GONE GIRL • PREVIEW SCREENING
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2 AT 7:30PM
General Admission: $12 • Loft Members: $10
Please Note: We cannot accept passes or Groupons for this screening.
See David Fincher’s highly-anticipated new thrillerGone
Girl, starring Ben Affleck, before its national theatrical
release at this special New York Film Critics Series preview
screening featuring a captured-live post-film discussion
with best-sellingGone Girl novelist and screenwriter
Gillian Flynn, moderated by Rolling Stone film critic Peter
Travers! The New York Film Critics Series, broadcast to 50
selected major markets, takes place exclusively in cinemas
and is never available on TV or online.
The New York Film Critics Series presents a special preview of the muchbuzzed-about thriller Gone Girl!David Fincher’s film version of Gillian
Flynn’s phenomenally successful best-seller (adapted by the author)
is one wild cinematic ride – a perfectly cast and intensely compressed
portrait of a recession-era marriage contained within a devastating
depiction of celebrity/media culture, shifting gears as smoothly
as a Maserati 250F. Ben Affleck is Nick Dunne, whose wife Amy
(Rosamund Pike) goes missing on the day of their fifth anniversary.
Things only get worse when the intense media circus surrounding
the case casts a spotlight on Nick as a prime suspect in the case. Neil
Patrick Harris is Amy’s old boyfriend Desi, Carrie Coon is Nick’s sister
Margo, Kim Dickens is Detective Rhonda Boney, and Tyler Perry is
Nick’s superstar lawyer Tanner Bolt. At once a grand panoramic vision
of middle America, a uniquely disturbing exploration of the fault
lines in a marriage, and a comedy that starts black and keeps getting
blacker, Gone Girl is a gripping work of popular art by one of our best
filmmakers. (Dir. by David Fincher, 2014, USA, 145 mins., Rated R) Digital
The New York Film Critics Series is the first-ever live national
premiere screening series. It is dedicated to producing inspiring
events in a collaborative environment and to nurturing the longterm success of better, smarter movies. Each NYFCS screening brings
prestigious, live New York City screenings of soon-to-be-released
films to the best independent cinemas in America. These screening
events are moderated by Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers, and
include a preview screening of a new film prior to its national release,
interviews with talent from the film and special behind the scenes
content. These screenings are scheduled to take place once a month
and will happen approximately 12 times per year. Recent NYFCS
premieres and live chats with directors/stars have included such films
as Chef, Nebraska and American Hustle.
MONTY PYTHON’S THE
MEANING OF LIFE
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1 AT 7:00PM
Tired of questioning the meaning of life? Let the
twisted minds of Monty Python explain it all to
you in what is, without a doubt, the most tasteless
and outrageous of the Python feature films - a cinematic
miracle in which the cast merrily sing, dance and vomit their way through
the mysteries of the universe. (Dir. by Terry Jones, 1983, UK, 107 mins., Rated
R) Digital
MONTY PYTHON’S THE LIFE
OF BRIAN
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8 AT 7:00PM
“Blessed are the Cheesemakers!” Pythonite Graham
Chapman stars as Brian, Jesus’ next-door neighbor,
in one of the most hilariously dangerous comedies ever
made. Directed by Monty Python’s naked piano player
Terry Jones on the remains of leftover sets from Franco Zeffirelli’s epic
Jesus of Nazareth, The Life of Brian is a wacky religious satire (with musical
numbers!) combining Mel Brooks, the Marx Brothers and Thomas Paine’s
“Age of Reason”. (Dir. by Terry Jones, 1979, UK, 94 mins., Rated R) 35mm
AND NOW FOR SOMETHING
COMPLETELY PYTHON
EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT IN OCTOBER AT 7:00PM!
Regular Admission Prices
“And now for something completely different: a
man with a tape recorder up his brother’s nose.”
– Announcer, Monty Python’s Flying Circus
Always look on the bright side of life and prepare for a massive
month of Monty Python on the big screen as The Loft Cinema
presents a moving tribute to killer rabbits, silly walks and
dead parrots – it’s guaranteed to be more fun than the Spanish
Inquisition! Monty Python’s Flying Circus started as a television
show in 1969, growing exponentially in popularity with each
passing year until finally, in 1971, the first Monty Python movie
appeared, And Now For Something Completely Different. British
comedy would never be the same again. Drawing on the crackpot
genius of its members (including Graham Chapman, John
Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle and Terry Jones,
to name only the proverbial few), the Python troupe combined
brainy satire with utterly ridiculous nonsense to create a new
brand of surreal comedy that inspired generations of performers.
Following the success of their first film, more (and increasingly
hilarious) Monty Python movies arrived at intervals of every few
years, even after the original, legendary television series went off
the air in 1973. From the outrageous satire of The Life of Brian to
the quotable insanity of The Holy Grail to the warped fantasy of
Gilliam’s Time Bandits and beyond, the films of Monty Python
prove that comedy may be nice, but a shrubbery is ever nicer.
MONTY PYTHON’S AND
NOW FOR SOMETHING
COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15 AT 7:00PM
The Pythons’ very first big screen outing features
some of their favorite classic sketches from the first
two seasons of the cult TV show Monty Python’s Flying Circus,
re-filmed and made even sillier for cinematic consumption. Capturing
the Pythons’ greatest hits performed at the peak of their youthful
rambunctiousness, And Now For Something Completely Different is as
hilariously refreshing as a smack in the face with a dead fish! (Dir. by Ian
McNaughton, 1971, UK, 88 mins., Rated PG) 35mm
TIME BANDITS
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22 AT 7:00PM
From a script co-written with his Monty Python
cohort Michael Palin, director Terry Gilliam pulled
out all the stops on his prodigious imagination for
this dark, irreverent and totally enchanting comedy
disguised as a family-friendly adventure. Co-starring
Shelly Duvall and Jim Broadbent, and boasting a musical score by George
Harrison, Time Bandits is a classic – and timeless – comedy fantasy. (Dir. by
Terry Gilliam, 1981, UK, 110 mins., Rated PG) Digital
MONTY PYTHON AND THE
HOLY GRAIL
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29 AT 7:00PM
Monty Python takes on the Middle Ages and coverts
Arthurian legend into uncontrollable lunacy in one of
the most beloved and quoted cult classics of all time!
From its opening multi-language titles (that sure looks like
Swedish) to the closing arrest of the entire Dark Ages cast by modern-day
bobbies, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the film that helped define the
word “irreverence.” (Dir. by Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones, 1975, UK, 91 mins.,
Rated PG) Digital

–The Times
“An ebullient comedy of youthful love.” – Evening
Standard

both fall in love with the Duke’s daughter Silvia. But Proteus is
already sworn to his sweetheart Julia at home in Verona, and the
Duke thinks Valentine is not good enough for his Silvia. With
friendship forgotten, the rivals’ affections quickly get out of hand
as the four young lovers find themselves on a wild chase through
the woods, confused by mistaken identity and threatened by
fierce outlaws before they find a path to reconciliation. Simon
Godwin makes his RSC debut to direct Shakespeare’s exuberant

Modern farms are struggling to keep a secret. Most of the animals
used for food in the United States are raised in giant, bizarre “factory

crawling through the bushes that hide these factories, flying in airplanes

“This delightfully twisted story about a boy and his
(dead) dog showcases precisely what Tim Burton
excels at: blending the macabre and the heartfelt
in a perfect, oddball, union.” – Connie Ogle, Miami
Herald
From mad genius Tim Burton comes Frankenweenie, a
heartwarmingly creepy Halloween tale about a boy and his dog...
with an undead twist! After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog
Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his
best friend back to life-with just a few minor adjustments. He
tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out,
Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn
that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous. Burton, the
man responsible for such delightfully ghoulish animated favorites
as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, here puts his
uniquely demented spin on the legendary Frankenstein story
and comes up with a hilarious, heartfelt and downright macabre
ode to puppy love that is a doggone devilish delight and a new
Halloween classic for all ages! (Dir. by Tim Burton, 2012, USA, 87

PART OF OUR ESSENTIAL CINEMA SERIES
See classic art films the way they were meant to be
seen - with an audience, on the big screen!
“Gooble gobble, gooble gobble, we accept her, we accept her, one of us,
one of us!” Fresh off his success with Lugosi’s Dracula, director Tod
Browning crafted one of the most unforgettable, controversial
and utterly unique horror films of all time - a biting, ahead-of-itstime morality tale of terror and revenge set against a backdrop of
circus life. With Freaks, Browning drew upon his own experiences
working in the circus to create a firsthand look at the daily lives
of sideshow performers, a film that despite its legendarily
horrific elements, manages to make the “outsiders” at the center
of the film seems endearingly sympathetic. Freaks features
German “little person” Harry Earles as Hans, a circus performer
who falls in love with long-legged trapeze artist Cleopatra (Olga
Baclanova). Discovering that Hans is heir to a fortune, Cleopatra
tricks him into marriage, all the while planning to bump off her
new husband and run away with brutish strongman Hercules
(Henry Victor). But what she doesn’t reckon with is the code of
honor among circus freaks: “offend one, offend them all,” leading
to some truly nightmarish consequences. What set Freaks apart
from Tod Browning’s earlier films (and from any other film of
the era) was the fact that genuine circus and carnival sideshow
performers were cast as the freaks. MGM production head Irving
G. Thalberg only agreed to green-light Browning’s highly-unusual
thriller if Browning agreed to humanize the characters, which
he certainly did. Nonetheless, upon its initial release, Freaks was
greeted with such revulsion from audiences that MGM spent
the next 30 years distancing themselves as far from the project
as possible, and the film was banned outright in many states,
with the ensuing controversy eventually destroying Browning’s
once-lucrative filmmaking career. For many years available only
in a truncated reissue version titled Nature’s Mistakes, Freaks was
eventually restored to its original release print and achieved cult
status and enduring popularity through an acclaimed revival at
the 1962 Cannes Film Festival and midnight screenings in the
’60 and ‘70s. (Dir. by Tod Browning, 1932, USA, 64 mins., Not

Enjoy the performing arts on the big screen, with thrilling opera,
ballet and theatre productions from around the world, captured

On Thursday, October 30, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as
The Creature and Jonny Lee Miller plays The Doctor. The
roles will be reversed for the screening on November 2.
National Theatre Live’s smash-hit broadcast of Danny
Boyle’s Frankenstein, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and
Jonny Lee Miller in alternating roles as The Doctor and
The Creature, returns to cinemas as part of the National
Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebration!
This stunning adaptation of Mary Shelly’s classic horror
tale Frankenstein enjoyed a sell-out run at the National Theatre
in 2011, and went on to win awards including the 2012 Olivier
Award for Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee
Miller. Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle (Trainspotting,
Slumdog Millionaire) directs a sensational production with
Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek: Into Darkness, BBC’s Sherlock)
and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, CBS’s Elementary)
alternating roles as Victor Frankenstein and his creation.
Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s
bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his
horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes,
the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful,
determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying
deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental
neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and
evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing
classic gothic tale. (Running time: approximately 135 mins. with no
intermission, Not Rated/Contains mild violence and partial nudity)

“Quite possibly the most bizarre and flatout surreal effort of Tim Burton’s career…
unapologetically silly and endlessly inventive.”
– David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews
A deliriously off-the-wall, fast paced comedy-horror,
Beetlejuice was Tim Burton’s second feature – and it not only
defined his signature mix of wild imagination, sweetly fractured
characters, surreal sensibility, gothic whimsy and dazzling special
effects, but also firmly established him as one of the most original
movie makers of our time. Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin play a
young married couple who are killed in a car accident but are
stuck haunting this world before they can move on to the next.
When an obnoxious yuppie couple and their unhappy, Gothobsessed daughter (played by Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Jones
and Winona Ryder in her breakout role) move in to their old
home, Davis and Baldwin try every trick in the afterlife playbook
to frighten them away. But when their fledgling haunting skills
prove less than effective, the two turn in desperation to a
veteran spook: a profane, malevolent, thoroughly gonzo spirit
named Beetlejuice, played to over-the-top perfection by Michael
Keaton. And that’s when the unique Burton blend of comedy and
the macabre really takes off. (Dir. by Tim Burton, 1988, USA, 92

Meet Helen, a rebellious 17-year-old obsessed with bodily fluids.
Buzzfeed called Wetlands “the most WTF, NSFW movie at this

visual style takes cues from Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting and
combines it with a guileless eroticism. For a film featuring an
unspeakable operatic moment involving a group of men and
a pizza, Wetlands is not only surprisingly beautiful to look at,
but filled with humor, pathos, and…yes, a whole lot of bodily
fluids. (Dir. by David Wnendt, 2013, Germany, in German with

Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst, and Oscar Isaac star in this
twisty, sun-soaked period noir set on the coast of Greece, and
based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr.
Ripley). It’s 1962 in Athens, and Chester and Collette MacFarland
(Mortensen and Dunst) are not your usual American tourists.
This eye-catching and charismatic couple has cryptic motives.
Unexpectedly, they cross paths with an American expat named
Rydal (Isaac). A Greek-speaking and scamming tour guide,
Rydal is transfixed by the wealthy Chester, and especially, by
the sensual Collette. After the couple becomes entangled in
criminal and violent intrigue, Rydal agrees to help them out but discovers that the two hide dark and dangerous secrets. As
Rydal’s attraction to Collette - and Chester’s jealousy - increase,
so does the tension of the trio’s treacherous situation. The feature
directorial debut of screenwriter Hossein Amini (Drive), The
Two Faces of January is a seductive and suspenseful mysterythriller with nail-biting turns and plenty of heat. Lush European
settings and lively visuals lend this adaptation of Highsmith’s
psychologically complex novel a pure cinematic flavor and an
exotic sensuality, while Mortensen, Dunst, and Isaac create a
palpable chemistry that keeps their onscreen trifecta alive with
energy, urgency, and enigma. (Dir. by Hossein Amini, 2014, UK/

20,000 Days on Earth is an inventive, lyrical ode to creativity
and an intimate examination of the artistic process of musician
and cultural icon Nick Cave. In their debut feature, directors
Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard fuse drama and documentary,
weaving a staged day in Cave’s life with never-before-seen
verité observation of his creative cycle. It features those who
have been affected by his life, including wry tales from the road
shared with his regular collaborator, the multi-instrumentalist
Warren Ellis; actor and friend Ray Winstone; and pop star
Kylie Minogue, who shared a duet with Cave in the breakout
hit, “Where the Wild Roses Grow.” These voices from the past
revisit Cave in daydream-like scenes as he sits behind the wheel
through his adopted hometown of Brighton, England. Neither a
music documentary nor a concert film, 20,000 Days on Earth still
contains electrifying performances. Audiences see a song grow
from the tiniest of ideas to an epic performance at Sydney Opera
House. Cave also opens up to a psychoanalyst as he discusses
how his early years continue to inform his work, and journeys
through his memories via mementos from his personal archive.
This category-defying film pushes the documentary form into
new territory, exploring universal themes about artistry and
celebrating the transformative power of the creative spirit. (Dir.

“They didn’t go looking for

much to live.”
What do you get for the mother
who has everything? How about a
butcher knife, a sexually-confused

camp, gore and genuine nuttiness
turned up to “11?” It’s all here in
Night Warning, aka Butcher, Baker,
Nightmare Maker, one of the kookiest
slasher flicks of the ‘80s!
“It’s a bit like Mommie Dearest on

in other words, it absolutely rocks!”

If Franz Kafka had been an animator

LOFT FILM FEST 2014
A SPECIAL WELCOME FROM MAYOR
JONATHAN ROTHSCHILD
HONORARY CHAIR, LOFT FILM FEST 2014
As a lifelong Tucsonan, I’ve enjoyed watching The Loft Cinema’s
long journey to becoming the entertainment destination it
is today. I remember its original incarnation as an art house
theatre at Freemont and 6th in the 1970s and 80s, and its
reincarnation on Speedway Blvd in 2002 as a nonprofit. The Loft
has had many great moments since then. A couple that stand
out are the 2004 Tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman, which
featured Q&As with Hoffman himself, and the 2006 screenings
of Brokeback Mountain, which were attended by Oscar winners
Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.
Tucson is home to a passionate and supportive film community.
Thanks to that support, The Loft continues to thrive and expand.
The addition of a third screen last year allowed for more films
and more patrons. A fourth screen, a bigger lobby, and a new
concession stand will added soon. The community’s continued
support is what makes this possible. The Loft is a vital part of our
arts community, and I am proud to be among its biggest fans.
Thanks for your continued support.

Adapted from Larry McMurtry’s knowingly nostalgic, semiautobiographical novel, The Last Picture Show is one of the most acclaimed
films of the 1970s – an elegiac, bittersweet drama about growing up in
a small, dust-blown Texas town that perfectly captures the end of an
era. Directed with astonishing assurance by up-and-coming filmmaker
Peter Bogdanovich (who co-wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay
along with McMurtry), The Last Picture Show immediately catapulted
the young auteur into the ranks of major American filmmakers, with
critics praising the film as “the most important work by a young
American director since Citizen Kane.” Revolving around the adventures
of three sexually-confused 1950s teens, played by then-unknowns
Jeff Bridges, Timothy Bottoms and Cybill Shepherd, the film expertly
depicts their tentative journey to adulthood involving death, disaster,
ruined relationships, moments of joy and the slow realization of life’s
unfairness, all played out against the backdrop of a dying small town
American life that’s about to vanish into history. Featuring luminous
black and white cinematography and a letter-perfect supporting cast led
by Ben Johnson (Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner), Cloris Leachman
(Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner) and Ellen Burstyn, The Last
Picture Show is a modern-day classic that only gets better with age. (Dir.
by Peter Bogdanovich, 1971, 118 mins., Rated R) 35mm
Larry McMurtry is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author who has written
more than forty novels, biographies and collections of essays, several
of which have been adapted into award-winning feature films and
television movies, including Hud (1963), The Last Picture Show (1971),
Terms of Endearment (1983) and Lonesome Dove (1989). He is also the
author of more than thirty screenplays, and winner of the Academy
Award for Best Adapted Screenplay (along with co-writer Diana Ossana)
for Brokeback Mountain (2005). The Loft Cinema is proud to present
Larry McMurtry with the 2014 Lofty Lifetime Achievement Award.

GOODBYE TO LANGUAGE 3D
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16 AT 7:30PM
SOUTHWEST PREMIERE!
“The result is, beyond question, the finest way
that the [3D] format has ever been put to use.” Jake Cole, Movie Mezzanine
“As far as purely aesthetic experiences go, I
doubt anything I’ll see anywhere this year will
beat Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye To Language.” Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, AV Club
The idea is simple: A married woman and a single man meet. They
love, they argue, fists fly. A dog strays between town and country.
The seasons pass. The man and woman meet again. The dog finds
itself between them. The other is in one, the one is in the other
and they are three. The former husband shatters everything.
A second film begins: the same as the first, and yet not. From
the human race we pass to metaphor. This ends in barking and
a baby’s cries. In the meantime, we will have seen people talking
of the demise of the dollar, of truth in mathematics and of the
death of a robin. The new film from legendary director Jean-Luc
Godard is his first in 3-D, and one of the most singular of his
storied career. Winner of the Jury Prize (and the Palm Dog Jury
Prize!) at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. (Dir. by Jean-Luc Godard,
2014, France, in French with English subtitles, 70 min., Not Rated)

“Gorgeous.” - Eric Kohn, Indiewire
“A portrait of a maverick artistic sensibility.
Routines that sometimes suggest a meeting of
Busby Berkeley and Looney Tunes violence…
makes for jaw-dropping viewing.” – John
DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter
As a young man, American Louis Sarno heard a song on the
radio that gripped his imagination. He followed the mysterious
sounds all the way to the Central African rainforest and found
their source with the Bayaka Pygmies, a tribe of hunters and
gatherers. He never left. Today, 25 years later, Louis Sarno has
recorded more than 1,000 hours of unique Bayaka music. He is a
fully accepted member of the Bayaka society and has a 13-yearold son, Samedi. Once, when Samedi was a baby, Louis held his
seriously ill son in his arms through a frightful night and made
him a promise: “If you get through this, one day I’ll show you the
world I come from.”
Now the time has come to fulfill his promise, and Louis travels
with Samedi from the African rainforest to a concrete jungle:
New York City. Together, they meet Louis’ family and old friends,
including his closest friend from college, Jim Jarmusch. Carried
by the contrasts between rainforest and urban America, with a
fascinating soundtrack and peaceful, loving imagery, Louis and
Samedi’s stories are interwoven to form a touching portrait of an
extraordinary man and his son. Song from the Forest is a modern
epic set between rainforest and skyscrapers. (Dir. by Michael

Elizabeth Streb and the STREB Extreme Action Company form
a motley troupe of flyers and crashers. Propelled by Streb’s edict
that “anything too safe is not action,” these daredevils challenge
the assumptions of art, aging, injury, gender, and human
possibility. Born to Fly: Elizabeth Streb vs. Gravity traces the
evolution of Elizabeth Streb’s movement philosophy as she pushes
herself and her performers from the ground to the sky. Revealing
the passions behind the dancers’ bruises and broken noses, Born to
Fly offers a breathtaking tale about the necessity of art, inspiring
audiences hungry for a more tactile and fierce existence. (Dir. by

“One of the most confident and unusual

“Sweet, funny and very, very New York.” Cormac O’Brien, Little White Lies
Siblings Karin and Simon are visiting their parents and their
little sister Clara. That evening, other relatives will be joining
them for dinner. Over the course of the day, the washing
machine is repaired, people sit together at the kitchen table,
carry out an experiment with orange peel, talk about lungs, and
sew on a button that was deliberately torn off. This sequence of
family scenes in a Berlin flat complete with cat and dog creates
a wondrous world of the everyday: Coming and going, all
manner of doings, each movement leading to the next, one word
following another. It is a carefully staged chain reaction of actions
and sentences. And in between, silent gazes and anecdotes
about experiences. The people act oddly even-temperedly; their
dialogues are direct and unemotional. Even the pets and the
material surroundings play a part. Some objects seem alive as
if by magic. Commonplace actions and familiar items appear
absurd and eerie in this narrative cosmos. In his feature film
debut, director Ramon Zürcher places the absurdities of daily life
on display and translates unspectacular events into an exciting
choreography of everyday life. Produced by international cinema
maverick Béla Tarr, The Strange Little Cat is a marvel. (Dir. by

“A fun and sunny documentary, proving, as

Advanced Style examines the lives of seven unique New Yorkers
whose eclectic personal style and vital spirit have guided their
approaches to aging. Based on Ari Seth Cohen’s famed blog of
the same name, this film paints intimate and colorful portraits of
independent, stylish women aged 62 to 95 who are challenging
conventional ideas about beauty, aging, and Western culture’s
increasing obsession with youth. Advanced Style will make you

“Sweet and beautifully observed… Lobo is

Reporter
ARIZONA PREMIERE!
Stuck fending off bullies and over-protective parents, Leonardo
spends his days allowing his best friend Giovana to drag him
around town. Being blind has always been an inconvenience
for Leonardo, but his angsty adolescence gets a lift when the
handsome and smooth-talking Gabriel turns down numerous
offers from ogling girls to hang with Leonardo after school. The
longer they spend together, the more apparent their shared
attraction becomes - not just to them but to a spurned Giovana
as well. As social pressure mounts on both to fit within their
confined social boxes, the two must decide whether to ignore
their feelings or to throw caution to the wind and admit that
they might actually be falling in love. Brazil’s official selection for
the 2015 Academy Awards and the winner of two awards at the
64th Berlin International Film Festival; the FIPRESCI Prize for
best feature film in the Panorama section and the Teddy Award

Amidst quarter-life crises, Allie struggles to prepare for the Peace

they quickly realize that, akin to their confusing, transitioning
lives, they neither know where they’re going nor how they plan
to get there. The debut feature film of directors Sarah-Violet

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17 AT 7:00PM
ARIZONA PREMIERE!
“Director Beth Harrington packs enough
drama, music and history to fuel a miniseries in
her thoroughly entertaining and comprehensive
account of the Carter and Cash families and their
enduring contributions to American music.” The Hollywood Reporter
The Winding Stream is the tale of the dynasty at the very heart
of country music. Starting with the seminal Original Carter
Family, AP, Sara and Maybelle; this film documents the ebb
and flow of their influence, the transformation of that act into
the Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle, the marital alliance
between June Carter and music legend Johnny Cash, and
the efforts of the present-day family to keep this legacy alive.
A story that has never been told in its entirety, The Winding
Stream covers the epic sweep of this family’s saga all in one film.
It is told by family members; including Johnny Cash, Rosanne
Cash, Janette Carter, as well as the musicians they influenced. And
their musical contribution is vividly illustrated in performances
by roots music practitioners like John Prine,George Jones,
Sheryl Crow, Kris Kristofferson and many others. (Dir. by Beth

KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17 AT 7:30PM
WITH WRITER/DIRECTOR DAVID ZELLNER
AND CO-WRITER NATHAN ZELLNER IN
PERSON!
ARIZONA PREMIERE!
Kumiko lives in a cluttered, cramped apartment in Tokyo with
her pet rabbit, Bunzo. She works as an office lady, robotically
preparing tea and fetching dry cleaning for her nitpicky boss.
But on her own time, she obsessively watches a weathered VHS
copy of Fargo. Rewinding and fast-forwarding repeatedly, she
meticulously maps out where a briefcase of castaway loot is
buried within the film. After hours of intense research, Kumiko
heads to the United States and into the harsh Minnesota winter
to search for it.
Inspired by an urban legend about a Japanese woman who took
a similar journey, filmmaker brothers David and Nathan Zellner
tackle their most ambitious project to date. The Zellners’ love for
lonely eccentrics remains intact, and Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim)
gives a fascinating performance as the introspective, withdrawn
Kumiko, whose increasing discomfort in the world leads her
to retreat ever further into isolation. Shot with breathtaking
precision, Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter soars to transcendence
as it reveals the beauty in the quest for reality, even if that
reality is just your own. Alexander Payne executive produced
Kumiko, which won the US Special Jury Award (Dramatic) at
this year’s Sundance Film Festival for the fantastic music score
by The Octopus Project. (Dir. by David Zellner, 2014, USA, in
English and Japanese with subtitles, 105 min., Not Rated) Digital
Festivals: Sundance, Berlin, South by Southwest
David and Nathan Zellner are Austin-based filmmakers who
have written, produced, and directed numerous award-winning
shorts and two feature films, Goliath and KID-THING. Goliath
played at the inaugural Loft Film Fest, while KID-THING played
in the 2012 edition. The Buenos Aires International Festival of
Independent Cinema held a retrospective of the Zellner brothers’
work to date in 2012.

foreboding children’s book called Mister Babadook mysteriously
appears on Samuel’s bookshelf, Amelia must decide if her son is
truly deranged, or if there really is a bogeyman lurking in their
darkened halls at night.
First-time feature director Jennifer Kent vividly captures the
vicious turbulence of Samuel’s shrill outbursts, generating
a real sense of horror from his aggressive unruliness, all the
while subtly hinting at the weary Amelia’s own deeply troubled
nature. The Babadook builds up tension and dread in this
damaged family’s home before deftly introducing the terrifying
possibility that something even more ominous may be stalking
the dysfunctional pair. (Dir. by Jennifer Kent, 2014, Australia, in

“A well-acted, thoroughly involving drama.” Brian Viner, Daily Mail
PRESENTED BY GEICO
Transforming Harry Potter’s fictional competition into a
physically demanding, real-life sport, quidditch has secured
its place as one of the fastest growing collegiate club sports
today. Mudbloods follows the resilient underdogs of the UCLA
Quidditch team as they make their way to the Fifth Annual
Quidditch World Cup in New York City. Through nail biting
victories and losses, the dreamers, creators and athletes who
make up this exceptional community come together to make this
magical sport into something you could’ve never imagined, until
now. (Dir. by Farzad Sangari, 2014, USA, in English, 89 min., Not

Festivals: AFI Docs
Farzad Sangari is a filmmaker originally from Iran. Prior to
making films Farzad studied both Literature and Film and
worked in Education. Mudbloods is his first feature documentary.
When a mining disaster tears at the fabric of an Appalachian
coal-mining town, the lives of three very different inhabitants
become inexplicably tangled in a web of secrets. Amos Jenkins
(Boyd Holbrook, The Skeleton Twins), the sole survivor of the
tragedy, unwillingly becomes a focal point of the resulting
investigation. As tensions rise over who to blame for the deadly
mishap, the teenage son of a top executive at the coal mine
goes missing. Diane (Elizabeth Banks, Hunger Games), the boy’s
mother, grows emotionally estranged from her husband, Bill
(Josh Lucas, American Psycho), as they search in vain for their
child. Turning to the local church for support, Diane not only
finds a comforting friend in Amos but also meets one of her son’s
classmates, Owen Briggs (Jacob Lofland, Mud), whom she learns
was present at the time of his disappearance. Featuring standout
performances from across the stellar cast, Little Accidents is a
remarkable debut from first-time director Sara Colangelo. Costarring Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don’t Cry) and Alexia Rasmussen
(The Comedy). (Dir. by Sara Colangelo, 2014, USA, in English, 105

A DAY WITHOUT A MEXICAN
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18 AT 1:30PM
10TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING WITH
DIRECTOR/CO-WRITER SERGIO ARAU AND
STAR/CO-WRITER YARELI ARIZMENDI IN
PERSON!
“Director Arau... and his co-writer, actress
Arizmendi, negotiate the story’s tricky mix of
comedy, social satire and science fiction with
surprising aplomb.” – Maitland McDonagh, TV
Guide’s Movie Guide
Marking the directorial debut of artist/musician Sergio Arau,
son of Like Water for Chocolate director Alfonso Arau, A Day
Without a Mexican ponders the potentially catastrophic results
that would occur if California-based Mexicans, who make up
over a third of the state’s population, were to suddenly disappear.
The mockumentary postulates that the lack of Latino gardeners,
nannies, cooks, policeman, maids, teachers, farm workers,
construction crews, entertainers, athletes, and the world’s
largest growing consumer market would create a social, political,
and economic disaster, leaving the concept of the “California
Dream” in shambles. A uniquely entertaining blend of sharply
satirical comedy and biting social criticism, A Day Without a
Mexican’s provocative “what if?” scenario proved controversial
even before its release: promotional billboards reading “On May
14th, there will be no Mexicans in California” caused a stir with
immigrant rights groups, who believed the sign was a statement
against the Latino community. 10 years after that initial release,
the film remains as pointed and relevant as ever. (Dir. by Sergio
Arau, 2004, USA/Mexico/Spain, in English and Spanish, 100 mins.,
Rated R) 35mm
Sergio Arau and Yareli Arizmendi met on the set of the classic film Like
Water for Chocolate in 1992, in which Yareli starred as the “mean” sister
Rosaura. Sergio’s father, screen legend Alfonso Arau, was the director.
They have been married ever since. The two “multi-undisciplined” artists
are a true power couple, and co-wrote the indie hit, A Day Without a
Mexican, which Sergio directed and in which Yareli starred. It was The
Loft’s biggest film of the year, and we’re thrilled to bring Sergio and
Yareli back for a discussion on its 10 year anniversary.

“A pinnacle of animation in the

Isao Takahata is one of the co-founders of Japan’s legendary
Studio Ghibli, and is responsible for some of the most influential
and timeless animation classics in the history of film (and cited
as an influence on his colleague and Studio Ghibli co-founder,
Hayao Miyazaki). Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday,
Pom Poko, and My Neighbors the Yamadas represent the best of
what animated features can do: invite us into a world where
anything is possible. Eight years in the making, his new film, The
Tale of Princess Kaguya, revisits a familiar Studio Ghibli theme,
telling the story of a magical girl among ordinary humans.
Okina is a bamboo cutter in ancient rural Japan. One day in the
forest, he finds a tiny baby in the folds of a bamboo shoot. He
brings the creature home to his wife Ounaa, and they decide
to keep her and raise her as a princess, though she is clearly
not of this world. Kaguya grows at an unnatural rate, quickly
maturing into an uncommonly beautiful young woman. Soon,
every suitor wants Kaguya, including the Emperor himself - but
this is not a tale of courtship. True to the Studio Ghibli that
brought us Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Spirited Away, The
Tale of The Princess Kaguya follows this strange young female as
she creates her own identity. Takahata’s imagery is breathtaking
- individually drawn, hand-colored frames flow like a river of
delicate, detailed watercolor paintings. Like Miyazaki’s recent The
Wind Rises, The Tale of Princess Kaguya is an extraordinary work
of art from a master of the form. (Dir. by Isao Takahata, 2014,

As a teenager, Aaron Swartz was a computer-programming
prodigy with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. After
emerging as a pioneer of Internet activism, education, and
politics, he was indicted on multiple federal charges in 2011
and 2012, setting off a complex chain of events that left the
Internet community reeling. Shortly thereafter, at the age of 26,
Swartz was found dead of an apparent suicide in his Brooklyn
apartment. His family, friends, and supporters immediately
blamed the prosecutors of the case, who aimed to put him in jail
for 35 years and brand him a convicted felon for life. Swartz was
persecuted for the very rights and freedoms for which he stood,
and that ultimately broke him. Weaving together home video
footage and anecdotal interviews from his closest confidants,
Brian Knappenberger creates a dynamic portrait of a precocious
boy who grew up to lead the Internet community into a new age
of data sharing and free speech. (Dir. by Brian Knappenberger,
2014, USA, in English, 105 min., Not Rated) Digital
Festivals: Sundance, Seattle
Brian Knappenberger has created multiple award-winning
documentaries, including We Are Legion: The Story of the
Hacktivists about the online hacktivist nongroup Anonymous;
Life After War about political tensions in postwar Afghanistan;
and A Murder in Kyiv about the death of a Ukrainian journalist,
reportedly at the hands of government officials. He has crafted
numerous other documentaries for PBS’s Frontline/World,
the National Geographic Society, Bloomberg News, and the
Discovery Channel.

WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18 AT 7:30PM
SOUTHWEST PREMIERE!
“Shailene Woodley is all grown up… you will
never look at her the same way again.” – Chase

“SPELLBINDING. Eva Green is frighteningly

“Is Nebraska a comedy or a drama? Like life, it’s
both. This is a movie to bring home and live with,
to kick around in your head after it hits you in
the heart. It’s damn near perfect, starting with
the acting.” - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
Oscar-winning filmmaker Alexander Payne’s Nebraska is a
bittersweet dramatic comedy about a father-and-son road trip
through an emotionally and economically parched homeland.
After receiving a sweepstakes letter in the mail, a cantankerous
father named Woody (Bruce Dern) thinks he’s struck it rich,
and wrangles his son David (Will Forte) into taking a road
trip with him to claim the fortune. As the duo embarks upon
their unusual journey, Woody’s foul-mouthed wife Kate (June
Squibb), his older son Ross (Bob Odenkirk) and other assorted
family members join in the quest, leading to adventures
both poignant and hilariously unexpected, including an everescalating run-in with Woody’s bitter former business partner
Ed (Stacy Keach). Shot in shimmering black and white across
four states, Nebraska is a funny, bracing and heartwarming
tale of family life in the heartland of America. Nominated for
six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director,
Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress and Best
Cinematography, Nebraska also scored leading man Bruce Dern
his first-ever Best Actor nomination. (Dir. by Alexander Payne,
2013, USA, 115 mins., Rated R, Paramount Vantage) Digital
Kat Connors (Shailene Woodley, The Descendants, The Fault in
Our Stars) is 17 years old when her perfect homemaker mother,
Eve (Eva Green, Casino Royale), a beautiful, enigmatic, and
haunted woman, disappears - just as Kat is discovering and
relishing her newfound sexuality. Having lived for so long in a
stifled, emotionally repressed household, she barely registers her
mother’s absence and certainly doesn’t blame her doormat of a
father, Brock, (Christopher Meloni, Bound) for the loss. In fact,
it’s almost a relief. But as time passes, Kat begins to come to grips
with how deeply Eve’s disappearance has affected her. Returning
home on a break from college, she finds herself confronted with
the truth about her mother’s departure, and her own denial about
the events surrounding it. Director Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin)
has created another dreamlike, funny, and ultimately mournful
exploration of American teenage life. (Dir. by Gregg Araki, 2014,
USA, in English, 91 min., Rated R) Digital

“Watching A Girl Walks Home At Night, you get
the impression that you’re witnessing something
iconic and important unfold before you.” - Drew
Taylor, The Playlist
Strange things are afoot in Bad City. The Iranian ghost town,
home to prostitutes, junkies, pimps and other sordid souls, is
a bastion of depravity and hopelessness where a lonely vampire
stalks its most unsavory inhabitants. But when boy meets girl,
an unusual love story begins to blossom... blood red.
Cinema’s first Iranian vampire western, Ana Lily Amirpour’s
debut feature basks in the sheer pleasure of pulp. A joyful mashup of genre, archetype, and iconography, its prolific influences
span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the
Iranian New Wave. Amped by a mix of Iranian rock, techno, and
Morricone-inspired riffs, its airy, anamorphic, black-and-white
aesthetic and artfully drawn-out scenes combine the simmering
tension of Sergio Leone with the weird surrealism of David
Lynch. Above all, Amirpour’s tale of love and squalor is fun.
Why else would a vampire ride a skateboard? (Dir. by Ana Lily
Amirpour, 2014, Iran / USA, in Persian with subtitles, 99 min., Not

DEAD SNOW 2: RED VS. DEAD
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18 AT 10:15PM
ARIZONA PREMIERE!
“Bigger, brasher, bloodier, and with more
bowels, Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead is a blast.” Brian Tallerco, Film Threat
If the worst day of your life consisted of accidentally killing
your girlfriend with an axe, chain-sawing your own arm off,
and watching in horror as your closest friends were devoured
by a zombified Nazi battalion, you’d have to assume that things
couldn’t get much worse. In Martin’s case, that was only the
beginning.
Picking up immediately where the original left off, Dead Snow:
Red vs. Dead wastes no time getting right to the gore-filled
action, leaving a bloody trail of intestines in its wake. Director
Tommy Wirkola returns to the helm with a vengeance, coming
up with more inventive ways to maim and dismember than
you ever thought possible. Combining wry humor with horrific
worst-case scenarios, this follow-up to the 2009 classic is sure
to shock the weak-of-heart and delight even the most hard-core
fans of the horror genre. Colonel Herzog is back, and he is not to
be f__ked with. (Dir. by Tommy Wirkola, 2014, Norway / Iceland,

PRESENTED BY GEICO
“An extraordinary visual and musical tapestry
built around the compelling persona of real-life
Memphis R&B singer Willis Earl Beal.” - Andrew
O’Hehir, Salon.com
I Am Big Bird is a feature-length documentary about Caroll
Spinney, who has been Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the
Grouch since 1969... and at 80 years old, he has no intention
of stopping. Think you know everything there is to know about
Sesame Street? You don’t. You might know that Frank Oz turned
down an offer to play Big Bird, but you probably don’t know
that until a last minute change of heart by NASA, Big Bird was
supposed to go to space aboard the Challenger. Or you may
know that Oscar the Grouch got his voice from a cantankerous
cabbie, but you’d be surprised to learn that a fire in his trash can
almost led to Caroll’s untimely demise. Caroll’s stories are the
stuff of legend. He has been a constant presence in our lives for
over 40 years, his path weaving through American history. His
time inside the Bird has taught him about the world and about
himself. I Am Big Bird peels away the instances in Caroll’s life that
inspired his creation of characters that influenced generations of
children. And, as the yellow feathers give way to grey hair, it is
the man, not the puppet, who will steal your heart. (Dir. by Dave

A strange singer with “god given talent” drifts through the
mythic city of Memphis under its canopy of ancient oak trees,
shattered windows, and burning spirituality. Surrounded by
lovers, legends, hustlers, preachers, and a wolfpack of kids, the
unstable performer avoids the recording studio and is driven
to spend time in his own form of self-discovery. Shown in
fragments, his journey drags him from love and happiness right
to the edge of another dimension.
Featuring an explosive performance and score from the singular
recording artist-cum-wizard, Willis Earl Beal, Memphis is a film
steeped in folklore, music, surrealism, and the abstract search
for glory. (Dir. by Tim Sutton, 2013, USA, in English, 75 min., Not

excitement.” - Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New

“Zero Motivation is the discovery of an exciting
new original voice in cinema, who happens to
be really funny, intelligent and female. We can’t
wait for more.” - Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist
On August 12, 1990, in the badlands of South Dakota,
paleontologist Peter Larson and his team from the Black Hills
Institute unearthed the largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus
rex ever found. It was the find of a lifetime - the world’s
greatest dinosaur discovery. They named their dinosaur Sue. Two years later, when the FBI and the National Guard showed
up, battle lines were drawn over ownership of Sue. The US
government, world-class museums, Native American tribes, and
competing paleontologists became the Goliath to Larson’s David
as he and his team fought to keep their dinosaur and wrestled
with intimidation tactics that threatened their freedom as well.
Dinosaur 13 chronicles an unprecedented saga in American
history and details the fierce battle to possess a 65-millionyear-old treasure. With consummate skill, filmmaker Todd
Miller excavates layer after layer, exposing human emotion in a
dramatic tale that is as complex as it is fascinating. (Dir. by Todd

Filmmaker Talya Lavie steps into the spotlight with Zero
Motivation, a zany, dark comedic portrait of everyday life for
a unit of young, female Israeli soldiers. The human resources
office at a remote desert base serves as the setting for this cast
of characters who bide their time pushing paper and battling in
computer games, counting down the minutes until they can return
to civilian life. Amidst their boredom and clashing personalities,
issues of commitment - to friendship, love, and country - are
handled with humor and sharp-edged wit. A decorated veteran
herself (of film) with time spent at Sundance Labs, Berlinale, and
MoMA, Lavie combats the status quo by flipping genre on its
head and bending gender roles to a delightful extreme. Winner
of the Best Narrative Film Award and the Nora Ephron Award at

AN EVENING WITH BRUCE DERN AND
STACY KEACH
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19 AT 4:30PM
HOSTED BY THE LOFT CINEMA AND PICTURE
ARIZONA, LLC
At this very special event, legendary actors Bruce Dern and Stacy
Keach will be on hand for a lively moderated discussion that will
also include tribute reels featuring highlights from each of their
respective careers. The Loft Film Fest will present Bruce Dern
with the 2014 Lee Marvin Maverick Award, presented by Pam
Marvin, and Stacy Keach will be presented with the 2014 Bob
Shelton Award, presented by Bob Shelton.
BRUCE DERN emerged during the filmmaking revolution of
the 1960s and 70s as the epitome of a new breed of American
movie star. A virtuoso character actor who specialized in
bringing complicated men to the screen, Dern made his mark in
many of the definitive counterculture films of the era, ranging
from low-budget Roger Corman hits like The Wild Angels (1966)
to offbeat classics like Jack Nicholson’s directorial debut Drive,
He Said (1971) and the sci-fi favorite Silent Running (1972). He
also went down in film history for his role in The Cowboys (1972),
in which he became the first man ever to kill John Wayne
on screen. Whether playing Tom Buchanan in The Great
Gatsby (1974) or starring in Alfred Hitchcock’s final film Family
Plot (1976), Dern could always be counted on to make any
film more interesting by not playing is safe, bringing an edgy
originality to every role. It was his powerful performance in Hal
Ashby’s Coming Home (1978) that earned him his first Academy
Award nomination as Best Supporting Actor. Since then, Dern
has continued to surprise, entertain and delight audiences in
such films as Quentin Tarantino’s Djanjo Unchained (2012) and
Alexander Payne’s Nebraska (2013), in which his unforgettable
performance as the headstrong Woody Grant brought him his
first Academy Award nomination as Best Actor. The Loft Film
Fest is proud to present Bruce Dern with the 2014 Lee Marvin
Maverick Award for his enormous contributions to film and his
continued refusal to play it safe.
STACY KEACH is a versatile actor who has forged a longrunning career that crosses all mediums. He has found major
success in film, television and live theatre, instilling every
character he plays with a restless energy that has influenced
scores of young actors, never limiting himself to one type of
role. Starting his acting career on the stage in the ‘60s, he made
his Broadway debut in 1969 as Buffalo Bill in Indians by Arthur
Kopit, which won him a Tony nomination. Over the years, he
has garnered numerous theatre accolades, including Obie and
Drama Desk Awards. His film career began with a memorable
turn in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1968), and his breakthrough
performance came in John Huston’s classic Fat City (1972),
in which he starred as a down-on-his-luck boxer opposite Jeff
Bridges. He has since gone on to star in an incredibly diverse range
of films, including The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972, shot
in Tucson), The Killer Inside Me (1976), Up in Smoke (1978), The
Long Riders (1980), That Championship Season (1982, opposite
Bruce Dern) and American History X (1998). He has also found
great success on television, perhaps most famously as Mickey
Spillane’s hard-boiled detective in “The New Mike Hammer”
series (1984-1987), and in the title role of the 1988 mini-series
“Hemingway,” for which he won a Golden Globe. Most recently,
he has starred in Nebraska (2013), Planes: Fire and Rescue (2014)
and If I Stay (2014), and is soon scheduled to return to Broadway
in the new revival of Love Letters. The Loft Film Fest is proud to
present Stacy Keach with this year’s Bob Shelton Award in honor
of his amazing and always surprising career.

“It was a thrill to discover something so
bold, innovative, and downright wayward.” Jonathan Romney, Film Comment
“Filtering painstaking research on the evolution
of Creek Nation hymns through a tragic narrative
from Harjo’s family history, the director’s first
nonfiction feature is artful and illuminating.” Guy Lodge,Variety
In 1962, filmmaker Sterlin Harjo’s grandfather disappeared
mysteriously in Sasakwa, Oklahoma, and as the Seminole
community searched for him, its members sang ancient songs
of faith and hope. Harjo’s first feature-length documentary
explores the disappearance of his grandfather and the origins of
these songs. Interviewing everyday people and the faith keepers
of his tribe with his delicate touch and gentle inquiry, Harjo
traces the creation of their songs, which commemorate a great
time of upheaval from their homeland when United States policy
dictated their relocation. Along the way, he learns that his tribe’s
singing style is tied to traditions that originated in Scotland,
Appalachia, and the experiences of enslaved African Americans.
Sculpted with an aching sense of beauty, This May Be the Last
Time reminds us that despite the hardships at hand, we can sing
our way into the future and that forgiveness is essential if we
want to move forward in life. (Dir. by Sterlin Harjo, 2014, USA, in
English, 90 min., Not Rated) Digital

Somewhere in Ukraine, Sergey enters a specialized boarding
school for the deaf. Alone in this new and unfamiliar place,
he must find his way through the school’s hierarchy. Sergey
quickly encounters the tribe, a student gang dealing in crime
and prostitution. After passing their hazing rituals and being
inducted into the group, he takes part in several robberies and
begins to work his way up the chain of command to become
pimp-protector for two of the girls, who turn tricks at the local
truck stop. Finding himself in love with one of the, Sergey
ultimately breaks all the unwritten rules of the tribe, with tragic
consequences. An exhilarating experience in pure cinema, The
Tribe launches the viewer into an unfamiliar new world while
remaining completely riveting. Winner of three awards at this
year’s Cannes Film Festival, including the Critics Week Grand
Prize! (Dir. by Miroslav Slaboshpitsky, 2014, Ukraine, no dialogue,
