I find it almost impossible that the year 2014 is complete. The time flew by like an old roadster racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats… very fast! Just think, 2015 is almost here. Remember 2000? At the turn of the last century all computers and the government were going to shut down, so we were warned. I still remember the panic many people had, wanting to leave the cities and stay in the country for fear of electrical failure. The 2014 POCI convention in Kansas is history. The Modified Chapter once again had some great cars represented at Wichita. How can we beat this in Louisville? First of all, please bring out your cars and trucks to the event. The convention is a time for revisiting old friends and making new friends who share the same interest of Pontiac, GMC, and Oaklands. I am sure some of us may have a conflict, but if we can, let’s try to visit Kentucky. I am one of the guys who is caught in a conflict. No not a wedding, graduation, or a birthday. Having to choose between POCI and KKOA Leadsled Spectacular. Since I am now the president of two major chapters, I am heading south instead of west. It is a tough choice but one had to be made, and I picked POCI. All of us that are on the board of the Modified Chapter want to thank all of you for joining our club. Let’s keep the Modified Chapter going strong. It is all up to our members. We want to wish each and every one of our members a safe, sound and very healthy New Year. As always, Alan needs input from all of us to make this an interesting newsletter. So let’s get our pens and cameras out and send Alan something special. He will be very grateful for this gift. In closing, I want to wish you all the best in 2015 and I will see everyone in Kentucky. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Custom & Hot Rod Books by Alan Mayes The above books are available at www.olskoolrodz.com. Chapter #7 – The “Dare to be Different” Chapter – Founded 1976 Page 3 Driving Miss Charlotte (in a ’41 Pontiac convertible) - Charles Ide Thanks for asking about our summer, Lou! I would love to share some of the tales and pictures of our latest driving adventures in the old modified Pontiac. We now have 6200 miles on the 1941 Torpedo Convertible since we debuted the car in 2012 at the Detroit Autorama. My youngest of four daughters is Charlotte. She was eleven years old last month. She took over the “shotgun” seat about four years ago from her sister Cati, who is now fifteen. I have been very fortunate that at least a couple of my daughters have liked hanging around with Dad and going to car shows and swap meets. Since we saw you in your station wagon at the Pontiac Nationals, in Dayton, Ohio, Summer 2013, we have put another 3000 miles on the 1941 Torpedo Deluxe 8 Convertible. We started off the 2014 year in May with a trip to the Goodguy’s Show in Nashville, Tennessee. Our nine-hour drive down was uneventful except that it rained the entire way and by the time we pulled into LP Field in Nashville (home of the Tennessee Titans NFL team), the car was filthy and the whitewalls looked black. Charlotte jumped right in and helped me wash and dry the car and polish chrome. We had a great time hanging out at the show and in the honky-tonks on Fifth Avenue with some friends who had brought their cars up from Florida. We left Nashville on Sunday in the beautiful sunshine, only to get caught in a three-hour traffic jam south of Louisville. Three hours to go six miles and there was nowhere to escape. Thankfully the car idled through the mess and we made it home at midnight. We even made a quick stop at the Corvette museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Charlotte was a trooper even though her dad was getting panic stricken as cars all around were running out of gas or overheating. She told me that it was the worst traffic jam she had ever been in and I told her that at the age of fifty, it was the worst traffic jam I had ever been in, too! Chapter #7 – The “Dare to be Different” Chapter – Founded 1976 Page 4 Thankfully we made it home to learn that my alternator was only putting out about 27 amps and that we had killed the battery. I installed a new battery and a 150 amp Powermaster alternator for our next outing. When you are at any car show, whether the POCI Convention or a local or national show - Goodguys, NSRA, KKOA, etc. – and you see a modified Pontiac, Oakland, or GMC, ask the owner if he’s a member of POCI & tell him about our club & chapter. POCI membership applications & extra copies of Smoke Signals are available from Paul Bergstrom at the Club Office. Carry a few in your car. Smoke Signals is the only all-Pontiac magazine left and it’s a great one, and a good recruiting tool, as well.
