and artifacts, one thing is guaranteed, the
Mission team will work together to protect and ensure that the
landmark continues to shine.
People always say “it’s so peaceful, it’s so beautiful – it must
be easy to work here.” The answer is that “it takes 36 special
and dedicated people, many passionate volunteers, and a lot
of supportive friends to keep it that way.” By the way, “It’s not
easy, but it’s a privilege to do so.”
What the team has achieved in the area of stewardship of the
historic buildings, organization of the artifacts, improvements
and upgrades to the museum setting, as well as restoring the
religious significance of the site are impressive accomplishments

averaging over 563 hours a month to keeping the Mission a
vibrant place of inspiration, education and preservation.

PRESERVING CALIFORNIA’S HISTORY
Preservation is a top priority for Mission San Juan Capistrano.
As the art and science of historic preservation has developed,
efforts must more carefully reflect respect for the past and in all
ways be reversible, and be based on careful thinking of the past
treatments applied to buildings and artifacts. Future generations
of preservationists must have access to well maintained records
so that they know how to carry on the future preservation
projects. Preservation is defined as the stewardship of this site
and its structures. Preservation also means sharing information
with the public to generate a learning opportunity on how to
steward the site and prescribe treatments that allow for future
generations to enjoy the Mission. Part of the preservation effort
requires managing events so that they do not generate damage.
Preservation also involves sharing information about the site, or
interpreting the site so that those who visit, leave with a deeper
appreciation for various significant points in California history.
Preservation of the Mission is funded entirely by private
donations, membership, or grants. Income from the gate
admissions do not fund the preservation of the site, but rather,
keep the Mission open for the public. This makes all of the
accomplishments from the past year even more meaningful,
when it is realized that gifts and donations directly translate into
a measurable, immediate difference on the Mission grounds that
will be appreciated for generations to come.
