On behalf of Council and the residents of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, I offer heartfelt thanks to The United Way of Fort McMurray for their hard work and commitment to education, social innovation and community engagement. Your efforts, together with the goodwill you help to create, make countless positive contributions to the community and improve the quality of life for people across our region. The dramatic success of last year’s campaign for The United Way of Fort McMurray is further proof that the entire community is committed to creating positive change here at home—even in trying economic times. Our residents are known for their generosity and spirit and this year was no exception. The local fundraising campaign shattered its target and, in just 10 weeks, collected a total of $8.18 million to support innovative community programming across 24 partner agencies. This tremendous success will mean improved resources and much-needed help for people of all ages in our region. Melissa Blake Mayor Regional Muncipality of Wood Buffalo The future is bright for our community and this is especially true for the United Way of Fort McMurray and its community partners. 2015 will see new change and growth as they move into their new home at The Redpoll Centre at Shell Place. This exciting venue will feature a new shared space for social profits and will bring together a strong network of organizations and engaged citizens in the social hub of the community. 3 A Message to our Community Building on the expertise gained in successfully operating The Redpoll Centre, the United Way was chosen by the Regional Recreation Corporation’s selection committee to operate the shared space for social profits at Shell Place. Along with the partnership of the Suncor Energy Foundation, the progressive investment strategies of the Board of Directors has ensured that we will financially be able to undertake this expansion which will provide incubation and increased impact and support for a greater number of community benefit organizations, including several sport or recreational organizations. During 2014 we shared the release of a new United Way mobile enhanced website and app. We also produced three virtual “Seeing is Believing” tour videos and an overall Community Campaign video thanks to a local filmmaking company called DK Films who are featured in this Annual Report. The Board identified that having the right communication tools is critical to sharing the United Way story and the impact created by our member agencies. In this Annual Report we will give you a closer look at a few of the people connected to United Way. You will learn about our collective achievements, our volunteers, the generosity of our donors, and about a few of the programs that are changing lives through the compassion and dedication of all these people. The Board continues to update its strategic and risk management plans, always being mindful that we live in a dynamic community. Strong governance principles, a commitment to openness and transparency, and being stolid stewards of donor dollars has put us in a strong position to move forward during a time of falling oil prices. We live in a wonderful community and after 37 years the United Way continues to strengthen our support of the most pressing social needs to make this a truly great home for everyone. As an organization, we are tremendously grateful for the knowledge, insight and hard work provided by our volunteer Board members, Community Investment Committee, and our skilled staff team. We know that we cannot achieve these goals alone. It is only through the collective action of these people that we succeed as a community and we are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together. We have an opportunity to build on this momentum and together we will keep helping kids thrive, fighting poverty, and building a stronger, more resilient and remarkable community. We are known as a place where people have lucrative careers, live vibrant and healthy lives, and raise families who are able to participate in a variety of activities and have access to resources. We know, however, that any of us may face an unexpected crisis and not be certain where to turn for help. We focus on bridging gaps for those people as well as the most chronically vulnerable, who are supported every day. Poverty is an example of something that can affect someone at any time. All it takes is one unforeseen circumstance like a job layoff or serious illness. We continue to strive, along with other community partners, to advance our understanding and create awareness around the need for a local poverty reduction/social inclusion strategy. As the province implements more pieces of their Social Policy, this will become important locally to help families achieve or regain independence. Ben Dutton President Board of Directors The United Way of Fort McMurray has been a partner in a number of collaborative initiatives including the Community Wellbeing Survey, which provided baseline data for a number of indicators, a shared measurement system for how we’re doing as a community and region. We have also been strong partners in the Social Prosperity Wood Buffalo project, ConvergenceYMM, the Heart of Wood Buffalo Leadership Awards, 211, and the Strategy Roadmap. 4 Diane Shannon Executive Director United Way was a proud partner in the 2nd annual ConvergenceYMM Conference that focused on cultivating a collective voice for the social profit sector. As part of our capacity building efforts, we hosted our Agency Forum and Info Session that included a workshop on effective story-telling. The results have been very positive. Staff at the United Way got into the spirit of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and got soaked for a good cause in the summer of 2014. The Tools for School program ran through August with our partners at Staples, Boston Pizza and Peter Pond Mall, which enabled us to help over 500 children get equipped for school. The United Way of Fort McMurray was announced as the anchor tenant of the community hub at Shell Place in March 2014. The Redpoll Centre will move in May 2015. Cliff Dimm was on hand at our VIP Red Carpet Reception to announce a legacy gift from the estate of Barb Jewers, former President of The United Way of Fort McMurray, for $50,000. 5 All That Kids Can Be and pastels to aluminum foil and neon paint, learned concepts and deepened their knowledge of the world around them. Children First, one of our United Way member agencies, continues to thrive with their dayhome agency and childcare facility. The Nest, located at 285 Sandpiper Road and licensed for 58 child care spaces, provides full-time care and education for children aged six months to six years. “This child centred art work was our first annual Children’s Art Show and Auction,” said Ross. A one-of-a-kind collection of art was featured at the MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery between November 11 and December 5 featuring pieces created by children in care with Children First. As the process of creation is more valuable than the finished product, observations and photographs of the creative journey were also included as part of the exhibit. Reflecting current research in Early Childhood Education, Children First subscribes to the Reggio Emilia or “emergent” philosophy, where the adults are facilitators and the children explorers. “Children have the freedom to explore their own creativity at their own pace,” said Leslie Ross, Executive Director, Children First. Partially funded by the Big Spirit Grant Program, this innovative project was also encouraged by the staff at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre. “Teachers no longer use art materials to merely teach children to illustrate or graphically represent other subjects, but art itself becomes a tool in the child’s development.” The results of this form of creative learning were impressive as the children took a broad array of materials, from sequins “The exhibition was a great success,” said Ross. “We are proud of these inherently creative children and the successful collaboration with the staff at MacDonald Island.” 6 2014-2015 Funded Agencies (All That Kids Can Be) Children First: Community Child Care Network Society • Early Years Intervention Program Fort McMurray Boys and Girls Club • STRUT • Organizational Support • Wavelength Support • ZAP ( Zany After School Program) Girls Incorporated of Northern Alberta • Friendly PEERsuaion • Girls Beware • Media Smarts • Project Bold-Action for Safety • Operation Smart • Girls Inc. Runners either paid a registration fee or brought in at least $150 in pledges. “This event is so much fun to plan,” said Leigh Grant-Simms, Program Director. “One of our board members is a huge Halloween fan. He gets to live out his dream by creating the zombie apocolypse.” Their 3rd annual Zombie Run was held on September 21st. Runners attempted to “survive” a 5 km course that had zombies strategically placed along the route trying to capture all three of their flags. Once a runner lost all three flags they were eliminated, though they were able to buy replacements along the way. The 2014 Zombie Run attracted over 120 runners and featured 50 zombies. It was one of many agency-organized fundraising events that helped contribute to our most successful Community Campaign ever. 7 Strong Communities “We’re seeing more families moving from our Safe Visitation to our Safe Exchange program,” said Beaver. “These programs decrease stress for both caregivers and children.” One of our agencies focusing on building a stronger community by building stronger families is The HUB Family Resource Centre. With a variety of programs and services in two locations, downtown and Timberlea, The HUB continues to impact more and more families. The HUB Family Resource Centre has had great success expanding into the rural areas of Wood Buffalo. They have two staff members who make weekly visits to Janvier, Conklin, Anzac and Fort McKay. The relationships they have formed have strengthened over time and the program is thriving. “This was the busiest year we’ve ever had,” said Chantal Beaver, Executive Director. “We had 5,049 unique participants, or an increase of almost one thousand in a year.” “We didn’t go into the communities trying to impose things,” said Beaver. “We went in to listen and learn. Today, other agencies are using us as a gateway into these wonderful communities.” It was also a significant year as they were able to negotiate a new lease agreement with the owner of their downtown location. “We were fearful we were going to have to close downtown,” said Beaver. “It was a scary time. But we were able to get a reduction in rent comparable to the rate of five years ago that has allowed us to stay. “ The HUB is strengthening families every day thanks to the efforts of their staff of 19. “We have an eclectic group, each with their own talents and strengths,” said Beaver. “They have done a great job at practicing mindfulness at the floor level. It’s made a real difference.” The two centres offer a series of drop-in programs ranging from Infant Massage to Fun With Music. They also offer programs for families in situations where there is a higher risk of domestic violence. 8 2014-2015 Funded Agencies (Strong Communities) Blue Heron Support Services: Alberta Brain Injury Network • Education, Awareness and Prevention Coordinator • Supports for Community Living • Brain Injury Support Group Fort McMurray Search and Rescue • Prevention, Education and Awareness Canadian Mental Health Association Advocacy for Mental Illness • CAPPS School Conflict Resolution Program • Family Support and Skills Training • Organizational Support • Paws for People • Rural Engagement HIV North Society • Outreach • Organization Support CNIB • Registration, Referral and Client Support Services Fort McMurray Family Crisis Society • Community Awareness & Special Events (CASE) • Early Intervention Program • Sexual Assault Program • Second Stage housing Golden Years Society • Organizational Support • Seniors Luncheon Mark Amy Treatment Centre • Organizational Support • Capacity Development McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association • Seniors Support Worker • Volunteer Coordinator Pastew Place Detox Centre • Pre-treatment program • Post-treatment program • Program Facilitator Some Other Solutions • Crisis Line • Grief and Loss Program • Students Assisting Students Program (SASP) Spinal Cord Injury Alberta • Community Development Work The Hub Family Resource Centre • The Hub on Wheels • Organizational Support • Safe Visitation and Safe Exchange Programs Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo • Afterschool Program • Multicultural Expo • Capacity Building United Way agencies Providing services (and hope) when it counts “It was amazing how quickly they had set up an emergency shelter at Holy Trinity,” said McDaniel. “With no warning and in an instant I went from having everything to having nothing. All of a sudden I needed the services that this Community Campaign raises money for. It happened to me; it could happen to you.” Imagine going to bed tonight, secure in the knowledge that you are enjoying the comforts of a prosperous life, a healthy oil sands salary, secure job, lots of friends and a bright future. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night realizing that your condominium complex was going up in flames, that the alarm system had failed to work, and that you had seconds to get out. Imagine that outside it was the middle of winter and that all you had on was a pair of shorts and a hoodie. For Lori McDaniel, co-chair of the 2014 Suncor United Way Campaign, this scenario hits pretty close to home as it is exactly what happened to her in February 2012. The emotional connection Lori with her Suncor United Way Campaign to those frantic moments Co-chair Lancaster Lawrence and the displaced days that followed was evident as she shared her story to the small group of us riveted in The Redpoll Centre boardroom. “There were a bunch of us that barely got out,” she shared at a workplace campaign chairs meeting. “I was standing there in the cold with nothing. It wasn’t the building owners that were there for us, it was United Way funded agencies. They arrived to help almost immediately.” “Tell that story,” she said. “Any of us could need the services provided by any number of the agencies that are reliant on United Way funding to operate. While we’re in a position to give, we should do so. That’s why I am so passionate about being a part of this campaign.” With no possessions, no wallet, no keys, Lori, along with hundreds of others, was all of sudden cast into the arms of emergency services personnel and agencies who dropped whatever they were doing to help. 9 From Poverty to Possibility “At first, the volunteer team that went to do some work there was somewhat reluctant,” said Tracy Unger, Co-Chair, Syncrude United Way Campaign. “But after they met Kate, and she introduced them to the facility, staff and patrons, there was a significant shift. They understood what kind of difference they were making and can’t wait to go back. It turned out to be a great team-building opportunity in addition to a way of giving back.” The Salvation Army was one of our agencies featured in the virtual Seeing Is Believing tour videos that were produced in 2014. They opened up their doors to the United Way and the filmmakers from DK Films which resulted in a two and a half minute vignette that has been seen by thousands. “I’ve lived here my whole life,” said Michael Mankowski from DK Films. “I always thought that this was just a thrift store.” The United Way staff did a rather unique Day of Caring in the Mat Program just before Christmas. Russell Thomas, our Director of Communications and Community Impact used his painting talents to paint a mural of Métis elder Elsie Yanik. Staff members from The United Way and The Salvation Army each contributed to the project by scribing their favourite prayer in their own language. The “Faith, Hope and Love” mural made quite an impact. The Salvation Army Community Centre does so much more as clearly seen in the video. In addition to running a men’s shelter, they have seven other programs housed in this threelevel facility in the heart of downtown Fort McMurray. “I would say that the Salvation Army is a gift to Fort McMurray,” said Floyd Perrier, one of the patrons of the men’s shelter who is featured in the Seeing is Believing video. Through the assistance of the staff and the programs at The Salvation Army Community Centre funded by United Way, Floyd was able to go back to school, earn his GED, and give back. Last summer, he volunteered his time to paint the entire Mat Program space. “My staff told me that when the patrons came in that night, they were in awe,” said Kate Penney, Manager. “Several patrons had tears in the eyes. We want to make them feel more welcome and that they are important. The changes we’ve made, including this beautiful painting, are making a positive difference.” Our Day of Caring program also factored into generating understanding about this vital service in our community. 10 2014-2015 Funded Agencies (From Poverty to Possibility) Support Through Housing Team • Organizational Support The Centre of Hope • Fund Development Coordinator • Housing First Coordinator • Organizational Support • Outreach/Intake Services • Extended Hours Salvation Army Community Services • Family Services • Soup Kitchen • Community Response Unit Giving back to their community Virtual Seeing Is Believing tours create impact Michael Mankowski, Matt Thomas, and Jonathan Rice grew up in Fort McMurray. They went off to business school but soon discovered that they had a mutal love for filmmaking. Two feature films later, they found themselves back in Fort McMurray, ready and equipped to meet a strong demand for their expertise in Wood Buffalo. They worked with The United Way of Fort McMurray to produce a series of three Seeing Is Believing videos in the summer of 2014. “They were so invested in the process of capturing the story of our agencies,” said Russell Thomas, Director of Communications and Community Impact. “Rather than taking a point-and-shoot approach, they took the time to go on Seeing Is Believing tours before they picked up their equipment.” them to inspire giving. There is no question that they hit the emotional mark.” “We were presenting to a large group of engineers on site and played the Salvation Army video,” said Kiran MalikKhan, Director of Stakeholder Relations. “The number of people who were visibly moved was profound.” “It is clear that Michael, Matt and Jonathan had their aha moment,” said Diane Shannon, Executive Director. “They were able to successfully translate the impact they personally experienced to the finished product.” Mike, Matt and Jon have balanced the demands of a growing business with a desire to give back to the community that has given them so much. They have become valued partners in promoting the “Change Starts Here” movement in Wood Buffalo. The cost of film and video production and editing can be very prohibitive, especially for charitable organizations. However, with generous gift in kind support from DK Films, three Seeing Is Believing videos and an overall Community Campaign video were delivered on time and on budget. “These communication tools have really made a difference,” said Andy Carter, Chair of the 2014 Community Campaign. “All of a sudden we were able to put these compelling videos into the hands of our volunteer canvassers and use 11 Our 2014 Community Campaign While the bake sales, raffles, silent auctions, special events and canvassing were going on through September, October and early November, our region was bracing for a cold winter and a falling oil price. Despite an economy that went from a rolling boil to a slow simmer, individuals and companies went above and beyond to once again demonstrate their unparalleled generosity and support for the work of our member agencies. The 2014 Community Campaign began with great enthusiasm as our workplace campaign volunteers, board, community investment committee, agencies and community leaders flung their red scarves in the air. It was an appropriate metaphor for a wild and exciting 10 weeks that produced extraordinary results. “We saw a renewed effort to communicate the reason for giving,” said Andy Carter, 2014 Community Campaign Chair. “Not only did campaign volunteers do a great job telling our story, they became champions for our member agencies who create community impact every single day.” “We are delighted to announce that $8.18 million was raised by the region in this year’s fundraising effort,” said Carter. “The generosity of Wood Buffalo has shone through once again.” New communication tools went a long way to equipping passionate volunteers with a new way to inspire participation in the “Change Starts Here” movement. Seeing Is Believing videos, a new website and app all contributed to the work that was not only happening out at site, but in town as well. “So much credit goes to our workplace campaign teams and the work they did to focus on impact and the reasons to give,” said Diane Shannon, Executive Director. “We are so fortunate for the thousands of volunteers who take the United Way into their hearts and workplaces and advocate for those children, families and seniors helped by our agencies. They are amazing, the true champions of the United Way Community Campaign.” “It was great to welcome Fort McMurray Realtors to our campaign,” said Carter. “They joined many banks, contracting companies, public sector organizations and small businesses who embraced the spirit of the Community Campaign and inspired giving among their peers.” 12 Community Investment Committee “While this process can be viewed as onerous, it is meant to ensure principles of good governance, transparency and accountability,” said Shannon. “At the same time, we want the agencies to be successful and we look forward to working with them through the application phase.” At the heart of The United Way’s relationship to its member agencies is the volunteers who serve on the Community Investment Committee. These men and women who work in a variety of sectors, volunteer hundreds of hours to guide the process of how funds raised by the Community Campaign are allocated. The relationship between the United Way, the Community Investment Committee and the applying agencies is an important one to all concerned. And while this has been an anxious part of the funding cycle in previous years, efforts are being made to create a more collaborative, yet diligent, process. “This is a comprehensive process,” said Muna Yussuf, Community Investment Coordinator. “We have a robust application process that requires a lot of due diligence on the part of the agencies, and a lot of reading for our Community Investment Committee volunteers.” “We are coaching our Community Investment Committee volunteers to focus on the overall impact of the agencies,” said Yussuf. “Whether it is a member agency applying for renewed funding or a new agency wanting to access funding support, our primary interest is on how people are being helped. We aspire to have the dynamic between the Community Investment Committee and the agencies to feel more like a partnership.” “These are people who work in all sectors of the community,” said Diane Shannon, Executive Director. “We are so appreciative of the work they do to prepare for the agency interview process and the integrity they demonstrate in the effective stewarding of donor dollars.” The committee is split into three teams, each of which is responsible for a third of the applicants. Each team reads and thoroughly reviews a binder that is hundreds of pages long; having a good sense of the funding requests is essential before the agencies come in for their interview. 13 Gifts in Kind A Gift in Kind is a great way for businesses and individuals with unique skills, products and services to take part in the United Way movement. Their generosity allows us to continue making a difference in the community. We value and appreciate their unique contributions. Treasurer’s Report There is increasing external pressure on not-for-profit organizations to demonstrate accountability and transparency. Donors and the general public are taking more interest in the administration activities of social profit entities in how they manage these so-called “public funds”. adds additional risk. Expanded use of Social Media (like via our new UWFM App), increasing levels of donors using electronic commerce and our high fundraising dependence on our typically extremely well-run and successful workplace campaigns adds challenges that must be considered and appropriately managed. We must consider new risks with respect to data/information management and data security. We must consider the impact of lowering oil prices on the economic stability of our community partners, and the further impacts felt by the direct staff/contractor employees and impacts experienced indirectly by the service organizations. And lastly - and most importantly - we must consider and be prepared, ready, and deliberate in supporting any additional requirements of our agencies who work so effectively in assisting all within our community. And I think this is a good thing. As a member of the United Way Board of Directors - we owe it to our donors to show them that they made a very good choice when they invested their charitable dollars with the United Way of Fort McMurray (UWFM). The Consolidated Financial Statements are enclosed for the year ended December 31, 2014. The numbers show the following; - Revenues increased by $295k or ~4%, setting a new annual campaign best-ever level. - Continued strong levels of targeted and responsible community investment aligned with the United Way’s mission and principles. - Administration Expense and Campaign Expense Ratios of <12% and <7% respectively - consistent with prior years and per 2014 expectations. - Our asset base increased by $681k or ~5% primarily due to higher levels of restricted cash reserves and growth in the “Tomorrow and Capital” reserve funds. - The UWFM is financially well-positioned to continue achieving its strategic goals via expanding community investment, building capacity of other not-for-profits and in investing in the development of our community. The UWFM is ready to meet these challenges. Our financial strength and operational efficiency are due to the extraordinary vision of our donors, the tireless commitment of our volunteers and the unrivaled dedication of our staff. These results provide the foundation for our successfully meeting any economic and/or community challenges into the future. Now let’s spend some time addressing what annual financial summaries do not specifically show - let’s discuss risk management. All this growth and development often Doug G. Simms BComm, CMA, CIA Treasurer, The United Way of Fort McMurray Respectfully, 25 Independent Auditor’s Report To the Members of United Way of Fort McMurray: The accompanying condensed financial statements, which comprise the condensed statement of financial position as at December 31, 2014 and the summary statement of operations for the year then ended, are derived from the audited financial statements of United Way of Fort McMurray for the year ended December 31, 2014. We expressed a qualified audit opinion on those financial statements in our report dated February 18, 2015. The basis for our qualification of our audited financial statements is common with many charitable organizations, the Organization derives revenue from donations and fundraising, the completeness of which is not susceptible of satisfactory audit verification. Accordingly, our verification of these revenues was limited to the amounts recorded in the records of the Organization and we were not able to determine whether any adjustments might be necessary to campaign contributions and pledges, excess of revenues over expenses, cash flows from operations, current assets, current liabilities and net assets. The condensed financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required by Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. Reading the condensed financial statements, therefore, is not a substitute for reading the audited financial statements of United Way of Fort McMurray.
