quickly became bored. I came across a book of magic
tricks that I had received as a gift, and ever since that day I have
been hooked.” Today, Etienne has well over a decade of professional
performing experience. His love and passion for the art of magic has
taken him all over the globe. Etienne’s performances have won him
several prestigious awards, including CNY Magician of the Year and
Stage Magic Champion from the Magicians’ Alliance of Eastern States.
Currently, Etienne stars in his own critically acclaimed illusion show,

General Information
Las Vegas is a destination for fun and entertainment. This is the city that attracts more than 36 million visitors a year
by offering the grandest hotels, the biggest stars in entertainment, the highest caliber of award-winning chefs and, of
course, the brightest lights. Las Vegas has become one of the premium world-class shopping destinations in the country.
No other city offers its choice of shows and performers. Fashions from designers from all over the world are available in
trendy boutiques, which are situated right next to discount malls. In Las Vegas, you’re also never far from a golf course.
There are many reasons why Las Vegas commands the title “The Entertainment Capital of the World” and the Wynn
Encore Las Vegas is surrounded by many celebrated resorts and attractions.
Local Attractions
Bellagio Fountains This light and sound show,
coupled with the fountain display, takes place in
front of the Bellagio Hotel and is acceptable for
all ages.
Eiffel Tower Replica The view from this
vantage point is amazing! Top off your visit by
having dinner in the tower restaurant. Take
a virtual tour at the base of the Paris Las
Vegas.
Las Vegas Space Flights The zero gravity
Las Vegas experience is now available for
those who wish to feel weightless. A specially-designed Boeing 727 creates
the effects of a real space flight including
flying smaller parabolas that recreate lunar
gravity.
Madame Tussauds Millions of people have
flocked through the doors of Madame Tussauds since it first opened over 200 years
ago, and it remains just as popular as ever.
There are many reasons for this enduring
success, but at the heart of it all is good, oldfashioned curiosity. Today’s visitors are sent
on a unique, emotionally-charged journey
through the realms of the powerful and famous. The museum-style ropes and poles are
4 gone so guests can truly get up close and personal with A-list celebrities,
sporting legends, political heavyweights, and historical icons, reliving the
times, events and moments that made the world talk about them.
Big Shot at the Stratosphere For those looking for a thrill, add this
to your list of things to do. The Big Shot ride at the Stratosphere Hotel will
launch you 160 feet straight up in a mere 2.5 seconds with a speed of
about 45 mph, which is basically 4Gs of force. Then drop to 0Gs and bungee up and down to return back to the launch pad. Beware that this ride is
not for the faint of heart!
For details on all attractions, visit www.visitlasvegas.com.

* Do not join MPS if you have allergies to making money or being happy. Ask your doctor if you are
healthy enough to join MPS. Failure to join MPS may cause such common side effects as nausea and
vomiting, shingles and scurvy, temporary or permanent blindness and convulsions leading to a coma.
Rarely, with prolonged use, other side effects may occur such as limited bladder control, loss of feeling at
the extremities and festering boils. Some patients have reported changes in behavior, agitation, depressed

For Substantive Networking
As a member of NAELA, you have the opportunity to participate in distinctive Sections
which provide information and networking opportunities specific to your practice and areas

listservs, Section Group libraries, and at face-to-face NAELA conferences. The annual fee
per Section is $60.
Advocacy/Litigation Section
The Advocacy/Litigation Section addresses the interests of
members who are involved in various types of advocacy and
litigation efforts as part of their Elder and Special Needs Law
practice. The Section publishes its newsletter, The Advocate,
twice per year.

educating NAELA members about the importance of planning, financing, accessing, coordinating, and advocating
for all potential benefits, both public and private, to ensure
that seniors and people with disabilities have all the financial
support that is available to maintain their continued independence. The Section publishes a newsletter twice per year.
Guardianship/Capacity Section
This Section explores the issues related to the legal adjudication of capacity, the administration of guardianship estates,
and the guardian’s fiduciary liability as well as the attorney’s fiduciary liability in the guardianship process. Section
members network by sharing information on case law and
other related materials in its newsletter, The Bulletin, which is
published twice per year.
Health Care Section
The Health Care Section is committed to providing education and support to NAELA attorneys for their efforts to
advocate for and assist clients to protect patients’ rights and

and related matters. Section members will share cases and
analysis of cases they have been involved with as well as other
articles on developments dealing with Trusts. The Section

Healthy people are often flippant about not wanting to live any longer if they ever get very sick —
but when faced with such a harsh reality, most
fight with everything they’ve got to hold onto life
as long as possible. This informal discussion
explores the importance of accessing family dynamics and belief systems about life, illness and
death, and the psychology of the will to survive
and acceptance of being ready to die.
Encore Ballroom 3
This interactive session examines how guardians
make, and should make, critical decisions about
finances, health, and long-term care (including
institutionalization vs. community setting). Panelists will begin with discussion about the trade-off
between substituted judgment and best interest,
and assuming the risks that flow from honoring
the older person’s preferences. Practice experience and ideas of participants will feed into the

health care professionals. Learn the difference
between normal aging vs. early signs of dementia; how to bring a family out of denial about a
loved one’s yet-to-be diagnosed dementia and
understand the importance of buying longterm care insurance before diagnosis; effective

Financial literacy, currently at an all-time low in
the United States, is the skill set of understanding basic financial mechanisms (such
as banks, checking accounts, and interest),
as well as car loans, credit cards, and other
necessities of modern life. Clients with special
needs suffer even greater impact; they often
lack sufficient training in basic financial tools
and instruments to make the right decisions
and to ensure their financial well being. This
program will consider assistance to the special
needs client; programs, services, and tools that
are available; and a lawyer’s role in helping a
client make the right decisions.

John J. Regan Writing Award
Special Needs Leadership Award
The John J. Regan Writing Award will be
presented on Thursday, May 19, at 4:15
p.m., prior to General Session II, located in
Encore Ballroom 4-8. Professor Jeffrey N.
Pennell receives this year’s award for his
article, “Special Needs Trusts: Reflections
on Common Boilerplate Provisions,” published in the Fall 2010 NAELA Journal. The
award was established in 1996 in memory
of John J. Regan, a long-time NAELA member and Fellow, and a pioneer in Elder Law.
The award is meant to encourage quality
submissions to NAELA Journal from NAELA
members and non-members.
NAELA presents its second Special Needs
Leadership Award to Renee Wallace of
Houston, Texas. The award will be presented on Friday, May 20, during the Business Meeting Luncheon, located in Encore
Ballroom 4-8. The Special Needs Leadership Award is to given to an individual who
makes a significant contribution to the lives
of those with Special Needs.
Theresa Award
Renee is the founder of Vita-Living Inc.,
a Houston-based, non-profit organization providing services and supports for
children and adults with intellectual and
developmental disabilities. Vita-Living
seeks to provide each of its clients with a
safe and stimulating environment, as well
as a meaningful place in the community.
Renee is also the author of Creative Caring,
a biographical account of the challenges
she and her husband faced in raising their
special needs son Ricky and establishing
Vita-Living.
The 2011 honoree for outstanding contribution to persons with special needs is
NAELA Member Renée Colwill Lovelace,
Esq. Theresa Award Honorees seem to
all have one thing in common: they all
have a blood-line of community service.
The Theresa Foundation which supports
children with special needs was established
by Past President Vincent J. Russo and
Susan Russo, in memory of their daughter,
Theresa. The presentation of the award will
take place on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at
8:00 a.m., prior to General Session VII.
Cohn Sisters’ Scholarship for
Patient Advocacy
We honor NAELA member Renée Colwill
Lovelace, Esq. of The Lovelace Law Firm,
Dripping Springs, Texas, for her outstanding
community service. In addition to providing quality estate planning, Ms. Lovelace
is a celebrated disability rights advocate
who has served on numerous boards and
committees. Renée worked to establish a
mental health law project with the Dallas
Bar Association, has taken many individual
pro bono cases, and handled corporate
work for nonprofit organizations. She was
one of the primary team members drafting
and establishing the Arc of Texas master
pooled trusts, and wrote and compiled
a 1,000-page guide for Texas attorneys
to use as a resource when representing
families of children with disabilities. Renée
also recently wrote the book Pooled Trust
Options: A Guidebook, published in 2010,
a project of the National Plan Alliance.
Presidents’ Recognition Award
Each year the current NAELA President
selects an outstanding individual to receive
the President’s Recognition Award. This
year’s award is presented to NAELA member Kevin Urbatsch, San Francisco, Calif.
NAELA will make a donation to the organization of choice Kevin’s choice. The award
is presented during the Annual Business
Meeting on Friday, May 20.
Outstanding Chapter Member
Award
In all groups, there are always one or two
members who stand apart from the rest
based on their willingness to do whatever is
needed to get the job done. The Outstanding Chapter Member Award is presented
annually to that NAELA Chapter member.
The award is in recognition of the outstanding initiative and leadership the member
demonstrates on behalf of the Chapter.
Congratulations to all of the Outstanding
Chapter Member Award recipients. Their individual acceptance speeches can be found
on the conference USB Drive after speaker
biographies.
Jessica L. Fisher, Mechanicsburg, Pa., and
Mark G. Wermerskirchen, Willmar, Minn.,
are this year’s winners of the Cohn Sisters’
Scholarship for Patient Advocacy. The
scholarship is available through the NAELA
Foundation in memory of Vivian Cohn Smith
and Lorrie Cohn, sisters of NAELA Fellow
Helen Cohn Needham. This annual scholarship is available to Elder Law attorneys
who are unable to afford to attend a NAELA
Annual Meeting, and who would use the
training to assist and advocate on behalf of
the disabled and incapacitated.
The Cohn Sisters’ Scholarships for Patient
Advocacy are made possible through the
continuing generous donations made in the
names of Vivian and Lorrie to the NAELA
Memorial Fund, by their family and friends,
Needham, Mitnick & Pollack, PLC, and
other individuals and law firms.
Young/New Attorneys Section
Conference Scholarship
Congratulations to Kristen Prull Moonan,
the winner of the second Young/New
Attorneys Section Conference Scholarship.
The scholarship was established in 2010
as a means to encourage newer NAELA
members to attend a national conference.
The criteria for the scholarship are: 1) the
entrant must have never attended a NAELA
national conference, and 2) the entrant
must be willing to write a brief article
regarding the experience for the Young/
New Attorneys’ newsletter. Please look for
Kristen and ensure that her first conference
experience will leave her wanting to
attend more! For information about future
scholarships contact the Young/New
Attorneys Section.
Recognition of NAELA Members
NAELA would like to recognize those celebrating a Membership Anniversary this year.
The dedication and support of members is
integral to the growth and advancement of
