The last several years were characterized by
booming markets and tremendous growth.
PALFINGER saw itself breaking one fiscal
record after the next. Yet the financial crisis,
together with its repercussions for the real
economy, has now brought this upswing to

Our firm commitment to research & development as well as our
cooperation with universities have created the basis for countless
patents and innovations. PALFINGER currently has 62 active patents.
In 2008, 11 additional patents were filed to protect technological
developments and custom-designed product figurations. The strategic
focus of PALFINGER’s R&D lies in the enhancement and evaluation
of high-strength fine-grained steel, new light-weight construction
materials, electronics, sensor devices, and ergonomics.
From the basic concept to the finished standard product
In each of its market segments, PALFINGER strives for leadership
in technology and market position. “The highest quality at competitive prices” is the declared aim. Through series production in large
volumes, PALFINGER can accommodate aspects of material technology and design that “smaller” manufacturers cannot match for
reasons of capacity and cost. Large volumes, modern production
technologies, modular designs, and synergies with other product

Köstendorf Competency Center
At the new research and development center in Köstendorf, we are
primarily interested in topics that involve optimizing loading cranes
in terms of weight and selection of material, functionality, and ergonomics. Numerous “clever minds” are tirelessly at work here on hydraulic and electronic innovations, conducting trials, and constructing
prototypes.
The competition may not be standing idly by, yet the technological
leader in the development of loading cranes can be no one else but
PALFINGER.
The cornerstone of a reliable and successful product can be found in
construction. Finite Elements calculations guarantee an optimal ratio
of crane weight to performance.
New ideas get discussed and implemented daily. That’s because we
want to make the loading crane business as economical and sustainable as possible.
Looking behind the “development” scenes reveals that innovations
and improvements don’t just happen by accident. PALFINGER
understands that they can thrive only within a precisely defined
innovation process. Development teams thus allow themselves ample
time as they begin their preliminary investigations, detail their developments, and produce their spec sheets. Central concerns include

the implementation of market demands, an optimal price-performance
ratio, and the improvement in the power-weight ratio (ratio of dead
weight to lift moment) – all the while taking into consideration the
experience of those involved in production and assembly.
Our goal is to have our individual crane models, with their various lift
moments, align perfectly with the market while simultaneously using as
many of the same parts as possible. With this modular form of construction, main components differ only in their metal gauge and can be
manufactured on the same production facilities. As an additional advantage, any one stronger component can be used as a spare part for several
crane models.
Standardized components, such as pistons and fittings for cylinders,
hose trays, etc., become factory-standard at PALFINGER and serve as
the basis for all future crane construction. We also place great value on
the compatibility of spare parts. Components used in new models are to
be suitable for use in earlier models as much as possible. If necessary, the
cranes are also to be upgradeable after delivery to the dealer or customer.
Producing equipment so that nothing can be added or omitted. That is
the art of good design. Good design can only be learned through hard
work. Through dialog. With a team. Always on the look-out for something new while keeping maximum functionality in mind. No sooner
said than done. That’s exactly what we took to heart when developing
the new High Performance cranes.
Numerous functional design elements that increase comfort and safety
were created to upgrade the new cranes. Specifications worked out
together with industrial designers were thus made ready for production
by our teams and in close cooperation with our synthetics suppliers.

Testing and prototyping
Any construction and testing department needs a highly motivated and
experienced development team if extensive and complex development
plans are to be implemented within a tight time schedule. The employees
all have to give their best in order to develop “the best loading crane” in
collaboration with all departments involved.
The testing and prototyping divisions at the Köstendorf competency center are constantly at work on product enhancement. Both theoretical
knowledge and, of course, all available on-the-job experience is incorporated into the development process, comprised of numerous analyses and
test procedures, that is undertaken to optimize materials.
Simulations on diverse test benches and testing procedures such as field
and endurance tests, DMS and impulse measurements, as well as transport simulations all represent real stress on crane components within a
“lab setting” that recreates reality.
From the very first sketch to production and visions of tomorrow –
developments at PALFINGER are an evolutionary, ongoing, and fluid
process. In fact preliminary investigations are already underway for
our next generation of cranes. ❚

Moosmair, a company located in the South Tyrol town
of St. Martin in Passeier, was founded by Andreas
Moosmair in 1993 as a one-man business for smalltime bricklaying jobs. Fifteen years later he has a staff
of over 20 people. At his disposal is also an enormous
fleet of special machines, devices and equipment that
are employed in a broad spectrum of related construction projects, such as cable cars, antenna towers,
hydroelectric power plants, and avalanche barriers.
Perfection

“Our specialized team offers turnkey solutions for construction projects
that test the limits of machines and their operators. We plan, design,
construct, assemble, and generally carry out our jobs in almost impenetrable terrain and under the toughest conditions,” is how Andreas
Moosmair explains an average day on the job.
“Complex assignments require individual solutions. With our knowhow we’re able to fulfill the requests and ideas of our clients immediately. Our name stands for utmost performance and absolute reliability.
We aim for perfection. In terms of technology, we’re always at the forefront. Because we can guarantee quality only when machines, procedures, and operators work together successfully. That’s why since May
2008 we’ve been relying on the technology, precision and versatility of
the PK 150002 Performance loading crane for our transporting, lifting
and assembly needs.” ❚

Courage for these new times
In days like these, it’s nothing short of a blessing to be able to report that
companies are still optimistic for the future and investing in their businesses, instead of sticking their heads in the sand. With its purchase of
five new PALFINGER loading cranes, the Vienna transport company
Haider has sent a clear and confident message that it intends to keep on
expanding.
“Over the course of running my business, there have always been good
and tough times. And yet it’s always been during economically difficult
phases that we’ve been able to take the lead over our competitors. Not
getting overconfident during the boom times and always remaining
dedicated to client concerns – that’s been our motto and the basis for
our uninterrupted business even in the face of downward economic
trends,” states Franz Haider.
The first of the five new cranes, a PK 100002 Performance, was delivered
to Haider at the end of 2008. The remaining four, a PK 29002 Performance,
a PK 23002 Performance, a PK 18002 Performance and a PK 12001 EH
High Performance, rolled off the line one after the other over the course
of this year, all ready for action.

Haider Transporte’s fleet of vehicles now has a total of 30 PALFINGER
cranes that cover the entire spectrum of loading crane capacity from 9 to
150 meter-tons. All the vehicles, which are outfitted with the company’s
corporate design, demonstrate utmost professionalism right from the
start. Competent advice, punctuality and dependable performance are
not just empty phrases for Haider Transporte – they are words the company lives by.
“For 17 years the only cranes that have been mounted on our vehicles
are PALFINGER. Their products and services work and whenever there
is a problem, it gets fixed right away. That’s how I’ve become a more
satisfied customer with each passing year,” states Franz Haider, describing his partnership with PALFINGER and KUHN.
“The collaboration with Haider Transporte, which began in May 1992,
the same year I started at KUHN Ladetechnik, is marked by a special
sense of devotion and brand loyalty. And beyond that, a very good
friendship has even developed over the years,” states Peter Wiedemann,
branch manager of Kuhn Servicewerk in Achau, Austria. ❚

The region of Taranaki on New Zealand’s North Island contains natural
gas and methanol fields, both on land and in the Tasman Sea, that provide
nearly all of New Zealand’s energy needs. The petrochemical industry thus
ranks alongside agriculture and dairy as one of the most important economic sectors of the region.
Warner Construction Ltd., with headquarters in Waitara, has established
itself as a renowned construction and maintenance company within all
of these sectors. Providing a full range of solutions, from planning and
construction to transport and assembly services, has made the company
an indispensable partner for implementing projects regarding industrial
and infrastructure facilities.
In the spring of 2009 Warner Construction was put in charge of the
construction of a 3.5 kilometer pipeline running from Engergy’s Omata
Tank Farm to the Taranaki port. Playing an important role in the transportation and installation of the gas pipeline is the latest acquisition to
Warner’s fleet – a commanding Prime Mover together with a PK 36002
Performance.
Alan Warner discusses why he decided to bring a PALFINGER on
board: “The job specifications for the new vehicle were clear. Since the
crane was going to be used for numerous construction projects, assembly work, and also for transporting mobile workshops, we were looking
for a flexible, safe, and reliable truck-crane combination. The people in
charge at PALFINGER New Zealand convinced me of the appealing
weight-performance ratio of the PALFINGER crane. And the endless
slewing system and remote control were technological extras that sealed
the deal. All in all, in comparison to other providers, the “PALFINGER
package” definitely won out.” ❚

With its 4th PK 100002 Performance delivered this March, Meister, the
crane and heavy-duty transport company from Dieburg, Germany, now
possess no less than 12 PALFINGER loading cranes! The new PALFINGER
was mounted on a 4-axle, full-air suspension Scania truck, just as the
company’s three previous 100002 models were. Baitz, the regional
PALFINGER partner, has been successfully assisting Meister for years
in the area of “custom bodies”.

The heavy-duty transport firm, which more than lives up to its name as
a veritable “meister” hauler, also has a PK 150002 Performance. With
such heavy-duty PALFINGER pros to rely on, Meister serves the entire
Rhine-Main-Neckar region with crane services, machine transport, and
company relocations. Another department handles the disassembly and
reassembly of prefabricated steel construction elements and complex
facilities both domestically and internationally. Since all vehicles in the
loading crane sector have been outfitted with remote control and a flyjib capable of angling upwards, working in large halls under tight conditions is now a snap.
The proud fleet of vehicles was expanded this May by yet another
PALFINGER PK 1500002 Performance. The lifting capacity of PALFINGER’s
largest loading crane is comparable to a 50 to 60 ton truck-mounted
crane. Its lifting height of 35 meters is equivalent to roughly 12 to 14
stories! And since the crane is also equipped with a fly-jib, it can negotiate projecting edges of up to 8 stories (21 meters).
As with all other Meister cranes, it is also employed beyond the RhineMain-Neckar region. Showcase projects in Switzerland – installations of
large glass surfaces and staircases – as well as med-tech projects in the
Czech Republic, England, and France reveal just how the company is
branching out. ❚

It’s Tuesday, April 21, at 6 a.m. Before the day gets going and swarms of
people from all over the world converge on Salzburg’s most famous
street, all deliveries must be completed in what soon becomes the city’s
pedestrian zone. That means there’s barely enough time to get everything where it needs to be. Especially when the destination is a butterfly
roof of a 4-story building in the city center and the delivery items consist of construction materials for renovating a copper roof.
A tricky undertaking, to say the least. When there’s not much room and
not much time, what you need is a professional and well-rehearsed team.
Vehicle, crane, and crew arrive at the scene sporting PALFINGER’s and
Perwein’s matching red company colors. The vehicle is skillfully maneuvered into place millimeter by millimeter and then stabilized. The crane
then gets put into operating position. Controlled by remote from the
roof, the crane and fly-jib are precisely operated.Wooden slats, pallets,
and rolls of copper are all lowered onto the roof right on target.
Perwein, the renowned company specializing in roofing, sheet metal,
and façades with headquarters outside of Salzburg, employs approximately 35 people. In its roofing and sheet metal divisions, Alois Perwein’s
team works in the city and state of Salzburg as well as in bordering
states. For its façade work, Perwein has been commissioned, in collaboration with well-known architects, throughout all of Austria and in
neighboring countries.
A PK 56002 has graced Perwein’s vehicle fleet since 2006. The PALFINGER
replaced a crane from the competition that, according to Perwein, often
had problems that led to painful downtimes at construction sites. “Since
fine-tuning the remote control of our PALFINGER crane, business has
been running smoothly and to our complete satisfaction,” states Alois
Perwein.
Professional jobs demand professional tools. Equipped with remote
control and numerous accessories (fly-jib, grab for laying roofing gravel,
workman basket for service and façade work, pallet fork, belt and
chains), the crane takes complete and optimal care of all of a roofing
and façade company’s needs. ❚

PALIFT hookloaders
premiere in Bahrain
Due to the tremendous commitment of our authorized PALFINGER
partner Almoayyed & Sons, the first two PALIFT T20 hookloaders –
mounted on 3-axle Nissan diesels with a maximum permissible total
weight of 26 tons – were delivered to Bahrain at the beginning of the
year.
The customer is none other than the Golf City Cleaning Company
(GCCC) – the largest waste management firm in Manama, the capital
of Bahrain.
In addition to the two hookloaders, the truck fleet was also upgraded
with six compactors. Adrian Cockrem, fleet manager at GCCC, is convinced that the new waste management concept will soon be exceeding
everyone’s expectations. Up until now, all large waste management companies in Bahrain – including GCCC – had only been using skiploaders.
Prior to delivering the trucks, Almoayyad conducted all necessary technical, safety, user, and service training.

Peaceful missions
Since 1993
The United Nations peacekeeping forces are active around the world
together with roughly 12,000 vehicles. A portion of these vehicles are
deployed in the desert or high in the mountains – in other words, under
extreme climatic conditions and in regions providing little infrastructure. That means, of course, that the vehicles must be rugged and flexible for numerous kinds of jobs.
Since 1993 GUIMA PALFINGER, in cooperation with Renault Trucks,
has been delivering reliable equipment in the form of skiploaders for
handling up to 20 different deployment modules. With lightning speed
the white trucks are transformed into mobile workshops, mountain
or waste management vehicles, or transporters of water, oil, and other
supplies.
Meanwhile, in addition to the handling systems, more and more
PALFINGER loading and handling products are being used on small
trucks. In 2009, for example, 14 vehicle units, equipped with PALFINGER
loading cranes and BISON PALFINGER access platforms, will be delivered to the United Nations.

Let there be light
Utility company burning for BISON PALFINGER
Verbund is Austria’s largest supplier of electricity. VERBUND-Austrian
Power Grid AG (APG) is its independent grid company. It operates the
country’s largest supra-regional high-voltage grid with voltage levels of
110 kV, 220 kV and 380 kV and is also responsible for the planning,
management, maintenance, and expansion of the grid. A total of
6,900 kilometers of power lines are currently installed on approximately
12,000 pylons across Austria.
Without a doubt, the main focus of APG is to provide safe electricity.
In order to do so, its employees must be able to head out night and day,
regardless of the weather, to service and repair the company’s infrastructure. And the only way they can do that is with the best equipment.
That’s why, on October 16, 2008, another vital instrument was added to
APG’s “toolbox”: a BISON TKA 35 KS access platform is now ready and
waiting for duty.
Heribert Pölzl from Verbund APG explains his choice: “The TKA 35 KS
stands out due to its extremely large lateral outreach and the ability to
move it when retracted. That allows us to safely maneuver under power
lines and position the access platform exactly where we need it.” Other
advantages are: a toolbox integrated across the entire length of the body
with a specially designed weather-resistant cabinet for stowing work
material, and a workman basket that can be rotated 90° in two directions. The basket also comes equipped with an integrated compressedair outlet and a hydraulic generator that supplies the basket with electricity independent of external sources.
Bavarian town of Bad Reichenhall acquires
BISON PALFINGER TKA 16
The new access platform for the Bad Reichenhall Department of Public
Works needed to be both compact and agile. “Other central factors for us
were quality and that service facilities were in the area,” explains Ernst
Dressler, acting operations manager of Bad Reichenhall’s electricity plant.
As is customary for municipalities, two bids were made to the department.
The BISON PALFINGER TKA 16 was selected and mounted on a MAN
TGL 8.180. Its combination of a maximal working height of 16 meters with
a wheelbase of only 3 meters is what gave PALFINGER the green light.
“The competition just couldn’t offer us such a versatile solution. The
mounting height and wheelbase were simply too great.”
Bright and early in the morning, before traffic picks up, Andreas Kreisel
heads out with the TKA 16 to control the streetlights. “Even the narrowest
traffic islands and steep streets don’t pose a problem anymore. The 4 more
meters of outreach in comparison with the previous model also makes a
big difference,” Kreisel adds, full of enthusiasm and pride about the latest
acquisition. ❚

…on the long road to Pilbara

With its “jumbo class”, WUMAG PALFINGER
offers a harmonious platform concept for
working heights from 37 to 70 meters. The
Australian rental company LinCon Hire is also
convinced of the advantages these access platforms have in terms of stability, reliability,
safety, and ergonomics. No wonder the company’s vehicle fleet includes a dozen units in
this series (WT 450, WT 530, WT 610, and
WT 700).
The WUMAG PALFINGER WT 450 and
WT 530 were first going to get their feet wet
in the construction of power lines in the area
of Pilbara, in northwest Australia. Whereas the
WT 530 was already on site, the journey for
the WT 450 from Brisbane, located 5,200 kilometers away, turned into a true odyssey. First
there was a delay in the import and customs
procedures on account of the Christmas holidays. Then came the heavy rainfalls and flooding along one part of the route. And finally,
there was the detour of a whopping 1,200 kilo-
meters caused by the announcement of a fourweek road closing due to rain. In short, it
wasn’t looking like the platform would be
arriving on time.
Yet after a grand total of 7,000 kilometers the
WT 450 did manage to reach its destination on
time for its first job! Together with the WT 530,
the two “jumbos” showed what they were made
of, at temperatures topping 45° C. The customers couldn’t have been more pleased! ❚

In addition to its well-known and well-established aluminum platforms,
MBB PALFINGER has become extremely successful in the food and
beverage distribution business with its MBB PALFINGER 2000/2005
K-plus equipped with steel platform. We are especially pleased that
Germany’s largest supermarket corporation, the EDEKA Group, has
become partial to our tail lifts. Following a very successful year in 2008,
we were also able to convince the company this year of the positive
overall performance of MBB PALFINGER. A first-rate achievement and
recognition for the great teamwork that has lasted decades!
The MBB PALFINGER steel platform is characterized by its utmost
stability. In addition, it also comes available with a unique KTL coating
with optional powder coating in RAL colors. The high quality standards
are reflected in the salt spray test (according to EN ISO 12944-2) of up
to 1,400 hours. If necessary, the steel platforms can be equipped with
anti-chaffing protection on the top and with stainless steel lateral borders. This can reduce damage to the coating caused by surface contact.
Many other accessories and options are adaptable according to the
operator’s needs. These include the extremely long-lasting MBB synthetic coating of the surface to reduce noise, roll stops, recesses for
castors, and space on the rear for large advertising. ❚

Comfortable and safe underfloor lifts

The British charity organization Lord’s Taverners was established in
1950 with the goal of making the lives of physically disadvantaged children easier and more pleasant. The organization is well-known with its
over 900 mini-buses shuttling throughout the U.K., Ireland, and even on
Barbados. Lord’s Taverners’ little green buses provide a tremendous
service by enabling children with special physical needs to get to school
comfortably and without difficulties.
The mini-buses have been equipped with “Easy Access Solutions” by
RATCLIFF PALFINGER since the 1980s. The buses were originally fitted with passenger lifts installed in the interior of the vehicle. However,
in the 90s, underfloor lifts, mounted underneath the vehicle, became the
norm. The advantages of this type of construction are clear: direct entry
into the rear of the vehicle, more room within the vehicle, and greater
flexibility regarding overall vehicle use.

for breakdowns
New maintenance and repair vehicle
by ROBEL for the German national
railway – Naturally, in cooperation
with PALFINGER RAILWAY.
A new ROBEL vehicle for quick intervention during breakdowns of
contact line systems has greatly contributed to the rationale and continued optimization of the workflow at Germany’s national railway, Deutsche Bahn AG.
IFO stands for “maintenance and repair vehicle for overhead contact
lines”. Everything about the vehicle is geared towards expedient repair
work on overhead lines in case of damage. The IFO 57.44 can run on all
Deutsche Bahn tracks, from the ICE high-speed lines to the winding
branch lines – and even through the tunnels of commuter railway systems run on alternating current, such as those in Munich, Frankfurt
and Stuttgart.
The extensive technical equipment found on the IFO, intended for overhead line work, can best be seen on the roof design. Not a single meter
along the roughly 20-meter long, fully accessible roof has been wasted.
There is an access platform – manufactured by PALFINGER RAILWAY,
of course – both in front of and behind the trapdoor to the roof, which
provides access from the workroom.
A PA 95 access platform is located on the side towards vehicle end 1. It
is generally intended for work on overhead contact lines and in heights
of up to 10 meters above rail level. The extension arm as well as the
assembly platform attached to it are both individually slewable. The
platform, with a maximum payload of 500 kg in accordance with
EN280, has a fully foldable and telescopic railing to reduce size to a
minimum during transport. It was specially constructed to guarantee
vehicle clearance when in transport position. A PDF 99 hydraulic wire
positioning device has also been installed for the suspension cables
and overhead wires. The unit can be moved laterally in its base and
has a working range of 4 to 8.5 meters above rail level as well as up to
4.5 meters on both sides of the track axis.
The second access platform located on the side towards vehicle end
2 – a PA 360 with retractable railing to guarantee vehicle clearance
when in transport position – provides an even much greater operating
range. The platform reaches a maximum working height of 22 meters
above track level and a maximum payload of 280 kg in accordance with
EN280.
Both access platforms are equipped with the new PALTRONIC 150.
The new PAL 150 integrates full geometry readings, stability appraisal in
real-time, as well as dynamic stability calculations when several devices
are simultaneously in operation. This enables both access platforms,
each with maximum payload, to be slewed on the same side of the IFO
without jeopardizing its stability or ability to move at crawling speed.
The first eight IFO models from the ROBEL factory in Freilassing,
Germany will be delivered soon. ❚

AG is a highly specialized firm in the
fields of transport, wood debarking,
woodchip production, and heating. For its timber transport
and woodchip production
departments, the company has a total of 9
EPSILON cranes in
service, two of
which are mounted
on mobile chippers. Equipped
with the latest
generation of
EPSILON crane
cabins, the chipper-crane combinations can be
operated comfortably by joystick.
“We make some pretty
tough demands on our
EPSILON timber cranes.
They have to prove their reliability and efficiency day in and
day out. But that’s only one side of it.
With our newest vehicle, a truck
mounted crane with a chipper unit capable
of rotating 180°, we saw once again that an
EPSILON crane could help us carry out very
technically demanding and innovative projects,”
remarks Daniel Baumgartner, managing director of H. Baumgartner & Sohn AG.
Why is a rotating chipper even important? With
conventional chippers the unit is mounted in a
secure position, with the feeder on one, predetermined side. But if the timber is on the other
side, the chipper cannot be “fed” efficiently. That
means the vehicle must turn around – something that costs a lot of time and money when
perfect addition to our current
vehicle fleet,” states Daniel
Baumgartner, clearly pleased
with the collaboration. ❚

EPSILON

Zivojin Stankovic knows all about demolishing
and constructing buildings. Originally from
Yugoslavia, Stankovic has been running his
Berlin construction and wrecking company
Jugos since the beginning of the 1980s. The
firm specializes in gutting, interior demolitions, and the renovation of abandoned and
contaminated sites, as well as in the removal
of construction waste, scrap, and bulky items.
Stankovic’s son Radosav, born in Germany, is
gradually taking over control of Jugos while
lightening his father’s load. Although the son is
also involved in real estate, managing modern
business, office and apartment buildings, he
still remains dedicated to the family waste
removal business, as witnessed by his recent
orders for a new 4-axle truck with hookloader
and mounted crane – both by PALFINGER.
The Volvo FM 12 has a 440-horsepower diesel
engine that, with the help of software, routes its
power for construction purposes to the automated I-Shift drive. One striking feature of the
32-ton truck, which comes equipped with parabolic springs, is its immense wheelbase of
5.6 meters. The truck can thus accommodate
construction waste or construction containers
of up to seven meters in length. Technically, the
back double-axle unit can carry a maximum of
21 tons. The front double axle holds 16 tons.
The 4-axle truck is thus capable of a total gross
load of 60 tons.
Jugos doesn’t handle its rookies delicately. It
was in need of a mega-powerful hook unit.
The Stankovic family found exactly what it
was looking for in the PALFINGER PALIFT
P 30.65 A. The articulated arm of the Power
unit doesn’t even lose steam when it has 30
tons on its hook. Impressive features of the
hookloader include its unique lifting geometry
(2 slewing radiuses), very low loading movement, and its ideal ratio of lifting capacity to
deadweight.
“At the moment we have the most powerful
container vehicle in Germany,” states Radosav
Stankovic proudly. “We’re able to move transport containers of up to 34 cubic meters, even
when they’re full,” adds the 31-year-old. He
is equally enthusiastic about the E110Z 74
EPSILON crane. In a matter of seconds the
Z crane is ready for use behind the cab. And,
with a reach of almost ten meters, it takes care
of its job just as fast. Stabilize, extend, and grab
it! Everything can be done comfortably from
the crane seat and at a low idling speed of only
600 rpm. “For a container vehicle nothing’s
better than a collapsible crane behind the cab
of the truck. It’s out of the way when we transport construction machines like power shovels,”
he says, before stating that with his PALFINGER
he can get the most flexibility out of his vehicle.
“Plus, it looks damn good.”
