The Per ks of Mr s. Mer ck erk Mrs. Merc Staff Writer: Halie Wattenbarger A new teacher has been added to our school’s impressive roster of teachers. Mrs. Merck has her bachelor’s degree in business, which she recieved at Georgia State. Since obtaining her degree, she worked at several different occupations. She taught computer applications, business law, sports marketing, and graphic design at a high school in Florida. She has been at director level positions at Georgia State and Bryan College. She coached cross country at both high school and college level. She is a National Board certified teacher, and she is now taking over Meigs County’s FBLA club. connect with students once more. She says that teaching is her biggest joy in life, and she also says, “I’m really excited to be back in the classroom.” Mrs. Merck chose Meigs County not only because it was close to home, but also because she was impressed by the students and Mr. Baker. She enjoys being close to her students and helping them understand not just computer applications, but “real world shortcuts” as well. With her diverse business background, Meigs County has added another wonderful addition to its family, and Mrs. Merck’s students seem to agree. One student in her second period class had this to say about her: “Mrs. Merck is really nice, and she is really interesting. I love her.” Mrs. Merck’s heart is in the classroom, and even though she has had jobs other than teaching, she always comes back to teaching. Previously she had retired, but ultimately decided to come back into the classroom where she could Mrs. Merck just chillin’ Par for the Course Staff Writer:Megan Holmes With the season now in full swing, the Meigs County golf team continues on the right course. The girls have preserved their undefeated streak with recent victories over Midway, Greenback, Tellico, and Harriman. Team captain Kaitlyn Sneed was recognized as the Southeast Athlete of the Month for her impressive performance on the green. Newcomers on the team are also shining bright. Junior Tory Henry scored a personal best of 55, and first-year players Megan Lewis and Bailey Perkinson each recently earned their first bogeys. Meanwhile the boys team continues to improve one stroke at a time. Although they may have fallen to Greenback, Tellico, and Harriman, they came away with their first W of the season in a match-up against Midway. Friendly competition within the team has driven several individual successes. Matthew Meadows claimed bragging rights to the lowest score of the year from the boys until Tuesday night’s match, where underclassman Cameron Johnson tied Matt’s score of a 51. Samuel Anderson and Noah Howell follow close behind, each recently attaining personal bests of 52. Reports of pre-match bible studies, late night bus ride bonding, and abundant laughter lead one to believe that team chemistry is likely the golf team’s biggest strength. If you are interested in supporting this group of enthusiastic young athletes, be sure to purchase a ticket for your chance to win a year’s supply of Mayfields ice cream. On August 28, the Tigers faced a striking loss to Oneida after going into overtime with 7-7, but leaving with a score of 137. The players are upset at the loss, but haven’t lost their hope. “We saw the team we can be and the team we are gonna be,” Junior Jacob Baker said after the game. The Oneida coach said, “There’s no doubt that Meigs County is gonna win a lot of football games. Meigs has got a great football team and a great coaching staff. I’m very impressed.” After the August 28th Oneida game, students joined together for some fun and fellowship at the FCA’s annual Fifth Quarter. The event featured food, games, music, and a devotion led by Justin Jennings. Following a tough loss, Tiger fans’ spirits were low, but those who attended Fifth Quarter went home with a happy heart. On September 4th the Tigers faced off against number 1 ranked Marion County with an ending score of 49-15. Calendar Couples started originally as Calendar Girls in 2001 when English Cranfield made her appearance as the first Calendar Girl. The final Calendar Couple released was the 2010- 2011 school year calendar which featured Haley Gay and Dillon Tilley on the cover. According to teacher Brian Sayne, “The funniest thing I’ve ever experienced during a Calendar Couple assembely was watching Jeremy McNabb fall off the stage.” Anyone hoping to enter Calendar Couples must be passing all classes and have no serious behavior nor attendance issues. The fee to enter will be $20 per person. Photos for judging will be shot on Monday, September 28, beginning at 10:30 pm. There will be a $5 sitting fee to pay for casual wear photos. All contestants must wear prom attire for the contest. Practice for the contest will be held Thursday, October 8, at 3:30 p.m. in Hallway C by the gym.
