HONORING MONTAUK’S ARTISTS
This year, in the place of individual honorees, the Montauk Playhouse
Community Center Foundation has chosen to honor Montauk’s artists. The
natural beauty of our town has left an indelible impression upon artists
and, in turn, artists have left an indelible impression upon our community.
For the greater part of a century, Montauk has attracted a certain type of
creative person. In the words of Jimmy Buffett:
“I love Montauk, not only to play in the waves, but to borrow
from the color and the culture of the local population ideas
and images that turn into songs and stories. As important as
this kind of environment is to the established artist, it is even
more important to the young, aspiring artists”
When completed, the Playhouse’s new Cultural Center will provide a
showcase for musical, visual, and performing artists. In the mean time, we
provided a smaller forum to promote the generosity of Montauk’s artist
community.
From July 11th-30th, the Foundation curated a Pop-Up Gallery at 478
West Lake Drive and launched a companion online mobile bidding site,
filled with donated artwork and experiences from dozens of our local
Supporting Artists (listed on the opposite page).
This year’s honorees provide, in Mr. Buffett’s words, “the color and the
culture” for Montauk. They are also proving to be the models of giving
back to the community. These local artists have donated their time and
works to help the Foundation reach its goal. Tonight, we honor their
creativity and generosity.

Dear Friends,
Thank you for joining us at the annual Gala for the
Playhouse! This event has come to be known to
many as “Montauk’s Party of the Summer,” but it’s
much more than that: it’s the coming together of our
community to support the completion of the Montauk
Playhouse Community Center and to honor those
who have played a role in supporting that effort.
Tonight we are proud to honor Montauk’s artists. For most of Montauk’s
history, they have been as essential to the town’s identity as our beaches
and open space. They shape the color – literally – of our community. This
year, we honor them, and their generous support of the Foundation’s
efforts.
Montauk is a special place, geographically and emotionally. There is a
sense of community here that is hard to find elsewhere. We’re a group
of year-rounders, snowbirds, second homeowners and visitors who share
a love for this place we all call home. And in that love, we step up, we
support, we rally. Tonight we hope you’ll do the same for our honorees
and for the community center project.
Committees, staff, and countless volunteers have been hard at work on
tonight’s event. Many, many thanks to all for their efforts.
Enjoy!

Now we need everyone
to join us in this final
push to raise the funds
necessary to complete
construction. We CAN
do it with your support.
Aquatic Center featuring two pools
This is our chance to
come together, as
Montaukers, to define
our culture.
Our dream of creating a permanent home for theater, culture, arts, music,
aquatics, recreation, and community programs here in Montauk is closer
than ever before. In the past year:
We completed a business plan—with terrific input from the
community—that shows that our plan for the Playhouse is
financially feasible and sustainable.
Gallery Entrance Lobby
We hired a world class architect—Lee H. Skolnick Architecture
+ Design Partnership—who has taken our initial concept
drawings and turned them into an exciting, beautiful design
plan. (See the new architectural concept renderings above.)
M N TAU K
We engaged new supporters, who are committed to helping
us complete the Playhouse—along with the overwhelming
support of the members of our community.

Named on the National Register of Historic Places and the
Preservation League of New York’s “Seven to Save” list,
the MONTAUK PLAYHOUSE is as much a local character
as it is a lauded historic structure.
Mention of this iconic building conjures images ranging from the fashionably clad
tennis enthusiasts of the original 1929 Carl Fisher project, to World War II sailors
who used it as an assembly hall, to locals catching a flick in canvas director chairs
when it was the village movie house in the 1960s.
For many years the building sat empty awaiting its fate. In 1999 the Montauk
Playhouse Community Center Foundation took the helm and with enthusiastic
support from the community, the Town of East Hampton committed over 6 million
dollars to secure the future of the Playhouse.
Today, the exciting new development plans to complete the restoration of the
historic building with an Aquatic Center and multi-use Cultural Center are bringing
the Playhouse back to life as the heart of our community!

PLAYHOUSE
YOU B E LON G H E R E
WE’VE COME A LONG WAY... In 1999, the Montauk
Playhouse Community Center Foundation was born,
and an organized effort to save the historic Montauk
Playhouse and create a vibrant home for arts,
education, athletics and much needed community
and human services began.
Thanks to the efforts of the entire community, the
Montauk Playhouse has now been beautifully restored,
and facilities and services within half of the structure
have been up and running since spring 2006.
Now, exciting plans are underway for completing the
unfinished half of the Playhouse with an AQUATIC
CENTER and flexible-use CULTURAL CENTER. The
Foundation is working tirelessly to raise the funds
needed to complete the Playhouse.
Want to learn more about how you can make
this exciting and worthwhile project a reality?
