Protection of Assets against
Hydrocarbon Fires
Key Parameters and standards for Fire
Proofing
Passive fire protection (PFP) is critical to loss prevention in the event of a fire or explosion
and fire incident on an offshore structure.
Design, selection and specification of PFP, as part of the project process, is key to long term
reliability of the PFP material installed.

Selection Criteria for a Specific PFP
System
1. The design

2. The Selection
Will the material meet my requirement
3. Performance
How well (or not) will the material perform in
years

ASTM – BS – ISO – UL1709
NPD – API2218 – UL1709 – ISO 834 – BS476
NORSOK M501 – UL263
UL1709 – ISO834 – ISO 22899 – BS476
Offshore industry
BS 476 Part 20 (appendix D), EN1363-2, ISO834-3 is widely used test standard
Onshore
UL1709 is in many cases the default standard.

The critical core temperature can
be defined as the temperature
that the steel will reach whilst still
maintaining enough strength to
carry an amount of load and thus
prevent collapse. This is not the
temperature at which the structure
will actually collapse.

Design of PFP
Limiting Steel Temperature
The limiting temperature to be considered for various scopes in a project will vary depending
on how onerous the fire scenario is in each case –
Typical on-shore Installations – 500 to 600 deg C
Typical Off shore Oil & Gas structures – 400 deg C
Typically for Vessels & Spheres – 300 or 427 deg C
Risers – typically 200 deg C

Selection of Fire Proofing product
Critical Considerations –
Durability over its expected life
Environment i.e. Spray – UV – Freeze thaw – Ice – Chemical and so on
Wave action
Class Societies verify the product performance in “virgin, non weathered” state
Fire Protection is applied in “harsh environmental conditions”

Why do you need Chartek Fire Protection?
Fire protection is important for:
 Personnel Protection – giving people time to escape or shelter from the effects of the fire
 Asset Protection –minimise damage to the steel structure before fire services arrive
Example - Piper Alpha Platform Disaster 1988
UK North Sea
167 lives lost
Lord Cullen’s Enquiry & Report
Identify hazards
Evaluate the risks
Establish safety critical elements

How do Chartek epoxy passive fire
protection material works?
 Chartek epoxy passive fire protection
materials swell or ‘intumesce’ in a fire
providing an insulating durable char layer
that slows the temperature rise of the steel
substrate
 Unprotected steel experiences a rapid
heat rise which if not protected would lead
to eventual collapse

Historical Way of Fire Protection
Collapsed sphere due to corrosion
under cementitious PFP.
 Potential for corrosion underneath these
products
• leads to a weakening of the steel
• when severe, lead to cracking of the fire
protection due to the swelling of the
corrosion product.
 This is one reason why a number of major
operators now require that steel is hot dip
galvanised if it is to receive cementitious fire
protection.
27
Failure beneath cementitious fireproofing
Effect Of Cementitious Fireproofing
Accelerating Corrosion
28
Corrosion under Cementitious PFP
Norwegian Sector – North Sea
 In many cases cement based products appear to be in good
condition. However, upon investigation the complete lightweight
cementitious system has disbonded from the substrate
