Southland Dog Training Club December 2013 Newsletter PICNIC at DAFFODIL BAY A few of us from club had a lovely BBQ at Daffodil Bay. The weather was kind. We normally go for a walk, but as there were only a few of us to begin with we decided to be lazy and set up the Barbie instead, sit on our chairs and watch the dogs play. Hilarious. Dogs everywhere, just loving the freedom and enjoying playing together. They were all well behaved. Minka and Axel are now best friends. Hagred (Grahams German Shepherd ) fell in love with Tam so that made for a good mornings entertainment on its own. It was great to see all the dogs getting on so well. Minka is a pain on the lead, but off lead, a totally different dog. I believe the dog park is a huge success, another example of how dogs behave away from their own territory. Some pics of our well behaved, well trained, awesome doggies. Hopefully will get more folk next year. Huge thankyou Dawn, for your BBQ skills and the chocolate Santas. Remember, there are kennels available for use at the back of the hall. BLUE RIBBON POLICY The Southland Dog Training Club has a ‘Blue Ribbon Policy’. If your dog does not enjoy the attention of other dogs or people, please tie a blue ribbon to its collar. The ribbon will identify your dog as needing a large personal space. It does NOT mean that your dog is aggressive. If you are the owner or handler of a very friendly dog, please respect other people and dogs and do not let your dog invade the personal space of any dog or person without invitation. Blue ribbons are available from any committee member REMEMBER! To toilet your dog BEFORE coming into the club building. If your dog messes inside it is YOUR responsibility to clean it up! WHAT’S on WHEN Am emptying Pooh Wheelie Bin next week. Can you please take your Pooh Bags home and dispose of them there. I will seal bin till January show. We don’t want smelly maggoty bins over the Xmas break. Cheers Jenny RAFFLE ITEMS PLEASE As it seems hampers are the best sellers for our raffles at our shows I will put the blue tub in the hall for non perishable donations. If we all donate 1 item per week there would be enough to make some awesome hampers. Also if anyone out there has baskets surplus to their requirement for the hampers they would be greatly appreciated and could be left at the hall for me to collect. Dianne January Show Agility Hi Agiliteers, all is progressing smoothly for the Show in January. Trish Cameron and Di Youthed (Trainee) have agreed to be the Show Managers and will need your support and positive thoughts during the show. Thank you to those two. You will have e mailed to you the jobs list and do not forget to get non perishable items to the show secs office or to Dianne Pearsey for hamper raffle. the Can we please have Agiliteers at the grounds at 7.45 to set up the first two courses. This means that we can set up and get started on time. Thank you, Elaine Youthed. Can I please have feedback on the club days so far held this year. (2013) So far, the positives are that members who do not travel and are not an NZKC member get to compete, they get points towards “Dog of the year” and we raise money for the club ($700 approx), all at the same time. Negatives, there were a lot of club days, but spread out. The full day was hard work but it got a lot done in a short space of time, and the 2 courses every so often seemed ok. Feedback required otherwise I will plan the next years club days and get it out to you. Cheers, Elaine RESULTS RESULTS CLUB DAY Sunday 8th December We held the end of the year Agility Club day and a dedicated few turned up to compete. The NALA LINK was a jumpers course set at Jumpers C. We then set up a Jumpers B and Jumpers A. The good thing about this is that people are willing to run in their present grade and try in the next grade up. Its good training. Thank you to Lenore who did some judging. Awesome handling by Sarah in a try out in Jumpers A, plus all the usual handling by everyone. My dog Time finally stayed in the ring. Cheers Sue Bess & Kaz YOUR THOUGHTS SOUGHT Dear Members, If you have been looking at what other clubs do you will see a trend towards some clubs having their AD & ADXA at their Ribbon Trials. This might work for them but I firmly believe that we need to use our AD & ADXA as a draw card to our Championship Shows to bring as many people to our shows as possible, and being totally mercenary, they then spend money (canteen and Raffles), and we do no more real work for 40 competitors as for 60; but we are able to cover our cost better with more competitors. The profit then becomes our fund raising. Yeah Any thoughts, contact me or a committee member. Cheers Elaine Agility Gear for sale Due to regulations changing, the committee has decided that rather than having non regulation gear lying around, that we would put the gear up for sale for tender. This would also help to pay for regulation gear rather than fund raising for it. The process would be that you would apply in writing to the committee (Letter or Email) make an offer on the gear and then the committee would decide who the highest bidder was and then sell the gear. We would expect that the letters/e-mails would be into the committee by the February 10th meeting or at that meeting. The successful persons would be decided upon and notified. Item descriptions The old Fluro painted jumps 10 in number. They can be tendered for individually. (Bars included) These jumps are no longer regulation and it’s too costly to make them regulation. 4 sets of wooden wing jumps (bars included.) WHAT’S on WHEN January Champ Show Obedience & RallyO Billeting Judges The Committee is finding it increasingly difficult to get find club members to volunteer with shows. One of those areas is billeting judges. We had to arrange motel accommodation for one of our November obedience judges as no-one offered to host them. At the time of writing this, we have had no-one offer to billet our obedience judges (Lynda & Wayne Loader) or our Rally-O judge (Lyn Clearwater & her husband, Ian) contracted for our January 2014 show. Ideally, we would like this small job to be shared around rather than being left to the same few people. If the Committee is forced to accommodate judges in motels, the income for the relevant show will be reduced by up to $250 per judge per show. If you are able to host our wonderful judges, please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you. The committee is looking for some wonderful people to contribute items for the judges lunches at our upcoming show. 8 people need to be fed. We require the following items: The agreed policy is to be published in the newsletter, on the website and in the next publication of pamphlet. Obedience The meeting discussed the possibility of having an annual trophy for Test C Open now that we have competing obedience champions. It was agreed that something is put in the newsletter to see if one of our members would like to donate a trophy. Saturday: 1 x main course, 1 x salad, 1 x potato/pasta/ rice dish, 1 x dessert Sunday: 1 x main course, 1 x salad, 1 x potato/pasta/rice dish, 1 x dessert We would also welcome any donations of food items for the canteen, e.g. muffins, sweet slices, sandwiches, etc. Please contact me if you have any queries or to offer your support. The meeting agreed that a thank you be put in the newsletter. Wish List The meeting confirmed that the number one priority now was fixing the hall lighting. Club members to be asked through the newsletter what things they would like to be added to the wish list. Members, end your wishlist & I’ll put in next newsletter.... STORAGE RACKS FOR AGILITY GEAR ..... like the simple but effective ones at OCTC This has been on the books for years but STILL we run the risk of impaling ourselves on weave poles when hauling contact gear out of untidy piles on the floor. We seem to be buying more & more gear while still having ineffective storage. Thats my wishlist for what its worth Dawn B Thoughts on the November Show (Agility) What we are trying to do is set a balance in our lives and run a well organised and positive show. I personally think that the show was, in the whole positive and showed our club in a good light. I also think that most people made a fair effort. Positives • Both days started on time.(Enough of our members were there at the start to set up, like 1 hour prior to walking the course) • Ring Managers worked well. • Time budget was spot on. • Most people stepped up and did their allotted job or they re-organised someone to do it so that there were no gaps in the jobs list. • There was a smooth transition from one event to the next. • Scrimers and Call Board Stewards did a good job and the show flowed. • There was less movement of dogs on the running order. • People changing the heights were pretty good. • Lunch break was good. • Judges were positive, helpful and complimented competitors. • Pull down at the end of both days was smooth especially on Sunday. (Because nobody left early) Negatives • Need a list of gear required. (Sorted) • More people could have helped setting up the courses during the day. • Need more jump stewards around the ring on all four sides. (4 people) • People felt they were spoken to in an abrupt manner to do their task. My comments would be, we are adults, it’s our responsibility to do the work at our show. We all need to do our fair share and if we had been doing our task we would not have needed to have been spoken to. People need to be more pro active in reading the jobs board or their email. Unless someone knows another way to share up the jobs and inform everyone what they are doing as jobs, then we are stuck with this system. • No pooh bin at our area and perhaps we need a supply of plastic bags out in our area. • Ran out of card for C.R.C. Solved. • It took too long on Saturday to get prize giving going, so next time I need to sort the ribbons on the Friday night. • The parking issue caused a few tense moments, we had thought to have competitors park where we usually had the training jumps and have the training jumps down beside the ring. • That issue had a solution but it could have been solved in a more polite way. • People telling me there was a problem with their entry instead of e mailing me as soon as the running order came out. (1 week before the show start date) If anyone has any positive or negative points to make please let me know and the hope is that we can improve our show and the running of it. We also have to remember that we are volunteers and we give up a lot of time to run each show. We depend on the club members to bring out the gear, and set up event after event and do their jobs and if they see a pole down, go to and pick it up. Club members need to have jobs allocated to them. There was an opportunity to volunteer for jobs and only one person contacted Rae. If a competitor is running in every event then they need to help set up the courses. It is unfair that some expect others to do more than their fair share of the work. This attitude needs to change. This brings me to the fact that we need a Show Manager for the January show. If you were unhappy with what went on in the November Show, well here is your chance to do it better. We also need a ring manager for each ring, and if anyone wants to volunteer for any of the other jobs, please contact me as soon as possible and I can pass this on to the Show Manager to organise. You could do one day or both as the Show Manager, or work in tandem with another person. We need a Show Manager, 2 ring Managers, a scrimer, call board steward, lead runner and 4 jump stewards for every course. Some jobs can be shared while others need the same person for the whole course. Elaine Youthed Show Secretary. Etiquette or how you should behave at the ring. • You should be available for the call steward when they call you into the line up. • You should have your toys or food etc in the bucket when the competitor in front of you begins their run. • As that person exits the ring you should line your dog up ready to start. • You should not continue playing with it, that holds up the judge and ultimately the show. • Let the lead runner know what you are doing, so talk briefly to them. • Give your number to the Scrimer and check with the judge that they are ready for you. • Having run your dog it does not hurt to thank the judge and/or lead runner and /or scrimer as you walk away from the ring, be sensible, positive and polite. They give up their free time to make sure you can run your dog. If you were one of these people, you would want to be thanked. Thank you.
