About Mediplus
Mediplus was established in the United Kingdom in 1986. The
Company’s focus is the research, development, manufacture
and marketing of innovative medical devices that meet the
needs of patients and clinicians worldwide.
The Mediplus philosophy is to provide high quality products at
fair prices supported by excellence in customer service. The
Company sells direct to end-users in the United Kingdom and
to more than forty countries internationally through a network
of carefully selected distributors.
The first Mediplus range of products, developed for the
urodynamic market, highlights this philosophy. Mediplus was
the first company to develop colour-coded lines, incorporate
extension sets and feature an offset lumen to allow greater
filling rates.
The Mediplus urodynamic range is used throughout the
world by clinicians who care about patient comfort. Since
1986 Mediplus has used its expertise in manufacturing to
develop and launch products for the Urology, Urogynaecology,
Gynaecology, Gastroenterology, Anaesthetics, and General
Surgery sectors.
Mediplus holds CE mark, ISO9001 and ISO 13485 certification
and has FDA approval for a number of products. Products are
marketed throughout Europe, in the USA and Canada, South
America, Australia, New Zealand and the Far East. In the UK
we hold the Investors in People award, which recognises our
commitment to the ongoing development and training of our
personnel and high levels of service to our customers.

Pelvic Floor
The Pelvic Floor range of products from Mediplus focuses on
the following therapeutic areas:
Urology: Products such as Foley catheters for both adult and
paediatric urology, and a new, innovative method of inserting
catheters suprapubically that is proven to be safer, faster and
significantly more cost effective than other currently available
urinary catheters.
Urodynamics: Catheters and equipment such as Uroflow to
assist in the diagnosis of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms such
as bladder, urge, and stress urinary incontinence. A novel, noninvasive urodynamic device - CT3000 (“The Penile Cuff Test”)
for the diagnosis of Bladder Outlet Obstruction (BOO). These
tests are often carried out as a precursor to incontinence
surgery or, for male patients, Transurethral Resection of the
Prostate surgery (TURP).

Gynaecology: For the conservative management of female
Pelvic Organ Prolapse, Mediplus offers the Milex range of
pessaries for vaginal prolapse and non surgical treatment of
urinary incontinence suffered as a result prolapse.
Erectile Dysfunction: Non-invasive management of impotence
and Peyronie’s Disease utilising the Osbon ErecAid vacuum
therapy system - a proven highly effective drug-free therapy
for ED and Peyronie’s (avoiding the need for surgery).
Gastroenterology: Catheters to aid the diagnosis of gastric
and digestive motility disorders such as Achalasia, Gastrooesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD), and ano-rectal problems.

Pelvic Floor
Urodynamics catheters
For more than 25 years Mediplus has been manufacturing a
range of catheters specifically designed for most urodynamics
procedures. In that time the Company has introduced a number of
innovative features to help the clinician carry out the urodynamics
procedure – many of these features have now been copied by
competitors but their products have never equalled or surpassed
our original design.
These features include:
• Colour coded lines, red for rectal and blue for bladder
• Extension lines of sufficient length to reach from the patient
to the urodynamics machine are integrated into the catheter
during manufacture. This eliminates the need to buy separate
extension lines. More importantly, it reduces the number of
connections in the fluid system (each unnecessary connection
is a possible site for micro air bubbles to form and affect the
accuracy of pressure measurement).
• Winged luers to aid connection to and release from the pump
tubing or other accessories
• Asymmetric lumens in the double and triple catheters where
the filling lumen is larger than the pressure measuring lumen.
This facilitates an adequate bladder filling rate from a smaller
French size catheter, which aids pressure measurement during
the voiding phase of the procedure.

• For clinicians who prefer to use single lumen separate bladder
filling and bladder pressure catheters, the filling catheter
has a diamond-shaped eye which improves release of the
bladder pressure catheter during the ‘piggy-back’ technique
of catheter introduction into the bladder
• The introduction of single lumen rectal pressure measuring
catheters. By using a flap valve or a vented balloon at the
proximal tip of the catheter, air can be easily expelled from
the catheter lumen during the filling phase of the procedure.
The single lumen rectal catheters are smaller than double
lumen rectal catheters and, therefore, more comfortable for
the patient - and much less expensive.
• A triple lumen catheter designed for Urethral Pressure Profile
measurement where a low profile collar is placed on either side
of the urethral pressure measuring eye. This creates a 360°
ring of fluid around the circumference of the catheter whilst
measuring the urethral pressure. This means the variation
of pressure in the urethra is averaged, which improves the
accuracy of the test.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is the term used to describe the benign - i.e. non-cancerous - enlargement of the prostate
gland, a walnut-shaped gland located beneath the bladder. According to NICE, in BPH, Benign Prostatic Enlargement (BPE)
causes narrowing of the urethra where it passes through the prostate, leading in turn to Bladder Outlet Obstruction (BOO) and
Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS). The Gold Standard diagnostic test for investigating BOO is known as a Pressure-Flow
Study (PFS). However, this invasive test is expensive, time-consuming and requires skilled analysis and interpretation of results.
The CT3000 non invasive cuff test, however, provides a rapid means of investigating men with LUTS. The technology measures
both the urinary flow rate of a patient and the pressure generated by the bladder to produce this flow. A specialised cuff, placed
around the shaft of the penis, is temporarily inflated to obstruct flow and generate the cuff pressure required to interrupt
voiding, which then provides a measure of bladder pressure. The combination of maximum flow rate and cuff pressure is used
to determine if BOO is present. The non-invasive cuff test is intended to complement standard pressure flow studies and the
Management of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Men (2010) available to patients.
This technology can, therefore, play a significant role in ensuring that diagnostic services throughout the NHS are more productive
whilst removing the burden (and associated morbidities) that a diagnosis otherwise determined through a surgical procedure
brings to the Health Service. For example, the 2009 ProState of the Nation report estimated that the total UK secondary care cost
associated with the complications presented in this area of health is £111,568,793.

S-CathTM
Suprapubic catheterisation (SPC) is a surgical procedure
traditionally performed in the operating theatre and is routinely
used in urology to decompress the bladder in patients who present
as an emergency with bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and where
a urethral catheterisation is unsuccessful, or undesirable, because
of an enlarged prostate or urethral stricture. It is also electively
indicated in patients unable to tolerate a long-term urethral catheter
due to bladder spasm/discomfort/bypassing, and in patients with
neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and spina bifida.
Although generally regarded as a safe procedure, initial insertion
can carry a small but significant risk of bowel puncture, particularly
in patients with a contracted bladder. Traditional methods are often
daunting for both the surgeon and patient due to the potential risks
involved.

Mediplus and the BioMed Centre in Bristol have developed a new
catheter insertion kit using the Seldinger technique - a wellestablished clinical procedure - to increase safety and reduce the
number of insertions performed under general anaesthetic.
S-CathTM consists of a long needle (18g), a guide wire, a trocar
with an outer sheath, and a choice of 8, 12, 14 or 16Fr silicone
catheter. The anaesthetised tract is created in the normal way, but
the needle is left in the patient. The guide wire is then inserted
through the needle into the bladder. It will curl upon the posterior
wall preventing the trocar from being pushed in too far. The needle
is then removed and the trocar inserted in a controlled manner,
helping to reduce user anxiety and ensuring its entry into the
bladder.

S-CathTM
S-CathTM offers a number of benefits for both clinical staff
and patients:
• Greater control and accuracy. A high degree of control
allows accurate placement.
• Reduced risk. Low risk of trauma and tissue damage for the
patient. The catheter rarely needs to be inserted under general
anaesthetic - reducing the associated risks in an elderly at risk
group of patients.
• Greater confidence. The bladder may be located with an 18g
hypodermic needle, giving more confidence in inserting the
trocar into the bladder, as the track has already been secured
by the guide wire.
• Improved insertion and removal. The safety guide wire
improves insertion and removal, guaranteeing insertion of the
trocar along the anaesthetised track.
• Reduces costs and hospital stay. The procedure rarely needs
to be undertaken as an inpatient, under general anaesthetic or
in an operating theatre - reducing hospital stay, as well as
reducing overall costs. Evidence shows the length of stay can
be reduced from 2.3 days to a procedure time of 29 minutes.
• Frees up consultants’ time and enhances out of hours
services. Enables non-consultant grade clinical staff and
suitably trained nurse practitioners to perform the procedure
after training, thereby freeing up Consultant time and allowing
suitably trained staff to safely insert catheters during out of
hours.

GI Catheters
Mediplus single-use gastrointestinal manometry catheters are
ideal for all types of water-perfused manometry of the GI tract.
The range comprises single-channel, four-channel, eight-channel
and 16-channel variants in external diameter sizes of 2.3mm,
3.2mm, 3.9mm, 4.5mm, 4.7mm and 4.9mm with a wide range
of perfusion port configurations. All multi-lumen catheters have
radiopaque markers at every eye (perfusion port) and black lines
marked every centimetre to 85cm starting 1cm from the lumen
nearest to the catheter tip.
These products are supplied clean, non-sterile.
