ISSUE 9 Heather Billington (Head of Art) organised a Christmas Card competition. The cards were judged by David Tottingham, Chair of Governors. The winning Christmas card design (left) is by Ryan Speight-Dewar from Millside and Emily Seagrove at The Gateway is runner up. Apollo students spread cheer by entertaining the residents at Applegarth Care Home with carols and Christmas music led by David Smart. Dear Colleagues, Congratulations for making it through possibly the longest half-term ever and once again demonstrating just why the College is such a success. It’s has been a term of change with new leadership at Millside and Springboard and the first term for Artemis, so as well as the demands of the increasingly challenging cohort and the long term you have had the inevitable settling in period to deal with too. The home to school transport scheme also came into play this term and has been a huge success. There has also been a tremendous amount of work carried out by the Finance and Admin Team to get us set up for when we become a Trust in our own right. Thank you to all staff for your hard work, commitment and positivity – it does not go unnoticed. Best wishes to everyone and please enjoy your very well deserved Christmas Break. Helen Once again a healthy turnout on another sunny celebration at our annual garden party. As usual the food and drink – including our popular coffee cake made in the Schoolroom – went down a treat . Another November another new record for our Children in Need fundraising efforts. Bookmarks made for Children in Need by children in need helped to raise our total to over £560! 2 This half term, the learners have been attending the local library and reading Of Mice and Men. This has been a real success as the learners enjoy reading together as a group at the library and learning about the characters in the book. All Gateway staff took part in a Swiss Roll Bake off that was judged by a group of learners. Taste and appearance were scored. The competition was close run, with the learners judging that Andy’s cake was the winner! Other staff thought it was a FIX!! Learners have taken part in a number of workshops as part of the Gateway programme. Turning Point Learners participated in two workshops on Drugs education. The course covered types of drugs, their effects, alcohol and personal safety. First Aid A group of 12 learners and staff successfully completed the Emergency First Aid at Work course, delivered by Tigerlily Training. More courses to be run throughout the year. Learners have had 1:1 meetings with Adviza to discuss their career and moving on options. We have also been working with Learning to Work, giving learners a chance to take part in the Work Experience programme, which involves some workshops preparing for their placements, and then taking part in a 1 week placement, with the first group of learners starting in December. The foundation learners took part in a mini project learning about World War II, finishing off with a trip to the Imperial War Museum in London. They learnt about the Holocaust, the Allies and Axis powers, the Blitz, the Battle of Britain and what life was like in Britain during WWII. Youth Parliament This workshop encouraged learners to have their say about issues that are important to them and the area that they live in. It was hosted by Giovanni from Slough Youth Services, and the topics created a lively debate. 3 Rotunda staff have been busy this term across the college and out in local schools working with a wide range of young people and helping them maintain their school places. Back in October we supported Macmillan Cancer Charity and Katie supported the young people in their food technology lessons to make cakes and biscuits which could be sold for charity. We had a guess the amount of sweets in a jar. As part of the charity fundraising, staff were nominated by placing donations against their name and the two staff with the highest amount pledged were soaked with sponges! Jon and Natalie received the highest votes…………we think Jon got significantly more sponges thrown at him though! The Rotunda has said ‘goodbye’ this term to Kevin Davies who has left his role as momentum coordinator to join SEBDOS. Kevin is a huge loss but we know that he will be successful in his new role and we look forward to seeing him working with our young people. Abs has been promoted to momentum co-ordinator and has already completed her first course with huge success. We will also say goodbye to Dan Russell at the end of this term. Dan joined as a SCM and has been promoted to Interim coordinator. Dan is a huge loss to the team but we wish him all the best for his future career – we know you will be amazing! 4 The Rotunda welcomes two new coaches to the team – Huma and Victor, both a little camera shy at the moment but we will post pics soon! David Smart and Apollo students gave a demonstration music lesson in front of parents, friends and staff. Students were on drums, keyboards and guitars. Everyone joined in singing Christmas songs and all enjoyed the Reggae session at the end! Students and staff had tours of both BCA and East Berks College this term. We ate lunch in the canteen to help gain a feel of college life. Students have now applied for courses including Animal Care, Hairdressing, Public Services and IT. Apollo visited the Tate Britain and worked with artist, Johnny Briggs. We were asked to draw a face with our eyes closed and we produced what looked like modern art! Apollo parents attended a Parent Support Group Meeting at Kitchen Craft where they heard a talk by Adviza staff about post-16 options. Parents were served tea and cakes prepared by Apollo students during their weekly cookery lesson. Tour of the main sites of London by bus and boat on a sunny day in Autumn. 5 Chris Ramsey, Queen's Park Rangers Manager presented students with their special Awards after giving a motivational speech, focusing on being single minded in order to succeed. The Pitstop Awards Evening was held on 21st October with input from all 3 training centres; Kitchen Craft, Construction and Motor Vehicle, making it a successful event. PUPILS celebrated their success at this awards ceremony complete with a Ferrari and a hot buffet provided by pupils and staff of Kitchen Craft. Over a hundred awards were presented to students from local schools recognising certifications and qualifications in vocational subjects achieved across all three subjects areas. Chris Ramsey presents to Kitchen Craft student, Katy Kester. Trainee Chef Of The Year went to Shannon Richardson. Construction Pupil Of The Year went to Shahzaib Nawas. Motor Vehicle Pupil Of The Year was awarded to Ridley Bregmestre. . Construction Group Of The Year was won by Year 11 of The Westgate School. Motor Vehicle Group Of The year went to Arbour Vale School. Highest Attainment was won by Harley Jensch. Most Motivated Pupil was Belal Kiyani. And the Overall Student Of The Year Award went to Cameron Davies. 6 The 2015 Kitchen Craft Pastry course was a great success, in fact oversubscribed. Members of the general public paid to attend this course to learn how to cook and bake. For example sour dough, profiteroles, Danish pastries, gateaux and chocolates were just some of the products produced over the seven week course. It’s been a particularly busy term here at Pitstop. The website was revamped and launched ready for September. Here is the link to the website – appreciate any feedback, http://sloughpitstopproject.org.uk/ Year 10 Motor Vehicle Students from Slough & Eton went to Wycombe Swan for a presentation called ‘SAFE DRIVE STAY ALIVE’. A hard hitting presentation to make young people think about excess speed, not wearing a seat belt, distractions such as mobile phones, peer pressure and drug/alcohol impairment. Young drivers are particularly at high risk on the roads. Pupils went to visit the Kier Construction Site here on the Slough Trading Estate to give them insight into working on a building site. This was the second visit to this particular site and pupils were able to track how work at the site is progressing since they visited previously. Slough and Eton pupils have completed the brick laying unit and they are now focussing on carpentry operations this term. 7 Students and staff had a very social time baking cakes and eating them! We raised £110 towards this very good cause. A special thank you to Mr Tidey for working with Activate Student Voice Group to organise this. All learners who gained enough points were rewarded by a trip to Paintballing. Staff and learners had a great day enjoying the addictive point-scoring games. Every week the learners have the opportunity to take part in sport. This term the learners have been involved in golf, skiing, bowling and a visit to Jump In. 8 November - Olivia Brown October - Chloe Wenn September - Rachel Dicken Each month we recognise the efforts of a student who has gone above and beyond in their academic studies. Well done to the following learners: The summer holidays have come to an end and the start of a new academic year has arrived! We have welcomed our new year 7’s who are settling really well into the safe motivating learning environment that we provide. Also we have welcomed back all our previous Millside students who have hit the ground running, getting them off to an excellent academic start. All initial baseline assessments were conducted successfully and we are guiding all our students on the road to success. We are very pleased to welcome all the new staff who have started this term such as Ashley Fletcher, our new ICT teacher who has previous years of experience in SEBD settings. Sam Lock, our new KS3 teacher who was previously a sports coach mentor and now has joined the teaching staff after becoming qualified. Sandy Crosk, our new KS3 teacher who has years of expertise working in secondary settings. Also Harley O’Sullivan and Viola Richardson, our new sports coach mentors who have a range of qualified youth and community skills working with young people in and around the local area. And finally Jamie Rockman, our new Head of Centre who has transferred his quality of leadership and management skills over from Springboard to us here at Millside. As a reward for the students who meet the required behaviour and attainment points, we have branched out our Friday trips to a new organisation called JUMP. This is going really well for our students and the staff at JUMP are really praising the athletic skills the students demonstrate. Millside and JUMP are building a great relationship and will continue to work together in harmony. We have started a new student council panel which has been set-up and run by Vernon Lyndsay. The students are having some great discussions and debates about whether or not we should implement school uniform, different types of trips, and ideas on how to raise some money for luxuries the students would like to have in school. This is really making the students have a great sense of responsibility and ownership. Thank you to all students who are taking part and making this happen. 9 Named the ‘Palm Tree of Dreams’, Springboard students were asked to write down their likes and hopes for the future and then place them on the tree so they would be visually reminded of their future goals. Comments ranging from having an X-box, designer sportswear to gaining good grades, having a good job and earning lots of money to buy nice things for themselves and their families, were just a few written. To promote college cohesion and inter-school partnerships, the Football Academy led by Paul Foad and Gavin Mernagh, arranged three football matches during October with local secondary schools. Their first game, against Wexham School proved challenging but we came away with a win. “As Year 11 matches go it was very straightforward to referee and your boys were a credit to themselves and the work you are doing with them”, remarked Matt Shuttle, Head of PE at Wexham School. More matches will be organised during the Spring term. Congratulations to Paul Foad who is getting married on New Year’s Eve. We wish Gemma all the best as she takes her maternity leave. Well done to Tony Ford for representing the Hospital School in the ‘Education for Everybody’ magazine. The new term starts on 4th January 2016. All staff are back in centres. For further dates it is important that Congratulations to Michael Woloszyn who everybody looks at the Haybrook had a baby boy named Max Antony and Calendar which can be found on the Ross Mullady who had a baby girl named Rhea. staff shared Q:\ drive.
