Meetings dates and locations are also is listed on the district website www.mtsinai.k12.ny.us Appointments Attendance Regular attendance and punctuality are vital to the educational well-being of each child. Parents are urged to ensure that each child attends school regularly and arrives at school on time. You are also asked to inform the school if your child is to be absent or late. Parents of Elementary School students should notify the school nurse at 870-2641. Parents of students in grades 5-8 should call the Middle School Main Office at 8702700. Parents of students in grades 9-12 should call the High School Nurse’s Office at 870-2822. In all instances of absences or tardiness, a note must be forwarded immediately to the homeroom teacher stating the reason. Do not send your child to school so early that he or she will arrive before the scheduled opening time. We request that children remain at home rather than play in unsupervised areas. Attendance Regulations The State Education Department requires the teacher to keep an accurate record of every student’s attendance during regular school hours. Such records must show the true cause of absence. For this reason, all students are required on their return to school to bring written explanations from parents or guardians in every case of absence or tardiness. Please consult the District’s Attendance Policy contained in the student handbook for further specifics and your responsibilities in this regard. In order to avoid delay, it is suggested that you make an appointment prior to visiting the school. A note or a phone message to the person you wish to see will ensure your desired meeting. Under ordinary circumstances, you would call either the building principal, a guidance counselor or the school nurse. In most cases, the questions that arise concerning the student can be easily clarified by an early meeting between the parent and teacher. These conferences, of course, are encouraged. Inspection of Facilities In order to maintain a productive learning environment for the students, each year our facilities undergo a number of inspections with the purpose of ensuring the health and safety of the students and the physical integrity of the school buildings. Among the inspections that take place annually are: Compliance with fire code regulations Community Use of Schools Building/Field use forms are available at each school office and on the district’s website. No group will be permitted to use the facilities without written approval from the District. Fire Alarm testing Fire drills Evacuation drills Fire extinguishers check for pressure and chemicals. AED A structural engineer completes a structural inspection of all the buildings each year, and certified inspectors also complete asbestos inspection. These reports are available through a Freedom of Information request. Visitors To ensure the safety of each student in our care, we insist that all visitors obtain a pass from the school office. There can be no exception. We are certain that you understand our concern and will cooperate with District procedures. Dress Code SCHOOL BUS SAFETY TIPS Handbooks The student/parent handbook with the District’s “Code of Conduct” booklet can be found on the district website under each school (www.mtsinai.k12.ny.us). It includes important notifications such as the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act. Please review the handbook(s) so that you are fully aware of all the necessary information. If you have any questions, contact your child’s building principal. While waiting for the bus…. DRESS CORRECTLY — Wear bright, visible colors, avoid dangling drawstrings or things that could catch. BE ON TIME — Leave home early enough to avoid having to hurry. STAY OUT OF THE ROAD — Wait in a safe place. Watch for traffic. Stay away from strangers. WAIT FOR THE BUS TO COME TO A FULL STOP — Board safely. Don’t shove or push. Sit down! On the Bus…. KEEP THE AISLE CLEAR KEEP YOUR HANDS INSIDE THE BUS LEAVE THE BUS DRIVER ALONE STAY IN YOUR SEAT Getting Off the Bus…. WALK AT LEAST 10 STEPS AHEAD OF THE BUS ALONG THE EDGE OF THE ROAD WAIT UNTIL THE BUS DRIVER SIGNALS YOU TO CROSS TELL THE DRIVER IF YOU DROP ANYTHING NEVER REACH UNDER THE BUS! As a school community, we must accept the fact that social demands and activities will determine our mode of dress. Our student councils, the faculty, and the administration are of the opinion that if we are to maintain a good educational atmosphere in our schools, there must be a reasonable standard of acceptable dress. In keeping with this objective, the school administration will not condone dress or grooming on the part of the student that is detrimental to safety and health or is distractive or disruptive to learning. We recognize that parents have the basic responsibility for appropriate dress and grooming, and as such, their aid is earnestly solicited in helping to create a favorable “dress appearance” among the students of our school district. The administration expects, therefore, that students dress in a manner consistent with the District’s Code of Conduct located on the district’s website. Once there, you will be able to choose how and where you receive messages from the schools. We encourage everyone who has not yet registered to log on and do so. A copy of this AMP is available for your review and or inspection at the district’s facilities office and the main office of each school building.
