A Message from Our President — Rina Thaler
July—August, 2012
The most rewarding thing to me about being a part of the Art League of Ocean City is working with the other volunteers who make this organization a dynamic force. From our board members to our members who are willing to work a
few hours a month at the front desk, our volunteers are our greatest asset!!
June was a very busy month. On the 1st two Saturdays, we hosted a “Play it Safe” tie-dye shirt event for several hundred kids. Then we participated in the 12th annual Arts Alive festival in Northside Park. presented by the Town of
Ocean City’s department of Special Events. The ALOC had a special tent with 10 of our members artwork. Art League
volunteers walked the festival and giving breaks to the over 70 artists and artisans at the event. It was great getting to
know the members who volunteered their time. Some of them were artists who had recently joined the organization, and
it was wonderful to be able to put a face with a name. Others were long time volunteers who are not artists, but have a
love of the arts. It is people like that who make our organization a vital part of the Ocean City community.
This dedication and volunteer spirit can be found at every Art League event. We also conducted our second “Brushes
and Bubbly” event, a fun evening where volunteers help people with little or no painting experience create a finished
work of art. Our Plein Air event attracted artists from all over the region to paint outdoors. All of these events are run by
dedicated volunteers.
So thank you to all of the volunteers who make this organization great! You have truly enriched my life and your own
by the connections you have forged. If you have not yet signed up to help at any of our events, I encourage you to get
involved. I promise you will get back more then you give. I look forward to working side by side with all of you as we
move into our new art center which is currently under construction. Don’t wait for it to be finished to get involved.

The annual Shirley Hall student show was held on
May 19-20th. Work was judged by Shirley’s
daughters, Betsy Hall-Harrison (left above) and
Barbara Shade (right above) .
First place in the high school competition went to
Christine Woods of Snow Hill High. Taylor Bradford
also a Snow Hill student won second prize. Worcester Prep student, Taylor Harman, was third place
winner. Honorable mentions went to Keontay Poulson, Tavoris Johnson, Mary Kate Larwood and Gabe
Power.
Middle School winners were Elizabeth Cimetta, first
place; Jessica Wharton, second; and Joanna Buchheim for third place. They are all Stephen Decatur
Middle School students.

The Art League took part in Snow Hill Elementary School’s art event “The Big Draw” on May
14th. 72 students were divided into 5 classes
where they learned painting, weaving, theater,
dancing and zumba. Our member, Stasia Heubeck, representing the ALOC, led the painting
session and said it included students learning 5-6
new words such as abstract, realism, primary,
secondary, Van Gogh and Kandinsky. She was
impressed with the attentive kids and thanks
Becky Brunet, Judy Center and several middle
school students for helping.

with Laurie Daddona— Wednesday 11-4 pm,
Thursday and Friday—11-3 pm. $135 members/$145
non-members. Bring new excitement and expression
to your artwork through mixed media. Learn to loosen up, break through creative blocks, and enjoy the
pure process of painting. In this three day workshop
we will use watercolors, acrylics, pastes, collage materials, image transfers, and most of all courage to
step outside the lines and listen to our inner voices
and create intuitively. This is a fun, energetic workshop with lots of experimental technique. Bring a
lunch and a “What If” attitude!

“Studio Joy” by Daddona
July 26-27 — Design and Color Workshop with
Dolores Andrew, 9:30-3:30 each day with an hour
lunch break. $55 members/$65 non-members + a $6
materials fee. Color and design are very personal
subjects. The two words may sound intimidating, but
with some guidelines on their meaning and use, they
can be most helpful in analyzing and improving our
work. With lecture, demonstration, some handouts,
and a few simple exercises, this class will guide us to
a better understanding of these important principles
in art. One day will be spent on each subject. Dolores
Andrew works in a variety of media, including pen
and ink, watercolor, pastel, charcoal and scratchboard. See her work on her website

November 12 and 13—Pastels with Stan
Sperlak—9-4 each day. $125 members/$145 nonmembers. Includes Sunday evening, Nov. 11 meet
the artist with demonstration and slide show. Stan’s
workshops have been called Art Adventures for beginners to advanced artists. He excels in teaching students how to see, analyze and re-interpret a scene,
how to bring from within yourself paintings that reflect your emotion and connection to your subject
and produce believable images. Stan constantly
weaves lessons from life, history and nature into all
his critiques and lectures. You will come away from
the workshop with a new appreciation of the world
around you! But most importantly, Stan shows you
all of the methods he has perfected in manipulating

Emmy Challenger, a new
member of the ALOC
Board of Directors, has been active in community
organizations here and in Pennsylvania where she
raised her family.
She has been married for 54 years to Bishopville
artist, Ed Challenger. They moved to the Eastern
Shore in 2001, following their daughters who had
careers here.
Although she does not consider herself an artist,
Emmy has done shell craft, basketry and knitting.
She has created a beautiful, relaxing garden around
the pool. “Ed is the artist”, says Emmy, “I am the
gardener.” The couple likes to bike and travel and
visit museums in every city and country they visit.
She admires the Impressionists and local artist,
Debra Rolig.
Emmy was very active with her town’s library in
Pennsylvania, which saw its rise from a humble
bookmobile to its own building. She also served on
the board of AIG in Salisbury, helping with their National Show, gala and house tour. Now, as part of the
Art League of Ocean City, Emmy looks forward to
its exciting future.

MEMBER NEWS
Judy Benton is currently showing 28 pieces of her
work in several mediums at the Ocean Pines Library. Her show can be viewed through July 31st.
Marian Bickerstaff recently won 1st place at the
Worcester Co. Arts Council juried show for her pastel “The Wave” and was the featured artist in the
Daily Times on June 16th.
Eight Ocean Pines artists were painting in the gardens on the June 14th Ocean Pines Garden Tour.
They and two additional artists donated work for a
silent auction to benefit the Garden Club’s scholarship fund.
PLEIN AIR 2012
Thirty-three artists from the region battled heat, rain, wind, sun and bugs to compete in the “Paint OC” Plein Air Paint
Out on June 21-23, 2012. The 3-day event included a separate 2-hour Quick Draw at Northside Park and culminated on
Sunday evening with a Wet Pain Sale at Somerset Street.
The Quick Draw event, judged by Brad Hudson from UMES, winners were: 1st Prize—Cheryl Wisbrock , 2nd Prize—
Rina Thaler, 3rd Prize— Sandra Esham, Honorable Mention—Marian Bickerstaff.
Judging the Plein Air art was Laura Era from the Troika Gallery in Easton. The winners were: 1st Prize—Tara Funk
Grim, 2nd Prize— Dot Braun, 3rd Prize—David Simpson; Honorable Mention—Yelena Macleod, Sandra Esham,
Gerilyn Gaskill, and Barbara Septula .
The Artists’ Choice award went to Tara Funk Grim. Special thanks to Paige Ruby who chaired the committee and to the
OCDC, the HMRA, Jan Bain and LaHacianda for the prize money.

“Building the Arts” Capital Campaign Update
If you haven’t been by the construction site of the new Ocean City Center for the Arts, make a point to
drive by in the next few weeks. The foundation is in and the framing has begun, giving form to the new building. Construction is set to be complete by the end of the year and then the real fun will begin.
We hope you take this opportunity to join in building a legacy by donating to the “Building the Arts” fund.
An account has been established at the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore to administer the funds.
Our goal for the campaign was to raise $500,000.00 in addition to the $200,000 the Art League contributed
from the home tours and the $600,000 the Town of Ocean City has contributed. Our goal is in sight with over
$375,000 raised so far.
We have waited for so long to build an art center, but its success will be determined by the support it has
from the community. Permanent naming opportunities are available for gifts ranging from $2500 and upward
and pledges can be made over a period of three years. In addition, a “Wall of Honor” will be displayed at the
new facility listing capital campaign donors from $1,000 and up.
Whether you give $10 or $10,000, every donation is significant and will enable us to broaden the scope of
programs we offer to enhance lives in our community. We have even had members ask people to contribute to
the fund in lieu of birthday gifts. So make your contribution to this community partnership today, it will be an
investment that will pay off for years to come. Contribution can be sent to:
