The final decision to opt
for SkyTrain technology was
the right one, but the process
that led to that decision was
flawed.
That’s what Auditor General
John Doyle said in a report
released Thursday, which
points to a lack of cost analysis options and bloated ridership projections.
“While my audit ultimately
concluded that the SkyTrain
extension was the best option,
it did this using information
not present in the Treasury
Board submissions,” the
report stated.
The report notes business
case models developed in
2008 and 2010 did not include
enough information around
costs, benefits and risks when
comparing the three modes
contemplated: SkyTrain, light
rail or bus rapid transit.
“What we found was that
the information that went to
Treasury Board wasn’t robust
enough — it should have
gone further, and further
questions should have been
asked,” Assistant Auditor
General Russ Jones told The
NOW Thursday.
“The information was all
there. It just hadn’t been
brought together and put into
the business case for Treasury
Board to make their decision.”

Coquitlam resident Mike Vinter began painting eggs after a forced retirement in his early 60s. To see
more photos of Vinter and the painting process, visit us online at www.thenownews.com.
It was the unexpected end of Mike Vinter’s
working days that prompted him to hatch
his art career.
More than 20 years later, that change
turned out to be a life-altering decision.
The 82-year-old Coquitlam resident, who
specializes in designing ornamental eggs,
credits his relatively newfound passion as
being responsible for saving his life.
Vinter was in his early 60s and had no
intention on calling it a day from
his day job in the
early 1990s. When
it turned out that

— all of a sudden I ended up pensioned off
before I was ready for it,” he said.
“For a year or so, I was brooding and
didn’t know what to do with myself. I
thought, ‘Well, I can’t continue like this,’ so
I got into [art].”
Though he wasn’t artistically inclined in
his younger years — he “hated painting”
in years past — some prompting from his
daughter led him towards an art form that is
widely practiced across central and eastern
Europe.
“I doubted that I would be interested, but
I got hooked on it,” he said. “At first it was
really amateurish.”
Vinter’s process begins with selecting an
egg — typically he opts for a chicken egg,
though he’s also used eggs from quails,
ostriches and geese.

Park subject of development fears
Mayors worry as 99-year lease for Admiralty Point in Belcarra Regional Park has expired
Jeremy Deutsch

t’s considered the crown jewel of
the Tri-Cities.
Now both the city of Port Moody
and the Village of Belcarra are teaming
up in hopes of keeping the shine on
Admiralty Point in Belcarra Regional
Park.
Both municipalities have passed
motions asking the federal government to either transfer the lands to
Metro Vancouver or lease the space in
perpetuity to ensure the lands are preserved for park use.
The federal government had originally signed a 99-year lease with the
City of Vancouver back in 1912 to keep
the lands for park purposes.
The Admiralty Point lands were
then handed over to the Greater
Vancouver Regional District — now
Metro Vancouver — in 1969 for the
same purpose.
But the lease ran out in 2011, and
municipal leaders in both communities are worried the lands could be
developed.
Mayor Mike Clay said the city
doesn’t want the park, which is mostly

change land use.
“We want it [Admiralty Point] kept
for the people to enjoy,” he said.
“What we’re saying is we want
certainty on the land. We want it to
remain dedicated as parkland. We
want it to remain recreational use. We
don’t want to see any conversion of
land use.”
The 75-acre parcel of land is located
at the tip of Belcarra Regional Park
along Burrard Inlet.
The land is used as a popular trail
and recreational area and also serves
as an environmental habitat.
Clay suggested it wouldn’t be worth
using the land for any type of residential or industrial development since
there are no amenities in the area and
it would need new infrastructure and
servicing.
He argued that not having a new
agreement in place opens the door to
development and speculation, and also
creates uncertainty.
On Tuesday, Port Moody passed a
motion asking Ottawa to step in, while
the Village of Belcarra passed a similar
motion on March 11.
Belcarra Mayor Ralph Drew told The
Vancouver Sun recently the waterfront
land is a crucial section of the 1,100hectare Belcarra Regional Park, which
draws 90,000 visitors every year and
is considered the Tri-Cities’ version of
Stanley Park, with swimming lakes,
trails and mountains.
“If it was lost it would be a giant
bite out of the hillside there,” he told
the newspaper.
The lands also play a part in Port
Moody’s history.
Col. R.C. Moody, for whom the city
of Port Moody is named, established
the Admiralty Point Military Reserve
there in 1860.

fighters are retiring, at times,
before the cutoff.
Delmonico said he will
watch to see how the case
unfolds, but he doesn’t appear
to have a problem with the
current retirement age.
He said it’s not just a safety
issue for the public, but for
firefighters themselves, arguing the job of fighting fires is
a young person’s occupation.
The chief noted studies that
show it takes between six and
12 firefighters to rescue one
individual from a building,
and that becomes even more
intensive for members who
tend to be larger and carry
equipment.
“To me, the younger you
are, the easier it is to perform
the strenuous parts of the job;
the older you get the harder it
is,” Delmonico said.
“The public is looking for
us to provide a level of service that sometimes can’t be
provided as they age. It’s an
unfortunate fact, but that’s
just the reality.”
Earlier this month, Russell
Shellard, 63, a pay-by-call
firefighter with the Chilliwack
department, was given the
green light to move ahead
with his complaint to the
tribunal.
Port Moody Fire Chief
Remo Faedo sees the issue
differently than his Coquitlam
colleague and believes if a
firefighter is able to perform
the tasks, they should be able
to stay on the job.
“I believe there is a lot
of merit in a case-by-case
option,” he said, adding there
may be some younger members who can’t keep up with
their older counterparts.
“There are people out there
at 60 that are in prime physical condition and can do the
job.”
The chief even suggested
there is a trend by departments to remove the language
around mandatory retirement
from collective agreements.
But in Port Moody, Faedo,
who will also be watching the
Chilliwack case closely, said
the age requirement hasn’t
been tested, and in many
cases firefighters are opting to
retire early.
In Port Coquitlam, Fire
Chief Nick Delmonico sees
the debate as a pension issue
for firefighters. He noted
pensions are built to give
firefighters an ability to retire
early, and considers challenging the current system a
“slippery slope” that could set
a precedent.
Delmonico also appeared
to favour letting firefighters
work past the age of 60, suggesting people at that age are
far more fit than they were at
the same age 30 years ago.
“I don’t want to make a
qualified statement based on
someone’s age or physical
ability to do a job. I believe
in the fire service, it’s more
based on the structure of their
current pension and that they
can retire early at 30 years,”
he said. “I don’t think you can
have both.”

instrument similar to a lathe
to draw his patterns.
As an avid gardener, it’s not
surprising that the majority of
Vinter’s designs reflect some
type of floral theme. Some of
his eggs also follow specific
patterns or shapes. Others are
covered in Vancouver Canucks
colours and logos.
“I try to make them as
colourful as possible,” he said.
Born in the former
Czechoslovakia, Vinter was
first exposed to the time-honoured tradition by his grandmother.
“When I was a kid growing up back in Prague, my
grandmother, who was in her
late 70s, used to send us these
coloured eggs,” he said. “They
really became a family treasure, more or less.”
Given the length of time
that had passed since then,
Vinter had all but forgot-
ten about the eggs, let alone
attempting to decorate them.
It wasn’t until the early 90s
when his daughter — a teacher in Squamish — asked him
if he was interested in helping
her decorate the eggs she was
working on.
That simple query triggered
memories that had been lost
for decades.
“At the time my daughter
showed me all of this, I finally
remembered this after 60
years, that these were treasures that we had when I was a
kid,” he said.
Vinter dove headfirst into
the artistic process, and was
selling his eggs at Place des
Arts the year after he began
learning the craft.
Since that time, he’s sold
eggs typically on a seasonal
basis — at Easter and around
Christmas — through the
Maillardville-based arts centre
and at his Burquitlam home.

NOW Thursday the department fielded a complaint at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday regarding
a child left unattended in a vehicle in the 100
block of Schoolhouse Street.
Though the vehicle was gone by the time
Mounties got there, the complainant recorded
the vehicle’s licence plate number and gave it
to the attending officers.
“We were able to locate the mom and the
child later on,” Chung said. “We spoke with
her and she understands that what she did was
not OK and that it could have turned out badly
very easily. What if someone was to jump into
her car to steal her vehicle?”
Chung did not disclose the name of the
woman, nor her age, but confirmed that she is
a Coquitlam resident.
He said the child was left in the vehicle for
“more than a few minutes,” though no injuries
were reported.
“This incident could be a wake-up call for
other parents and caregivers that leaving your
children unsupervised in a vehicle even for a
brief moment is not OK,” he said.
“Even on a cooler day, with the sun in the
sky, the car could have been heated up to 20 or
30 C in a matter of a few minutes.”
Robinson requests leave
John Kurucz
jkurucz@thenownews.com
The next Coquitlam council meeting could be one of
Selina Robinson’s last.
The two-term councillor,
and B.C. NDP candidate in
Coquitlam-Maillardville, will
request a four-week unpaid
leave of absence at the April
8 meeting. If granted, the
April 15 meeting will be her
last before the provincial writ
drops one day later.
“Once the writ is dropped I
want to put all my efforts into
the campaign,” she said in a
press release.
A clinical counsellor by
trade, Robinson was acclaimed
as the NDP candidate in the
riding last year after outgoing
MLA Diane Thorne announced
her impending retirement.
Last week, Steve Kim was
acclaimed as the Liberal contender in the riding.
“Since I was nominated,
I’ve put my private practice on
hold so I can fulfill my duties
as a city councillor and do
the door-knocking I want to
do as a provincial candidate,”
she said.
“But I know the four weeks
of the campaign will be very
busy and I want to be able to
devote all my energy to the
campaign.”
Robinson’s request
comes two weeks after fellow Coquitlam Coun. Linda
Reimer asked for the same
type of leave. Reimer is the
Liberal candidate in Port
Moody-Coquitlam, and is pitted against incumbent MLA
and former Port Moody mayor
Joe Trasolini.
Meanwhile, Port Coquitlam
MLA Mike Farnworth received
yet another vote of confidence
Sunday and was nominated
as the NDP candidate in that
riding.
“Serving the people of my
hometown is a real privilege,”
he said in a press release. “I’ll
be working hard during the
campaign, listening to voters
in Port Coquitlam and asking
for their support to continue
to provide strong representation for our community.”

Riverview’s West Lawn Building turns 100
John Kurucz

It was once revered as an
architectural masterpiece,
one of the crown jewels of the
Riverview Hospital site.
It’s now sitting empty, ravaged by time and neglect.
The West Lawn Building
turns 100 on Monday, April
1, a milestone that offers up
more questions than answers
as to the building’s fate, and
the fate of the former hospital
site.
“It is a challenge, because
those buildings have been
degrading for all of my life,”
said Mayor Richard Stewart.
“The challenges associated
with the degradation of heritage assets is enormous, and
something we should all be
concerned about.”
Initially known as the
Hospital For the Mind at
Mount Coquitlam, the West
Lawn Building opened in 1913

Outage no help to Earth Hour
At approximately 7 a.m. on Sunday, March 24, the
power went out in our area, the south side of Port
Coquitlam, Cameron Avenue and Pitt River Road
location.
It was out until just past 12:30 p.m. It was
reported that 1,300 homes were affected.
We later were advised that BC Hydro
reported cable problems.

To The
without power on a mild sunny Sunday
morning for five-and-a-half hours. What,
actually, was BC Hydro’s problem?
Wouldn’t the significant loss of electricity consumption over those five-and-a-half hours to 1,300
homes (7,150 hours) in Port Coquitlam help make
up for the previous night’s shortfall in the Earth
Hour number of 1.9 per cent?
Now that Port Coquitlam has attained the ranking
of Canada’s 33rd best place to live, we would hope
that our Earth Hour numbers help keep us in the
running.
Earth Hour, between 8 and 9 p.m. on March 23,
was reported as seeing just a modest reduction in
energy use, according to BC Hydro.
On Saturday evening, the three communities reduced their electricity use by
just 1.9 per cent each during Earth Hour
— the same as Burnaby and just slightly
better than Surrey at 1.8 per cent.

Our View
Next stop: a bland
station somewhere
A
nother step in the long-and-winding
route towards the Evergreen Line was
crossed with Saturday’s unveiling of
station names.
Although politicians who oversee the
spending of taxpayers’ money can smile
with ease, someone should have ventured a little deeper when the roll call of
Burquitlam, Inlet Centre and Lafarge LakeDouglas stations were presented like an
Oscar-winning nominee.
None of the names offend or appear
wonky — although the uncomfortable
amalgamate Lafarge Lake-Douglas skirts
the line. Four carry the bland ‘Centre’ or
‘Central’ vernacular. How can everything be
in the ‘centre?’
It adds up to bland language that fails to
highlight our community.
How strange and somewhat unique
would it have been if those who selected
the names had used an ounce of creativity
to make their choices?
Where is the link to local history, or a TriCities touchstone? Inlet Centre has a generic
weight that would sink a canoe.
An obvious option would have been
Newport, which reflects the new Port
Moody downtown site. Or even better, the
name of Ioco — a reflection of the route to
the old town site — would have added a
historic touch.
It’s true that most stops and stations
along the Millennium and Expo lines are
simple street and neighbourhood tags. For
some, there is no better reference point
than what is the most local street crossing.
But would it have really been terrible to
have shown some flare of creativity and to
have given the Evergreen Line a sense of
something outside the standard box?
School districts may be leaders of innovation and creativity when it comes to naming
new buildings. The Evergreen think tank
should have taken a longer look before
picking these dull monikers.

media, we learn by copying them rather than by following their words.
It does not help when you walk into each and
every store in the mall trying to find a shirt, only to
find that you see the same ones over and over.
The stores are all owned by a few people, so in
order to cut down on the cost of hiring multiple
designers, they hire one and alter their designs
slightly to put products into the different stores.
Shouldn’t it be a bit easier to find some individuality? After all, the admirable protagonists in all our
favourite novels, such as The Hunger Games and
Harry Potter, would have never found their happily-ever-after endings by trying to be the same as
everyone else.
They strived to stand out and be themselves, only
then finding the solution to their problems.
Anyway, nobody ever received a good grade for
copying someone else’s work in school. Shouldn’t
that apply the rest of the time too?

The many rules regarding headlights
“I have a number of questions
relating to automobile lighting.
What are the regulations now
regarding fog lights and the use of
them? As to driving lights, I know
the general definition of them has
changed to be the forward daytime
running lights. I see many vehicles
using the lower lights (generally in
the bumper) at the same time as
the regular headlights. So what is
the legal definition of those lights?
If they are ‘driving’ lights, how are
they allowed on in the city? Also,
are ‘fog’ lights allowed to operate
with headlights?
“The last question relates to
the overall lighting of a vehicle in
the dusk-to-dawn time bracket. I
notice this past couple of months a
number of cars driving around with
no lighting on the back of the car.
These are newer cars that I assume
have ‘automatic’ positions to their
light switch. If I see one of these
vehicles and have a chance to pull
behind or beside them at a traffic
light, I note that the dash nights
are on. This may mean the driver is
not aware he/she is driving without
proper illumination and does not
have the light switch in the correct
mode. I say this because I was able
to get the attention of a driver at a
traffic light. His wife said “WHAT?”
His reaction was to reach for the
light switch.
“So my question here would be,
could you [the police], at a traffic
light, signal the driver of this issue
with a brief siren sounding and (I
assume you have a loudspeaker)
announce the problem?”

The MVA regulations state that:

As for your last question, Walter,
the driver at the stop light that
you mentioned was probably driving just with his daytime running
lamps. My guess is that the dash
panel light would illuminate when
the engine is running. Drivers
who are not fully familiar with the
features of their vehicle may think
they have turned on the lights as
required by law.
As police officers, my colleagues
and I would definitely do more than
signal the driver to turn the lights
on. We would conduct a traffic stop
to make sure the vehicle, especially
the lamps, are functioning properly.
Drivers in B.C. are required to
illuminate all the lamps as stipulated in Division 4 of the regulations
when driving between a half hour
after sunset and a half hour before
sunrise.

Dying without a will can turn a tragedy into a disaster
Donald A. Drysdale
Don has a busy Wills
and Estates practice. He
also teaches courses on
the subject of real estate,
wills and estates.
Preparing a thorough, well-planned will is one of those critical things in life that too many people
put off until it’s too late. We all die, but it’s totally unnecessary to reach this point unprepared.
Passing on without a clear statement of what is to happen to all you’ve built makes an already tragic
situation even worse.
I’ve helped thousands of families develop a thorough, tax effective estate plan. If you’d like my help,
please call me.

The Tri-Cities has voted on which
businesses were the best of the best
in 2012. The businesses featured here
received the most votes from NOW
readers and can proudly declare themselves to be the very best in the region.
Residents of the Tri-Cities are blessed
to have a broad cross-section of outstanding businesses and services to
choose from, regardless of our needs
and wants. Everything from fast food
to fine dining; from specialty stores
to department stores; from auto sales
to auto service; from all sorts of health
and fitness service providers to a great
selection of venues for working out
and training; virtually everything we
require is right here close to our front
doorsteps. NOW readers have voted
on the businesses they believe provide
the very best products and service
based on their personal experiences.
These businesses are featured in this
section. We hope you take the time to
read through these pages and note who
the top businesses were. Maybe even
set the section aside to help with your
shopping decisions this year.
We trust your shopping experiences
in the Tri-Cities during 2013 will
constantly be exceptional. Thanks for
reading, and thanks for supporting
these great businesses.

Metro Vancouver will convene
on Coquitlam tonight (Friday)
to highlight one of the holiest
days on the Christian calendar.
Members of the Vancouver
Oratorio Project will be at
Hillside Community Church
to perform Johann Sebastian
Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion.
The performance will
include five soloists — Riley
McMitchell, Jeanine Fynn,
Matt Chittick, Megan Bryden
and Dane Wendell — performing alongside pianist
Yawen Wang beginning at 8
p.m.
“Saint Matthew Passion is
a rarely performed work here
in B.C.,” Bryden wrote in an
e-mail to The NOW.
“In other parts of the world
it is as popular, if not more
popular, to hear this being
performed on the Easter
weekend as it is to hear
Handel’s Messiah during the
Christmas season. This piece
is a sacred oratorio chronicling the crucifixion of Jesus
Christ.”
Tickets for the performance
cost $25, and can be purchased at the door. Hillside

Cup fever
fuels Blues
In the beginning, it was an idea
hatched amongst friends — let’s
form a soccer team.
The friendly, jovial camaraderie
of the game, which most had played
at the higher minor levels, was the
driving force. But when push comes
to shove, it’s winning that is the
glue that binds the Port Moody SC
Blues men’s soccer team.
“I said from the get-go that while
we want to have fun, we’re in it
to win,” said playing coach Blake
Ceron. “Everyone was on board.”
The Blues head into this weekend’s Bradner Cup final against the
Chilliwack Rapids in Surrey aiming
to add another win to the list.
In their second year together, the
Fraser Valley Soccer League squad
has emerged as steely challengers to
any title put before them.
“Last year it was just a few of getting together deciding to make a
soccer team,” recalled Ceron. “We
started in Division 4, we won our
league and the President’s Cup and
now we’re in looking at a shot at the
Bradner and Provincials.”
In most recent play, Port Moody
edged out the Div. 1 Langley Young
Guns 3-2, while they blanked the
Fraser Valley 3-0 three weeks ago.
Their toughest test came in the
quarterfinals, when after 25 minutes they trailed the men’s premier
North Delta squad 3-0. Port Moody
got one back before the half but
faced an uphill rally — and did it.
“We came out flying in the second half and scored to make it a
one-goal game, then tied it up,”
recalled Ceron, who is assisted by
Devin Kirk. “To win it in the shootout was very sweet.”
Finishing second in the Div.
2 loop this season, with a 11-2-5
record, assured the squad a berth to
the provincials. But the Bradner has
a lure of its own, too, noted Ceron.
“I personally think it’s huge. The
Bradner is one of the oldest competitive cups in Canada, so there’s quite
a bit of prestige on the line.”
With a roster stocked with 21- to
24-year-olds facing older rivals, the
club’s accomplishments aren’t lost
on the youthful coach.
“In our league there are definitely
some teams led by salty veterans,
but I think our young flare gives us
that edge, that fire.”

Reds’ returnees embrace new roles
Dan Olson
sports@thenownews.com
W
hen Kyle Williams draws up his pitching
rotation, he notes that there is no dominant
ace returning and no pitcher who carries a
Verlandian presence to the mound against opposing
batters. At least not yet, anyways.
As the B.C. Premier Baseball League gets ready for
the seasonal charm of an umpire’s call to “Play Ball,”
the Reds aim to present a balanced approach in their
charge up the circuit’s ranks.
“Our pitching is a strength, but not like in the
past where we were top-heavy,” said Williams.
“Whereas in previous seasons we had an ace or
a streak stopper right out of the gate — a [Jeff]
Heidema, a [Matt] Trimble and a [David] Otterman
— this year we have seven strong pitchers who’d be
top-four on any other team.”
And while the club may not boast that ace today,
returning righthander Curtis Taylor says he’s ready
for the job and the responsibility.
“I have high expectations of myself,” said Taylor.
“This year I want to be the PBL’s top pitcher and
break the Reds’ record for best [earned run average].
I know the goals sound lofty but I like to set them
high.”
That’s the kind of talk a manager likes to hear as
the season kicks off — with the opening pitch coming April 6 in Whalley.
Williams’ rotation includes returnees Brandon
Becking and Austin MacDonald and junior grads
Jonathan Keltie and Ryan Mose.
For Taylor, there is some evidence to back up his
higher expectations. With three consistent pitches in
his arsenal, the PoCo native is working on adding a
slider to the mix.
“This past season I’ve gained [about] seven miles
per hour on my fastball. I’m starting to throw harder
and I’m hitting my spots and that’s the key,” said
Taylor.
This year’s roster has some obvious strengths and
some certain question marks, but Willliams is confident that as the pieces come together, the club will
be in the mix come playoff time.
“I’m not sure exactly what we have this year,” the
recently married school teacher said. “On paper we
look good, our outfield matches up with anyone’s,
our pitching is something it wasn’t last year — deep.
“If we have some concerns it’s for our infield,
where we have an entirely new look.”
If there’s a player that will personify this year’s
potential it’s the sweet swing and gutsy play of centrefielder Max Hollingworth.
The six-foot-one outfielder lit up opposition pitchers in Arizona, sending a couple of bombs far.
“He just mashed the ball [in Arizona],” said
Williams. “He had two triples, two home runs, two
doubles — he was a one-man wrecking crew.”
Hollingworth posted a .242 batting average during
the regular season, driving in 19 runs. In the playoffs
he was a completely different hitter, going five-fornine including a home run over five games. He has
since added an element of leadership that has been a
pleasure to watch, said the fourth-year Reds coach.
“I’m so impressed at how he’s come in this year,
Lisa King/NOW
Ready to launch a new B.C. Premier Baseball League season are, from left, manager Kyle
Williams, pitcher Curtis Taylor, and outfielder Max Hollingworth.
not just what he’s done on the field. Max has become
like another hitting coach for us, adopting a couple
of our younger hitters and helping them out,” said
Williams.
The graduation of infielders Darren Honeysett,
Taylor Lawrence and Tyler Yorko opened spots for
competition — and a competition is what there is.
McDonald will get a lot of playing time at shortstop when he isn’t pitching, while both Becking and
junior Kevin Heidema will also line up in the infield
when not on the mound.
It’s the new reality with the infield, where dual
roles means a lot of lineup changes game to game.
The club spent part of spring break in Arizona at a
tournament, where they finished with a 6-1 record.
They got to play a few American and eastern Canada
teams, but most of their opponents were fellow
BCPBL squads escaping the seasonal wet weather.
The benefit of such a journey isn’t just the games
but in settling together as a team, and Williams said
the trip was a success in that regards. Now to translate that on home turf.
“If it’s anything like our eight days in Arizona,
[team chemistry] should be great,” he said. “The
boys bonded, they worked well and behaved. I
thought we’d have some who’d look at it as a holiday
but they didn’t. It was very business-like.”
Last year’s barely better than mediocre 26-22 regular season showing would later evolve into a Final
Four showing, where they finished third overall.
Coquitlam doesn’t play at a home game until
April 18, when Abbotsford comes to town.

Express coaching void sparks rumour
Dan Olson
sports@thenownews.com
He hasn’t accepted the job nor has he
applied for it.
However, Todd Harkins admitted that
he was looking for a coaching position in
junior hockey.
A Vancouver radio station on Tuesday
stated in tweet messages that Harkins was
the leading candidate for the head coaching position with the Coquitlam Express.
The club relieved head coach and general
manager Jon Calvano of the post last week
after three years on the job.
“I’ve not ever applied for the job, and
I have not accepted it,” Harkins told The
NOW. “[But] I’m not getting any younger,
so coaching junior hockey is something I’d
like to do.”
Harkins, who stepped down as hockey
director of the North Shore Winter Club’s
hockey program last week, said he is
preparing his resume and is looking for a
junior coaching position.
“I’m definitely interested in pursuing a
job coaching junior hockey,” he said. “[The
North Shore Winter Club] has been a great
organization, but after a 12-year run at
the North Shore I’m looking to test myself
elsewhere.”
The 44-year-old said he plans to circulate his resume in the coming days.

The Coquitlam Express hope to celebrate a win in the
coaching department, as it fields applications for the
recently opened head coach position.
Aquasonics in synch
The B.C. Aquasonics synchronized swim club posted some
impressive marks at last week’s Synchro Canada national qualifier championships in Calgary.
Five of the six teams advanced the national championships,
with the Canadian Open championships slated for late April.
The senior national stream team, which includes Port
Moody’s Breanna Riou-Green, collected silver in the Senior
FINA free team routine. Anmore’s Alexia Iten, Coquitlam’s Rene
Bell and Riou-Green were part of the senior combo squad that
finished sixth in the combo final.
In the 13-15 national stream team, the squad — which
includes Coquitlam’s Lani-Marie Carbonel and Anmore’s Kalista
Iten — placed eighth in team routine and 10th overall.
“We had an extremely successful week at the Qualifier in
Calgary,” says B.C. Aquasonics head coach Susan Kemper. “Our
competition was fierce but our athletes handled it with great
determination and as a result we achieved many of the goals we
set for ourselves.”
Locals apply pressure in
junior world golf qualifier
A.J. Ewart and Henry Lee
kept up the pressure and
posted strong enough rounds
to finish tied for second at
the Canadian Junior Golf
Association’s Junior Worlds
qualifier at Squamish Valley
Golf Club Monday and Tuesday.
The Coquitlam pair trailed
Keaton Gudz in the boys 14
and under division by one
stroke after the two-day event.
Ewart set the pace on the
first day with a polished even-
par 72 that included four birdies and parring 10 other holes
to take a two-shot lead over
Gudz. Lee stood three strokes
back of the lead.
On Tuesday, Lee shot 72
around a single birdie and 16
holes of par, while Ewart posted a three-over 75 and Gudz
shot par to slip into first.
In the girls competition,
Avril Li finished tied for ninth
with a two-round showing of
163 (80-83).
Gleneagle senior take table title
Adrian Lee picked up his second senior B.C. single boys tabel
tennis title to lead a strong showing by the Gleneagle Talons at
the provincial championships last week.
Lee, an honours student who won as a Grade 10 and finished
second last year, reclaimed his title in his graduation year.
Collecting third place in boys team competition was the trio
of You Pen, Kasuki Sakui and Lee.
Gleneagle, which had 12 athletes competing in the event, was
also the host school. Drawing nearly 20 volunteers to help make
the event a success was teacher and coach Ali Tootian.

Harkins was head coach of the

He took over the Giants head coaching
position from Calvano in 2010, when the

A native of Cleveland, OH., Harkins
career in hockey saw him play 48 games in
the NHL with Calgary and Hartford.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections
Aries March 21 - April 19: You start the week
with a feeling of wisdom and harmony, yet you
know you are in the midst of a huge change, or
an exhausting struggle to maintain the status quo.
Change would be better: yield to it. Your ambition
returns Tuesday/Wednesday – good, take (wise)
steps. The week ends, Thursday/Friday, with a
feeling of celebration and social delight. You’re
confident, liked, and you see a good, buoyant
future. A light romance might begin. Retreat, sleep,
contemplate, plan Saturday. This week and those
ahead are the best in 3 years for starting a program,
project, or relationship.
Taurus April 20-May 20: A significant monetary
or sexual shift tries to nudge you into action
or commitment Sunday/Monday. Or, you might
discover your latest idea is illegal. Do act Sunday,
not Monday. (Act, but don’t create.) In general, you
are tired this week, so even favourable activities
should not be overdone. That said, midweek brings
glimmers of love, especially if your land’s still cold
and snowy. Intellectual, far travel, cultural and legal
activities are favoured also. Ambition and prestige,
always a good luck/bad luck story this year, are
emphasized Thursday/Friday. Happiness, Saturday!
Gemini May 21-June 20: Sunday brings change,
or you sense change around you, in ways that aren’t
easy to discern: they connect to your social circle
and your private self, especially your yearning self.
All this ultimately stands on or affects a relationship:
hints Monday. Midweek brings new mysteries, but
delicious ones, as temptation and curiosity rule.
Do your research; ask your future (e.g., does your
present path intersect with your desired future?). A
mellow, wise mood steals over you Thursday/Friday:
a light romance might visit. Watch the world with
ambitious eyes Saturday; if working, impress.

Friday, March 29, 2013
Cancer June 21-July 22: Maintain an ambitious
approach. Someone you admired for a long time
might have changed since 2010, maybe 2009, and
you don’t approve. But we all go through phases in
our lives: this is his/her new phase. Tackle chores
judiciously Sunday: if you seem to be opening even
bigger problems, step back and think, perhaps
abandon the task. Be co-operative, diplomatic
Tuesday/Wednesday: the chance you’ll meet your
true love, while extremely low, does exist: it would
be a tempestuous marriage. Sexual urges, financial
opportunities, draw you Thursday/Friday – luckily
after 7 p.m. Thursday.
Leo
July 23-Aug. 22: Romance fills Sunday/
Monday – or pleasure, or beauty or charming kids or
a fine creative surge. But these days also ring the bell
of change – a silent bell, that hints at employment or
health changes. You’ll need to find a way to align your
ethics and idealism with your work: or to change your
work. Tackle chores Tuesday/Wednesday, when this
“work change” is highlighted..) Thursday/Friday bring
relationships, opportunities and challenges. Physical
intimacy, financial growth, research and commitment
fill Saturday. This good week moves from romance to
recognition/approach to bonding.
Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Your home – and changes
to it that arise via love, children – fill Sunday to
Wednesday. For example, news of pregnancy might
arrive. Or, if single, you might sense how love could
change your living arrangements.Tuesday/Wednesday
nudge you into a romantic, creative mood – avoid
temperament, disruption. Tackle chores Thursday/
Friday – great luck here (e.g., your efforts earn a boss’
praise) AFTER 7 p.m. Thursday (PDT). Relationships,
opportunities, challenges, opposition or co-operation,
new horizons – these arise in a new way Saturday. All
week, sex and finances need commitment.

March 31 - April 6, 2013
Libra
Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Serious relationship
themes fill this week and the next two. You could
meet your life mate, or make momentous decisions
regarding partnership. Sunday/Monday seems like
a casual, conversational, travel/errand filled time,
but deeper down the cosmos is whispering about
your abode, your family, and deep change. Can
you accept, find or keep love while your home is
under change? Can you grasp opportunities while
your home keeps you tied to one place? Examine
this Tuesday/Wednesday, then begin a new path or
project in the domestic or real estate area. Romance,
creativity soar late week!
Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: The general accent lies on
work, health, and dependents’ needs. Chase money
during a smooth, lucky Sunday/Monday. (Monday’s a
bit of a dud for Europe and the Americas.) Your work role
might change: that’s okay. Midweek brings errands,
calls, visits, paperwork and casual acquaintances
– act calmly, not impetuously: accidents possible.
Head for home Thursday/Friday (at work, deal with
foundations, structures – and nurturing less senior
co-workers). Your investment, realty luck are high
Thursday night AFTER seven. A whiff of romance perks
you up Saturday: go out, find pleasure!
Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The weeks ahead
emphasize romance – in a significant way, as more
than the usual number of single Sages will open the
door to marriage now or in June.Your energy, charisma
and effectiveness (and timing) are strong Sunday/
Monday: you’ll attract attention. But you also sense
change brewing in your money zone, which could
“threaten” romance or your children’s brightest future.
Meet these changes head-on Tuesday/Wednesday. If
you need a new approach, method or job, find/start it,
now. Communications, travel, paperwork and friendly
meetings fill late week. Home’s sweet, Saturday.
Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The main accent lies on
home, family, parent/kid relations, security, retirement
plans, nutrition, gardening, Mother Nature and soul.
Decide who/what stays, who goes. There’s nothing
wrong with sinking into a deep rest now. You’re weary
Sunday/Monday. Sunday’s excellent for holding a
confidential meeting with an advisor, trusted friend.
Your energy and charisma return somewhat Tuesday/
Wednesday, but luck’s rather mixed, so advance with
diplomacy. Chase money (or spend) Thursday AFTER
7 p.m. PDT, or Friday morning. Saturday’s for curiosity,
short trips, casual acquaintances.
Aquarius
Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Friendly meetings,
communications, visits and short trips keep you busy
all week. This is a good time to upgrade your phone
or computer system. (Not Sunday, nor April 9 or 16.)
Sunday/Monday bring friends, popularity, social joys,
wish fulfillment, optimism and happiness. Deep down,
Sunday through Wednesday, you might sense that
your relationship with government or head office is
changing, and with it your status – this can be up or
down, choose which you want. Lie low, rest Tuesday/
Wednesday. Your energy and charisma soar Thursday/
Friday – get out, contact VIPs. Shop Saturday.
Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The monthly accent
lies on money, earnings, spending and possessions.
This is a significant time for these, so do all you can
to set this area on a solid, growth course. Study the
influence of education, legalities, international trends,
and your cultural/ethnic group on, for instance, your
earning capacity (especially Sunday and Tuesday).
Your career, ambitions, reputation and relations
with important people are highlighted Sunday (best)
and Monday. Midweek brings joy, popularity, wish
fulfillment – with a few snags. Rest, plan Thursday/
Friday. Saturday, you’re the star!
