While the company’s core competence is in mining and refining platinum, it facilitates and invests in developing markets for platinum group metals, with a focus on local beneficiation. The competition showcases not only the beauty of platinum, but also the remarkable talent of our local designers. This year, we looked beyond our borders to the worlds’ second-largest platinum jewellery market for inspiration – India. STUDIO C Chris van Rensburg The Indian tradition of ornate bridal jewellery dates back thousands of years and remains an integral part of that county’s lifestyle and culture. It is renowned for its visual appeal and whereas gold jewellery dominated designs in the past, modern brides are moving towards innovative designer jewellery made from platinum, true to tradition, yet contemporary in design. Keith White Design The Magnificent Seven provided an opportunity for some of South Africa’s leading platinum designers to create a collection using up to 300 g of platinum for the Indian bridal couple of the future. JACK FRIEDMAN JEWELLERS Oliver Green of Technology NIEMAN JEWELLERS 4th place and Winning Collection Magda Nieman with Brendan Cloete and Sanet de Lange, Angelique Anderson Dorathea Annandale and Tshwane University of Joy Massyn Abram Mathabatha, ANDREAS SALVER Andreas Salver Technology Honourable Mention In celebration of South Africa’s abundant mineral wealth and, in particular, the beauty of platinum, the theme for PlatAfrica 2015 challenged both professional and student designers to create platinum jewellery for the bridal couple that would be simple, yet meaningful, modern, yet respectful of tradition and elegant, yet making a statement. A futuristic professional showcase was also launched this year. In celebration of Metal Concentrators’ 25th anniversary, the Magnificent Seven provided an opportunity for some of South Africa’s leading platinum designers to create a collection using up to 300 g of platinum for the Indian bride of the future. Platinum jewellery remains one of the most sought-after items and South Africa supplies approximately 80% of global demand for this rare metal. The competition is designed to give local students and professionals the opportunity to work with it. Students not only benefit from personally handling platinum and learning about its strengths and capabilities, but also develop the skills required for designing and manufacturing it. The quality and creativity of this year’s pieces truly reflect South Africa’s talent and passion for platinum design. Vuyiseka Luke Cape Peninsula University of Technology SPONSORSHIP ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Without the generous support of Anglo American Platinum and Metal Concentrators, this competition would not be possible.
